Opis:
Have been developed a scheme of enrichment (benification) of magnetite iron-ore concentrates with total content of Fet = 31 % in ore at magnetic separator and obtained a superconcentrate with Fet = 69,50 %. Experimentally determined that the reduction reaction degree of Fe by coal increases linearly with increasing of the content of Fe in concentrate. Certainly it has positive influence of decreasing the content of more difficult for reduction and poor magnetic iron containing components in the processing of wet magnetic separation (WMS). Almost all iron are in the form of good to reduce magnetite in the superconcentrates and enrichment of concentrate accompanying with growth of specific surface.

Opis:
Bentonite is the traditionally used binder in iron ore pelletization. However, it consists of up to 85% silica and alumina which are undesired acidic gangue in iron-making. In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and cornstarch were used as acidic gangue-free organic alternatives to bentonite in synthesizing iron pellets. Iron ore, water and the corresponding binder were mixed and rolled in a pelletizing disk to form green pellets. The green pellets were dried and subsequently indurated in a furnace at 1200 ℃ to form indurated pellets. To evaluate the effectiveness of the organic binders, the pellets produced were tested on various pellet properties. Known industrial pellet property standards and the bentonite binder were used as references. Carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and corn starch produced green pellets with average drop numbers of 7.20 ± 0.84, 5.60 ± 0.89 and 6.00 ± 1.00 respectively, compared to bentonite’s 5.00 ± 0.71. Dry pellets of average compressive strength 5.93 ± 0.09, 5.86 ± 0.03 and 11.52 ± 0.18 kg/pellet were produced by carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and corn starch respectively while bentonite’s averaged 5.60 ± 0.08 kg/pellet. For indurated pellets, carboxymethyl cellulose (210.2 ± 1.88 kg/pellet) and sodium lignosulfonate (198.1 ± 2.49 kg/pellet) pellets were weaker than those of bentonite (250.4 ± 2.06 kg/pellet) but satisfied the industrial requirement of 181.4 kg/pellet. A boron oxide additive (0.1 wt. %) was used to boost the strength of carboxymethyl cellulose indurated pellets to 252.6 ± 1.32 kg/pellet, rendering them superior to those of bentonite.

Opis:
The Sztoła River crosses Lesser Poland and Silesia voivodships in the region of Olkusz zinc and lead ores mining and sands extraction. It is one of the left-bank tributary of Biała Przemsza. Its sources are located southwest of Olkusz. In the geological structure of Sztoła water catchment area, on the basis of conducted drillings, the following deposits can be distinguished: Paleozoic, represented by Permian deposits, Mezozoic-Triassic deposits, and Cenozoic-Quaternary deposits (Buła 2000, Motyka 2010). Hydrodynamic conditions in the region of Sztoła have been strongly interrupted by the development of zinc and lead ores mining and a sand pit, which required an application of drainage. The first system of drainage was adits built in 16 th century, which resulted in a decrease of the groundwater table level from few to over a dozen meters (Żukowski 1946, Górnisiewicz 1975, Molenda 1977, Kosiński 1882). The intensive development of mining in this region began in the first half of 19 th century, along with appearance of new drainage techniques. The Sztoła River changed its character from draining to infiltrating on its the whole length as the effect of development of vast zinc and lead ores mine depression cone, related to the exploitation of the „Pomorzany” mine, and later with a gravitational drainage of sandpit „Szczakowa” (Witczak & Motyka 1975, Haładus et al. 2007). In the upper part of the river it resulted with a partial dry out of the riverbed. Water flowing in the river originated from the drainage of Olkusz zinc and lead ores mines and is directed there through Baba channel. A research conducted in the summer of 2014 examined the upper part of the Sztoła River. Groundwater taken from springs, as well as surface water, was collected, and the areas of critical riverbed dry out were identified. A complete physicochemical analysis was carried out in the AGH hydrogeochemical laboratory in Cracow. On the basis of the received data, the characteristics of chemical composition of groundwater and surface water were prepared. Their hydrochemical type, pH values, electrolytical conductivity was determined. Chemical composition was also presented in the selected graphical forms (Piper, Collins, Pie Chart). Based on analysis, the statistical parameters of composition of water from the research region were calculated. Furthermore, the quality of underground and surface water was evaluated according to the existing standards, and suitability to consumption by people was determined. The Obtained data were also compared with archival results of samples collected within the investigated area.

The mineralogical studies indicated that the Charagah ore deposit contains approximately 17% pyrolusite, 78% calcite and 3–4% quartz. Pyrolusite as a main valuable mineral is found in the forms of coarse and fine pyrolusites. The coarse grains pyrolusite with simple texture is liberated at 180 micrometers. Another kind of pyrolusite with particle size finer than 10 m is disseminated inside gangue phases. This kind of pyrolusite has important effect in beneficiation processes and can affect the manganese grade of the concentrate and its recovery negatively. By jigging machine a pre-concentrate with 20% MnO and a final tailing with about 13% manganese loss are obtained. Using tabling technique or wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and also their combination with jigging machine, production of a final pyrolusite concentrate with suitable grade but average recovery is possible. By jigging-tabling a concentrate with – 500+45 m size fraction, 44.3% MnO and 61.3% recovery is obtained while jigging-WHIMS produces a concentrate containing 52.6% MnO with a recovery up to 56.6% and d80 = 180 m.

