Opis:
In this paper, we combine two alternative procedures for decomposing the Gini index: the Silber matrix approach and the Dagum technique based on Gini mean difference. This combined decomposition can be used for overlapping as well as no overlapping population subgroups. The presented decomposition procedure derives the within-group, the between-group, and the overlapping inequalities by exploiting all of the information on income distribution contained in one matrix accounting for pair wise disparities between per capita income shares. Moreover, this matrix approach can serve the scope of counting the frequency of overlapping, providing new insights for a more complete analysis of overlapping. The suggested methodology is applied to survey data on Italian employee incomes in 2000 and 2008.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of numerical simulations based on the URANS approach and the chimera overlapping grids technique of the main PZL W-3A "Sokół" (Falcon) helicopter rotor in forward flight conditions. The low-speed flight case models the helicopter rotor as parallel to the ground keeping forward speed of approximately 99km/h. Strong Blade-Vortex Interaction (BVI) is responsible for a high level of vibration and noise. The high-speed (266km/h) case reveals two main problems of modern helicopters: compressibility effects due to strong shock-wave boundary layer interaction on the advancing side and separation leading to a dynamic stall on the retreating side of the rotor. An attempt is made to correlate the results of the simulations with the very limited flight test data.

The paper concerns the problem of estimating population parameters for repeated rotating surveys. Coefficients required for theoretical BLUE estimator for rotating surveys are for actual real surveys usually not known. There are no theoretical papers relating to this problem. It is therefore necessary to conduct suitable simulation studies. Broad simulation analyses conducted in the paper are carried out on the basis of two populations: generated from a multivariate normal distribution and based on real data derived from agricultural censuses.

Opis:
Research background: The paper investigates the impact of bequest taxation on saving and transfers when parents and children make decisions consistently. It complements the predictions of Gale and Perozek's life-cycle modeling (2001) when decisions of parents and children are set independently and can be time-inconsistent. Purpose of the article: The paper strives to answer the question of whether taxation of bequest harms savings and inter vivos transfers. The previous results indicated that this is possible for some bequest motives. Our results show that this is not likely for the most typical values of parameters. Methods: The analysis involves economic modeling of four bequest motives: altruistic, paternalistic, accidental, and exchange. The method is based on the overlapping generation approach and life-cycle approach in the case of a paternalistic bequest. The results are supplemented with numerical simulations. Findings & value added: For the altruistic motive, savings are smaller if interest rates are low relative to the tax rate and the utility of one's consumption is more valuable than the utility of the next generations. For the accidental motive, savings decrease with small interest rates, high taxation and long-life expectancy. For the paternalistic motive, savings decrease when the interest rate and the value of future utility are low. For the exchange motive, savings are higher after a tax increase, but it depends on the value of attention and life expectancy. The general conclusion is that higher bequest taxation hamper saving behavior and may disturb the intergenerational exchange process. The bequest tax should, therefore, be set low, especially for aging populations, in order to induce higher savings and force the young to provide the elderly with higher attention.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) operate in an overcrowded electromagnetic environment, as the spectrum is shared by various wireless communication technologies. This gives rise to various challenges related to optimized and efficient spectrum utilization. Cognitive radio (CR) has emerged as a solution satisfying this requirement, as it is capable of adapting to the dynamic radio spectrum. Thanks to the deployment of cognitive radio in WSNs, the spectrum may be utilized in a more efficient manner. CR may identify the vacant channels dynamically, allowing the sensor nodes to effeectively communicate with each other. In this paper a clustering algorithm known as improved cluster-based channel assignment (ICBCA) is implemented, forming clusters of CR sensor nodes and then selecting vacant channels for data transmission purposes. Simulation results show that ICBCA outperforms existing clustering algorithms in CR sensor networks.

The paper aims to show the way in which pension systems affect fertility rates. The author outlines the history of pension systems and traces changes in fertility. The article includes a brief overview of demographic theories and tells the reader why these approaches are inadequate in explaining fertility trends. In his analysis, Zwierzchowski makes use of the overlapping generations model (OLG) to show why and under what circumstances pensions may discourage people from having children. After further theoretical research, the author concludes that the negative influence of pension systems on fertility could be neutralized by the introduction of a public assistance program targeted at parents. The costs of such a program could be covered by those who do not have children, Zwierzchowski says. While today’s welfare state systems cover some of the costs of bringing up children, it is unclear to what extent this assistance neutralizes the negative impact of pension systems on fertility, Zwierzchowski notes.

Most tendency surveys are organized to be based on a fixed sample of units across time. This fixed panel constitutes a designed sample. But in practice the resulting sample always differs from the designed one, sometimes quite considerably. In tendency surveys, like in all real surveys, some sampled units refuse to participate, some agree to cooperate but forgo several periods later, some respond irregularly. Consequently, the resulting samples across time never constitute a perfect panel, they form an overlapping sample pattern. In the paper we propose a formula for adjusted balance statistics that takes into account distortion of a sample. The main idea of adjusted balance statistics is analogous to estimators known from statistical overlapping samples theory. Theoretical part of the paper is extended by empirical analysis of monthly business tendency survey data. In particular, the response pattern is studied and comparison of original and adjusted balance statistics is conducted.

