Opis:
In this paper, the energy losses in big band saw machines are investigated. These losses are caused by the geometric and angular inaccuracies with which the leading wheels are made. Expressions for calculating the kinetic energy of the mechanical system in the ideal and the real cases are obtained. For this purpose, expressions for calculating the velocities of the centers of the masses in two mutually perpendicular planes are obtained. A dependence for calculation of the kinetic energy losses of the mechanical system in final form is received. Optimization procedure is used to determine the values of the parameters at which these losses have minimum values. The proposed study can be used to minimize energy losses in other classes of woodworking machines.

Mathematical modelling of the migration of pollutants in the groundwater environment requires knowledge of the values of transport and sorption parameters. The aim of this study was 1) to determine the values of advection, dispersion and sorption parameters of selected tracers that are transported through a porous medium, and 2) to verify the applied parameters estimation procedure. The authors examined the migration of a solution containing conservative and reactive tracers (chloride, nitrate, lithium and ammonium ions) through a sample of medium sand. The soil sample for the column test was taken from an aquifer near the Tursko groundwater intake (Wielkopolska province, Poland). The parameter estimation procedure, conducted in the MATLAB environment, included the numerical solution of the differential equations of transport and sorption, and the application of the numerical optimization method. During the identification, the authors tested twelve mathematical models including the advection-dispersion model, as well as single and hybrid (i.e. two-site) sorption models. The authors made a comparison of parameter values obtained by means of the global and local optimization method. The fitting quality was assessed by calculating the root mean square error RMSE and correlation coefficient r. As a result of the research, the authors determined the values of the advection-dispersion parameters: hydraulic conductivity k, effective porosity n e, and longitudinal dispersivity α. The authors found out that the nature oflithium ions migration is best captured by the single sorption model (equilibrium sorption), whereas the nature of ammonium ions migration is by the hybrid model with irreversible sorption. Lithium ions on the tested soil revealed low sorption intensity, ammonium ions showed medium intensity, while nitrate ions were transported at the same rate as chloride ions, exhibiting no retardation. The verification of parameter estimation in the MATLAB environment was carried out by comparing it against the alternative, well-known and often tested method, based on analytical solutions of the transport and sorption equation, combined with optimization within the FIELD and KLUTE-STEP programmes.

This paper addresses the robust capacitated international sourcing problem (RoCIS), which consists of selecting a subset of suppliers with finite capacity, from an available set of potential suppliers internationally located. This problem was introduced by González-Velarde and Laguna in [1], where they propose a deterministic solution method based on tabu search memory strategies. The pro cess consists of three steps: build an initial solution, create a neighborhood of promising solutions and perform a local search in the neighborhood. In this work we propose improving the construction of the initial solution, the cons truction of the neighborhood, the local search, and the intensification and diversification balance. Experimental evidence shows that the improved tabu solution with diver sification outperforms the best solutions reported for six of the instances considered, increases by 18% the number of best solutions found and reduces by 44% the deviation of the best solution found, respect to the best algorithm reported.

This paper deals with a robust multiobjective optimization problem involving nonsmooth/nonconvex real-valued functions. Under an appropriate constraint qualification, we establish necessary optimality conditions for weakly robust efficient solutions of the considered problem. These optimality conditions are presented in terms of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker multipliers and convexificators of the related functions. Examples illustrating our findings are also given.

The paper presents optimization of elements in a storage water heater construction. Two optimization criteria are taken into account: energy saving and minimum costs of materials, used in the construction of a water heater. The construction elements used in a heater have significant influence on the value of energy consumption. Basic construction elements of the storage water heater are shortly described. Fundamental physical and mechanical properties of selected materials used in a thermal insulation of the heaters are shown. The optimization task is delineated and an object of the optimization is also schematically presented. Additionally, the paper contains a mathematical model of the optimization and a range of decision variables. The Pareto-optimal solution points are calculated. These points decide on the values of five decision variables. When designing the storage water heater appliances, these optimization algorithms can be used to get the optimal material costs and energy saving. The paper is strictly focused on the cost of the materials used, not the cost of the heater manufacturing itself. Additional costs can be added by processing the considered material, for example polyurethane foam or by performing foamed polystyrene molders - properly to heater dimensions. The scale of additional costs surely depends on an output volume and technical capacities of a manufacturing plant - for example the size of machine park. Additional costs related to specific construction materials can be analyzed in other, individual consideration.

Opis:
Sensitive MEMS-based thermal flow sensors are the best choice for monitoring the patient’s respiration prompt diagnosis of breath disturbances. In this paper, open space micro-calorimetric flow sensors are investigated as precise monitoring tools. The differential energy balance equation, including convection and conduction terms, is derived for thermal analysis of the considered sensor. The temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of the thin silicon-oxide membrane layer is considered in the energy balance equation. The derived thermal non-linear differential equation is solved using a well-known analytical method, and a finite-element numerical solution is used for the confirmation. Results show that the presented analytical model offers a precise tool for evaluating these sensors. The effects of flow and thin membrane film parameters on thermo-resistive micro-calorimetric flow sensors’ performance and sensitivity are evaluated. The optimization has been performed at different flow velocities using a genetic algorithm method to determine the optimum configuration of the considered flow sensor. The geometrical parameters are selected as a decision variable in the optimization procedure. In the final step, using optimization results and curve-fitting, the expressions for the optimum decision variables have been derived. The sensor’s optimum configuration is achieved analytically based on flow velocity with the analytical terms for optimum decision variables.

