    Culturemes and Non-Equivalent Lexis in DictionariesThe article raises the question of the need to improve the structural diversity and operational capabilities of the modern dictionary (bi- or multilingual) to avoid lacunes in the transmission of culturemes and non-equivalent words into another language. Without it the dictionary is incomplete and languages are unequal. The article deals with various options of asymmetry reflection of the culturemes in the context of social and ethno-psychic reality of a native-speaking community. The specifics of lexicographical transmission is observed in order to emphasize the need of further investigation of the linguistic map of the world.

    Opis:
    The article discusses the role that the means of formation of new lexical units by affixation in Russian, Bulgarian and Greek play in the appearance of “blank spaces” in the vocabulary of these three languages. The main methods of word formation in all three languages are almost identical, but there are peculiarities, which result in the presence of non-equivalent lexis in one of the languages in relation to the other two. Analyzing the means of formation of new lexical units by affixation in the three languages reveals two main reasons for the existence of lexical gaps in the compared languages, namely the different productivity and frequency of use of corresponding affixation models, and secondly the absence in one of the languages of similar in meaning and usage affixes carrying specific meaning.

    This article deals with the current state of development of two main categories of modern translation theory: “untranslatability” and “non-equivalence”. Untranslatability belongs to translation-theoretic universals and is a binary category. The essence of the phenomenon, its nature, as well as such concepts as “translation losses”, “untranslatable units”, “translatological classification of text types” are considered. The differences in the meaning of the concepts “untranslatability” and “non-equivalence” are described. The article objective is to show actuality and pecularity of their manifestation in the context of the Russian and German languages.

    Present article demonstrates analysis results of ways of presenting non-equivalent phrases in the „Podręczny idiomatykon polsko-rosyjski, z. 8” by Wojciech Chlebda. The author discusses the po-ssibility of modification and further improvement of some dictionary entries and also the usage of Ø symbol in other dictionaries. The analysis conducted by the author of the present article shows that Ø symbol is used in present dictionary in three cases: literal translation of the original unit with the recom-mended use of such phrases as «какговорятвПольше», «какгласитпольскаяпоговорка», for in-stance, kto “wygląda jak pączek w maśle” Ø [ктовыглядиткакпончиквмасле]; replacing the equiva-lent with some sort of definition, for instance, becikowe pot. Ø [одноразовоепособиедляноворождённого]; transcribing the initial unit and explaining its meaning in post-text comment, for in-stance, “szmalcownik” Ø [шмальцовник]. Result of the analysis allows us to conclude that Ø symbol must be considered as ‘needed’ in translated lexicography. On the other hand, its practical usage in a present dictionary prompts some doubts. Thus, in some cases literal translation can be used as equivalent, for instance, “urlop ojcowski отцовскийотпуск”. Apart from this, it appears to the author of the article that for approximately 10 initial units there are Russian translation equivalents, for instance, “biuro ka-rier“ [na uczelni] ros. “Центрразвитиякарьеры“/ “Центркарьеры“ or “damski bokser“ “кухонныйбоксёр“/ “кухонныйбоец/ кухонныйвоин“.

    The paper aims to determine whether it is possible to indicate lexical and phraseological units which are likely to be non-equivalent in a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural perspective. The approach adopted is focussed on words which are culture-bound as the base for derivatives and fixed expressions. It is assumed that such units have high lacunarity potential. In order to analyse it, the New Zealand English words derived from the noun kiwi and idioms containing the word are discussed. The bird called kiwi is indigenous to New Zealand and has much eco-significance, which is reflected in language. The lexical and phraseological items for the analysis excerpted from various lexicographic sources are analysed with a view to determining how many of them have non-equivalents in the Polish language. Moreover, Polish systematic equivalents of the New Zealand words and phrases are proposed and discussed.

    Статья посвящена польским именам существительным, не имеющим эвкивалентов в белорусском языке. В состав польско-белорусской нелинейной лексики входит большая группа имен существительных, не имеющих отношения к лицу, включающая в себя названия: абстрактных понятий, предметов, территорий, помещений, предприятий, заводов, отраслей производства, типов деятельности, напитков, приправ, продуктов питания, растений, деревьев, кустов, животных, насекомых; редко: музыкальных инструментов, химических веществ, транспортных средств, частей человеческого тела. Личные же имена существительные составляют менее многочислительную группу, вмещающую названия лиц, возникшие в связи с: исполняемой ими работой, занятием, интересами, возрастом, причастностью к определенной организации или общественной группе.

