Old age is an ordinary phase of human life on Earth. It is time when one is reaping his or her lifetime harvest. It is also time when one’s fitness and agility decreases and often a disability appears. Senility is a moment of a human life fulfilment. It is kind of a “bridge” leading to eternity. It is inseparably connected with the problems of the suffering, the fading away and especially severe problem of the widowing. Age in the modern society is more and more important topic due to the fact that the society is getting older. The Catholic Church which wants to answer this “signs of the times” makes an required effort. In this article at the very begging was described the life situation of the aged people including the widowed people. Afterwards was characterized the ecclesial teaching about senility with a special emphasizing of the widowing problem. Subsequently was revealed actions which should be or are taken by the Church Ministry towards the old age people.

Opis:
The authors of a contribution in dealing with prejudice and negative images of older people and symptom discrimination against older person or a group of elders. We are talking about ageism thus, social prejudice against age. These are the statements and positions without a true foundation, but the appearance that they are at the core of truth. Some manifestations of discrimination are evident in some unspoken subtext. In practice, we often encounter ageism as age discrimination against individuals or groups of older people, for example, advertisements offering jobs. Generation 55+ is not only healthier than we think, but to live for a longer active life than previous generations, are far more involved in other activities than just gardening, fishing and baking cookies and cakes. Seniors begin also other careers, leading companies devoted to artistic activities, traveling, attending educational courses, schools and transmit their profession and experience to others. To give people a sense of well being and reinforce positive attitudes in society towards aging and older people is essential participation in social, economic, cultural and voluntary activities, responsible approach to their own life and interest in the development of society. The main ethical principles are respect for human uniqueness, while recognizing equality between people, respect for the dignity of the older person, and respect for its independence, the right to self-determination, the right to privacy and personal choice. It is important to promote, strengthen and protect the family as the basic cell of society, in which there is naturally intergenerational solidarity, and respect for the elderly. The program aims to create conditions for full and active life of seniors, eliminate the causes of the inadmissible restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms for reasons of age and social status, combat discrimination and social exclusion of the elderly, strengthening intergenerational solidarity, self-reliance, recognizing the contribution of seniors to family and society, promote understanding , tolerance and solidarity.

The problems of aging and old age is the subject of increasingly undertaken research and theoretical considerations. The aging population raises new challenges, sets more and more new areas of research. In the context of rapidly progressive changes, one of the major problems is loneliness and isolation. Older people experience it in a more poignant and specific way than people from other age groups. This study aims to bring this issue in terms of definitional, etiologic, relating to the consequences and prevention of solitude and loneliness.

This article is an image of old age issues presented by adolescents and people in late adulthood. The definition of image of old age is based on existing in today's society negative stereotypes. The study involved a representative sample of 385 people, including 179 adolescents and 206 seniors. It has been shown tendencies to a more negative, stereotypical perception of old age by adolescents. They pointed to more frequent and more satisfying growing up with grandparents contact /grandmothers as a factor shaping a more positive image of old age. In the group of seniors a more positive image of old age was associated with: female gender, a better education and health, the average economic conditions as well as involvement in organized forms of activity. The presented studies have educational and prophylactic value.

