Opis:
Ernest Renan’s Vie de Jésus [Life of Jesus] was an extraordinary scandal, a literary event. The book is often compared to Victor Hugo’s Misérables [The Wretched], one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Renan’s work seeks to be scientific, but it is frequently considered to be a masterpiece of literature: Renan uses (and abuses) images, poetic imagination, aesthetic reflections, sensitive handwriting… What if the Life of Jesus was really a novel?

The paper focuses upon the latest adult romance novels that appeared after Fifty Shades of Grey, anal-yses their stylistic dimensions and argues with the essay Hard-Core Romance by Eva Illouz. At first the genre is defined, above all on the basis of its medial presence (chapter 1. Genre). Furthermore tempera-ture metaphors in two representative texts of the genre (E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey and Sylvia Day Bared to You) are analyzed as stylistic (chapter 2. Conventional Temperature Metaphors) as well as rhetorical artifacts (chapter 3. Rhetoric of Metaphor). In conclusion the question of language in the novels and its usefulness in the task described by Illouz is raised (chapter 4. A New Love Order?). The new adult romance novel seems to be a conventional cultural text of little rhetorical power, thus unable to carry important social ideas.

Viktar Martsinovich’s novels reveal the aesthetic searches conducted in modern Belarusian literature. In the work “Sphagnum” the classical form of the social novel is originally reproduced, where various representatives of the society are convincingly shown in colorful images-types. The novels “Lake of Joy” and “Revolution” reveal first of all the psychological reflection of main characters, who act as symbolic incarnations of the spiritual aspirations of our time. Novels with assessments of psychological anti-utopia “Language” and “Night” represent the author’s prediction of the loss of national identity and spiritual literary tradition.

The main aim of the article is to survey the situation in the field of Lithuanian literature of the first two decades of the 21st century discussing the phenomenon of the diffusion of genres. The main questions to be answered: how a genre could be related to the forms of writing and in what way can particular blends of literary genres justify expectations of a reader and give additional impulses to the emotional response of the addressee of the text. Those questions will be answered analysing prose texts by contemporary Lithuanian writers Aušra Matulevičiūtė (1978), Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė (1976), Renata Šerelytė (1970) and Rasa Aškinytė (1973). It is possible to conclude that particular blends of literary genres may realize the intentions of a writer and give additional impulses to the emotional response of an addressee of fictional text, but those blends should be constructed paying attention to the particular forms of writing.

Opis:
Under Jewish law, the witnessing of Jesus as resurrected must occur by the third-day after death. Later witnessing can be corroborative, but the third-day witnessing is crucial. In Matthew and John, the sole percipient witnesses on the third-day are women, plural in Matthew, a single woman in John. This seems to cast doubt on Jesus’ resurrection because in Greek, Roman, and Jewish culture, women were ineligible as witnesses or were considered vastly inferior as witnesses to men. Celsus inveighed, “Who saw this? A hysterical female!” Communicating to outsiders, having women witness casts aspersions on Jesus’ resurrection making Christianity appear unthreatening to the imperial order. However, for Jews aware of the celebrated exception in the Pharisaic/rabbinic oral law/tradition that accepted women’s testimony in the circumstances found in the gospels, having specifically women witness makes their testimony more credible than had the witnesses been men or any combination of men and women. Women witnessing the risen Lord fits within the interstices of the Law, so that, not just human testimony, but the Law lends its imprimatur endorsing Jesus.

Polish and German perspective in genre studies
Opis:
Drawing from both German and Polish linguistic and literary perspectives, the article attempts to examine genre changes within the genre pattern of the novel and decide whether Olga Tokarczuk’s Flights, described by the author herself as a novel, should be attributed to this genre. We assume that linguistic and literary tools will allow us to determine the most characteristic features of contemporary novel productions to decide on the nature of changes taking place within the studied genre. Looking at Tokarczuk’s work not through the prism of a single genre but, following Maria Wojtak, Kirsten Adamzik or Ulla Fix, from the perspective of inter-genre relations, allows not only to conclude that the analyzed material is located on the fringes of the genre pattern of the novel but also to see other inter-textual dependencies and consider the text under study as a genre in the form of a collection.

The following article construes the novel as a genre and explores how the innovations of utilizing multiple semiotic resources and media platforms are transforming it these days. With Marisha Pessl’s Night Film (2013) as the primary example I look into the properties of the multimodal and multimedia novel with a view to presenting various ways of transgressing the parameters of the traditional (monomodal and mono-medial) novel. Drawing from L. Elleström’s theory of “modalities of media” I seek to go to the depth of the semiotic and semantic mechanisms of Night Film and argue how the integration of the verbal and the visual renders a new reading experience. Also, on the basis of J.P. Bolter and R. Grusin’s idea of hypermedia I claim that the multiplication of sign systems and media aims at enhancing the ontological illusion.

Writers explore the past and the present of their characters in moral and social conditions, emphasize national content of philosophical context.

Camus complements his novels with long peritexts, thus using his ecclesiastic authority to legitimise their moral and didactic value. In these peritexts he juxtapposes the licentious novels with his own devout works of fiction, which are, in his own words, not only valuable and worth recommending, but also capable of saving the readers’ souls, put in danger by other texts. In any case, a close reading of these peritexts reveals a view which challenges the idea of the novel’s insidiousness and which bears witness to Camus’s great fascination with this officially condemned literary genre.

This article seeks to examine the contemporary crime novel by looking at genre reflexivity in Gaja Grzegorzewska’s novel Stony Night (Kamienna noc). Taking the traditional genre and the work of Agatha Christie as reference points, this article identifies commonalities and divergences between Grzegorzewska’s novel and the traditionally oriented detective novel. The article analyzes fundamental issues of the detective novel, such as: plot, narration, composition, and the employment of conventions to reference the genre tradition along with Grzegorzewska’s experimentation, which is supported by intertextuality – a mode that is becoming increasingly relevant to the Polish variant of this genre.
