The paper deals with problems of chloride ion microconcentration measurements. It extends the previously made achievements [1, 5, 8] and proposes a nonlinear solution for more precise measurements. There are various chloride ion measurement methods, the most common of which is the potentiometric one using ion-selective electrodes (ISE). The other, much simpler and cheaper, is amperostatic coulometric titration with current source supplied detection electrodes (Figs. 1 and 2). It is based mainly on the Faraday principles (1) and Nernst equation. The main problem connected with chloride ion concentration measurement, is accurate determination of the titration end-point. The METHODS presented in [1] are not efficient for low measurement ranges, since the unknown titration process initial conditions affect the measurement result. That is why a nonlinear state estimation algorithm (Fig. 5) is proposed. Due to complex titration curve equations (2) some simplifications have been made (4). The proposed algorithm is capable of detecting unknown signals, so even a simplified system model should be sufficient. The proposed second derivative estimator combined with the titration curve intersection point detection algorithm makes it possible to take measurements with better repeatability and lower detection limit compared with methods presented in [1]. The further research should be aimed at the algorithm optimisation and implementation to a real measurement system in order to construct and realise a prototype of the chloride ion concentration meter.

Opis:
In this paper, the Hamiltonian approach is extended for solving vibrations of nonlinear conservative oscillators with general initial conditions. Based on the assumption that the derivative of Hamiltonian is zero, the frequency as a function of the amplitude of vibration and initial velocity is determined. A method for error estimation is developed and the accuracy of the approximate solution is treated. The procedure is based on the ratio between the average residual function and the total energy of the system. Two computational algorithms are described for determining the frequency and the average relative error. The extended Hamiltonian approach presented in this paper is applied for two types of examples: Duffing equation and a pure nonlinear conservative oscillator.

Selected econometric methods of modelling the world’s population size based on historical data are presented in the paper. Periodical variables were used in the models proposed in the paper. Moreover, a logistic-type function was used in modelling. The purpose of the paper was to obtain a model describing the world’s population with the lowest possible maximal relative error and possibly the longest period of durability. In this work, 13,244 models from three families models were analyzed. Only a small part of such a large number of models satisfies the conditions of stability. The method of modelling the world’s population size allows to obtain models with maximal relative errors not exceeding 0.5%. Selected models were used to prediction of the world’s population up to 2050. The obtained results were compared with data published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The problem of sequential fixed-precision estimation of the minimum point of a quadratic regression function is investigated. Stochastic approximation methods are mentioned. One presents also some sequential fixed-precision procedures for the minimum of a random variable, i.e. for the lower bound of the support of its distribution function. One attempts to apply these procedures to estimation of the minimal value of a regression function. Asymptotically consistent fixed-precision estimation is considered.

This paper presents a novel strategy of particle filtering for state estimation based on Generalized Gaussian distributions (GGDs). The proposed strategy is implemented with the Gaussian particle pilter (GPF), which has been proved to be a powerful approach for state estimation of nonlinear systems with high accuracy and low computational cost. In our investigations, the distribution which gives the complete statistical characterization of the given data is obtained by exponent parameter estimation for GGDs, which has been solved by many methods. Based on GGDs, an extension of GPF is proposed and the simulation results show that the extension of GPF has higher estimation accuracy and nearly equal computational cost compared with the GPF which is based on Gaussian distribution assumption.

In this paper, adaptive control for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with input constraints is addressed. The main goal is to achieve a self-regulator PID controller whose coefficients are adjusted by using some adaptive fuzzy rules. The constraints on the control signal are taken into account as a saturation operator. The stability of the closed-loop system is analytically proved by using the Lyapunov stability theorem. The proposed method is then applied to a surface vessel with uncertain dynamic equations. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

The paper shortly presents shock absorber design evolution and resulting achieved characteristics. The way in which suspension performance is evaluated is described giving information about models used for suspension parameter tuning during simulation testing of suspension transmissibility (FRF - Frequency Response Function) for most important suspension assessment criteria. More detailed information about models of shock absorber (damper) nonlinearities of characteristics allows for description of methods of linear and nonlinear suspension models FRF estimation. Testing linear suspension model is possible with the use of analytical transfer function formulas which were used to verify methods for estimation FRF using estimated power spectral density functions of excitation and response signals. Designing appropriate input signal allowing to get useful response signals was necessary to for the success of this research. Proposed FRF estimation method was used for linear estimation of nonlinear suspension for a given range of working condition. It was demonstrated that there is no single value of a damping coefficient which would make the linear model responses similar to the responses of the nonlinear one. Then the bilinear model was proposed, giving good damper static nonlinear characteristic.

Opis:
Offset-free model predictive control (MPC) algorithms for nonlinear state-space process models, with modeling errors and under asymptotically constant external disturbances, is the subject of the paper. The main result of the paper is the presentation of a novel technique based on constant state disturbance prediction. It was introduced originally by the author for linear state-space models and is generalized to the nonlinear case in the paper. First the case with measured state is considered, in this case the technique allows to avoid disturbance estimation at all. For the cases with process outputs measured only and thus the necessity of state estimation, the technique allows the process state estimation only - as opposed to conventional approach of extended process-and-disturbance state estimation. This leads to simpler design with state observer/filter of lower order and, moreover, without the need of a decision of disturbance placement in the model (under certain restrictions), as in the conventional approach. A theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm is provided, under applicability conditions which are weaker than in the conventional approach. The presented theory is illustrated by simulation results of nonlinear processes, showing competitiveness of the proposed algorithms.

