Opis:
Nitrocellulose (NC) is a common, commercially available, cellulosederived material and has been functionalized and widely applied in microfluidic technology, immunoassays and biochemical analyses. However, existing testing parameters always fail to completely and accurately reflect its inherent quality. In this study, we have designed and assembled a novel automatic polarizing microscope test system (PMTS) to scientifically test the nitrogen content and uniformity of nitration of NC based on the chromogenic principle of a polarization microscope. The advantages of this system are: (i) the PMTS requires less sample (only a few micrograms); (ii) the test period is shorter and the results can be obtained within 20 min; (iii) the method belongs to the nondestructive testing group, and the NC sample is not burned, dissolved, or damaged; and (iv) this method has increased accuracy, and the deviation of the nitrogen content is less than ±0.05%. The properties of various NC samples prepared by different nitricsulfuric acid systems from raw materials with diverse maturities were determined via PMTS. Five NC samples with different nitrogen contents (10.9%, 11.5%, 11.8%, 12.6% and 13.5%) were tested, and the variance of the corresponding uniformity of nitration of these samples were 3.17, 1.61, 1.15, 1.76, and 2.83. The uniformity of nitration initially decreased and then increased with increasing nitrogen content, and the best uniformity of nitration appeared at a nitrogen content of 12%. We also found that fibre maturity has a positive effect on the uniformity of nitration. This testing device and method, with its cost-effectiveness and field-portability, can significantly improve the accuracy of nitration content and uniformity, and has an important value in practical applications.

Opis:
A number of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) nitration reactions were conducted with different times, temperatures and types of nitrating mixtures. The degree and yield of γ-CD nitration (γ-CDN) depended on the HNO3 concentration, the type of nitrating mixture, the nitration time and, to a lesser extent, the temperature. 100% HNO3 proved to be the finest nitrating agent. By nitrating γ-CD in this system, a degree of nitration of 1, as well as a yield of 90-99% were obtained. An examination of the properties of the resulting γ-CDN served to conclude that the density and sensitivity to mechanical stimuli (friction and impact) depend on the degree of substitution of the –OH groups with –ONO2 groups. The higher the degree of γ-CD nitration, the greater the density and sensitivity to external stimuli. Thermal analysis of the γ-CDN obtained at various nitration levels demonstrated that γ-CDN with a high degree of substitution decomposes in one exothermic stage, at temperatures of approximately 184-250 °C. The lower the degree of γ-CDN nitration, the lower is the thermal effect of decomposition, with the maximum exothermic peak being shifted increasingly towards a higher temperature.

Four new nitration methods for the synthesis of 4,4’,5,5’-tetranitro-2,2’- bi-1H-imidazole (TNBI) were examined. TNBI was synthesized by nitration of 2,2’-bi-imidazole (BI) with the following mixtures: (CH3CO)2O/HNO3, (CF3CO)2O/ HNO3, P4O10/HNO3 and H3PO4/P4O10/HNO3. Nitration of BI with a mixture of nitric acid and acetic anhydride leads to 4,4’-dinitro-bi-imidazole. The other nitrating conditions investigated gave TNBI in lower yields (6.0-22.4%). Crystallization of crude TNBI from wet ethanol/acetone gave TNBI as its dihydrate. The structures of BI and TNBI were characterized by 1H, 13C and 15N NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Friction and impact sensitivity, detonability and detonation velocity were determined for pure TNBI dihydrate.

Opis:
Dinitrotoluene (DNT) has a lot of applications. It is mainly used in the production of polyurethane forms. Other uses include the explosives industry. It is converted to trinitrotoluene (TNT), or used as an additive in propellants. The main aim of these researches was to obtain DNT in one stage process with solid acid catalyst and nitric acid. The solid catalysts were composed of transition metal oxide (MoO3) and silica gel. One of them was modifed by phosphoric acid (H3PO4/MoO3/SiO2). The addition of phosphoric acid to these catalysts enhances catalytic properties and gives new structures on the surface – mixture of MoO3 and 12-molybdophosphoric acid. The activity of two catalysts in toluene nitration was compared. Higher yields of DNT were obtained in shorter time and with lower excess of HNO3 using modifed catalyst H3PO4/MoO3/SiO2 than using catalyst MoO3/SiO2. The very high yield of DNT (85%) was obtained in the reaction with only tenfold excess of nitric acid with 10 g of H3PO4/MoO3/SiO2. The way of regeneration of the catalyst system H3PO4/MoO3/SiO2 was found and time of storing was examined.

Hazard of runaway of nitration processes in nitrocompounds production was investigated. Temperature rise in DNT nitration mixes under near adiabatic conditions was measured, and derivative dT/dζ was computed. Heat evolution rate caused by nitration (primary reaction) and oxidation (secondary reaction) were examined by means of elaborated mathematical model. Limiting values of T and dT/dζ for safe process were determined. The second part of investigation concerns detonability of solutions of nitrocompound in sulfuric acid. The detonation failure diameter df and detonation velocity D of solutions of trinitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, and trinitrobenzene in sulfuric acid and oleum have been measured in the wide range of concentrations at T = 90C. It was shown that the detonability of the nitrocompounds depends signifcantly on the sulfuric acid content. The minimum value of df for the mixture TNT/oleum is about 2 mm, i.e., 30 times less, than that for melted TNT, and practically equals to df of nitroglycerine.

