Suicide rates in Europe have in the recent years reached a disturbingly high level, sparking frequent discussions on the topic of mental health and suicide prevention, which significantly affect not only individuals but also their environment. The aim of this paper was to analyse the impact of the socio-economic situation on suicide rates using panel data analysis. The study presents an overview of the related literature and the definitions of essential terms concerning suicide, as well as the socio-economic factors determining suicide rates. The parameters of a fixed effects model were estimated, interpreted and compared with the results of earlier research. The analysis of the selected dataset showed that GDP per capita and the Gini coefficient have a negative and statistically insignificant impact on suicide rates. On the other hand, the conducted research showed that high divorce and unemployment rates, risk of poverty, social exclusion and excessive alcohol consumption proved to be statistically significant, thus increasing suicide rates.

A sample of 24 representative firms in the Czech economy is a subject of a study for their technical efficiency and, subsequently, for their willingness to invest. The former concept is accomplished with the help of the frontier production function. The latter one is based on the value of Tobin’s Q, defined as the ratio of the market value of business capital assets to their replacement value; if it is greater than one, Q indicates the profitability of further investment. The analysed firms differ in their technical performance, but all of them are profitable and this might be their motivation to invest. A comparison of technical efficiency and Tobin’s Q as two evaluations follows under a hypothesis that one of them matches the other one. Applying the Passing–Bablok method, the finding is that those two items are not interchangeable in spite of a high correlation.

This study is driven by a motivation to examine the key determinants of bank’s performance as proxied by bank’s liquidity (LR), non-performing loans (NPL), capital adequacy ratio (CAR), loan growth (FEXP) and default risk premium (FQL) within the framework of credit creation theory of banking. Using random effect model as an estimation tool on 93 banks in Middle East, Africa and Indian subcontinent over study period from 2009 through 2016, the findings reveal that there are significant relationships between bank’s performance and its loan growth. Both ROA and FEXP are also found to be positively correlated. In contrast, the NPL and CAR are found to be negatively correlated with ROA. As a whole, it is evident that loan growth plays a very important role in supporting bank’s long term performance.
Celem badania jest przeanalizowanie kluczowych czynników determinujących wyniki banku w zależności od jego płynności (LR), zagrożonych kredytów (NPL), współczynnika wypłacalności (CAR), wzrostu kredytów (FEXP) i premii za ryzyko niewypłacalności (FQL) w ramach teorii bankowej dotyczącej działalności kredytowej. Jako narzędzie oceny, w 93 bankach na Bliskim Wschodzie, w Afryce i na subkontynencie indyjskim, w okresie od 2009 r. do 2016 r. wykorzystano model efektu losowego. Wyniki pokazują, że istnieją istotne zależności między wydajnością banku a zwiększeniem aktywności kredytowej. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że zarówno ROA, jak i FEXP są skorelowane dodatnio, natomiast NPL i CAR są skorelowane ujemnie z ROA. Reasumując, należy stwierdzić, że zwiększenie aktywności kredytowej odgrywa bardzo ważną rolę we wspieraniu długoterminowej wydajności banku.