Opis:
A biconical dense medium cyclone (BDMC) was applied to reject the gangue from a low-grade Pb-Zn sulfide ore for the first time. Based on mineralogy and heavy liquid separation tests, it was found that the rejection of gangue by the BDMC prior to grinding and flotation was promising. The results revealed that the particle size clearly affected the heavy liquid separation process. The effects of several parameters, such as medium specific gravity (SG), spigot diameter, tilt angle, cone angle and medium/ore mass ratio, on the yield of floats and on the metal recoveries in the floats were examined and the optimal parameters were determined. The results showed that 51.22% of floats were obtained with a lead recovery of 7.92% and a zinc recovery of 12.50%. The extended tests were further carried out with the BDMC being capable of throughputs about 3 t/h, which verified the results obtained in the laboratory experiments. The use of this equipment to pre-treat the refractory ore is promising.

Opis:
The mineral deposit Bor-Cerovo is a relatively simple Cu-(Fe)ore that is becoming poorer and more complex in texture with the depth of mining. The Bor Copper Mine has expanded mine workings to the Cerovo field margins, where the same type of porphyry copper ore was found for which the Bor Mine is known as one of largest in Europe. Under the oxidized zone in the vertical deposit section lie paragenetic mineral associations typical of the cementated zone, or a transitional layer from the primary mineralized rock. Average concentrations of sulphide copper and oxide copper in the primary rock range from 0.263% to 0.164% and from 0.102% to 0.008%, respectively. Concentration of the ore of simple mineral composition has given a product of unsatisfactory both concentrate quality and metal recovery. More study is felt necessary of the structural/textural properties, of the identified mineral relations, and of the rate of mineral product liberation for the given grind fineness. Mineralogical analyses were conducted in the course of laboratory (and technological) tests. It has been learned that chemical analyses of the floatation concentrated material alone were inadequate, especially where complex texture of intergrowths and poor ore were involved. Structural properties and complex integrowths, and concequently low liberation degree, were found to be the reason of poor concentration. This paper discusses importance of the mineral liberation measurement for the technological results of copper ore concentration at the Bor-Cerovo flotation plant, and explains the functional relation between the mineral liberation and the grind fineness. Data on the microscopy of ore texture and the mineral liberation degree presented in this paper are aimed at improving the recovery and grade of chalcopyrite concentrate in the Veliki Krivelj Flotation Plant. Ore microscopy in the laboratory and technological tests indicate that chemical analysis as a tool for monitoring ore flotation is insufficient, especially where the processed ore is complex-textured and poor.
Przeprowadzono analizę mineralogiczną podczas badań laboratoryjnych (i technologicznych). Artykuł ten omawia znaczenie pomiarów uwalniania minerału dla wyników technologicznych koncentracji miedzi w rudzie w zakładzie flotacyjnym Bor-Cerovo, i wyjaśnia funkcjonalną zależność miedzi uwalnianiem minerału a stopniem rozdrobnienia.

Scientific objective of this work was elaboration of radiometric method for the development of hydrometallurgical process for recovery of Cu from the copper ore. A neutron activation analysis (NAA) was identified as a very convenient tool for the process investigation. The samples of copper ore were activated in a nuclear reactor. The parameters of the neutron activation were calculated. Radioisotope 64Cu was selected as an optimal tracer, and it was used for the investigation of the leaching process. During the experiments, various processes applying leaching media such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and organic acids were investigated. The recovery of the metals using sulphuric acid was insufficient, around 10%. Investigated organic media also did not meet expectations. The best results were obtained in experiments with nitric acid. Up to 90% of Cu and other metals were extracted from the copper ore. Copper concentration calculations obtained by NAA were confimed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique. Both techniques gave comparable results, but the advantage of the NAA is a possibility for easy online measurements without shutting down or disturbing the system.

The analysis of the geophysical surveys results carried out in the Radzimowice area reveals that the anomalous zones of significant SP (self-potential) anomalies of natural SP fields do not substantially find a reflection in existing geological papers. Confrontation of existing geological elaborations with the results of SP analysis shows that the selfpotential studies expose significant elements of geological setting – i.e. run of faults, lithological boundaries, occurrence of ore mineralization – which can be helpful in clarifying the geological setting of the area. In the study, archived self-potential data were used and additionally new SP measurements were executed to justify their treatment as a valuable source of information.