Opis:
To reveal the key optimization considerations for the application of elliptic cross-section matrices in axial high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS), the performance of circular and elliptic matrices was investigated experimentally and theoretically, providing that the short axis of elliptic matrix was equal to the diameter of circular matrix. Three schemes were adopted to investigate the performance matrices with ratio of long axis to short axis λ of 1 (circular matrix), 1.6 and 2. Under the same matrix unit number, hematite recovery of elliptic matrices could be 5~20% higher than that of circular matrices. For the case that the separation space was fully filled under the same matrix unit spacing, elliptic matrices showed higher and lower hematite recovery in low and relatively high magnetic field. The particle capture cross section area of elliptic matrix could be 1.4~1.8 times larger than that of circular matrix. Analyses with particle capture models showed that higher hematite recovery was ascribed to the larger particle capture cross section of the elliptic matrices and overlapping of the capture cross section was responsible for the lower hematite recovery of elliptic matrices in relatively high magnetic field. For substitution of circular matrices with elliptic matrices in axial HGMS, overlapping of capture cross section of target particles should be taken into consideration.

A Finite Volume (FV) algorithm is presented to investigate two-dimensional hydrodynamic problems including viscous free surface flow interaction with free rigid bodies in the case of large and/or relative motions. Two-phase flow with complex deformations at the interface is simulated using a fractional stepvolume of fluid algorithm while it is also capable of representing a high quality wave tank, according to implemented temporal discretisation. Rigid body motions are also captured using two overset meshes. Flow variables are transferred using a simple fully implicit non-conservative interpolation scheme which maintains the second-order accuracy of implemented spatial discretisation. A code is developed and an appropriate set of problems are investigated. Results show a good potential to develop a virtual hydrodynamics laboratory.

The paper aims to present the types of semantic relations which hold between the interlingual homonyms existing in the semantic field of “people’s spiritual life”. The primary type of the relations among the studied lexical units is exclusion (the presence of a religious component in the semantics of a word of one of the studied languages and the lack of such a component in the other language). Because of the significant number of the examples of this type of relation, the words were divided into three thematic groups: 1) concepts (пассия – pasja), 2) objects (арка – arka), 3) people (лектор – lektor). The relation type of inclusion (with the shared religious semantics, one of the homonyms has an additional meaning related to this area) was observed in a few pairs (катафалк – katafalk). The relation type of overlapping (with the shared religious semantics, each of the homonyms has an additional meaning) in a given lexical field was not identified. No relation of overlapping in a given lexical field and only a few cases of the inclusion relation can prove that the resources of Russian and Polish homonymous words belonging to the religious theme of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches contrast with one another in quite an unobvious way. It is conditioned by both linguistic as well as cultural factors.

The article presents the rules of overlapping of titles in pension and disability insurances in Poland. The Act on the social insurance system unified the rules for being subject to social insurance. The system was based on two pillars, providing the insured with at least a minimum level of benefits and flexible rules for being subject to social insurances. Numerous amendments to the regulations introduced after 1999 made this system complex and susceptible to optimisation. The author suggests that the rules of being subject to pension and disability insurance should be simplified. He proposes to divide the insured into four categories: employed, self-employed, insured persons whose contributions are financed from the state budget and persons subject to voluntary pension and disability social insurances.

The author situates the work and biography of Lola Arias the director, filmmaker and visual artist within the „archeontology in action”. Also, he describes Arias’ strategy of overlapping reality and fiction to project the new vision of the future. Her performances are juxtaposed with Donna Haraway’s notion of „speculative fabulation” according to whichsmall, individual stories help us to understand complex reality and new modes of perception.

Opis:
A new iterative non-overlapping domain decomposition method is proposed for solving the one- and two-dimensional Helmholtz equation on parallel computers. The spectral collocation method is applied to solve the Helmholtz equation in each subdomain based on the Chebyshev approximation, while the patching conditions are imposed at the interfaces between subdomains through a correction, being a linear function of the space coordinates. Convergence analysis is performed for two applications of the proposed method (DDLC and DDNNLC algorithms - the meaning of these abbreviations is explained below) based on the works of Zanolli and Funaro et al. Numerical tests have been performed and results obtained using the proposed method and other iterative algorithms have been compared. Parallel performance of the multi-domain algorithms has been analyzed by decomposing the two-dimensional domain into a number of subdomains in one spatial direction. For the one-dimensional problem, convergence of the iteration process was quickly obtained using the proposed method, setting a small value of the ? constant in the Helmholtz equation. Another application of the proposed method may be an alternative to other iterative schemes when solving the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation.

Opis:
In the paper, we analyse a role of dependent preferences in the form of external consumption habits in shaping wealth inequality. This idea assumes that consumers assess utility of their consumption relative to consumption in some reference group. We use a realistic overlapping generations model with parameters calibrated on Polish data. The results of the simulation experiments show that in most cases introducing habits decreases inequality slightly or moderately. However, if the mean consumption in the whole population is taken as the reference point and the habit strength is high a substantial increase in wealth concentration is observed. It is also shown that the reference group cannot comprise consumers in the same age alone as it generates unrealistic ageconsumption profiles.
