Opis:
This paper reports the findings of two studies conducted to investigate the effects on pH, Eh and sulfate content of sulfuric soil material of acid sulfate soil following the addition of organic carbon and nitrogen. The first study compared the responses to simple carbon sources (glucose, sodium acetate and molasses) with complex organic matter in the form of chopped Phragmites. The second experiment considered the effect of nitrogen by testing organic matter with varying nitrogen content. The results of the first study showed that the changes in Eh and sulfate contents induced by these treatments mirrored the changes in pH, the highest change being only 5.6 units induced by sodium acetate. These results showed that organic carbon alone was ineffective in treating sulfuric soil material acidity, and that nitrogen was needed. Lucerne hay which had the highest nitrogen content produced the largest increase in pH by 4.2 units, and the changes of pea straw and wheat straw was 3.2 units. It was proposed that the alkalinising effect of the treatments was mediated by anaerobic microbial metabolism which required sources of nitrogen as well as organic carbon. The changes in soil redox conditions by -150 mV measured indicated that sulfur-reducing bacteria induced the changes in Eh, which caused pH to increase and sulfate content to decrease in comparison with nitrate-reducing bacteria. The findings of these studies have implications for management of sulfuric soil material acidity.

In Poland, its origin, organic farming is the pre-war period. The beginning of the development of organic farming in Western Europe is the end of the 80s of the twentieth century. It was necessary to implement the relevant legal norms, practices and agricultural subsidies. The provisions relating to changes in agricultural management practices were adopted due to the limitations of excess production and to protect the environment.

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to conduct empirical research which contributes to determining the interest in enjoying organic payments made to farmers under the “Rural Areas Development Program” in the area of the Framework Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming in Poland. Research method – The method of a literature review and analysis coupled with statistical analysis based on the calculation of structure, dynamics and correlation indicators were used in the work. The dynamics of organic payments received by farmers during the period 2014-2018 was assessed. A comparison was also made of the value of organic farming payments with budget expenditure on agriculture in Poland. Results – The obtained correlation coefficients were utilised to assess the relationship between the expenditure under the program and the expenditure of the state budget on agriculture. The correlation coefficient calculated for the number of beneficiaries and the value of ecological payments is 0.17201. The correlation coefficient for the value of organic payments and the value of budget expenditure on agriculture and hunting is -0.3406167. Originality /value/ implications /recommendations – An attempt was made to evaluate the role of organic payments in Poland as a form of motivating farmers to undertake organic production. Since 2014, the number of organic processing plants has increased by 88%. The decrease in the number of producers and increase in the number of processing plants may indicate a change in the structure of the supply chain in the area of organic food.

Opis:
This paper reviews the classifications of organic soils as applied in different countries, with particular attention drawn to those based on international and European norms. These norms propose the distinction of four groups of organic soils: peats (fibrous, pseudo-fibrous, and amorphous), gyttja and humic soils, which may be further divided into sub-groups. Organic soils are included within poor soils, because of their considerable susceptibility in relation to water, which causes their high compressibility, low strength and high shrinkage. Existing regional and international norms and plans appear not to characterise these soils sufficiently. The classification proposed in this paper will allow determination of the relationships between particular engineering geological parameters, which, to a large degree, will help planning of such objects as embankments or melioration structures. This is, however, possible only within particular genetic types. Organic soils developed in different conditions differ not only in organic matter content, but also in their chemical and physico-chemical character (i.e. degree of carbonisation, relation of humic acids to fulvic acids, bitumen content, degree of coagulation and decomposition of organicmatter). The evaluation of organic soils requires firstly the determination of their origin, and then each genetic group should be subdivided based on the content of organic matter. The relationships between the physical, physico-chemical and mechanical properties should be then determined within these groups.

The aim of the study was to recognise the accumulation of organic carbon (SOC) in the soils of Polish grasslands (GL) and to consider the possibility of increasing its sequestration in these soils. The Tiurin method (mineral soils) and the mass loss method (soil of organic origin) were used. It was found that: (i) the average SOC content of mineral soils is 2.44% and of organic soils - 10.42%; (ii) according to the Polish criteria, approximately 84% of GL mineral soils are classified as classes with high and very high SOC content, and over 15% and 1% - in classes with medium and low SOC content, respectively; more than 99% of organic soils belong to two classes with the highest SOC content and less than 1% to the class with an average content; (iii) according to the European Soil Bureau, the share of GL mineral soils with a high SOC content is slightly over 4%, medium - slightly over 47%, and low and very low - around 50%; for organic soils they are 67, 29, and 4%, respectively; (iv) the reserves of organic carbon in the 0-30 cm layer on the entire surface of GL soils amount to 412.7 Tg of SOC. There is considerable scope for increasing the SOC stock in meadow-pasture soils.