    Authors of translations of legal codes do not usually inform about their approach to solving translational problems. One of the reasons is the firm belief in the need for a faithful and thus literal translation of the output text. This unlawful approach creates a field for unfounded creation of so-called Equivalent terminology. Consequently, translations contain expressions whose meanings in the target language are incomprehensible or cannot be determined by reference to the doctrine or case-law. A legal approach based on subject knowledge and a precise methodology for determining interlingua equivalents eliminates the problems arising from a non-lawful approach . In the analytical part of the article it is presented the methodology of the legal approach to solving translational problems and the method of its practical application.
    Autorzy przekładów kodeksów prawnych nie informują na ogół o przyjętym rzez siebie podejściu do rozwiązywania problemów translacyjnych. Jednym z powodów jest ugruntowane przekonanie o konieczności wiernego i tym samym dosłownego przekładu tekstu wyjściowego. Takie nieprawnicze podejście tworzy pole do bezpodstawnego kreowania tzw. terminologii bezekwiwalentnej. W konsekwencji tłumaczenia zawierają wyrażenia, których znaczenia w docelowym języku są niezrozumiałe lub nie można ich ustalić poprzez odwołanie się do dorobku doktryny czy orzecznictwa. Podejście prawnicze oparte na wiedzy przedmiotowej i precyzyjnej metodologii ustalania interlingwalnych ekwiwalentów eliminuje problemy wynikające z podejścia nieprawniczego. W części analitycznej artykułu przedstawiono metodologię prawniczego podejścia do rozwiązywania problemów translacyjnych i sposób jej praktycznego zastosowania.

    W artykule podjęto problematykę lakunarności jednostek frazeologicznych w języku bułgarskim i polskim. W tekście przedstawione są różne poglądy na temat typów i stopni ekwiwalencji międzyjęzykowej we frazeologii. Autorzy podkreślają, że obecność lub brak ekwiwalencji międzyjęzykowej w jednostkach frazeologicznych powinny być ustalane na podstawie semantyki. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone na obszernym materiale ilustracyjnym, obejmującym idiomy, utrwalone porównania i inne typy jednostek frazeologicznych.
    The article deals with the issue of gaps in phraseological units in the Bulgarian and Polish languages. Different views on the types and degrees of interlinguistic equivalence in phraseology are commented on. It is emphasized that the presence or absence of interlingual equivalence in phraseological units should be determined through semantic analysis. Rich illustrative material, including idioms, stable comparisons and other types of set phrases, were examined.

    This paper represents the continuation of the research started within the article Linguo-cultural qualifiers in the Dictionary of Serbian language, where we have marked as linguo-cultural qualifiers the following dictionary markers: etn. (ethnology, ethnography), prazn. (superstition), mit. (mythology, mythological), ist. (history, historical), rlg. (religion, religious), teol. (theology, theological), crkv. (church), pravosl. (Orthodoxy, orthodox) and kat. (Catholic). On this occasion, we have chosen those lexemes which are marked by the qualifier etn. (ethnology, ethnography) in the Dictionary of Serbian language (2011), i.e. those which refer to Serbian folk life and customs, or to be more precise – names of holidays, customs, rituals, parts of folk clothes, popular games and similar, as most of these lexemes represent the so-called non-equivalent lexis and are usually problematic in terms of translating or learning Serbian as a foreign language, but at the same time enable learning about Serbian culture and tradition.
    Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi kontynuację badań, które zostały zapoczątkowane artykułem Kwalifikatory lingwokulturologiczne w Słowniku języka serbskiego. Kwalifikatorami lingwokulturologicznymi nazwaliśmy skróty słownikowe etn. (etnologia, etnografia), prazn. (przesąd), mit. (mitologia, mitologiczny), ist. (historia, historyczny), rlg. (religia, religijny), teol. (teologia, teologiczny), crkv. (kościół, kościelny), pravosl. (prawosławie, prawosławny) i kat. (katolicki). Przy tej okazji postanowiliśmy wyróżnić i zaprezentować leksemy, oznaczone w Słowniku języka serbskiego (2011) kwalifikatorem etn. (etnologia, etnografia), czyli te, które związane są z życiem i obyczajami narodowymi Serbów, a dokładniej – nazwy świąt narodowych, zwyczajów, obrzędów, części stroju narodowego, tańców narodowych i inne. Większość tych leksemów stanowi bowiem tak zwane słownictwo nieekwiwalentne i często stwarza problemy podczas tłumaczenia lub nauki języka serbskiego jako obcego, ale jednocześnie umożliwia zapoznanie się z serbską kulturą i tradycjami narodu serbskiego.

    Opis:
    A contactless energy transmission system is essential to supply onboard systems of electromagnetically levitated vehicles without physical contact to the guide rail. One of the possibilities to realise a contactless power supply (CPS) is by integrating the primary actuator into the guide rail of an electromagnetic guiding system (MGS). The secondary actuator is mounted on the elevator car. During the energy transmission, load dependent non-linear losses occur in the guide rail. The additional losses, which are caused by the leakage flux penetrating into the guide rail, cannot be modelled using the classical approach of iron losses in the equivalent circuit of a transformer, which is a constant parallel resistance to the mutual inductance. This paper introduces an approach for modelling the load dependent non-linear losses occurring in the guide rail using additional variable discrete circuit elements.