Ecological and geochemical indicators have been widely accepted as tools with the potential for rapid risk assessment of metal contamination of bottom sediments. In this study we propose a selection of such indicators to characterize the potential ecological risks stemming from metal contamination of the bottom sediments of the Chechło reservoir (S Poland). The Chechło reservoir is located in an area formerly occupied by zinc and lead ore mining and processing industry. High amounts of metals, especially zinc (39.37–4772.00 mg/kg d.m.), cadmium (0.37–21.13 mg/kg d.m.) and lead (4.50–434.49 mg/kg d.m.) have been found in the bottom sediments. Both geochemical (CD – contamination degree) and ecological indices (mean PECQ) were indicative of bottom sediment contamination and their potential toxicity to living organisms. Most of the bottom sediment samples (71%) examined were toxic for Heterocypris incongruens, while only 9% of the samples were toxic to Sinapis alba. However, no significant correlations between the metal content and the response of the test organisms were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses (PCA) showed that silt and clay fractions were the key factors influencing the metal content in the sediments. Our study makes a contribution to building evidence of the need to integrate several indices for the assessment of environmental risks related to the presence of metals in bottom sediments rather than relying on a single one.

Opis:
The relationship between ore mineralogy and downstream processing is well known in the mining industry. In fact, the very definition of a mineral deposit as an ore body depends on its susceptibility to processing in an economical manner. With an ore tracking system, the information about each ore block, gained during exploration and mining, could be used as input data to the mineral processing operation. This would allow the real-time optimization and control of the ore processing. A smart ore tracking system can be developed by using soft sensor technique. The ore tracking system utilizes the real time information available in both SCADA and database of a mine. Using the ore geological data and the tonnage of ore being treated, the ore tracking system calculates and provides ore type information such as ore mixing percentage, ore grade and ore hardness and density. The ore type information provided by the ore tracking system can be made available at all process units at a mine, including primary crusher, primary stock pile, primary scrubbers, secondary scrubbers, secondary crushers, re-crusher stock pile, dense media separation stock piles, dense media separation feeders, and the feed to next processing plant. The smart ore tracking system, developed originally for a diamond mine, can be used for other mines, such as iron ore, coal, chromite ore, manganese ore, etc.

Opis:
Comminution in a High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) device is considered as one of the most efficient method to break particles, in terms of the energy utilization. Two main types of the rolls linings are applied in hard ore grinding: studded and hexagonal, which show varied characteristics of operation and have different lifetime of service. The article concerns the analysis of HPGR device operation for various linings of the rolls. Two pilot-scale test programmes were run and performance of both types of rolls was tested in terms of energy consumption, technological effects measured by means of comminution ratio, lifetime service as well as economic aspects. Results of investigation show, that much longer lifetime service was obtained for the studded rolls, while hexagonal ones are more favourable from economic scope. The feed material for the HPGR comminution tests was Polish copper ore from two divisions of processing plants of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. Taking into account that industrial comminution operations in mining and mineral processing sector consume over 50% of total energy utilized for ore treatment operations, the problem is of a major significance, especially in terms of optimization of hard ore crushing and grinding circuits.

Opis:
A proposal of the nip zone angle determination in high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crush-ing process is presented in the paper. Knowledge of the nip zone angle value makes it possible to deter-mine the real maximum pressing force in the high-pressure comminution. Two methods of determination of this maximum pressure were proposed and verified. The first method is based on the roll’s geometry and the change of the HPGR chamber’s volume together with the roll rotation, while the second one considers the outlet gap width. Results of the nip zone angle calculations according to both methods are similar and show that the nip zone angle is around 3o. The verification was carried out in a piston-die press and experimental results show that the product size distributions from HPGR and piston-die press are similar. The methodology of the nip zone angle determination presented in the paper has then its practical confirmation. A proper determination of the nip zone border makes it possible to calculate the comminution probability of given type of material and is a basis for the HPGR crushing process modeling and optimization.

This papers shows that frothers such as aliphatic alcohols (CnH2n+1OH), poly(propylene glycols) (HO(C3H6O)mH), poly(propylene glycol) alkyl ethers (CnH2n+1O(C3H6O)mH) and poly(ethylene glycol) alkyl ethers (CnH2n+1O(C2H4O)mH), can be used for collectorless flotation of a sample of carbonaceous copper shale manually separated from the Kupferschiefer stratiform copper ore. It was shown that flotation is influenced by the type and dose of frothers. The best flotation results were obtained with tri(propylene glycol) butyl ether C4P3, tri(propylene glycol) propyl ether C3P3 and tri(propylene glycol) P3. For these frothers, the yield vs. frother dose relationship was in the form of convex curves indicating that carbonaceous copper shale can float at relatively low dosages of the frother. It means that these frothers can be used for pre-flotation of carbonaceous matter from the investigated copper ore. Other frothers formed concave yield–frother dose relationships and were less effective.