This study investigates the impact of macroeconomic instabilities on returns volatility spillover that is transmitted from the global to the Islamic equity market. The economic factors examined are the exchange rate, inflation rate, interest rate, and production growth. To achieve the purpose of the study, we utilize three analysis tools: a GARCH(p,q) model to derive values of volatility for all variables; an asymmetry dynamic conditional correlation (ADCC) model to produce a measure of volatility spillover as the dependent variable; and a panel data regression technique to assess the causality significance of macroeconomic factors to volatility spillover. This study is the first which expands such approaches. We observe monthly data of world and Islamic market indices, exchange rates, consumer price indices, interest rates, and industrial production indices. The data, which range from May 2002 to February 2019, are taken from the world market, and twenty-three economies, which consist of fourteen developed and nine emerging markets that have Islamic stock indices. In several sections, we provide important additional analysis for five stock markets in Central European economies, which are compared to the others. The finding suggests that the presence of volatility spillover on the Islamic markets that originates from the global market is affected by the internal instabilities of macroeconomic factors, except for industrial production instability for developed markets, including Central European markets. An implication of the study is that regulators should anticipate and prevent adverse consequences of volatility spillover by arranging their internal economic policy to control inflation rates, interest rates, and industrial production growth, as well as exchange rate flexibility. Moreover, market practitioners should include both global market volatility and macroeconomic instabilities in their prediction to create minimum risk.
Niniejsze badanie dotyczy wpływu niestabilności makroekonomicznej na przenoszenie zmienności stóp zwrotu z globalnego na islamski rynek akcji. Badane czynniki ekonomiczne to kurs walutowy, stopa inflacji, stopa procentowa i wzrost produkcji. Aby osiągnąć cel badania, wykorzystano trzy narzędzia analityczne: model GARCH (p, q) do wyliczania wartości zmienności dla wszystkich zmiennych, model ADCC w celu uzyskania miary wpływu zmienności jako zmiennej zależnej oraz technikę regresji danych panelowych do oceny znaczenia przyczynowości czynników makroekonomicznych w przenoszeniu zmienności. Niniejsze badanie jest pierwszym, które rozszerza takie podejście. Obserwowano miesięczne dane dotyczące światowych i islamskich indeksów rynkowych, kursów walutowych, wskaźników cen konsumpcyjnych, stóp procentowych i wskaźników produkcji przemysłowej. Dane z okresu od maja 2002 do lutego 2019 roku pochodzą z rynku światowego i dwudziestu trzech gospodarek – czternastu rozwiniętych i dziewięciu wschodzących rynków posiadających islamskie indeksy giełdowe. W kilku sekcjach przedstawiono ważne dodatkowe analizy dla pięciu rynków akcji w gospodarkach Europy Środkowej, które są porównywane z innymi rynkami. Wyniki badania sugerują, że na występowanie efektu przenoszenia zmienności wywodzącej się z rynku globalnego na rynki islamskie wpływa wewnętrzna niestabilność czynników makroekonomicznych, z wyjątkiem niestabilności produkcji przemysłowej na rynkach rozwiniętych, w tym na rynkach Europy Środkowej. Z badania wynika, że regulatorzy powinni przewidywać niekorzystne konsekwencje przenoszenia zmienności i zapobiegać im poprzez zorganizowanie wewnętrznej polityki gospodarczej w celu kontrolowania stóp inflacji, stóp procentowych i wzrostu produkcji przemysłowej, a także elastyczności kursu walutowego. Ponadto praktycy rynkowi powinni uwzględnić w swoich prognozach zmienność rynków globalnych i niestabilność makroekonomiczną, tak aby minimalizować ryzyko.

Objectives: Occupational accidents constitute a substantial health and economic burden for societies around the world and a variety of factors determine the frequency of accidents at work. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the economic situation and the rate of occupational accidents in Poland. Material and Methods: The analysis comprised data for 66 Polish sub-regions taken from the Central Statistical Office’s Local Data Bank. The regression analysis with panel data for period 2002–2014 was applied to identify the relationships involved. Four measures of accidents were used: the rates of total occupational accidents, accidents among men and women separately as well as days of incapacity to work due to accidents at work per employee. Four alternative measures assessed the economic situation: gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, average remuneration, the unemployment rate and number of dwelling permits. The confounding variables included were: employment in hazardous conditions and the size of enterprises. Results: The results of the regression estimates show that the number of occupational accidents in Poland exhibits procyclical behavior, which means that more accidents are observed during the times of economic expansion. Stronger relationships were observed in the equations explaining men’s accident rates as well as total rates. A weaker and not always statistically significant impact of economic situation was identified for women’s accident rates and days of incapacity to work. Conclusions: The results have important implications for occupational health and safety actions. In the periods of higher work intensity employers should focus on appropriate training and supervision of inexperienced workers as well as on ensuring enough time for already experienced employees to recuperate. In terms of public health actions, policy makers should focus on scrutinizing working conditions, educating employers and counteracting possible discrimination of injured employees. Głównym celem badania prezentowanego w artykule jest weryfikacja występowania efektu domina przy zawieraniu umów handlowych przez kraje Unii Europejskiej z krajami spoza Unii. Rozważania teoretyczne pozwalają na wyciągnięcie wniosków odnośnie motywów podpisywania nowych umów RTA. Według teorii domina (Baldwin 1995), rząd reportera, który będzie decydował się na podpisanie umowy RTA z krajem partnerskim, robi to ze względu na umowy handlowe wcześniej zawarte przez kraj partnerski z innymi krajami, a główną przyczyną jest efekt przesunięcia, który mógłby dotknąć reportera. W analizie wykorzystany jest model logitowy dla danych panelowych, zaś efekt przesunięcia mierzony jest liczbą umów podpisanych przez kraj partnerski, stopniem współpracy (typem zawartej umowy) oraz wielkością preferencyjnego handlu. Występowanie efektu domina znajduje potwierdzenie w opisywanych w literaturze badaniach w odniesieniu między innymi do rozszerzenia Unii Europejskiej, jednak otrzymane przez autorów wyniki nie potwierdzają występowania efektu domina przy decyzji o zawieraniu nowych umów RTA przez kraje UE.
The main objective of the study described in the article is to verify the domino effect when concluding regional trade agreements (RTAs) by the countries of the European Union with partners from outside EU. Conclusions, based on theoretical considerations, might be drawn about the motives of signing new RTAs. According to the domino theory (Baldwin 1995), the main reason for a reporter country to sign to a RTA is the trade diversion effect. It has been hypothesized that governments decide on signing a RTA with a partner country that had previously signed the trade agreements with other countries. In our empirical study we use a logit model for panel data, and the diversion effect is measured by the number of contracts signed by the partner country, the degree of cooperation (a type of agreement) and the volume of preferential trade. The existence of domino effect is confirmed by previous studies described in literature by other authors with respect to, among others, widening the European Union. However, the results obtained by us do not confirm the presence of the domino effect in the considered case of signing new RTAs with countries from outside EU.