The article analyses the condition of organic farming in Poland on the basis of the data published by the Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection, the Central Statistical Office and available literature sources. The aim of the study was to assess the condition and prospects for the development of organic produc-tion in Poland. The results of the analysis indicate that there is a growing demand for organic products among consumers, which may contribute to the development of organic farming and an in-crease in the processing of organic products. However, in recent years, a decline in the number of organic farms and the total area of organic farming has been observed. Fodder plants, cereals as well as meadows and pastures are predominant in the structure of crops. Orchards, berries and vegetable cultivation as well as industrial crops are of lesser importance. Poultry, sheep and dairy cattle are predominant in organic livestock farming, whereas goats and cattle intended for meat account for a lower percentage. Among the organic agricultural products milk and dairy products are produced in the greatest quantities.

The global demand for organic foods has inspired the academicians and practicing professionals to explore consumer purchase behavior in this sector. The multiple promises that organic foods hold for the future – like sustainable food production, food safety, food security, nutrition and reduction of green-house gases – all might have influenced the recent rise of behavioral research in the organic food sector. Interestingly, Bangladesh has been a producer of organic foods since the early ‘80s; however, only a handful of studies could be traced that actually studied consumer behavior in this sector. The current paper explored the important roles that organic foods might play in Bangladesh, synthesized findings of past studies under Bangladesh context, and justified probable areas that might be investigated in future. Therefore, plausible gaps were explored in the existing literature pertaining to Bangladesh context and a tentative research agenda for future researchers was proposed.

The main objective of this study is to carry out a complex economic analysis of organic manure application. Researches were carried for years 2010-2015. Organic manure, a by-product of animal husbandry, is one of the oldest and most valuable materials in agriculture. The primary purpose of using organic manure is to improve soil fertility. Since the 90s, Hungary has been facing changes in the ownership of agricultural ventures, the number of big farms decreased and the amount of livestock was reduced in the main sectors of animal husbandry. Hungary, as a member of the European Union, has to conform to the current environmental protection regulations which also refer to the disposal of organic manure that can only be performed if significant investments are made. It can be concluded that the economic efficiency of organic manure application is primarily determined by transport distance and the specific transport method. In addition, the establishment of manure containers can be considered to be unproductive investments which affect the economic efficiency of using organic manure negatively.

Consumers are increasingly more interested in the issues associated with high-quality food (organic food); consequently, the number of organic farms and commercial establishments which off er organic products with quality certificates is growing. Podkarpackie voivodeship, thanks to certain advantages, is a favorable place for the development of organic farming. For the needs of this research, a survey was conducted in spring 2015 among 137 inhabitants of Rzeszów and the surrounding areas who declared to be consumers of organic food. An analysis of the results provides the conclusion that organic products are very positively evaluated by the respondents, since in their opinion they have a great impact on their health, which is the main reason for purchasing them. Sales and consumption growth of organic foods can be achieved by intensive advertising using the latest methods and techniques, as well as by educating society. These activities should be particularly targeted at the inhabitants of mediumsized towns, and a convincing argument should be made to draw attention to the ingredients in organic food.

Consumer opinion and behavior research plays an important role in the development of the market of specific products. Currently, research in the field of consumer behavior towards organic food, which is gaining popularity on the Polish market whose production is in line with the concept of sustainable development and the European Green Deal related to it, is of particular importance. The aim of the study was to analyze the opinion and behaviors of consumers as regards organic fruit and vegetables and the promotion of these products as a determinant of them. The data for the analyzes came from empirical research conducted in Lublin at the turn of 2019 and 2020 by means of a proprietary questionnaire. The research was carried out on a sample of 534 respondents aged over 18. The scope of the research covered the opinions and behaviors of consumers towards organic fruit and vegetables as well as the factors determining the commencement of making or increasing the frequency of purchases of these products. An attempt was also made to defi ne the relationship between the opinions and behaviors presented by consumers and their demographic and socio-economic characteristics. The results of the research show that half of the respondents purchased organic fruit and vegetables, of which only 1/4 claimed to do so regularly and quite often (several times a week). The respondents most often purchased these products in specialized stores – with organic food. According to the surveyed consumers, organic fruit and vegetables are rich in nutrients, healthy and safe, and produced using environmentally friendly methods. The most important factors influencing the increase in purchases and consumption and thus the development of the market for organic products were the increase in the availability of this product category in the places of everyday shopping and the reduction of their prices as the most important factors. The conducted research showed that for the respondents, promotional campaigns aimed at popularizing organic food, its values and impact on human health are not without significance.