Opis:
In this study, it was discovered that a mixture of dodecylamine (DDA)-kerosene demonstrated a stronger collecting ability for pure quartz and higher selectivity for magnetite ore. The relationship between the DDA-kerosene composition and mineral flotation performance on reverse flotation of magnetite ore was investigated. The results showed that floatability of the floating material increased when the DDA consumption increased. Specifically, during flotation, the fine particles (-0.074 mm fraction) selectively floated with DDA-kerosene. The difficult to float coarser particles (+0.074 mm fraction) with high content of quartz, required higher DDA dosage. However, higher DDA input during the flotation process did not necessarily yield better outcomes. The best results were obtained for 40/60 amine-to-oil ratio, as the quartz floated markedly with smaller magnetite loss and the flotation behavior was superior to pure DDA. Magnetite concentrates with 1.83% SiO2 and 71.04% Fe were produced using 120 g/Mg of DDA-kerosene (WDDA=40%).

Crushing processes taking place in high-pressure grinding rolls devices (HPGR) are currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore size reduction in terms of the energy consumption. The HPGR products are characterized by a fine particle size and the micro-cracks formation in individual particles, which appears in downstream grinding processes, decreasing their energy consumption. The purpose of the paper was to analyze the effectiveness of a ball mill grinding process and flotation operations depending on the changeable conditions of run of the HPGR crushing process. The research programme carried out included crushing tests in the laboratory scale HPGR device at various settings of the operating pressure volume and selected qualitative properties of the feed material (i.e. particle size distribution). On the basis of obtained results the models, defining the grinding process effectiveness as a function of changeable conditions of HPGR process run, were determined. Based on these models the optimal grinding time in a ball mill was specified which is, in turn, the basis for optimization of operation the technological comminution circuits for a given material type. The obtained results proved that the application of HPGR devices in given copper ore comminution circuit may improve the effectiveness of downstream grinding process what leads to improvement of the entire circuit work efficiency through decreasing the process energy consumption and enhancing the product size reduction.

Opis:
The Cerattepe (Artvin) mine contains volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in northeastern Turkey. This is a kuroko type deposit located in Late Cretaceous volcanic, intrusive and sedimentary rocks, and has a structure with dense alteration stages. In this study, batch flotation tests were carried out to determine the flotation behavior of a new sample (mix ore), that was the combination of two different ores with different flotation behaviors. The mixed ore contains 2.18% Cu, 1.46% Zn, (Cu/Zn ratio 1.49) 38.35% Fe, and 41.6% S content. An efficient separation of copper minerals from zinc minerals using the conventional selective flotation method could not be achieved due to complex mineralogy and very low liberation degree. Therefore, sequential selective flotation resulted in poor Cu recovery. The effects of flotation parameters such as collector type, collector amount, particle size, and pH conditions, were investigated to obtain a bulk copper-zinc concentrate. The best results were obtained using thionocarbamate (Aero 3894) and dithiophosphine (Aerophine 3418A) collector reagents at d80=40 μm particle size. Under optimal conditions (grain size, d80=40 μm, pH=11, amount of collector reagent 60 g/t (Aero 3894), frother (MIBC)=50 g/t, solid ratio=32%, flotation time=8 min.), a bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 13% Cu and 9.5% Zn was obtained with a copper yield of 84.4% and a zinc yield of 88.9%. The concentrate mass pull was 13%. After rougher and two-stage scavenger flotation, a concentrate (rougher concentrate + scavenger products) was obtained with a mass pull of 22%. Copper and zinc recoveries of this concentrate were 91.8% and 92.5%, respectively.

Opis:
Mimetite Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl, vanadinite Pb 5 (VO 4 ) 3 Cl and pyromorphite Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl belong to the apatite supergroup. They form in oxidation zones of lead ore deposits. These minerals have high thermal stability (Dong et al. 2002) and low solubility (Flis et al. 2011) thus they have many applications. Pyromorphite and mimetite are especially used to immobilize lead in contaminated soils and hazardous industrial wastes (Ma et al. 1993, Kim et al. 2005, Bajda et al. 2007), it is therefore important to know the impact of various factors on their properties. Crystal structure of apatites corresponds to the general formula M 5 (TO 4 ) 3 X, where M are bi - valent cations distributed on two distinct crystallographic sites, TO 4 is a trivalent oxyanion and X is a monovalent anion. The structure and chemistry of apatite allow for numerous substitutions of metal cation and anionic complexes (Hughes & Rakovan 2002, Pan & Fleet 2002). It was found that substitutions cause variations in the unit cell parameters and chemical properties of these minerals (Botto et al. 1997), but there are no articles presenting variations in the whole series. Therefore, these researches present changes of lattice parameters for pyromorphite-vanadinite and mimetite-vanadinite solid solution series. Pyromorphite, mimetite and vanadinite crystallize in hexagonal symmetry (the space group P6 3 /m) (Dong et al. 2002, Pan & Fleet 2002). They form continuous isomorphic series. The aim of study was to examine how lattice parameters of pyromorphite-vanadinite and mimetite-vanadinite solid solutions series change with increasing vanadium content and characterize these pheno mena. Crystallographic studies were conducted on synthetic pyromorphite, mimetite and vanadinite and minerals with intermediate compositions Pb 5 (TO 4 ) 3 Cl, where T = P + V or As + V, of various P/V or As/V ratios. Samples were analyzed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) using RIGAKU Smartlab X-Ray diffractometer with Cu radiation in a 10° to 110° 2Θ range at a step size of 0.02 2Θ and a rate of 2 s per step. The phase identification was carried out using the X’Rayan computer program and X-ray standard patterns in the form of ICDD files (card 19-0701, 19-0683 and 43-1461). The unit-cell refinement and Rietveld structure refinement were made using the FullProf Suite computer program package (Rodriguez-Carvajal 1993). The Rietveld refinement has shown systematic changes in unit cell parameters of studied samples depending on their chemical composition. Dimensions of unit cell parameters of pyromorphite-vanadinite solid solution series increase linearly with the substitution of vanadate ions in the structure of pyromorphite. Lattice parameter “a” increase in the range of 9.987–10.325 Å, while lattice parameter “c” increase in the range of 7.33–7.343 Å. In case of the mimetite-vanadinite solid solution series, lattice parameter “a” increase (10.251–10.325 Å range), whereas lattice parameter “c” decrease (7.442–7.343 Å range) linearly with the substitution of vanadate ions in the structure of mimetite. This situation indicates the equivalent position of the tetrahedral TO 4 in the structure of lead apatite.