The main objective of the research was to estimate the level of GDP and total factor productivity (TFP) in the counties ('poviats') of the Łódzkie voivodeship in the period 2002-2019. The gross product in poviats was determined by disaggregating the GDP of the Łódzkie voivodeship in proportion to the revenues of poviat budgets from personal income tax PIT and to the shares of poviats in the voivodeship wage fund. TFP was determined on the basis of a labour productivity model derived from the Cobb-Douglas production function with the assumption of constant returns to scale. A spatial panel data model estimated by the maximum likelihood method was applied. The poviat of Łódź was identified as the upper outlier in terms of the level of gross product. The dynamics of poviat values of GDP was similar to the national one, but poviats with a much faster rate of growth were identified. The highest level of TFP was observed in the poviat of Łódź. Very high productivity was also characteristic for the two other cities with poviat status, especially Skierniewice. In the Łódzkie voivodeship there was a progressive polarisation in terms of TFP with two leading poviats. No spillover processes were found. The capital city of the voivodeship, being itself the upper outlier, therefore did not play the role of a growth centre. It was also found that a clearly defined profile of economic activity in the poviat is conducive to faster TFP growth.
Zasadniczym celem badań było oszacowanie poziomu PKB i łącznej produktywności czynników produkcji (TFP) w powiatach województwa łódzkiego w latach 2002-2019. PKB oszacowano, dezagregując PKB województwa proporcjonalnie do dochodów podatkowych powiatów oraz do ich udziałów w wojewódzkim funduszu płac. TFP wyznaczono na podstawie modelu produktywności pracy wynikającego z funkcji produkcji Cobba-Douglasa z założeniem stałych efektów skali. Zastosowano panelowy model przestrzenny estymowany Metodą Największej Wiarygodności. Powiat miasto Łódź zidentyfikowano jako region o zdecydowanie najwyższym poziomie wytworzonej produkcji. Dynamika powiatowych wartości PKB była zbliżona do ogólnokrajowej, ale wskazano powiaty o znacznie szybszym tempie wzrostu. Najwyższym poziomem TFP charakteryzował się powiat m. Łódź. Bardzo wysoka produktywność charakteryzowała też dwa inne powiaty grodzkie, zwłaszcza Skierniewice. W badanym okresie rosła polaryzacja powiatów ze względu na poziom TFP oraz nie występowały zależności przestrzenne. Stolica województwa, będąca upper outlier, nie pełniła więc funkcji ośrodka wzrostu. Stwierdzono również szybszy wzrost TFP w powiatach o wyraźniej określonym profilu działalności gospodarczej.