The network calculus provides a theoretical background for description of traffic in computer networks. Using this tool in explanation of the so-called pathchirp method of measuring the available bandwidth, the validity and range of application of some relationships exploited are verified in this paper. The derivations are carried out in a wider context than that considered in a recent paper by Liebeherr et al. published in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking on network bandwidth estimation, providing thereby new insights and outcomes. These results, summarized in a table, show a means of bounding the service curve, depending upon its convexity or non-convexity property assumed and upon the linearity or non-linearity of a network considered. Moreover, it is shown here that the nonlinear network example analyzed by Liebeherr et al. can be viewed equivalently as a linear parametric network. For this network, the behaviour of the cross traffic is considered in a more detail, too.

In order to effectively monitor the wear and predict the life of cylinder liner, a nonlinear degradation model with multi-source uncertainty based on Wiener process is established to evaluate the remaining useful life (RUL) of cylinder liner wear. Due to complex service performance of cylinder liner, the uncertainty of operational environment and working conditions of cylinder liner wear are considered into the model by a random function. The probability density function (PDF) formula of RUL is derived, and the maximum likelihood estimation method is adopted to estimate the unknown parameters of PDF. Considering the evaluated parameters as the initial values, the model parameters are updated adaptively, and an adaptive PDF is obtained. Furthermore, the proposed model is compared with two classical degradation models. The results show that the proposed model has a good performance for predicting the life, and the error is within 5%. The method can provide a reference for condition monitoring of cylinder liner wear.

The aim of this paper is numerical estimation of pharmacokinetic parameters of the ligands of the macrophage mannose receptor, without knowing a priori the values of these parameters. However, it first requires a model identifiability analysis, which is done by applying an algorithm implemented in a symbolic computation language. It is shown that this step can lead to a direct numerical estimation algorithm. In this way, a first estimate is computed from noisy simulated observations without a priori parameter values. Then the resulting parameter estimate is improved by using the classical least-squares method.

Fault input channels represent a major challenge for observer design for fault estimation. Most works in this field assume that faults enter in such a way that the transfer functions between these faults and a number of measured outputs are strictly positive real (SPR), that is, the observer matching condition is satisfied. This paper presents a systematic approach to adaptive observer design for joint estimation of the state and faults when the SPR requirement is not verified. The proposed method deals with a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems subjected to piecewise constant multiplicative faults. The novelty of the proposed approach is that it uses a rank condition similar to the observer matching condition to construct the adaptation law used to obtain fault estimates. The problem of finding the adaptive observer matrices is formulated as a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) optimization problem. The proposed scheme is tested on the nonlinear model of a single link flexible joint robot system.

This paper addresses the issue of data-driven smoothing parameter (bandwidth) selection in the context of nonparametric system identification of dynamic systems. In particular, we examine the identification problem of the block-oriented Hammerstein cascade system. A class of kernel-type Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN) is employed as the identification algorithm. The statistical accuracy of the kernel GRNN estimate is critically influenced by the choice of the bandwidth. Given the need of data-driven bandwidth specification we propose several automatic selection methods that are compared by means of simulation studies. Our experiments reveal that the method referred to as the partitioned cross-validation algorithm can be recommended as the practical procedure for the bandwidth choice for the kernel GRNN estimate in terms of its statistical accuracy and implementation aspects.

Nonlinear dynamic processes with time-varying time delays can often be encountered in industry. Time-delay estimation for nonlinear dynamic systems with time-varying time delays is an important issue for system identification. In order to estimate the dynamics of a process, a dynamic neural network with an external recurrent structure is applied in the modeling procedure. In the case where a delay is time varying, a useful way is to develop on-line time-delay estimation mechanisms to track the time-delay variation. In this paper, two schemes called direct and indirect time-delay estimators are proposed. The indirect time-delay estimator considers the procedure of time-delay estimation as a nonlinear programming problem. On the other hand, the direct time-delay estimation scheme applies a neural network to construct a time-delay estimator to track the time-varying time-delay. Finally, a numerical example is considered for testing the proposed methods.

Opis:
A new two-stage approach to the identification of polynomial Wiener systems is proposed. It is assumed that the linear dynamic system is described by a transfer function model, the memoryless nonlinear element is invertible and the inverse nonlinear function is a polynomial. Based on these assumptions and by introducing a new extended parametrization, the Wiener model is transformed into a linear-in-parameters form. In Stage I, parameters of the transformed Wiener model are estimated using the least squares (LS) and instrumental variables (IV) methods. Although the obtained parameter estimates are consistent, the number of parameters of the transformed Wiener model is much greater than that of the original one. Moreover, there is no unique relationship between parameters of the inverse nonlinear function and those of the transformed Wiener model. In Stage II, based on the assumption that the linear dynamic model is already known, parameters of the inverse nonlinear function are estimated uniquely using the IV method. In this way, not only is the parameter redundancy removed but also the parameter estimation accuracy is increased. A numerical example is included to demonstrate the practical effectiveness of the proposed approach.
