Purpose: This paper attempts to examine the concept of successful ageing (SA) from the perspectives of older adults. Methods: Data were gathered from 224 persons. The research used a categorized interview and a test as methods of data collection. In order to select the types of subjective definitions of SA, the method of cluster analysis was applied. Results: 5 types of definitions were distinguished: 1) Around 40% of older adults consider the biomedical model to be in line with their idea of good old age, but they also add new components that they consider more important. These are: Living in an environment of loving persons (Type 1 definitions), and Religiousness, Generativity, Relationships with others based on love (Type 4). 2) About 40% of the respondents’ present one-dimensional definitions, with one of the following factors: Family (Type 2), and Religiousness (Type 3). 3) Lack of a precise definition is more often demonstrated in people with low life satisfaction who have been experiencing difficult life situations in recent times. Conclusions: Understanding of SA depends on life satisfaction and the context related to the life situation. Three key words are essential for the definitions: family, activity, religion.

This study focused on investigating the relationship between leisure activity types selected by individuals aged 65 and older and their income. The target population included inhabitants of Mersin Province aged 65 and older. A purposive sample of 228 individuals was recruited to participate in the study. The questionnaire consisted of a demographic information form and the “Leisure participation scale”, including six different activity types for which the respondents were asked to determine the frequency of participation. The collected data were analysed for normality, and by applying the independent T-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). In order to discover the cause of the inter-group differences (e.g. education level), Fisher’s LSD test was used. Significance was set at 0.05. The respondents’ participation in cultural activities was found to be positively correlated with their income level. Individuals in the low income group preferred “volunteering activities”, while individuals in the high income group preferred “cultural activities such as watching TV, going to cinema, concerts, museums”. Individuals in the moderate income group usually opted for “hobbies and indoor activities such as painting, reading, playing musical instruments”. Elderly people with moderate incomes, who tend to prefer indoor activities, should be encouraged to engage in outdoor activities that are more beneficial for their mental, physiological and psychological health. This results of the study can be used as recommendations concerning leisure activity types for private elderly care centers, ministries responsible for the health of elderly people, local authorities and other institutions that plan leisure activities for this social group.

The ageing of the population will change many societies in unprecedented ways. The changing age composition does not only create a burden on existing income systems and health care systems, but also affects the geographical mobility of populations. The objective of this paper is to provide some first insights into the moving behaviour of older adults in the Netherlands. By using data of the Housing Research Netherlands (HRN) 2009 survey, it was possible to investigate whether or not later-life residential mobility is influenced by individual characteristics and housing attributes. The responses of migrants and non-migrants are compared by conducting several two-way-chi-square analyses. The results of these descriptive analyses demonstrate that migrants indeed differ from non-migrants and that these differences are mostly related to housing attributes.

Objectives: The aim of this review was to explain the literature about the association between physical activity and longevity. Methods: The search was carried out in all databases of Web of Science and in all years (1900-2020), until December 31, 2020. The search term was “physical activity longevity” and the search was restricted to title. The inclusion criteria for papers were: 1. Type: Original papers. 2. Language: English. 3. Sample: Human participants. 4. Measures: Longevity and physical activity. Findings: A total of 52 papers were found. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 15 papers of these 52 papers were included in this review. The 15 studies found that physical activity have a positive impact on longevity. Conclusions: Physical activity can extend longevity and delay mortality. Future studies should focus on explaining the influence of different types of physical activities on longevity and identifying potential mechanisms. Public health strategies should be implemented to increase the physical activity levels of the population.

Traditionally, the emotional attachment older adults have to their homes and the economic and health burden caused by residential moves have had a deterrent effect on mobility during old age. In spite of this static general trend, 20% of older Europeans change their residential location after the age of 65. Some studies point out that this percentage will increase in the coming decades along with the onset of baby-boom cohorts reaching older ages. The main objective of this article is to describe the residential mobility trends during old age in some European countries and identify the main features of those elderly that move after 65, using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).

In the late adulthood, people tend to feel younger than it is indicated by their real age. It has been shown that subjective age (psychological variable) is a better predictor of psychosocial functioning than an actual age (objective variable). The aim of this study was to address the question of whether a subjective sense of age is more important than chronological age in experiencing oneself in a bodily dimension in people in old age. A group of 194 seniors (including 111 women and 83 men) aged from 57 to 90 years has been examined using Beata Mirucka’s Battery of Tests To Examine Representation of Body Self. The results revealed that the majority of respondents felt on average 12 years younger compared to their chronological age. At the same time, the subjective age, as opposed to chronological age, proved to be a good predictor of the positive experience of the body self at the old age; experiencing oneself as a younger person remained closely related to the positive body image, body schema and body feeling.