Hydrometallurgical treatment of complex copper sulfidic ores, by-products and concentrates requires aggressive, oxidative leaching methods and application of Fe(III) ions and oxygen or bacteria assisted environment. Leach liquors generated in the process are usually copper and iron-rich solutions of high acidity. Such conditions require the application of suitably strong and selective reagent to extract copper in SX operations. This paper discusses the copper extraction behavior of commercial copper rea-gents: LIX 984N, LIX 612N-LV and Acorga M5640. Aqueous feed solutions used in SX studies were PLS’ generated in atmospheric leaching of commercial flotation concentrate, produced at Lubin Concen-trator (KGHM). McCabe-Thiele diagrams were generated and copper net transfer values were compared and discussed. It was shown that stronger modified aldoxime reagents (Acorga, LIX 612) are superior over non-modified salicylaldoxime/ketoxime mixture (LIX 984N). Particularly, the ester modified Acor-ga M5640 showed advantages in recovery and copper net transfer values.

Opis:
Refractory gold ores have poor gold recoveries with direct cyanide leaching. Typically the refractoriness is due to encapsulation of the gold particles inside the host mineral. To liberate gold for leaching the host mineral must be broken by mechanical or chemical means. The aim of this study was to study the effect of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and slurry density on pressure oxidation of pyrite-arsenopyrite gold concentrate. Batch oxidation tests in an autoclave were done using a factorial design. Different responses were measured and analysed to study effect of the three factors and oxidation kinet-ics. Generally, high slurry density required high temperature and oxygen partial pressure to reach com-plete oxidation. Oxidation kinetics at 225°C temperature, with 1050 kPa oxygen partial pressure and 15% slurry density was found to be fastest resulting in complete conversion of sulfides in 30 minutes. At 195°C, 700 kPa oxygen partial pressure and 10% slurry density, the oxidation kinetics for complete sul-fide conversion was about 60 minutes. Slurry densities above 10% had an adverse effect on the oxidation rate, when the temperature was below 225°C and oxygen partial pressure below 1050 kPa.

In all working Saudi gold mines, ores are treated using the hazardous cyanidation process. Some Saudi gold ores, such as Al-Amar, is known to be refractory to cyanidation. In this work, we have examined the extraction of gold from Al-Amar gold ore by the much environmentally safer and efficient thiosulfate process. The run of mine (ROM) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) feed, that is obtained after separation of copper concentrate from ROM, samples were found to contain 6.5 and 3.6 ppm gold, respectively. The mineralogical microscopic investigations of ROM samples confirmed that fine gold specks were scattered and encapsulated inside sulfide or quartz base minerals. This could explain the expected reason of the difficult leaching of gold by cyanidation. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the CIL feed contained quartz, pyrite, sphalerite and chlorite minerals. After detailed leaching studies of CIL feed, almost 70% of gold could be extracted at 0.2 M ammonium thiosulfate and 0.3 M ammonium hydroxide after 24 h. Addition of copper(II) as <0.2 mM only slightly enhanced the gold leaching in the ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Gold leaching drastically decreased as the concentration of copper(II) increased 0.2 mM due to the degradation of S2O3²¯.