The possible radical nitration reactions of isooctane fuel with nitromethane propellant, which is generally used as an additive in fuel formulations, were thermodynamically investigated both at room temperature and at a higher temperature of 691.15 K. The temperature of 691.15 K was chosen because it is the auto-ignition temperature of isooctane and nitromethane and has the potential to mimic better engine conditions. The computational calculations were performed at the theoretical level of DFT UB3LYP/cc-pVDZ. Four different nitration reactions and nitrated products were considered and interpreted in detail. The most and the least favorable nitrations were observed at the primary and secondary carbons of isooctane at 691.15 K, respectively. Four of the designated reactions were endothermic at this temperature. The other outcome of this study was that there was a direct relationship between the thermodynamic tendencies of the considered reactions and the ballistic performances (detonation velocities, detonation pressures, and specific impulses) of their nitrated products. The thermodynamic properties of heats of combustion and deflagration temperatures were calculated via empirical formulations based on the stoichiometry and some other structural parameters of the energetic materials. The results for nitromethane and the nitro-isooctane products were examined.

Salt stress is a major abiotic stress that limits agricultural productivity in many regions of the world. To understand the molecular basis of the salt stress response, two wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) cultivars, Karim and Azizi, which are of agronomic significance in Tunisia, were grown under non-saline and saline conditions (100 mM). Leaves and roots of control and salt-stressed plants were harvested after 11 days of salt treatment. Karim cultivar may behave as a typical Na+ include, which compartmentalizes Na+ within the leaf cell vacuoles where it could be used as an osmoticum to lower the osmotic potential necessary for the maintenance of the plant hydric status. While, accumulation of K+ was greater in Karim cultivar compared to Azizi, in both organs, presenting an important manifestation of salinity tolerance. Significant changes in metabolism of antioxidative system were observed, with an increase in protein tyrosine nitration, which indicates that salinity stress induces a nitro-oxidative stress.

An analysis of literature data enabled us to propose a simple model of the nitration of MPD. The model was verified on the basis of literature data and our own experimental data. The influence of the rate of addition of nitric acid, into a model reactor, on temperature and composition of the reaction mixture was investigated numerically. The proposed nitration model could be useful in a study of the MPD nitration process on a large scale.

Toluene mono-nitration in a semi-batch reactor was investigated with reaction calorimeter (RC1). The mixed acid HNO3/H2SO4/H2O (wt%) was used in proportion 13/66/21, which is similar to industrial parameters. The exothermic rates at different reaction temperatures were compared, and then the curves of heat generation rate after dosing were analyzed. The Maximal Temperature attainable by runaway of the desired Synthetic Reaction (MTSR) under different conditions were calculated for the course hazard evaluation. The results showed that the average reaction heat of mono-nitration was between 169.07~177.11 kJ mol-1, and the special heat of reactant was about 2 kJ kg-1 K-1. Average Ea of second order kinetic was about 30 kJ mol-1, and reaction rate was 10-4 mol s-1 l-1 order of magnitude when the strength of sulphuric acid was about 73.5%. It was also found that when temperature or stirring speed increases, the potential heat accumulation decreases.

This work has studied the effects on the nitration of toluene by 100% nitric(V) acid and a nitric(V) acid/dichloromethane mixture. The results show that the amount of meta-nitrotoluene decreases with decreases in reaction temperature. From 25 °C to –10 °C the amount of metanitrotoluene was less than for nitrating toluene by a nitric(V)acid/dichloromethane mixture than for nitration by 100% nitric(V) acid. Furthermore, from –20 °C to –30 °C results were similar with 2.6% of meta-nitrotoluene in the reaction products. An excess of nitric(V) acid in the nitration of toluene by the nitric(V) acid/dichloromethane mixture than in nitration by 100% nitric(V) acid. Nitration by the nitric(V) acid/dichloromethane mixture is less exothermic and easier to control than nitration by 100% nitric(V) acid.

Peroxynitrite-mediated linoleic acid oxidation and tyrosine nitration were analysed in the presence of synthetic model neuromelanins: dopamine (DA) -melanin, cysteinyldopamine (CysDA) -melanin and various DA/CysDA copolymers. The presence of melanin significantly decreased the amount of 3-nitrotyrosine formed. This inhibitory effect depended on the type and concentration of melanin polymer. It was found that incorporation of CysDA-derived units into melanin attenuated its protective effect on tyrosine nitration induced by peroxynitrite. In the presence of bicarbonate, the melanins also inhibited 3-nitrotyrosine formation in a concentration dependent manner, although the extent of inhibition was lower than in the absence of bicarbonate. The tested melanins inhibited peroxynitrite-induced formation of linoleic acid hydroperoxides, both in the absence and in the presence of bicarbonate. In the presence of bicarbonate, among the oxidation products appeared 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE). CysDA-melanin inhibited the formation of HNE, while DA-melanin did not affect the aldehyde level. The results of the presented study suggest that neuromelanin can act as a natural scavenger of peroxynitrite.
