    Two studies investigated the process of emotion regulation in powerless groups. We predicted that members of powerless groups would reduce negative emotions when they perceived status differences as illegitimate and ascribed stereotypes to the outgroup. In Study 1 the opportunity to attribute outgroup stereotypes after reading about an illegitimate power distribution reduced negative emotions. By contrast, in socially legitimized powerless conditions participants maintained negative emotions over time, and supported more negative action tendencies towards the outgroup after expressing outgroup stereotypes. In Study 2 we increased the threat imposed by a powerful outgroup and found fear reduction in the illegitimate and maintenance of fear in the legitimate conditions. Additionally, the effect of legitimacy on group efficacy was mediated by threat appraisals. The impact of perceived legitimacy of asymmetric power relations and the salience of outgroup stereotypes on emotional and behavioral reactions to powerlessness is discussed.

    In the domain of interpersonal relations empathy has been widely regarded as a valuable tool for peacebuilding. Past research has shown that if enough empathy is extended to a victim of violence, insight into the victim’s plight tends to give pause to the aggressor and also prompt bystanders to help. While the victim is the sole recipient of empathy in an interpersonal conflict, elevating the concept of empathy from an individual level analysis to a group level analysis encounters further complications. In intergroup conflicts, both parties in the conflict stand to receive empathy. In light of this, one theoretical question is whether both kinds of empathy, those directed to the ingroup members and the outgroup members, have similar utilities in peacebuilding. We reference the literature on intergroup contact and intergroup threats, to scrutinize the role of empathy in intergroup conflicts. We argue that ingroup and outgroup empathy have the opposite effects on group violence – directing empathy to the outgroup results in the denouncement of aggression, whereas directing empathy to the ingroup may lead to a desire to counterattack. Thus, rather than boosting the overall amplitude of empathy, striking the right balance is the key of leveraging empathy towards peace.

    When do ideals influence functioning? The author assumes that the high complexity of the ideal self favors social attitudes consistent with axiological standards. Two correlative studies are presented: Study 1, with the participation of students from the University of Warsaw (N = 118), and Study 2, with the participation of young Internet users (N = 326). The hypothesis predicted that the number of ideal self attributes would correlate with egalitarian and pro-life attitudes. In both studies, participants were supposed to generate traits of the ideal self-reflecting its complexity (ISC). In Study 1, the asymmetry effect in the ratings of physical dictance between Self and Outgroup members was measured. In Study 2, a questionnaire was applied to measure attitudes towards egalitarian and pro-life rules. The results of both studies show that groups with lower ISC levels displayed a more stereotypical perception of distance between Self and Outgroup members as well as less egalitarian and less pro-life attitudes compared to groups with higher ISC levels.

    Granfalloon is a sociopsychological technique of organizating people in a strongly emotionally identified ingroup. A set of various kinds of emblems is the only way successfully defining granfalloon. In means that no idea, no rational motivation nor rational argument is connected with this social phenomenon. That is why granfallooon is strictly related to the minimal group paradigm. The lack of worth results in the seemingly inexplicable power and unusual vitality of the granfallooon. Unfortunately, it makes granfalloon an extremely dangerous phenomenon, especially for members of granfalloon’s outgroup. Those people are defined as enemies of the granfalloon. The Third Rich is an example of the particularly pathological granfalloon with precisely defined outgroup of Another, a society of Jews condemned to extermination. The Ron Jones’s Third Wave Experience has proved that this technique, also in its really dangerous form, can come into being even in an exclusive school of pupils coming from respectable families living in an old democracy. Undoubtedly, educationalists, teachers and class tutors should possess knowledge about granfalloon as well as the Third Wave Experience.

    Many outstanding psychologists like Philip Zimbardo and Simon Baron-Cohen ask the fundamental question: How Can Good People Turn Evil? An answer to this question should also be interesting and important for lawyers. In fact, sometimesthere are situations when the so called, ‘good people’ become capable of committing real crimes. Some of these situations are not accidental, but they are created by somebody who knows well methods how to manipulate others. Then, we usually have a case ofguilt without conviction.

    The presented study explores the possibility of creating and implementing educational program which would reduce intergroup bias in realistic high school setting. The project was based on the assumption that there is the need of easily applicable, anti-prejudice intervention, which would be appropriate to introduce into foreign language course books, would be universal in terms of changing negative attitudes and would meet all methodological requirements of language lessons. Crossed categorization and the common ingroup identity model were used as theoretical basis for 30 English lesson scenarios on B2 level (upper-intermediate). It was shown that after the intervention there was a signifi cant change in the students’ attitude toward the outgroup and the outgroup members. The implications of these fi ndings are discussed.