Iron oxide bearing wastes (IOBS) are produced at every part of processing stage of sinter, molten iron and steel production. They are hard to handle and in many cases are stockpiled only to be a source of environmental pollution. However, they can be balled into pellets. Pellets characterized by good ballability values are transportable and recyclable as they can withstand stress without disintegrating back to dust. Yet, ballability is affected by certain factors like the grain sizes of the materials, the moisture and binder contents of the ball mix, wettability of the balled materials and the processing perimeters of the granulator. The objective of this research work is to investigate the factors affecting ballability of mixture of iron ore concentrates and iron oxide bearing wastes in metallurgical processing. The parameters under consideration were: grain size of materials, the moisture contents, speed of balling disc, IOBS and bentonite (binder) contents of the balled mix. The investigation was carried out by balling different volume fractions of mix containing iron oxide concentrate and IOBS using a balling disc and testing the resulting balls for green compressive strength using an universal testing machine. It was found that the ballability of the mixture of iron ore concentrate and IOBS increases as grain sizes of the materials reduce but increases as the moisture contents and IOBS content increase up to an optimum value of moisture content in the mix before it starts to reduce. The ballability also increases along with the speed of the granulator (balling disc) within the limit of this work. An increase in ballability with a slight raise in bentonite content in the mix was observed as well.

Due to the occurrence of zinc and lead ore deposits in dolomite rocks, the sphalerite concentrates obtained from these ores contain an admixture of dolomite. In practice, a substantial amount of magnesium included in zinc ores passes to the last production stage, i.e. zinc electrolysis. The magnesium present in electrolyte impairs electrical conductance and appears in the technical and economical indexes. This paper deals the attempts to remove magnesium removal from initial sphalerite concentrates by means of chemical flotation using spent electrolyte derived from zinc electrolysis. The authors attempt to substantiate the existing relationships, as well as to derermine the optimum conditions for the procedure suggested. The leaching efficiency of magnesium amounted to about 80%, and is dependent upon the stage of the leaching. Losses of zinc were below 2%, and the magnesium concentration in solution amounted to about 20%. These solution can produce magnesium and zinc, which will be presented in the following paper.
Występowanie złóż rud cynku i ołowiu w skałach dolomitowych sprawia, że otrzymane koncentraty sfalerytowe zawierają domieszkę dolomitu. Praktyka wskazuje, że znaczna część wprowadzanego magnezu z surowcami cynkowymi przechodzi do ostatniej fazy produkcji, elektrolizy cynku. Obecność magnezu w elektrolicie obniża przewodnictwo elektryczne elektrolitu i powoduje pogorszenie wskaźników techniczno-ekonomicznych. Opracowanie ukierunkowano wokół doświadczalnego zobrazowania istniejących zależności i ustalenia optymalnych warunków zaproponowanej procedury.

In this paper the contamination degree of water from reservoirs and streams located in the area of Landscape-Nature Protected Complex "Żabie Doły” was determined. Contemporary water chemistry was formed as a result of long-term exploitation of zinc and lead ores and the current activity of the Orzeł Bialy SA company. The physicochemical analysis of water indicated a high degree of anthropopression. In the part of analyzed reservoirs and streams extremely low pH value of water and elevated concentrations of sulfates and metals such as zinc, lead, iron and cadmium were observed.

The Anini iron ore contains mainly ferriferous hematite rocks with inclusions of quartz and clay. The chemical analysis showed that the average content of iron is 55% while SiO2 and Al2O3 is 26.20% and 12%, respectively. The XRD mineralogical analysis confirmed that the prevailing mineral phase are hematite, quartz, clay and some inclusions of calcite in this matrix. According to the tests, preliminary desliming by washing provides iron 62% is the concentrate while SiO2 decreases from 26.20% to 2.30% and Al2O3from 12% to 3%. The calculated partial basicity index Ip= (CaO/SiO2) was 1.07, meaning that the washed-out ore achieves standards to be used in metallurgy. The by-products remaining after washing (quartz, clay and a small content of iron) can be used in cement production.

Iron production is one of the production processes that create a large number of negative externalities towards their surroundings. Iron production is based on the use of a wide range of production operations, which include not only the blast furnace process but also the treatment and processing of ores, sintering, pelletizing and processing of metallurgical waste and its possible storage. All parts of the blast furnace process can have a negative impact on the environment. Within the individual parts of the blast furnace plant, a number of pollutants are produced which negatively affect the environment. They can have both solid and gaseous states. In the case of solid emissions, it is airborne dust, and the gaseous form represents pollutants in the form of sulphur, nitrogen or carbon oxides. From the point of view of the blast furnace plant structure itself, blast furnace, agglomeration processes, palletization processes or the processing of waste from production can be classified as emission points. The article deals with the classification of basic impacts of blast furnace production on the environment. It analyses in detail the negative externalities in ore sintering. It also deals with the analysis of research, which was focused on the degree of reduction of iron oxides ore. The efficiency of the reduction process is crucial in terms of resource use, but also the overall amount of negative externalities. The research was carried out in the environment of a selected iron producer in the Czech Republic.

In this paper different selectivity parameters were considered which formulae was based on the content of useful component in the feed, concentrate and tailing. It was shown that the impact of chemical analysis on the selectivity parameters was small and the error determined by means of partial derivative approach for a copper ore upgraded by flotation was negligible. Also experimental errors were found to be insignificant. The largest errors occurred for approximation of the upgrading data with inadequately selected selectivity indicators.