Nowadays aging and old age is quite popular in many fields also in mass media we can see pictures of older adults who might be named non-stereotypical. The aim of the paper is to present one of the non-stereotypical picture of old age – the oldest Polish DJ Wirginia Wika Szmyt. The article presents designed and conducted qualitative research – text analysis of collected data (many interviews, articles available online and in press about Wirginia Szmyt and biographical book DJ Wika. This is power!) and analysis of the narrations of focus group interviews of the seniors – students of U3A). The aim of the research was the analysis of the interesting aspects of the three complementary perspectives: the media, the senior and individual. The article presents the results of the first stage of the project carried out oscillating around issues of nonstereotypical perception, experiencing and imaging old age.
Wśród inspiracji, które przyczyniły się do powstania niniejszego artykułu było przekonanie, że starość „niejedno ma imię”, a precyzyjnie – że ma ona nie jeden, ale wiele wizerunków. Dostrzegana przez nas wieloznaczność, wielowymiarowość i wielokontekstowość starości stała się impulsem do podjęcia refleksji nad niestereotypowymi wizerunkami starości, wśród których za szczególnie interesujący poznawczo uznałyśmy wizerunek kreowany przez Wirginię Szmyt, znaną jako DJ Wika. Projekt „Być jak DJ Wika?”, którego zarys przedstawiony został w niniejszym artykule, jest efektem obserwacji wzrastającej popularności Wirginii Szmyt. To ona stała się impulsem do podjęcia przez nas refleksji nad „niestereotypowymi wizerunkami starości”. Celem wspomnianego projektu było dokonanie analizy wizerunku DJ Wiki w oparciu o trzy wzajemnie uzupełniające się perspektywy: medialną, senioralną, osobistą/indywidualną. Postawione przez nas pytania badawcze skłoniły nas do zaprojektowania i przeprowadzania procedury badań jakościowych, na podstawie jakościowej analizy treści wspartej zogniskowanymi badaniami fokusowymi i pisemnymi wypowiedziami seniorów biorących udział w projekcie. Jakościowa analiza zebranego materiału badawczego (medialne wypowiedzi Wirginii Szmyt opublikowane w postaci wywiadów w internecie, prasie, książce, dwóch zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych (focus group interviews) przeprowadzonych wśród seniorów UTW w UWr oraz pisemne wypowiedzi uczestników projektu) doprowadziła do wielu interesujących wniosków, które zostały przedstawione w niniejszym artykule.

Among many demographic changes, one of the most evident now is the aging of the population, the consequences of which are increasingly leaving a mark on the directions of social policy. In connection with the aging of the population and positive aspects, manifestations of ageism, based on stereotypes and negative attitudes toward older people, are also more and more noticeable. Sometimes, these are discriminatory practices against older people encountered in the health sector, the labor market, public offices, and others. The research presented in the article aimed to identify age discrimination and its manifestations among older people. The purposive sampling technique was used to choose the research sample – the assumption was to examine active older people related to a large city who get involved and participate in various activities and projects carried out for them by nongovernmental organizations. The method of a diagnostic survey with a questionnaire, which included both closed and open-ended questions, was used in the research. The research was intended to help answer the following questions: do older people notice age discrimination, and have they experienced worse treatment because of their age? How many of the surveyed seniors experienced worse treatment and what forms (most often) did it take, and where did it happen?

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę samotności i osamotnienia, które są postrzegane przede wszystkim jako stany negatywne, i dla osób je przeżywających niosą różne nieprzyjemne konsekwencje łącznie z depresją. Samotność w sposób szczególny doskwiera osobom w podeszłym wieku, gdy kończą aktywność zawodową, gdy zmniejsza się ich sieć towarzyska, gdy umierają najbliżsi. W niniejszym opracowaniu zwrócono uwagę na zamienne stosowanie w literaturze przedmiotu i języku potocznym pojęcia samotność i osamotnienie, takie stanowisko przyjęły również autorki. Zauważono ponadto tendencję do unikania jednoznacznego definiowania pojęcia „człowiek stary”, stosując w zamian określenia typu: senior, seniorzy, lub osoby trzeciego, czwartego wieku, późnego wieku. Następnie odwołano się do przyczyn samotności seniorów, zwracając szczególną uwagę na rolę i znaczenie rodziny jako czynnika zmniejszającego ryzyko odczuwanej samotności. W artykule poruszono również zagadnienie profesjonalnej opieki i wyzwań przed nią stojących.
The article focuses on the issues of loneliness and isolation, which are seen primarily as negative states, and carry various unpleasant consequences for those experiencing them, including depression. Loneliness afflicts the elderly in a special way, when they end their professional activity, when their social network decreases, when their loved ones die. This study draws attention to the interchangeability of the notion of loneliness and isolation in the literature of the subject as well as in everyday language, which position is also shared by the authors. There was also a tendency to avoid unambiguous definition of the term “old man”, using instead the terms of the type: senior, seniors, or people of the third, fourth and late age. Then, the reasons for loneliness of seniors were briefly addressed, paying special attention to the role and importance of the family as a factor reducing the risk of loneliness. The article also discusses the issue of professional care and the challenges facing it.