Introduction. In effect of the ageing process, there are involutional changes in older adults both in the mental and in the physical spheres. Some factors may slow down the ageing process. Physical activity is one of these factors. Physical ability is one of the most important indicators of quality of life of older adults, and it can be shaped by physical activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess chosen factors that influence physical ability of adults older than 65 years. Material and methods. The study involved 63 older adults. The criterion for inclusion in the study was the age - older than 65 years. There were 37 women and 26 men in the study population. All the subjects were able to walk without assistance, and they had no contraindications to do functional tests. We used a questionnaire of our own design, three SPPB trials, Up&Go test; we calculated the BMI indices and assessed depression scale. Results. We found that older adults rarely engage in physical activity. The low level of physical activity of the older adults was reflected in equally low physical ability level, as assessed by functional tests. We found a directly proportional dependence between body mass and the level of functional limitations and risk of falls. Conclusion. In our functional tests, we found a statistically significant correlation with regard to age and BMI index.

Opis:
Objectives: The loss of strength of the plantar flexors of the ankle associated with aging may limit the performance of balance in the functional activities of daily life in older adults. The deficit of strength of this musculature and an inadequate dynamic balance have been correlated with an increased risk of falls in older adults. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to analyse the association between the strength of the plantar flexors and the dynamic balance in older women. Methods: A total of 79 older women, between the ages of 55 and 65, participated in the present study. Subjects participated in a systematic program of physical exercise in a private fitness center of the Region of Murcia during the year 2019. A cross-sectional correlational study was designed to correlate the dynamic balance, assessed with the Y-balance Test (YB) and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), with the strength of the ankle plantar flexors, assessed with the Calf-raise test (CR). A Wilcoxon test was carried out to evaluate the differences between the values of the dominant and non-dominant sides in the balance test Y-Balance test. A Spearman correlation analysis was applied to observe if the strength of the plantar flexors of the ankle was associated with the two tests of dynamic balance. Findings: A significant "small" correlation between the strength of the plantar flexors of the ankle and the postero-lateral dynamic balance "Y-Balance" (p = 0.023, r = 0.256) was found in the subjects of the present study. Conclusions: The main finding of the present study was that 55-65-year-old women need to train the strength of the plantar flexors of the ankle to improve the unipodal dynamic balance and minimize the possible risk of falling.

The purpose of the study was to examine whether older adults show an emotional interference effect in a Stroop task, and whether their RTs differ with regard to age, gender and tendencies of mood regulation (to improvement and/or deterioration). The sample consisted of 60 participants at the age from 65 to 85. Emotional version of Stroop task and the Mood Regulation Scales were used. The results showed no significant differences in RTs to emotional and neutral words. Unexpectedly, a speeding effect was observed with the age of women. It appeared also that the effect of mood regulation tendencies was not significant for RTs. The last two effects are not consistent with the literature on cognitive and emotional aging.

Opis:
Personal development throughout the course of life is at the core of several important policy documents that have shaped European cooperation in economic, social and educational sciences over the last decade. The paradigm of Lifelong Learning implies learning at any age of life and underlines the importance of achieving continuous knowledge and self-care. Pedagogy has started taking into account the age of older adults only in recent years. The European project we are going to illustrate sought to test how well peer to peer learning can be useful to define new training and learning models for older adults. The HiHtaST (Hand in Hand to a Social Tomorrow) project provides an example of peer to peer learning among older adults. We provided training for adult learners to teach IT among other older adults as a means for social inclusion in five European countries. Each country had 20 learners / trainers who had other older students in turn. Multiple choice questionnaires and focus groups were used to collect data. The project was run in the theoretical framework of active ageing, considering the paradigm of Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development and co-construction of knowledge. The project results showed that adults can acquire knowledge in peer to peer group situations with no drop-outs especially when learning real and practical tasks, which suggests that peer to peer learning works better than a frontal class in formal as well as non-formal or informal situations.