Opis:
In this work, a role of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) in the flotation performance of a nickel ore was studied and mechanism was discussed in detail. The results showed that the presence of lizardite interferes with the flotation performance of pentlandite. The adsorption of SHMP at the lizardite/solution interface and the removal of magnesium ions from lizardite surface overcompensated the positive charge on the lizardite particle, and made its zeta potential negative. The interaction between lizardite and pentlandite changed from attractive to repulsive in the presence of SHMP. Thus, the addition of SHMP made the mixed sample of pentlandite and lizardite more dispersed, and significantly reduced the adverse effect of lizardite on the flotation of pentlandite. However, when the content of lizardite in the mixed ore was increased, the effect of SHMP weakened. Therefore, in flotation of a nickel ore containing a large amount of lizardite (46% w/w), SHMP usage is not suitable at the roughing stage due to the fact that lizardite in the pulp will consume most of the SHMP, and hence the removal of lizardite slimes from pentlandite surface become impossible. Based upon the results, SHMP usage is found to be suitable at the cleaning stage to improve the grade of concentrate.

Opis:
The high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology is currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore comminution from the scope of the energy consumption. Throughput and energetic models of performance are quite well developed, but technological models predicting the comminution effects still needs an in-depth research. In the paper author presents the method of modeling of HPGR products’ particle size distribution by using suitable mathematical models. A basis of the HPGR perfor-mance assessment and HPGR-based crushing circuits design is a product’s particle size distribution. In order to precisely determine the particle size distribution of a HPGR product, parameters of product’s particle size distributions should be conditional on the main technical parameters of the roller press like operating pressure and the speed of rolls. The most accurate approximation of a distribution of size parti-cle appears to be Weibull’s truncated distribution and it is possible to obtain significant relationships between the approximation formula and the value of operating pressure, or feed characteristics. It makes possible a determination of mass recoveries of the product’s respective size fractions and the productivity planning. Instead of pressure, the other HPGR operating parameters can be applied, but the pressure value appears to produce the most relevant relationship. A determination of HPGR product’s particle size dis-tribution is a basis of the press operation simulation analysis.

Opis:
Hydrometallurgical processing of copper-bearing materials (ores, concentrates, by-products) is usually done with the use of acidic or ammonia leaching. In the case where a leaching feed material contains significant amounts of carbonate rocks and iron minerals the second method is preferential due to a higher process selectivity. However, it can also be problematic considering possible ammonia transfer during the subsequent extraction process. The paper presents results of extraction of copper(II) from ammonia leach solutions. The effect of a type of extractant, its concentration and type of diluent in organic phase on extraction efficiency and ammonia transfer was studied. A few commercial extractants were examined, namely LIX 84-I, LIX 984N, LIX 54-100. The results clearly indicate that in the case of extraction systems using hydroxyoximes the extraction efficiency is remarkably higher than for βdiketone reagent. Presented studies proved that extraction efficiency of Cu(II) is also dependent on the type of diluent and is less favourable for systems with non-aliphatic diluents. It was observed that ammonia co-extraction occurs and depends on examined parameters. Scrubbing of loaded organic phase showed that ammonia can be removed almost completely using double wash with sulfuric acid solution.

This study focused on the extraction of nickel from a low-grade lateritic ore. The characterization of representative samples was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and microscopic mineralogical studies. Nickel was uniformly distributed in iron (hydr)oxide minerals. The pre-concentration of nickel was attempted by magnetic separation, but was unsuccessful. The effect of the type of lixiviant, acid concentration, S/L ratio, time, and temperature were investigated in the atmospheric leaching process. Based on the experimental data, optimum conditions for the maximum recovery of nickel were determined under the following conditions: 5 M H2SO4, 25% (w/v), 90 ºC, and two hours. Pre-calcination, for increasing nickel extraction by converting goethite to hematite, was carried out on raw ores at different times (30-180 minutes) and temperatures (180-540 ºC). Recovery was found increasing from 69 to 95% under the same conditions. Kinetic studies were conducted by fitting the data with Shrinking Core (SC) models. The study determined, from the estimate of activation energy, that the rate of reaction controlled by chemical reaction.

This work covers the pollution of the atmosphere during the work of the Mikhailovsky Mining and Refining Facility which is located within 100 km from the city of Kursk, in the city of Zheleznogorsk. Over the past few years in the whole world, the anthropogenic activity, connected mainly with the locations of mineral production and those of mineral treatment and processing, has become increasingly dangerous for the natural environment. Resource development in open pits causes the formation of inorganic dust. The dust is released into the atmosphere at all stages of the enterprise’s technical process. The principal sources generating inorganic dust during open mining of iron deposits include: blasting operations in an open pit, the work of transfer points, the enrichment process at a factory, pellet firing as well as dusting from the surfaces of stock dumps and dry tailings beaches.