Old age as a natural wave of life following youth and maturity, culminates in the dynamic process of aging of people. Called the final stage of life, it is usually equated with the decline of the body’s efficiency, loss of mobility, weakened strength, reduced ability to adapt to any changes, loneliness, the necessity to use the help of others and sometimes even functioning on the margins of social life. Such an image of old age seems to be not very optimistic, the more so despite the inevitable process of aging, people of this age can also be very active in the social space and present a friendly image of old age. This article is an attempt to show how maturity youth perceive older people in their living environment. For this purpose, a short outline of the theoretical basis on old age is described, a methodological note and an analysis of the conducted research were presented, taking into account the conclusions set at the end of this article.
Starość jako naturalna fala życia następująca po młodości i dojrzałości wieńczy dynamiczny proces starzenia się osób. Nazywana końcowym etapem życia, zwykle utożsamiana jest ze spadkiem wydolności organizmu, utratą mobilności, osłabieniem sił, ograniczeniem zdolności przystosowania się do wszelkich zmian, samotnością, koniecznością korzystania z pomocy innych, a czasem nawet funkcjonowaniem na marginesie życia społecznego. Taki obraz starości wydaje się mało optymistyczny, tym bardziej że mimo nieuchronnego procesu starości osoby w tym wieku potrafią być również bardzo aktywne w przestrzeni społecznej i prezentować przyjazny obraz spokojnej starości. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą ukazania, w jaki sposób młodzież maturalna postrzega osoby starsze w środowisku swojego zamieszkania. W tym celu opisano krótki zarys teoretycznych podstaw o starości, przedstawiono notę metodologiczną oraz analizę przeprowadzonych badań z uwzględnieniem wniosków zamieszczonych w zakończeniu niniejszego artykułu.

Artykuł charakteryzuje aktywność i aktywizację seniorów oraz personalistyczny wymiar tej aktywności, ukazuje także aktywność fizyczną jako sposób budowania relacji międzyludzkich. Mając na uwadze jedność psycho-fizyczno-duchową człowieka, proponuje się spojrzenie na aktywność fizyczną seniorów z perspektywy filozofii personalistycznej, by z niej czerpać inspiracje do aktywizacji starszego pokolenia. Aktywne starzenie się jest związane głównie z obszarami aktywności zawodowej i społecznej oraz szeroko rozumianą jakością życia opartą na dobrym zdrowiu. Pojęcie „aktywne starzenie się” coraz częściej zastępuje „pomyślna starość”. Niepodważalny element tej drugiej stanowi aktywność, której forma fizyczna jest warunkiem funkcjonowania w świecie. W okresie starości powinna być ona traktowana jako konieczność i potrzeba na drodze spokojnego, szczęśliwego i zdrowego życia.
The article outlines the characteristics of activity and activation of senior citizens and highlights the personalistic dimension of this activity. It shows how physical activity can be used in building interpersonal relationships. Bearing in mind that each human being represents a physical, psychological and spiritual unity, it is suggested that the physical activity of senior citizens be approached from the perspective of personalistic philosophy as a source of inspiration for the activation of the elderly. Active ageing is mainly related to the areas of professional and social activity and a broadly defined quality of life based on good health and well-being. The term “active ageing” is increasingly being replaced by “successful ageing.” An indisputable element of the latter is staying active, with physical activity being a prerequisite for the overall functioning in the world. In old age, physical activity should be regarded as a necessity and a need for a peaceful, happy and healthy life.

