Opis:
Introduction. Parabens are preservatives that can be found in all types of cosmetics. Aim. Analysis and evaluation of sociodemographic and psychosocial factors related to the level of knowledge of young people about parabens in cosmetics. Material and methods. Three hundred students from randomly selected colleges in the Subcarpathian Province took part in the study. The author’s questionnaire was used, which consisted of a statement, a scale of attitudes, and a test of knowledge as well as the Multidimensional scale of Health Locus of Control. Results. A high level of knowledge about preservatives in cosmetics was possessed by 14 % of respondents. The respondents who read cosmetic ingredients showed a higher level of knowledge about parabens more often than others. Young people were most often characterized by type MHLC strong-internal, accounting for 34% of the sample, and this group had a higher level of knowledge about parabens more often than the other respondents. Conclusion. The respondents who thought that their health depends only on them had a high level of knowledge about parabens. Respondents with a low level of knowledge about cosmetic ingredients are the type that increases the influence of coincidence and the type that magnifies the influence of others.

Opis:
The global production of several thousands of Personal Care Products (PCPs) every year makes the release of PCPs to the environment an unavoidable by-product of a modernized lifestyle. Multiple studies have detected PCPs worldwide in various aquatic environments, including swimming pools. In the presented work, the concentrations of three selected compounds from the PCPs group were examined in 15 swimming pools with different functions. The aim of the study was to show the influence of various factors on the concentration levels of selected micropollutants. Two UV filters: BP-3 (oxybenzone), BP-8 (dioxybenzone) and one antioxidant BTH (dibutylhydroxytoluene) were selected for the research. The extraction of micropollutants from the swimming pool water matrix was carried out by Solid Phase Extraction (SPE). The extracts were analyzed using a gas chromatograph (GC) coupled to the mass detector (MS). BHT was the most common compound. Its concentration ranged from 3.8 ng/L to 5.5 ng/L. The most rarely occurring compound was BP-3. The concentration of this compound varied the most, from 18.5 ng/L to 1178.6 ng/L. BP-8 was present in 10 from 15 tested pools at the concentration level of 49.9–226.9 ng/L. The frequency of occurrence characterizing different micropollutants from PCPs group was higher in recreational pools than in sports pools. It was also observed that the applied water treatment technology may affect the presence of Personal Care Products in the swimming pool water. No impact of basic water quality parameters on the levels of tested pharmaceuticals has been shown in this research.

Opis:
Non-persistent endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous, man-made substances present in the environment that may interfere with the natural human hormones and may exert adverse consequences on human organism. Endocrinedisrupting chemicals have been suspected to be associated with altered reproductive function in the case of males and females. Environmental endocrine-disrupting non-persistent chemicals like parabens, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), synthetic pyrethroids and organophosphate pesticides are found in various products such as metal food cans, plastic bottles, detergents, personal care products or chemicals used for fighting against insects. The widespread distribution of these chemicals causes that humans are permanently exposed through multiple sources. The aim of this review is to summarize data linking non-persistent endocrine-disrupting chemicals exposure, and human, male reproductive hormones levels. The included studies were selected by searched PubMed, Web of Science and MEDLINE, original papers published from 2006 to 2016 and referring to human data were included to the review. The results of reviewed studies were not consistent, however, majority of the studies indicated that non-persistent EDCs may affect male reproductive hormones levels. Most findings suggest that exposure to environmental EDCs is negatively related to the level of testosterone (except for exposure to BPA which is positively associated). In most of the studies negative association was found between exposure to examined EDCs and free androgen index, too. Considering the suggested health effect of exposure to EDCs, more epidemiological data is needed. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(5):551–573

Opis:
Some of the recent publications have reported a decline in semen quality in the last few decades. This phenomenon is associated with environmental factors, particularly with exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The aim of this publication is to critically review the literature on exposure to the following 6 ubiquitous environmental non-persistent EDCs: bisphenol A, triclosan, parabens, synthetic pyrethroids, organophosphate pesticides and phthalates, and on their influence on semen quality measured as sperm concentration, sperm volume, total sperm count, motility, total motile count, morphology, sperm motion, sperm DNA damage (comet extent, tail length, tail distributed moment, percent of DNA located in the tail (tail%), DNA fragmentation index, high DNA stainability, X:Y ratio and aneuploidy. Several electronic databases were systematically searched until 31 August 2016. Studies were qualified for the review if they: linked environmental exposure to non-persistent EDCs to semen quality outcomes, were published in English after 2006 (and, in the case of phthalates, if they were published after 2009) and were conducted in the case of humans. Out of the 970 references, 45 articles were included in the review. This review adds to the body of evidence that exposure to non-persistent EDCs may affect semen quality parameters and decrease semen quality. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(4):377–414

Opis:
Many of organic compounds used as preservatives in cosmetics, drugs and foods have adverse impact on human and animal health. In recent years, special attention has been paid on substances which interferes with endocrine system of living organisms. The group of this substances is called endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and include wide range of chemicals eg phenolic compounds (parabens, phenylphenols, alkylphenols, bisphenol A etc.). EDCs can mimic or block the action of natural hormones causing changes mainly in the reproductive and immune systems, as well tumours formation. Similar to the natural hormones, EDCs are biologically active at very low concentration (pg/g - ng/g), it is the level comparable with their presence in wastewater effluents. Wastewater treatment plants using conventional treatment methods are not effective in removing most of EDCs, therefore, these compounds are present in the environment for example in marine and riverine sediments and surface water, which is often a drinking water reservoir.
Do związków tych, określanych mianem syntetycznych związków endokrynnych (endocrine disrupting compounds - EDCs), zalicza się m.in. szeroką gamę pochodnych fenolowych (np. parabeny, fenylofenole, alkilofenole, bisfenol A) i wiele innych.