Celem artykułu jest analiza kapitalizacji wybranych giełd z perspektywy odległości ekonomicznej między nimi. Ze względu na charakter giełd – brak ścisłego związku z geograficzną lokalizacją, zaproponowana zostanie macierz oparta na odpowiednio zdefiniowanej odległości ekonomicznej. Takie podejście umożliwi sprawdzenie jak silnie na kształtowanie się wielkości kapitalizacji na jednej giełdzie wpływa wartość tego procesu na innych giełdach, które są podobne pod względem ekonomicznym. Ponadto sprawdzone zostanie, czy między wybranymi giełdami zachodzi zjawisko σ-konwergencji wielkości kapitalizacji.
The aim of the article is the analysis of capitalization of selected stocks from a perspective of economical distance. According to character of stocks – lack of connection to their spatial position, in investigated model the matrix founded on economical distance will be proposed. Thanks to that approach, it will be possible to investigate how powerful impact on stock capitalization has value of this process observed in the other stocks. Moreover, it will be investigated if among selected stocks σ-convergence phenomena of capitalization is observed.

This article studies the impact of ASEA N on the bilateral exports of its 10 member countries. It reports the results of applying the gravity model to a data set covering 50 partner countries from 1967 to 2008. The study’s empirical findings show that on average ASEA N regionalism significantly increases bilateral exports. However, the results are country-specific and indicate that ASEA N seems to benefit only large economies with a long history of membership, while smaller more recent members do not show significant expansion of exports.

W licznych artykułach modelowanie na podstawie danych panelowych rozpoczyna się od przedstawienia macierzy współczynników korelacji liniowej Pearsona pomiędzy zmiennymi przyjętymi do badania. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest pokazanie nieprzydatności takiego podejścia w analizie zależności w przypadku danych panelowych oraz próba zaproponowania bardziej adekwatnej miary – współczynnika korelacji pomiędzy wartościami empirycznymi i teoretycznymi zmiennej objaśnianej oszacowanego modelu panelowego (z efektami stałymi lub losowymi) względem zmiennej, której zależność w stosunku do zmiennej objaśnianej jest obliczana. Współczynnik korelacji liniowej Pearsona nie uwidacznia podstawowej zalety danych panelowych, jaką jest dostarczanie informacji o zależnościach badanych zjawisk jednocześnie w czasie i przestrzeni. Dla obliczenia tego współczynnika nie jest bowiem istotne, że pewna obserwacja dotyczy obiektu i w okresie t, a inna – obiektu j w okresie t + 1. Można go natomiast wykorzystać w analizach danych panelowych do obliczeń cząstkowych. Prowadzone rozważania zilustrowano obliczeniami zależności pomiędzy strukturą kapitału oraz rentowością i wielkością 17 spółek budowlanych notowanych na Giełdzie Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie w latach 2009–2018 (170 obserwacji), tworzących panel zbilansowany. Obliczenia te pozwoliły na sformułowanie zalet i wad zaproponowanego rozwiązania.
Many articles featuring panel data modelling tend to begin their considerations with an introduction of the Pearson linear correlation coefficients matrix between the analysed variables. The aim of the article is to prove such an approach unsuitable in the analysis of panel data dependencies. Instead, an attempt has been made to propose a more appropriate measure – a correlation coefficient between the empirical and fitted values of the dependent variable of the estimated panel model (with fixed or random effects) in relation to the variable whose dependency towards the dependent variable is being studied. Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient does not reflect the basic advantage of panel data, which is the ability to provide information about the dependencies of the studied phenomena simultaneously in time and space. The fact that one observation relates to object i during period t and another to object j during period t + 1 is irrelevant for the calculation of the coefficient. Pearson’s coefficient, however, can be used when conducting sub-calculations in panel data analysis. The presented considerations have been illustrated by the calculations of the relationships between the structure of capital and the profitability and size of 17 construction companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in the years 2009–2018 (170 observations) which created a balanced panel. A specification of the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed solution was formulated on the basis of the calculations.

This study uses a real population from Statistics Lithuania to investigate the performance of different types of estimation strategies. The estimation strategy is a combination of sampling design and estimation design. The sampling designs include equal probability design (SRS) and unequal probability designs (stratified SRS and model-based sampling designs). Design-based direct Horvitz-Thompson, indirect model-assisted GREG estimator and indirect model-based estimator are used to estimate the totals in small area estimation. The underlying panel-type models (linear fixed-effects type or linear random-effects type) are examined in both stages of estimation strategies: sample design and construction of estimators.

One way to assess the quality of the educational activities of schools is to analyze the educational value-added, with the help of which it is possible to measure the gain in students‟ knowledge that takes place at various stages of education. This is an objective measurement that takes into account the knowledge with which the student begins the next stage of learning. Access to data on the final results of tests at every stage of education enables the assessment of the quality of education in schools throughout Poland. The article aims to analyze these results and attempts to show the spatial dependence of the results obtained.