Music as a form of idea transmission and interpersonal communi-cation (mainly due its capability to reveal one’s emotions) is used successfully during the occupational therapy with seniors staying in institutions of support and care. The most often these are occupational therapy workshops and nursing homes. Furthermore, this form of therapy is used informally in other institu-tions, such as the universities of the third age or senior clubs. It can either take the passive form – listening to music, but also the active – practicing music (for example: singing, composing). Music improves mental state, but it also affects human physical state. Firstly, music prevents; secondly, it rehabilitates; thirdly, it corrects and fourthly, it cures.
Muzyka jako jedna z form przekazu i komunikacji międzyludzkiej (głównie za sprawą ujawnienia emocji danego człowieka) jest wykorzystywana z powodzeniem w czasie terapii zajęciowej z seniorami przebywającymi w pla-cówkach wsparcia i opieki. Najczęściej są to warsztaty terapii zajęciowej oraz domy pomocy społecznej. Ta forma terapii stosowana jest nieformalnie w innych placówkach, takich jak uniwersytety trzeciego wieku, kluby seniora. Przybiera ona postać bierną – słuchanie muzyki, ale także czynną – uprawianie muzyki (np. śpiew, komponowanie). Muzyka poprawia stan psychiczny człowieka, ale ma również wpływ na jego fizykalność. Po pierwsze zapobiega, po drugie usprawnia, po trzecie koryguje, a po czwarte leczy.

W obliczu interdyscyplinarnej dyskusji dotyczącej tematyki starości warto spojrzeć na to zagadnienie i związane z nim procesy również z punktu widzenia turystyki. Celem opracowania jest więc wskazanie relacji między aktywnością osób starszych a turystyką seniorów. Fundament stanowi konceptualizacja kluczowych pojęć – starzenia i starości. Omówiono również cechy turystyki seniorów, odnosząc się także do samego procesu aktywności turystycznej w kontekście osób starszych. Rozważania teoretyczne rozszerzają spojrzenie praktyczne, przywołano bowiem wyniki badań empirycznych, prowadzonych przy zastosowaniu kwestionariusza ankiety wśród turystów seniorów w latach 2014-2015 w Poznaniu, Łodzi i Warszawie.
In the face of interdisciplinary discussion concerning the issue of old age, it is worthwhile to look at this issue and the processes related thereto also from the point of view of tourism. Therefore, an aim of the study is to indicate the relationships between activity of elderly people and their tourism. The foundation is conceptualisation of the key notions: ageing and old age. There are also discussed the features of elderly people’s tourism, referring also to the very process of tourist activity in the context of elderly people. The author’s theoretical considerations extend the practical look as there are referred findings of empirical research carried out with the use of a questionnaire of survey among elder tourists in the years 2014-2015 in Poznan, Lodz, and Warsaw.

Celem artykułu jest odniesienie rozważań o starości Jana Pawła II do aktualnych tendencji w gerontologii społecznej. Zmaganie się Jana Pawła II z własną chorobą, cierpieniem i wiekiem solidaryzuje papieża z ludźmi niedołężnymi, starymi, ubogimi, którzy znoszą swoje troski i udręki ciała każdego dnia. Tym samym zwraca się do lekarzy, polityków, duszpasterzy, jaki i samych wiernych w celu zabezpieczenia godnego życia seniorom, łagodzenia bólu, wsparcia w cierpieniu. W swoich wypowiedziach podejmuje problemy ludzi w podeszłym wieku w wymiarze indywidualnym i ogólnoświatowym. Przedstawiona perspektywa przyczyna się z jednej strony do podejmowania działań na rzecz grupy osób w podeszłym wieku a z drugiej do sprecyzowania problemów związanych z jej wzrostem. W nauczaniu Jana Pawła II występują zagadnienia związane ze starzeniem się społeczeństwa na świecie w obydwu sformułowanych obszarach.
The aim of the article is to consider John Paul II’s teachings on the old age in the light of current trends in the domain of social gerontology. John Paul II’s struggle with his own illness, pain and old age made him the symbol of all the frail, the old and the poor suffering physical pain and every day anxiety. This way, he addresses doctors, politicians, clergymen, and the faithful themselves to take care that senior citizens live their lives in dignity, to alleviate their pain and to support them in their trials and suffering. The Pope considers problems of elderly people individually and in the global perspective which, on the one hand, encourages undertakings aimed at helping the old, on the other, promotes efforts to identify and determine problems following from the fact of the growing number of old people within the society. The teachings of Pope John Paul II include both kinds of the mentioned issues concerning the ageing society of the world.

