Opis:
Obesity, which occurs both in rich as well as developing countries, is a chronic disease that can cause many serious illnesses. It has become a global health problem, which affects onethird of adult population in the world. To induce weight loss, profound lifestyle modification is required. In the case, when lifestyle changes alone are insufficient, pharmacotherapy can be helpful. Most of anti-obesity drugs (e. g. fenfluramine, sibutramine, rimonabant), which have been approved for treatment of obesity, were subsequently withdrawn from the market due to their adverse effects. In this manuscript, a short overview of currently available anti-obesity drugs like orlistat, lorcaserin, liragutide as well as phentermine/topiramate and naltrexone/ bupropion combination, was presented. Herein we focus on efficiency, mechanism of action and possible side effects of anti-obesity drugs. Finally, it was emphasized that better understanding of mechanisms involved in appetite regulation could be useful for developing novel, more effective and better tolerated anti-obesity drugs.

The aim of the study was to establish psychological characteristics of overweight and obese women and to delineate the similarities and differences of this characteristics between women with overweight and obesity and women with normal weight. 80 women aged 48, with increased body mass index (43 with overweight – BMI = 25.1A˛30 and 37 with obesity – BMI > 30) and 80 women at similar age (average 46,8) with normal weight participated in the study. Various techniques were used: Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, Life Orientation Test, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, 3-factors Personality States and Traits Questionnaire, Kuhl Action Control Scale, Perceived Stress Scale and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). The results indicate that women with overweight and obesity reveal lower level of personal resources such as self-efficacy, self-esteem and level of optimism. Obese women elicited beliefs in powerful others in health locus of control. Obese subjects stronger perceive stress than women with normal weight. In coping with stress they use less task, and more avoidance strategies.

Introduction. The overweight and obesity epidemic represents a rapidly growing threat to the health of populations in an increasing number of countries. Nearly one-third of the world’s population has excess adipose tissue. Nowadays, obesity occurrence is so common that it is replacing more traditional problems, such as an undernutrition and infectious diseases, as the most significant causes of ill health. If the current trend continues, almost half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030. Objective. The aim of this study is to show the connection between recent trends in body mass index, and the globally changing cancer profile. State of knowledge. A range of clinical and epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between excess body fat and the most frequently occurring malignancies. Obesity is associated with many cancers, such as: breast, colorectal, liver, lung, kidney, oesophageal, pancreatic, endometrium, ovarian, prostate, thyroid, and gallbladder cancer. Conclusions. In the light of this information, the study supports the claimed statement that obesity is one of the major health problems of the 21st century. Considering the increase in the number of obese people worldwide, it is necessary to develop a strategy allowing to prevent it. Fighting against unhealthy lifestyle in order to reduce overweight and obesity in society may have an essential impact on decreasing the number of incidences of cancer.

Introduction. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in humans. It turns out that the problem is not limited to adults; excessive body weight is occurring in children more often. Aim. The main purpose of this work was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschool children from the Rzeszów district, and to determine risk factors for occurrence. Materials and survey method. The study was conducted among 200 preschool children (3 - 6 years of age) from the Rzeszów poviat area. Measurements of height, weight, and determination of BMI were performed and these values are standardized according to the WHO centile grids appropriate for each age group. Survey results. Normal weight was observed in 58% of the respondents, 11% were overweight, and 10.5% were obese, whereas 20.5% of children had undernourishment. Obese children were the largest group among 6-year-olds. Among 4 year old children, abnormal body weight were more frequent in boys. On the other hand, in children aged 5 years, undernourishment or overweight was found more frequently in girls. Conclusions. The study did not confirm a significant relationship between gender, place of residence and socio-economic situation of respondents, and the prevalence of overweight or obesity. The results of this study indicate that the problem of excessive body weight refers to the increasing number of children.

Background: The worldwide trends in childhood obesity and associated health-related risks are a cause of concern. In view of this alarming tendency continuous monitoring and information on a wide age-range of children is important. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to observe national trends of childhood overweight (ow) and obesity (ob) among 5-14-year-olds in Liechtenstein over a 9-year period. Methods: The study is based on a series of 5 cross-sectional screening examinations conducted at two-year intervals from 2004 to 2012 and includes data of 3,711 children. Boys and girls are equally represented (50.1 % and 49.9 %). BMI was calculated on standardised measurements and classified by using the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) cut-offs. Results: Using IOTF reference, currently 16.6 % of pre-schoolers and school children in Liechtenstein are overweight (incl. obesity), i.e. approximately every 6th child is affected. Over the studied 9-year period, a non-significant decrease in the combined prevalence (owob) was observed in both boys and girls. Gender specific analysis showed that differences between boys and girls were rather weakly expressed, but seemed to increase during school age with a tendency of more overweight boys in secondary school. Conclusions: This study suggests an apparent levelling off in childhood overweight and obesity in Liechtenstein between 2004 and 2012 and corroborates similar findings from other countries.