This paper studies the opportunities for application of a new method elaborated by the author (1) for evaluation of the readiness of producers and traders for conversion to organic production or trade. The method was created as a result of a study of organic sector development and it is based on the determination of the most important factors in this development. The method relies on a simple evaluation scheme and calculations. It turns to be useful as just a pilot investigation of the five most important factors stated as indicators: preparation (in terms of knowledge and skills of managers/ entrepreneurs), motivation, resources, planning activities skills (considered separately of others because of their particular importance in the ‘organic’ approach), environmental protection and organic production measures undertaken recently. The investigation presented in this paper puts the method developed on theory into practice. Furthermore, it proves the conformability of the proposed method and its possible usefulness. In addition, the steps in starting the conversion are proposed in which an approach very different from the one used till now (based on the choice of a new production technology) is adapted. The accent here is on the management, overall control over the processes and achieving sustainable growth.

Understanding soil spatial variability and identifying soil parameters most determinant to soil organic carbon stock is pivotal to precision in ecological modelling, prediction, estimation and management of soil within a landscape. This study investigates and describes field soil variability and its structural pattern for agricultural management decisions. The main aim was to relate variation in soil organic carbon stock to soil properties and to estimate soil organic carbon stock from the soil properties. A transect sampling of 100 points at 3 m intervals was carried out. Soils were sampled and analyzed for soil organic carbon and other selected soil properties along with determination of dry aggregate and water-stable aggregate fractions. Principal component analysis, geostatistics, and state-space analysis were conducted on the analyzed soil properties. The first three principal components explained 53.2% of the total variation; Principal Component 1 was dominated by soil exchange complex and dry sieved macroaggregates clusters. Exponential semivariogram model described the structure of soil organic carbon stock with a strong dependence indicating that soil organic carbon values were correlated up to 10.8m.Neighbouring values of soil organic carbon stock, all waterstable aggregate fractions, and dithionite and pyrophosphate iron gave reliable estimate of soil organic carbon stock by state-space.

Opis:
Many countries are formulating organic agriculture or organic farming policies aimed at sustainable agricultural development. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: to understand the present situation of organic agriculture policies in Sri Lanka and also in other countries where successful organic agriculture is operating; identify problems in the organic agriculture sector; and suggest potential policy measures to be implemented in Sri Lanka in future. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a thorough literature review was conducted to study the suitable policies available in other countries and also in Sri Lanka at present. In the second stage, two field surveys were carried out using pre-tested questionnaires, from December 2019 to May 2020, in order to gather farmers’ and extension officers’ information related to organic farming policy suggestions. According to the findings of the literature review, organic systems in some countries are more integrated with national strategic plans and visions. Those governments are more involved in new initiatives and farmers are encouraged to go organic through reliable and feasible policies. Although Sri Lanka has a high potential for organic agriculture, at present it is at an initial stage. While most organic products in Sri Lanka go to the export market, a small portion is kept at local markets. Demand for organic products in export as well as domestic markets is increasing. Even though there are seven international food certification agencies operating in the country as external inspection and certification bodies, a limited number of accredited certifications exist for products on the domestic market. Results of the farmers’ survey showed that even if farmers have a significant level of knowledge, few of them practice organic farming due to several existing problems. Moreover, extension officers have also identified similar types of problems that are faced by the farmers related to organic farming. Evaluation of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) related to organic agriculture in the country helped to identify key problems facing policy-makers when balancing the supply and demand sides of organic products. Also, in developing organic agriculture, an effective linkage and coordination among government and private participants is crucial. Therefore, in Sri Lanka in this context, strategic focus on policy support for organic agriculture is needed. Current organic farming programs need to be revised in order to formulate policies covering all areas related to production, handling, processing, certification, labeling and marketing, in order to bring the benefits of organic agriculture to farmers, marketers and consumers in a fair manner.
