Opis:
Thick-walled cylinders are widely used in various engineering applications. In an optimal design of pressurized thick-walled cylinders, an increase in the allowable internal pressure can be achieved by an autofrettage process. In the paper, analysis is carried out to develop a procedure in which the autofrettage pressure is determined analytically. The obtained equivalent stress distribution is compared with those of the conventional solid wall and of several multi-layer vessels. The results of the analytical approach are verified by FEM modelling. Tensile tests have been carried out to determine the real mechanical properties of the material of the vessel and to create a material model. The presented example illustrates the advantages of the autofrettage technique.

Two single-item, deterministic, continuous, finite horizon inventory models having no shortage have been considered. A demand rate function, which is relatively general, for the item has been assumed. In the first model, units of the item do not deteriorate; while in the second units deteriorate in a constant fraction rate. Some optimality conditions are shown for the models. Based on these properties, single variable search methods have been described to obtain globally optimal solutions. Numerical experiments indicate that the methods yield acceptable solutions within small time and are suitable for practical applications.

The paper presents optimization of elements in a storage water heater construction. Two optimization criteria are taken into account: energy saving and minimum costs of materials, used in the construction of a water heater. The construction elements used in a heater have significant influence on the value of energy consumption. Basic construction elements of the storage water heater are shortly described. Fundamental physical and mechanical properties of selected materials used in a thermal insulation of the heaters are shown. The optimization task is delineated and an object of the optimization is also schematically presented. Additionally, the paper contains a mathematical model of the optimization and a range of decision variables. The Pareto-optimal solution points are calculated. These points decide on the values of five decision variables. When designing the storage water heater appliances, these optimization algorithms can be used to get the optimal material costs and energy saving. The paper is strictly focused on the cost of the materials used, not the cost of the heater manufacturing itself. Additional costs can be added by processing the considered material, for example polyurethane foam or by performing foamed polystyrene molders - properly to heater dimensions. The scale of additional costs surely depends on an output volume and technical capacities of a manufacturing plant - for example the size of machine park. Additional costs related to specific construction materials can be analyzed in other, individual consideration.

Opis:
The problem of the determination of response characteristics and quasi-optimal control for nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems by using a multi-criteria linearization technique is presented in this paper. This idea was first introduced in previous author's paper (Socha, 1999a) for a simple dynamic system. In this paper, it is extended, and detailed analysis is given for a nonlinear oscillator with Gaussian external excitations and for a few criteria of statistical linearization. The obtained results are illustrated by a numerical example for Duffing's oscillator.

In the paper, we study a linear-quadratic optimal control problem of Mayer type given by a fractional control system. First, we prove a theorem on the existence of a solution to such a problem. Next, using the local implicit function theorem, we derive a formula for the gradient of a cost functional under constraints given by a control system and prove a maximum principle in the case of a control constraint set. The formula for the gradient is used to implement the gradient methods for the problem under consideration.

We consider a communication network routing problem wherein a number of users need to efficiently transmit their throughput demand in the form of data packets (incurring less cost and less delay) through one or more links. Using the game theoretic perspective, we propose a dynamic model which ensures unhindered transmission of data even in the case where the capacity of the link is exceeded. The model incorporates a mechanism in which users are appropriately punished (with additional cost) when the total data to be transmitted exceeds the capacity of the link. The model has multiple Nash equilibrium points. To arrive at rational strategies, we introduce the concept of focal points and get what is termed focal Nash equilibrium (FNE) points for the model. We further introduce the concept of preferred focal Nash equilibrium (PFNE) points and find their relation with the Pareto optimal solution for the model.

Opis:
Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) variants have become popular in recent years. The main idea of these adaptive PSO variants is that they adaptively change their search behavior during the optimization process based on information gathered during the run. Adaptive PSO variants have shown to be able to solve a wide range of difficult optimization problems efficiently and effectively. In this paper we propose a Repulsive Self-adaptive Acceleration PSO (RSAPSO) variant that adaptively optimizes the velocity weights of every particle at every iteration. The velocity weights include the acceleration constants as well as the inertia weight that are responsible for the balance between exploration and exploitation. Our proposed RSAPSO variant optimizes the velocity weights that are then used to search for the optimal solution of the problem (e.g., benchmark function). We compare RSAPSO to four known adaptive PSO variants (decreasing weight PSO, time-varying acceleration coefficients PSO, guaranteed convergence PSO, and attractive and repulsive PSO) on twenty benchmark problems. The results show that RSAPSO achives better results compared to the known PSO variants on difficult optimization problems that require large numbers of function evaluations.

Background: This paper finds initial basic feasible solution and optimal solution to the transportation problem by using MAM's (Monalisha's Approximation Method). Methods: Using the concept of comparison of the transportation problem by other methods of solution, the paper introduces a very effective method in terms of cost and time for solving these problems. This paper extends transportation problem by using different method of obtaining both initial basic feasible solution and optimal solution simultaneously other than existing methods. Results and conclusions: It is presented a cost saving and less time consuming and accurate method for obtaining the best optimal solution of the transportation problem . With the problem assumptions, the optimal solution can still be theoretically solved using the existing methods. Finally, numerical examples and sensitivity analysis are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results, and to gain additional managerial insights.

We propose a new approach to the study of Nash equilibrium solutions to non-cooperative differential games. The original problem is embedded in a one-parameter family of differential games, where the parameter 0 ∈ [0,1] accounts for the strength of the second player. When 0 = 0, the second player adopts a myopic strategy and the game reduces to an optimal control problem for the first player. As 0 becomes strictly positive, Nash equilibrium solutions can be obtained by studying a bifurcation problem for the corresponding system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations.

For a shape optimization problem second derivatives are investigated, obtained by a special approach for the description of the boundary variation and the use of a potential ansatz for the state. The natural embedding of the problem in a Banach space allows the application of a standard differential calculus in order to get second derivatives by a straight forward "repetition of differentiation". Moreover, by using boundary value characerizations for more regular data, a complete boundary integral representation of the second derivative of the objective is possible. Basing on this, one easily obtains that the second derivative contains only normal components for stationary domains, i.e. for domains, satisfying the first order necessary condition for a free optimum. Moreover, the nature of the second derivative is discussed, which is helpful for the investigation of sufficient optimality conditions.

We consider the problem of steering a finite string to the zero state in finite time from a given initial state by controlling the state at one boundary point while the other boundary point moves. As a possible application we have in mind the optimal control of a mining elevator, where the length of the string changes during the transportation process. During the transportation process, oscillations of the elevator-cable can occur that can be damped in this way. We present an exact controllability result for Dirichlet boundary control at the fixed end of the string that states that there exist exact controls for which the oscillations vanish after finite time. For the result we assume that the movements are Lipschitz continuous with a Lipschitz constant, whose absolute value is smaller than the wave speed. In the result, we present the minimal time, for which exact controllability holds, this time depending on the movement of the boundary point. Our results are based upon travelling wave solutions. We present a representation of the set of successful controls that steer the system to rest after finite time as the solution set of two point-wise equalities. This allows for a transformation of the optimal control problem to a form where no partial differential equation appears. This representation enables interesting insights into the structure of the successful controls. For example, exact bang-bang controls can only exist if the initial state is a simple function and the initial velocity is zero.