Opis:
It is known that rates of participation in sports and physical activities among older adults decrease as they get older. This article focuses on the experience of the aging body at the gym, and it is one of the few that focuses on a little-studied group of frequent gym-goers. Based on an ethnographic work of more than two years in Amsterdam, I explain the goals of three older adults who frequently work out, what their relationships with the gym and their bodies are, and why they are interested in training in gyms. This article seeks to contribute to discourses on health, sport, and aging and, at the same time, to explain some of the advantages of qualitative studies in understanding the experience of aging and training in gyms.

In recent years, demographical changes have posed a significant interest for social work. The primary aim of social work as a science and as a profession is to ensure the social participation of all people on all levels of society: micro, meso and macro. Social work is therefore connected not just with individuals and families, but also with communities and society as a whole. This paper presents how this characteristic of social work in homes for the older people infl uence on the transformation of Slovenian institutional care from primary residential care to centres of care for the older people. Th e signifi cant impact is in the diff erence of social work between socially and medically oriented homes. Th e diff erence lies in social work methods as well as in the roles of the social worker in different areas of work with the residents, relatives and staff . This approach enables the provision of holistic care for the older people in institutions and in the community. Slovenian homes for the older people with existing and planned forms of assistance in the community demonstrate that institutional care is not necessarily linked only to the classical care in an institution. The transformation of homes enables the development of new forms of care for older adults both inside and outside each home for the older people

Introduction and aim. Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional death in the world. The study was conducted to examine the risk of falls and levels of frailty in older adult patients admitted to the emergency department due to fractures, as well as to identify the factors that influence fall risk and frailty levels. Material and methods. This cross-sectional and correlational study conducted with 155 older patients. Data collected by the patient information form, Itaki Fall Risk Scale and Edmonton Frail Scale. Results. Patients diagnosed with fracture in the emergency department had a high risk of falling with a mean score of 9.55±3.84.70.3% of the patients were frail. The one-third (30.3%) had severe frailty. There was a moderate positive correlation between the risk of falling and the mean frailty score of the older adult patients (p<0.001). Conclusion. The study showed that older adults admitted to the emergency department due to falls are at high risk of falling and the majority of them are frail. Early determination of fall risk and frailty levels in the older adults with a history of falling, prevention of falls and fractures due to falls will be beneficial in increasing the quality of life of the older adults

Four types of self-standards (ideal, ought, undesired, and forbidden selves) were analyzed in the context of self-assessed health of older adults. We focused on the relationships between self-discrepancies (perceived actualization of self-standards) and affect, as well as the content of self-descriptions of standards. Participants (116 Polish older adults) completed: Self Standards’ Measure (SSM), PANAS-X and 7 items from the WHOQOL-BREF. First, we found that self-assessed health moderates the effects of self-discrepancies on affect. The ideal and ought self-discrepancies predicted affect when health was assessed as good. Conversely, the undesired and forbidden self-discrepancies predicted affect when health was assessed as poor. Second, health-related content was more typical for the ideal than for the ought standards. Third, older adults who assessed their health better had fewer health-related standards. The results are discussed with reference to control theory of approach and avoidance.

Objectives: To investigate associations between sexual intercourse and sleep quality and duration, controlling for a range of confounders, in a large, representative sample of older English adults. Methods: Data were from 2,743 men and 2,990 women aged ? 50 years, participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported whether or not they had engaged in sexual activity in the last year, and those who were sexually active reported frequency of intercourse in the past month. Information on sleep disturbance and duration and socio-demographic and health-related covariates was also collected. Findings: Being sexually active was not associated with sleep disturbance or sleep duration. Men who had less frequent intercourse reported greater sleep disturbance than those who reported no sexual intercourse (OR=1.29, 95% CI 1.02-1.65), but had lower odds of reporting longer than optimal sleep duration (OR=0.45, 95% CI 0.24-0.86). Men who engaged in sexual intercourse once a week or more (OR=0.43, 95% CI 0.23-0.80) also had lower odds of long sleep relative to those who reported no sexual intercourse. Women who engaged in more frequent (? once a week) intercourse reported less sleep disturbance than those who reported no sexual intercourse in the last month (OR=0.68, 95% CI 0.53-0.86), and women who reported sexual intercourse once in the past month had lower odds of long sleep (OR=0.51, 95% CI 0.26-0.996). Conclusions: In a population-based sample of older men and women in England, there was inconsistent evidence of an association between sexual activity and sleep disturbance and sleep duration.