W artykule przedstawiono próbę oszacowania łącznej produktywności czynników produkcji (TFP) według działów sekcji „przetwórstwo”, oraz określenia czynników determinujących jej kształtowanie. Do oszacowania wartości TFP zastosowano dwie alternatywne metody, bazujące na funkcji produkcji Cobba–Douglasa. Następnie skonstruowano i oszacowano dynamiczny model panelowy, opisujący kształtowanie się TFP w działach. Zmienną objaśnianą były wartości oszacowane w pierwszym etapie analizy. Do estymacji zastosowano metody bazujące na GMM.
The paper attempts to estimate total factor productivity (TFP) for sectors included in section „manufacturing”, and then to determine factors influencing it. Two alternative methods, based on the Cobb-Douglas production function were applied. The final step was construction and estimation of dynamic panel data model, describing TFP formation by sector. The explained variable was TFP, which values were estimated in the first step. GMM-based methods were used for estimation of the model.

Celem artykułu jest wyjaśnienie, jakie czynniki w wypadku państw Grupy Wyszehradzkiej stanowiły istotne motywy dokonywania bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych w krajach UE-27. Odnosząc się do eklektycznej teorii Dunninga i teorii rozwoju gospodarczego, postanowiono odpowiedzieć na pytanie jakie są determinanty wyboru kraju przyjmującego inwestycje. Postanowiono sprawdzić, czy rozszerzony model grawitacyjny handlu międzynarodowego pozwala poprzez operacjonalizację zmiennych zidentyfikować czynniki skłaniające do podejmowania BIZ. W celu zweryfikowania postawionych hipotez posłużono się podejściem Hausmana- Taylora przy estymacji modeli panelowych. Wyniki oszacowań sugerują, że model grawitacyjny jest adekwatnym narzędziem do wyjaśnienia odpływu BIZ z grupy krajów V4, niemniej jednak występują pewne anomalie w motywach inwestycyjnych na poziomie poszczególnych krajów W niektórych przypadkach, mimo procesów globalizacji, odległość geograficzna wydaje się być wciąż istotną barierą w dokonywaniu inwestycji. Decyzje dotyczące wyboru kraju lokaty są generalnie podyktowane wielkością rynku docelowego i wydajnością pracy. Empirycznie potwierdzono oczekiwania, że członkostwo w Unii Gospodarczej i Walutowej oraz Unii Europejskiej, różnice w opodatkowaniu, a także bliskość gospodarek w niektórych przypadkach ma istotny wpływ na wybór kraju inwestycji. Dane empiryczne pokazują, że motywy inwestycyjne pomiędzy krajami V4, a także wielkości i dynamiki BIZ uległy znacznym zmianom w okresie 2000-2012, szczególnie po wstąpieniu do Unii Europejskiej w 2004 roku.
The purpose of this article is to explain what factors, from the viewpoint of the Visegrad Group countries, were important determinants in outward FDI. Referring to the eclectic theory of Dunning and the theory of economic development, we decided to answer the question about the determinants for host country choice. We decided to check whether an augmentation of the classical gravity model of international trade allows one to identify push and pull FDI factors. The panel data approach using the Hausman-Taylor estimator was applied in the empirical analysis. The general results allowed us to verify the main hypothesis positively, but some anomalies were observed. In some cases, despite globalisation processes, distance seems to be still a barrier against investment. Decisions concerning the selection of the host country are usually determined by the size of the market measured by GDP per capita, labour productivity. It has been empirically proven that membership in the EMU and the EU, taxation differences and common borders in some cases has a significant influence on the FDI stock concentration. Investment motives among the V4, as well as the size and dynamics of outward FDI have undergone significant changes in the period between 2000–2012.

The study attempts to analyse India's trade potential with other SAARC member states under the SAFTA agreement by means of the augmented gravity model, at annual frequency from 1992 to 2019 in general and from 2004 to 2019 in particular. The findings of this paper prove that the intra-regional trade volumes between SAARC countries can be increased and encouraged. Moreover, the research shows that it is important to introduce structural reforms aiming to boost trade with non-member states. It would be advisable for researchers to take into account the effect locational and infrastructural advantages have on transport costs through the application of a gravity model. Previous research has also demonstrated that the augmented gravity model may prove helpful in explaining some key features of South Asian trade, which traditional gravity models fail to do.
