    Opis:
    There is a sizeable body of scholarship concerning the ekphrastic relation of literature to painting – however, there has been ascending interest in other sources of inspiration, such as photography. The aim of this paper is to explore whether the categories used to analyse ekphraseis of paintings might apply to the ekphraseis inspired by photography in Sara Baume’s A Line Made by Walking (2017), considering that they provide insightful information regarding the creative process of the protagonist and her inner state. The notion of ekphrasis (Clüver, Vieira, Webb) and theories of photography (Barthes, Machado, Sontag) will be used as theoretical support.

    Niniejszy tekst jest próbą wykorzystania fotografii jako świadectwa źródłowego, dotyczącego procesu twórczego Giorgia Morandiego (1890–1964), oraz posłużenia się nimi jako medium komparatystycznym, pozwalającym prześledzić modalności czasowe dzieła malarskiego. Seria zdjęć wykonanych przez Luigiego Ghirriego w 1989 r. ukazuje fenomenologiczne parametry pracowni, która była przestrzenią życiową artysty i jego praktyki malarskiej. W ujęciu fotografa pracownia ma cechy komory optycznej, służącej obserwacji zjawisk związanych z przedmiotami studium. Przedmiotem zasadniczej części artykułu jest analiza porównawcza Martwej natury z 1964 r. z nawiązującym do tej kompozycji zdjęciem obiektów. O ile fotografia ma cechy czasowości świadectwa, o tyle obraz malarski przez swoje zanurzenie w manualnej procedurze wykonawczej charakteryzuje się temporalnością akcentującą teraźniejszość wydarzenia percepcyjnego.
    This text attempts to use photographic images as source testimony concerning the creative process employed by Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) and to use them as a comparative medium to trace. A series of photographs taken by Luigi Ghirri in 1989 reveals the phenomenological parameters of a studio that was the artist’s living space and the locus of his painting practice. In the photographer’s view, the studio has the characteristics of an optical chamber for observing phenomena related to the objects of study. The main part of the essay focuses on a comparative analysis of the 1964 Still Life with a photograph of objects related to this work. While a photograph has the temporal characteristics of a testimony, a painted image, due to its immersion in the manual procedure of its execution, possesses a temporality that accentuates the present-time quality of the perceptual event.

    The aim of this paper is to consider the relationship between the work of S. I. Witkiewicz and mass culture. First, I analyse Witkacy’s photography and paintings. Then, I focus on the connections between his dramas and novels, and cinematography. The idea is to reveal the author’s ambiguous attitude towards mass culture. I refer to Witkacy’s philosophical and aesthetic writings. References to Polish mass culture of the interwar period are also included. The bibliographical basis of the study contains works of such authors as Janusz Degler, Katarzyna Taras and Daniel C. Gerould.

    Podróże w celach poznawczych, zarówno literackie, jak i artystyczne, znane są od starożytności. Stanowią zawsze cenne źródło w badaniach historycznych oraz społecznych. Oprócz walorów poznawczych są także ważnym źródłem ikonograficznym i dokumentalnym. Wraz z rozwojem naukowego krajoznawstwa oraz badań zabytkoznawczych od końca XVIII wieku podjęto szeroko zakrojone działania w celu dokumentowania zabytków. Ważną rolę w tym procesie odegrali malarze i graficy, a w późniejszym okresie fotografowie, którzy programowo uwieczniali zabytki oraz historyczne krajobrazy. Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest artystom, którzy wykonywali akwarele i rysunki utrwalające najciekawsze – jak wówczas określano – „zabytki starożytności”, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dzisiejszej Lubelszczyzny. Omówiono prace: Zygmunta Vogla, Jana Nepomucena Głowackiego, Antoniego Langego, Marcina Zaleskiego, Adama Lerue, Napoleona Ordy oraz fotografów – Karola Beyera i Jana Bułhaka. Zwrócono także uwagę na rolę rysowników-amatorów, m.in. Macieja Bogusza Stęczyńskiego. Przedstawione przykłady wskazują na ogromną wartość podejmowanych prac, a także na potrzebę ciągłego dokumentowania zabytków i krajobrazu kulturowego, który na naszych oczach ulega gwałtownym przeobrażeniom.
    Educational travel, both for literary and artistic purposes, has been known since antiquity. It is a valuable source in historical and social research. Apart from its informative value, it is also an important iconographic and documentary source. Along with the development of scientific sightseeing and historical research, extensive programs for documenting monuments were launched at the end of the 18th century. A significant role in this process was played by painters and graphic artists, and later by photographers, who systematically documented monuments and historical landscapes. This article is devoted to the artists who made watercolours and drawings documenting the most interesting – as they were then called – “monuments of antiquity”, with particular emphasis on today’s Lublin region. The author discusses the works of Zygmunt Vogel, Jan Nepomucen Głowacki, Antoni Lange, Marcin Zaleski, Adam Lerue, Napoleon Orda, and photographers Karol Beyer and Jan Bułhak. He also draws attention to the role of amateur draftsmen, such as Maciej Bogusz Stęczyński, in documenting monuments,. The examples presented in the article indicate the great value of the documentation work undertaken, as well as the need for continuous documentation of monuments and the cultural landscape, which is undergoing rapid transformation before our eyes.