The quality of life is a multidimensional notion. When studying it, one should take the physical, the psychological, the social, and the professional aspects into consid eration. Among them, the notion of the influence of obesity, understood as a modern -age disease, relates the quality of life to the notion of health, in the aspect of physical activity. The aim of the study carried out, was to determine the relationship be tween obesity in 18 -25 year - olds, and their physical activity, as well as the quality of their lives. The study was carried out by means a WHOQOL - BREF, and IPAQ survey questionnaires carried out on a group of 100 participants. The control group included pe ople whose BMI was within the norm, whereas the study group comprised people whose BMI was over 25. The results of the study have shown obesity to have a statistically significant negative impact on the quality of life in the physical, and mental domains, and as far as the general perception of health was concerned. In the study group, the mean weekly energy expenditure, was lower than in the control group. The physical activity of the obese, includes, mainly, activities based on light effort, and to a less er extent, those based on moderate effort. A comparative analysis has shown the level of physical activity to be significantly lower in obese women, in each type of physical effort, except light effort. This difference does not exist between the study, and control groups of men.

Opis:
The rising prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and teenagers is a major challenge for public health. Obesity is a complex and heterogeneous disorder, affected by many interacting genetic and non-genetic factors. The aim of this article was to focus on the environmental risk factors for childhood obesity. Among different factors contributing to an increase in BMI, we highlighted the role of exposure to cigarette smoke, DDT, bisphenol A, pesticides, and noise. The correlation between exposure to environmental toxins during prenatal period and obesity development in later life was underlined. According to obesogenic environment hypothesis, some features of distal and proximal neighbourhood also have a pivotal impact on children's behaviour and may contribute to increasing the risk for overweight. The area of residence (urban or rural) may affect access to sports facilities or other opportunities for physical activity. Therefore, for designing adequate prophylaxis, it is essential to take into account modifiable risk factors present in residential neighbourhood. Prevention of childhood obesity should integrate activities for both micro- and macro-environment surrounding the child.
Wzrastająca częstość występowania nadwagi lub otyłości u dzieci i nastolatków stanowi poważne wyzwanie dla zdrowia publicznego. Otyłość to złożone i heterogenne zaburzenie wynikające z wielu interakcji pomiędzy czynnikami genetycznymi i pozagenetycznymi.

Overweight and obesity constitute a serious social problem. They are considered hazards of developed countries. Overweight and obesity affect both adults and children. Numerous researches on the negative impact of obesity on the condition of oral cavity have been conducted. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the most recent data published and noted in PubMed database between 2007 and 2014, on the association between overweight and obesity and oral diseases, including caries and periodontal diseases, as well as to discuss their mechanisms. The majority of studies discussed in this paper demonstrate the existence of an association between obesity and the health of the oral cavity. An association between overweight and obesity expressed as various anthropometric indices, and oral cavity conditions should be the subject of further prospective studies.

Introduction. An important way of preventing type 2diabetes is by adopting a proper diet by which means appropriate control over blood glycaemia and lipids can be achieved. Objectives. To assess selected biochemical and haematological markers in overweight subjects or those suffering from type 2 diabetes in relation to their estimated dietary intake. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2012 on n=86 overweight or obese subjects living in Warsaw or its environs, of whom n=43 had type 2 diabetes. Dietary intakes were compared between non-diabetics (control group) and diabetics (test group) by 3 day records, whilst the relevant blood biochemistry and haematology results were obtained from medical records; with patient consent. Results. Diabetic subjects had significantly higher serum glucose and CRP levels than controls, respectively; 190 vs 98 mg/ dl and 1.4 vs 1.1 mg/dl. Lipid profiles were however more significantly abnormal in controls, compared to diabetics with respectively; total cholesterol 220 vs 194 mg/dl, LDL-cholesterol 131 vs 107 mg/dl and triglycerides 206 vs 157 mg/dl. There were no significant differences in HDL-cholesterol; respectively 55 vs 51 mg/dl. In the diabetics, calorific intakes from carbohydrates, especially sugars, were significantly lower than controls i.e. 9% vs 13%. The proportional share of calories derived from dietary fats did not differ between groups, nevertheless a positive correlation was observed between dietary fat content with blood cholesterol concentrations in diabetics. Conclusions. Disorders of carbohydrate metabolism were confirmed in both overweight and diabetic (type 2) subjects. In addition, both groups demonstrated untoward lipid profiles that correlated with their improper nutrition.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badanie przeprowadzono w 2012 roku, wśród 86 mieszkańców Warszawy i okolic, z nadwaga i otyłością, w tym u 43 osób z cukrzycą. Do oceny sposobu żywienia wykorzystano metodę trzydniowego bieżącego notowania. Wnioski. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają występowanie zaburzeń gospodarki węglowodanowej u pacjentów z nadmierną masą ciała oraz cukrzycą typu 2. Ponadto w badanych grupach zaobserwowano niekorzystny profil lipidowy korelujący z ich nieprawidłowym sposobem żywienia.