The method of supporting decisions under risk was presented in this paper. Making decision under risk takes place when a result of a given decision is not explicit and depends on the condition of the environment. A decision-making process based on multiobjective optimization has been presented in this paper. Methods of multiobjective optimization do not give one unique solution, but a whole set of them. A decision making relies on interactive conducting of the decision making process. Selection of given decision is made by way of solving a problem with parameters defining aspirations of a decision maker and the evaluation of obtained results. A decision maker defines a parameter, for which a solution is indicated. Then he or she evaluates the received solution by either accepting or rejecting it. In the second case a decision maker provides a new parameter value and a problem is solved again for the new parameter.39-50

The paper presents the method of facilitating joint decision making in a competitive environment. We deal with a joint decision when the group of people with different preferences are to make one single decision. The joint decision selection process is modelled with the use of multi-criteria optimization task. It is solved with the use of reference point method. This method is an interactive method in which every person specifies its requirements in the form of a reference point, expressing the desired values for its evaluation function. On the basis of the provided reference point, a scalar achievement function is built. Maximization of this function generates a solution of the multi-criteria task. This solution is presented to every person for acceptance or as a basis for the modification of the reference point. The paper gives an example of applying the proposed decision making while competing by three persons of different preferences.

Efficient optimization algorithms are of great importance in many scientific and engineering applications. This paper considers development of dedicated Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) based approach for solving large, non-linear, constrained optimization problems. The EA are precisely understood here as decimal-coded Genetic Algorithms consisting of three basic operators: selection, crossover and mutation, followed by several newly developed calculation speed-up techniques. Efficiency increase of the EA computations may be obtained in several ways, including simple concepts proposed here like: solution smoothing and balancing, a posteriori solution error analysis, non-standard use of distributed and parallel calculations, and step-by-step mesh refinement. Efficiency of the proposed techniques has been evaluated using several benchmark tests. These preliminary tests indicate significant speed-up of the large optimization processes involved. Considered are applications of the EA to the sample problem of residual stresses analysis in elastic-plastic bodies being under cyclic loadings, and to a wide class of problems resulting from the Physically Based Approximation (PBA) of experimental data.

Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) variants have become popular in recent years. The main idea of these adaptive PSO variants is that they adaptively change their search behavior during the optimization process based on information gathered during the run. Adaptive PSO variants have shown to be able to solve a wide range of difficult optimization problems efficiently and effectively. In this paper we propose a Repulsive Self-adaptive Acceleration PSO (RSAPSO) variant that adaptively optimizes the velocity weights of every particle at every iteration. The velocity weights include the acceleration constants as well as the inertia weight that are responsible for the balance between exploration and exploitation. Our proposed RSAPSO variant optimizes the velocity weights that are then used to search for the optimal solution of the problem (e.g., benchmark function). We compare RSAPSO to four known adaptive PSO variants (decreasing weight PSO, time-varying acceleration coefficients PSO, guaranteed convergence PSO, and attractive and repulsive PSO) on twenty benchmark problems. The results show that RSAPSO achives better results compared to the known PSO variants on difficult optimization problems that require large numbers of function evaluations.

The paper presents a method of supporting decision-making under risk by a risk- -averse decision-maker. Decision-making under risk occurs when the outcome of the system is ambiguous and depends on the state of the environment. The problem is considered as a multi-criteria optimization. The decision support method consists of interactive conduct of the process of decision-making. The decision is made by means of solving a problem with controlling parameters, which determine the aspirations of the decision-maker and evaluating the obtained solutions. The decision-maker sets parameters for which a solution is determined. Subsequently, he or she assesses the obtained solution, accepting or rejecting it. In the latter case, the decision-maker sets new values for the parameters and the problem is solved again. The present paper presents a discrete example of support for decision making under risk.

We consider the problem of steering a finite string to the zero state in finite time from a given initial state by controlling the state at one boundary point while the other boundary point moves. As a possible application we have in mind the optimal control of a mining elevator, where the length of the string changes during the transportation process. During the transportation process, oscillations of the elevator-cable can occur that can be damped in this way. We present an exact controllability result for Dirichlet boundary control at the fixed end of the string that states that there exist exact controls for which the oscillations vanish after finite time. For the result we assume that the movements are Lipschitz continuous with a Lipschitz constant, whose absolute value is smaller than the wave speed. In the result, we present the minimal time, for which exact controllability holds, this time depending on the movement of the boundary point. Our results are based upon travelling wave solutions. We present a representation of the set of successful controls that steer the system to rest after finite time as the solution set of two point-wise equalities. This allows for a transformation of the optimal control problem to a form where no partial differential equation appears. This representation enables interesting insights into the structure of the successful controls. For example, exact bang-bang controls can only exist if the initial state is a simple function and the initial velocity is zero.