    Opis:
    Reflecting on the issue of marginalization in art, it is difficult not to remember of the controversy which surrounds African-American Art. In the colonial period and during the formation of the American national identity this art was discarded along with the entire African cultural legacy and it has emerged as an important issue only at the dawn of the twentieth century, along with the European fashion for “Black Africa,” complemented by the fascination with jazz in the United States of America. The first time that African-American artists as a group became central to American visual art and literature was during what is now called the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. Another name for the Harlem Renaissance was the New Negro Movement, adopting the term “New Negro”, coined in 1925 by Alain Leroy Locke. These terms conveyed the belief that African-Americans could now cast off their heritage of servitude and define for themselves what it meant to be an African-American. The Harlem Renaissance saw a veritable explosion of creative activity from the African-Americans in many fields, including art, literature, and philosophy. The leading black artists in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940 were Archibald Motley, Palmer Hayden, Aaron Douglas, Hale Aspacio Woodruff, and James Van Der Zee.
    Odnosząc się do kwestii marginalizacji w sztuce trudno nie wspomnieć o kontrowersjach ota-czających sztukę Afroamerykanów. W okresie kolonialnym, a także podczas krystalizacji ame-rykańskiej tożsamości narodowej, sztuka ta została odrzucona wraz z całością afrykańskiego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Uznanie znaczenia tej kultury i sztuki pojawiło się jako istotna kwe-stia dopiero u zarania XX wieku wraz z europejską modą na Czarną Afrykę uzupełnioną o jazzowe fascynacje z USA. Ważnym etapem poprzedzającym powstanie sztuki „Nowych Czarnych” były próby poszukiwania wyrazu dla afroamerykańskiej tożsamości, świadomie ignorujące różnicę w pigmentacji skóry. Były to wyraźne dążenia do znalezienia wspólnego głosu z białym etosem i tradycją amerykańskiej klasy średniej. Po raz pierwszy afroamerykańscy artyści jak grupa stali się dominującym elementem ame-rykańskiej sztuki wizualnej i literatury jako ruch “Renesansu z Harlemu” (Harlem Renaissance) w latach 1920 i 1930. Inną nazwą tego nurtu było określenie “Nowi Murzyni” (New Negro) ukuty w 1925 roku przez Alain Leroy Locke’a. Twórczości Afroamerykanów w tym okresie przeżywa prawdziwą eksplozję talentów w wielu dziedzinach, w tym sztuki, literatury i filo-zofii. Czołowi czarni artyści z lat 1920–1940 to: Archibald Motley, Palmer Hayden, Aaron Douglas, Hale Aspacio Woodruff, James Van Der Zee.

    Opis:
    The article is based upon his translation of a French text published in 1994. The text was part of a catalogue featuring an individual exhibition by Zbigniew Dlubak in Maison des expositions de Genas. There were some minimal changes introduced by the author to the original work entitled “Du sens constitué à la constitution du sens.” The text highlighted the originality of the artist's inspirations: on the one hand — similarly to other conceptualists in 1960-1970 — Dłubak was interested in semiotics and linguistics. However he was more captivated by Jakobson and Mukarowsky than Ayer and Wittgenstein. On the other hand, in a similar way to some 20th century painters, he intuitively discovered the procedures of phenomenology. Dlubak's contribution to conceptual art is based on a 'structural-painterly' approach to art, which is reminiscent of Maurice Merleau-Ponty's philosophy. According to this French philosopher, language signs are 'forms in blanco'. For Dlubak, a work of art is an 'empty sign', which will acquire meaning during a process which Dlubak equaled with the work of art itself. The artist suggested an original—phenomenological—concept of aesthetic experience, which was based on the idea of stepping outside 'the world of meaning' in a search for the source where the sense of art is constituted. The discovery of the process in which the sense of art emerges and understanding its mechanisms, stand in opposition to aesthetic concepts, as these aesthetic concepts find the style as the main goal of art creation and assume that for an artist a specific style represents a specific way of thinking. Breaking away from the stylistic focus and from thinking in the categories of style, is one of the most significant elements of creation according to Dlubak; a style is an ossified and fossilised sense. One of his characteristic strategies, which is aimed at overcoming the category of style, is a parallel and concurrent use of painting and photography. He underlined the overlapping of artistic and cognitive processes and by doing so, Dlubak arrived at an original concept—not very new in the history of aesthetic thought—which sees art as ‘principle to the liveliness of one’s mind’.