Starzejące się społeczeństwa krajów wysokorozwiniętych stanowią dla polityk państwowych nie lada wyzwanie. Jednocześnie, przy spadającej liczbie urodzeń wzrosło zagrożenie ujemnego przyrostu naturalnego. Pojawiają się trudności braku siły roboczej na rynku pracy. Te i inne wskaźniki pozwalają stwierdzić, iż społeczeństwo będzie potrzebowało swoich seniorów w przestrzeni publicznej. Wydłużający się wiek życia zmienia sposób postrzegania osób starszych jako niezastąpiony rezerwuar zasobów doświadczonych fachowców. Nakłada to na społeczeństwo obowiązek prowadzenia działań promocyjnych w kierunku polityki rodzinnej, w tym senioralnej. Jednocześnie same osoby starsze potrzebują, dostosowanej do ich potrzeb, przestrzeni permanentnej edukacji. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia sytuację osób starszych, zwłaszcza ich możliwości w przestrzeni aktywności edukacyjnej w sytuacji przejścia na emeryturę. Próbuje pokazać, w jaki sposób wymóg edukacji nieformalnej i pozaformalnej staje się obowiązkiem, a jak dalece jest postrzegany przez osoby starsze jako przymus zewnętrzny.
The ageing population of developed countries poses a challenge to State policy. At the same time, decreasing number of births increased the risk of negative natural growth. There is a shortage of manpower in the labour market. These and other indicators allow us to state that society will need its seniors in the public space. An extended life expectancy changes the perception of elderly people as an irreplaceable reservoir of resources of experienced professionals. This imposes a public obligation to conduct promotional activities in the direction of family policy, including elderly people. At the same time, elderly people themselves need a permanent education space adapted to their needs. This article presents the situation of elderly people, especially their opportunities in the area of educational activity in the situation of retirement. It tries to show how the requirement of informal and non-formal education becomes an obligation, and how much it is perceived by elderly people as external coercion.

Współczesnym problemem społecznym jest proces starzenia się społeczeństwa i wzrastająca populacja osób starszych. Konsekwencje tych zjawisk mają charakter jednostkowy i społeczny. Wyznaczają obraz społeczeństwa polskiego (malejąca liczba ludności, malejąca dzietność, wzrost liczby osób starszych i sędziwych, malejąca liczba dzieci, młodzieży i osób w wieku produkcyjnym). Stanowią wyzwanie z jednej strony dla rządu – jak organizować pomoc i opiekę seniorom, z drugiej zaś dla samych seniorów i ich rodzin – jak podnosić jakość ich życia. W artykule omówiono proces starzenia się społeczeństwa, przedstawiono portret polskiego seniora oraz wskazano działania polityki rodzinnej w zakresie pomocy i aktywizacji osób starszych.
Contemporary social problems include the aging process and the growing elderly population. The consequences of these phenomena are individual and social in nature. They define the image of Polish society (decreasing population, decreasing fertility rates, the increasing number of elderly people, the decreasing number of children, adolescents and people of working age). They present a challenge on the one hand to the government – how to organize help and care for seniors – and, on the other hand, to the seniors themselves and their families – how to improve the quality of their lives. The article discusses the aging process of the society, a description of a Polish senior citizen, and a family policy actions aiming at supporting and activation of the elderly.