Introduction and objective. There is an evidence suggesting that obesity may influence the timing of puberty and growth patterns. There are few research on the reactions of the craniofacial complex to an overall increase in the body mass. Thus the objective of the study was to investigate if overweight or obesity may influence craniofacial morphology in adolescent orthodontic patients. Material and methods. In total, 77 patients aged 11–16 years were selected for the retrospective analysis. The study group comprised 37 overweight or obese individuals (mean age: 13,45±2,15). The control group included 40 normal-weight subjects (mean age: 13.79±1.81). Body mass index (BMI) percentile of each patient was assessed with the use of BMI score and age- and sex specific growth charts in accordance with International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). Craniofacial measurements included in the study were performed on the tracings of lateral cephalometric radiographs. The data was analyzed by STATISTICA 10 for Windows Software. Results. Both females and males of the study group exhibited significantly greater mandible length (Cd-Gn), corpus length (Go-Pg), midfacial length (Cd-A) and lower anterior facial height (Ans-Me) (p<0.05), as well as SNB, SNPg and ML/SN angles (p<0.05) compared to the normal-weight controls. Moreover, high BMI females showed greater maxillary length (Pm-A) and SNA angle (p<0.05), whereas males exhibited greater posterior facial height (S-Go) (p<0.05) compared to the controls. Conclusions. Weight status is an important factor that can affect craniofacial growth pattern and should be taken into consideration when planning orthopaedic treatment in adolescent patients.

Wstęp i cel: Nowotwory złośliwe stanowią drugą przyczynę zgonów w Polsce, a pierwszą przed 65 rokiem życia. Stwierdzono zbyt małe spożycie warzyw i owoców.
Introduction and aim: Malignant tumors are the second cause of death in Poland and the first before 65 years of age. Improper diet is one of the factors involved in the development of malignancies The aim is to explain the impact of nutrition on the type of cancer. Material and method: The main objective of this study was to determine whether diet and various food products have an impact on the type of cancer among respondents. The study was conducted in the period from August 2014 to January 2015 Subcarpatin Oncology Center in Rzeszow. The study involved 100 people diagnosed with cancer. The method used in the operation was author questionnaire containing 34 questions. Results: In the study was not detected statistically significant differences between the consumption of various products and the type of cancer. Opis:
Monitoring data analysis forms a central basis for the assessment of the prevalence and development of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, thus identifying a potential need for action and adopting preventive measures. Based on data of 5‘515 children and adolescents aged between 4 and 14, this article presents a current trend analysis for Liechtenstein for in the period between 2004 and 2018. This study is based on cross-sectional data from health screening examinations supervised by the national Office of Public Health. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from anthropometric measurements and classified with reference to the age and gender-specific cut-off criteria of the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). Across the examined age groups, 15.6% of all children and adolescents in Liechtenstein are currently considered to be overweight or obese. This is a similiar prevalence as in neighbouring regions and shows a stable development over the 15-year monitoring period.

Opis:
Self-report questionnaire My Eating Habits was developed to assess influence eating habits and psychological factors in pathogenesis of overweight and obesity. It consist of 30 items, which include statements regarding weight, dieting, behaviours, attitudes associated with eating. My Eating Habits questionnaire was validated on a normal and overweight sample. Reliability of the questionnaire was assessed by internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and it was high – 0.89. Factor analysis yielded three factors, which explained 37.5% of the total variance: factor 1 – habit overeating, factor 2 – emotional overeating, 3 – restraint from eating. My Eating Habits questionnaire can distinguish reliably between subjects with overweight and normal weight. It may also identify subjects in the general population who are at risk for developing eating disorders, in particular overeating. The results of the study indicate that My Eating Habits questionnaire is a reliable and valid method, but it should be invaluable in long-term studies and in different groups, among them in subjects with anorexia nervosa and bulimia.