Sampling campaign has followed with samples being submitted to chemical and mineral liberation analyses. A quantitative analysis has enabled to link copper flotation response to the type of copper bearing minerals and physiochemical parameters such as redox potential (Eh), dissolved oxygen (DO), EDTA extractable Cu and Fe. Data from the mineral liberation analysis (MLA) have highlighted an important process- relevant information explaining the variable floatability in different particle size ranges. A low chalcopyrite recovery can be linked to the non-sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen inside the copper selective flotation. Given the finely-disseminated copper bearing minerals, copper losses due to particle locking could be suggested as well.

The dynamic froth stability factor and the maximum froth depth were measured by using a non-overflowing flotation cell under various flotation conditions. The results were also related to the separation selectivity and efficiency of the flotation. The experimental results showed that the dynamic froth stability factor and the maximum froth depth can be increased 1.2-2 fold by using the Al2O3 nanoparticles. These increments led to significant improve in the froth recovery. In terms of the froth stability and the flotation performance, the Al2O3 nanomaterial was the best, followed by Fe2O3 and SiO2. In addition, the flotation recovery increased from 83 to 91%, and the grade of the concentrate increased from 44 to 60% by using the Al2O3 nanoparticles.

Crushing plants are of great interest in reducing a particle size of rocks and ores as milling operations need to consider sustainable development. Since the crushing plants operate under harsh conditions and involve very abrasive material, multiple factors can influence their performance. This paper assesses a number of factors affecting the performance of the crushing plant by addressing the critical design parameters and consideration of ore characteristics, operability and maintainability. Due to the fact that ore properties remain the same during milling, its control may become difficult for yield and quality of a product. However, an operation factor can contribute positively to the performance if it is well managed by experienced operators. The present paper also considers the operational, instrumental, mechanical and maintenance aspects of crushing plant, focusing on the capacity and quality.

Opis:
Iron ore having high-sulfur content causes problems in the concentrate production, pelletizing, and steel-making processes and environmental issues such as sulfur dioxide emission during the concentrate pelletizing process, and effect on steel quality. The current study was focused on the removal of sulfur from iron ore concentrate using chemical leaching technique. Magnetite iron ore concentrate was chosen for this purpose. The results obtained from the study showed that more than 90% of the total sulfur content was removed from the iron ore concentrate by the chemical leaching. Effects of several parameters, including temperature, stirring speed, particle size, and use of organic solvent on the sulfur removal was investigated by a series of experimental conditions. After optimizing the experimental conditions, it was demonstrated that in addition to sulfur, more than 80% of phosphorus, another important impurity, was also removed from the iron ore concentrate. In addition, one of the major advantages of our proposed method was the transformation of mineral pyrites to useful byproducts such as elemental sulfur.

Opis:
Scandium and its compounds have excellent properties, and are widely used in cutting-edge fields such as optics, electronics, and alloys. Thus, scandium is an important strategic metal. However, scandium is extremely sparsely distributed in the earth's crust, rarely occurs as an independent mineral, and requires a complex recovery process. Therefore, the study of the extraction of scandium is of great practical significance. This study examined the leaching test and kinetics of scandium under the acid leaching system of refractory anatase ore. Under appropriate two-stage countercurrent leaching conditions, the first stage of the particle size of fraction of -0.074 mm 82.6%, initial H2SO4 concentration of 6 mol/L, leaching temperature of 100 °C, acid/solid ratio of 3 ml/g, stirring speed of 300 rpm, and leaching time of 50 min; and the second stage of the initial H2SO4 concentration of 11 mol/L, leaching temperature of 150 °C, acid/solid ratio of 4 ml/g, stirring speed of 300 rpm, and leaching time of 50 min, a scandium leaching rate of 96.98% was achieved. The kinetics of scandium leaching conformed to a shrinking-core model, and sulfuric acid concentration and temperature were the most important parameters affecting the scandium leaching rate. The kinetic analysis of scandium leaching at different sulfuric acid concentrations showed that as the concentration increased, the sulfuric acid leaching of scandium changed from being chemical reaction-controlled to internal diffusion-controlled, and the apparent reaction order was 1.2429. The kinetics of scandium leaching at different temperatures showed that the sulfuric acid leaching of scandium was reaction-controlled and the apparent activation energy was 42.21 kJ-mol-1.

Opis:
Abstract. The main task of research was to quantitatively and qualitatively identify rare and associated elements that occur within a cassiterite-sulphide mineralization zone hosted Precambrian - Lower Paleozoic metamorphic rochi in the Stara Kamienica schist belt making up the part of the Izera-Karhonosze Massif. Over 70 samples from archive boreholes and abandoned Sn-ore mines were examined using modern methods like portable pXRF, geochemical analysis (ICP-MS, WD-XRF, GF-AAS), polarizing microscopy, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scaning electron microscopy with EDS system (SEM-EDS). Preliminary results show interesting concentrations of associated elements such as Zn (max 0.56%), Pb (max 0.7%), Cu (max 0.33%), As (max 0.55%), and some rare elements like In, Re, Nb, Co, Bi, Pt, V, La and Ce.
