The aim of this paper is to explore older in-migrants' experiences and perceptions of their spatial context at the neighbourhood level, the key aspects in their attachment to the neighbourhood, and the role of place in their experience of ageing. Our qualitative research was carried out in Newton Hall (United Kingdom). The findings show that older people can have a proactive role in terms of placemaking and their own wellbeing. However, the study also reveals that the condition of the spatial context can either support or hinder older people's sense of wellbeing.

The conjugate gradient method of Liu and Storey is an efficient minimization algorithm which uses second derivatives information, without saving matrices, by finite difference approximation. It is shown that the finite difference scheme can be removed by using a quasi-Newton approximation for computing a search direction, without loss of convergence. A conjugate gradient method based on BFGS approximation is proposed and compared with existing methods of the same class.

An interior point method for solving nonlinear multiobjective programming problems, over a convex set contained in the real space R^n, has been developed in this paper. In this method a new strictly concave logarithmic barrier function has been suggested in order to transform the orginal problem into a sequence of unconstrained subproblems. These subproblems can be solved using Newton method for determining Newton's directions along which line searches are performed. It also has been proved that the number of iterations required by the suggested algorithm to converge to an [epsilon]-optimal solution is 0(m|ln[epsilon]|), depending on predetermined error tolerance [epsilon] and the number of constraints m.

Opis:
A method is presented for evaluating the performance of piston internal combustion engines used as the main engines on sea-going ships and acting in typical operating conditions. These conditions are described taking into account the performance area of engines of this type. The presented method provides opportunities for calculating the numerical effect of the action using the integral calculus. The above effect is presented as a physical quantity expressed by a number with the metric unit called the joule-second. Proposed is the use of types of integrands (which are functional dependences of the energy converted in these engines on time) which make it possible to use the second fundamental theorem of calculus justifying the use of the Newton-Leibniz formula. The object of the analysis is the process of changes of the energy converted in the internal combustion engines during their operation, described with the aid of a deterministic model of the real process taking into account its sample realisation.

In this paper a new approach is explained for solving intuitionistic dual fuzzy fractional nonlinear equations. Here we have suggested a numerical method for solving a dual fuzzy nonlinear fractional equations instead of standard analytical techniques which are not suitable everywhere. Initially we wrote a dual fuzzy non-linear fractional equations in parametric form and then solve it by iterative method. An illustrative example is given to show the efficiency of our approach.

A new Kantorovich-type convergence theorem for Newton's method is established for approximating a locally unique solution of an equation F(x)=0 defined on a Banach space. It is assumed that the operator F is twice Fréchet differentiable, and that F', F'' satisfy Lipschitz conditions. Our convergence condition differs from earlier ones and therefore it has theoretical and practical value.

Opis:
Non-linear phenomena appear in many fields of engineering and science. Research on numerical methods is continually extending with the improvement of the latest computing tools. In today’s computational field, one requires maximum achievement in a minimum amount of time. Therefore, there is a need to modify the Newton-type method to achieve higher-order convergence to solve non-linear equations. While the modified methods are expected to be higher-order convergent, the minor computational information and the maximum time efficiency are also important factors. We propose a three-step hybrid iterative method having a non-linear nature. Per iteration, the method requires three function evaluations and three first-order derivatives. The method is theoretically proven to be tenth-order convergent. The mathematical results of the proposed strategy to solve models from fluid dynamics, electric field, and real gases demonstrated better performance. In light of error analysis, computational productivity, and CPU times, the proposed method’s performance is compared to the famous Newton and a recently proposed tenth-order method.

The quick leakage alarm and the accurate concentration prediction are two important aspects of natural gas safety monitoring. In this paper, a rapid monitoring method of sensor data sharing, rapid leakage alarm and simultaneous output of concentrations prediction is proposed to accelerate the alarm speed and predict the possible impact of leakage. In this method, the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory is used to fuse the trend judgment and the CUSUM (cumulative sum) and the Gauss-Newton iteration is used to predict the concentration. The experiment system based on the TGS2611 natural gas sensor was built. The results show that the fusion method is significantly better than the single monitoring method. The alarm time of fusion method was more advanced than that of the CUSUM method and the trend method (being averagely, 10.4% and 7.6% in advance in the CUSUM method and the trend method respectively). The relative deviations of the predicted concentration were the maximum (13.3%) at 2000 ppm (parts per million) and the minimum (0.8%) at 6000 ppm, respectively.

The present paper is concerned with the identification of an obstacle or void of different conductivity included in a two-dimensional domain by measurements of voltage and currents at the boundary. We employ a reformulation of the given identification problem as a shape optimization problem as proposed by Roche and Sokolowski (1996). It turns out that the shape Hessian degenerates at the given hole which gives a further hint on the ill-posedness of the problem. For numerical methods, we propose a preprocessing for detecting the barycentre and a crude approximation of the void or hole. Then, we resolve the shape of the hole by a regularized Newton method.

This paper presents the real sense of the classical and quantum theory of gravitation as a component of the actual picture of the universe where the volume, as the size of the expanding universe, approaches infinity, while the total of material masses goes to zero. At present, these two standard theories describe the phenomenon of gravitation but do not explain the very mechanism and the cause of this process. This constant and real lack of information on that subject is consistent with natural laws and the same with the laws of physics, which were already experimentally determined by Werner Heisenberg in 1927. The paper also presents the causes of inability to explain up to the present the actual picture of the essence of the universe.

The aim of this work is to introduce an adaptive strategy to monitor the rate of convergence of a Newton-like method in numerical shape optimization. Such superlinear iterative algorithms are often computationally intensive and the rate of convergence depends on how accurate the numerical solution of the state equation is. The model concerns a cost function depending on the unknown domain [Omega], and the solution of an integral equation.

A difficulty of freeform surfaces evaluations lies in a setup of a coordinate measuring system in general, when it is not possible to use the standard system of alignment by a point, a line, and a surface. An algorithm for the measurement adjustment using a small workpiece coordinate system movement and rotation to achieve a smaller least square error of the produced surface for a given freeform surface defined by the function of two variables is considered. The algorithm uses the Newton method for calculation of the orthogonal distance of a measured point to a given surface and also for minimization of the sum of the distance squares. Numerical results for an example are given.

We consider a mathematical model which describes the contact between a linearly elastic body and an obstacle, the so-called foundation. The process is static and the contact is bilateral, i.e., there is no loss of contact. The friction is modeled with a nonmotonone law. The purpose of this work is to provide an error estimate for the Galerkin method as well as to present and compare two numerical methods for solving the resulting nonsmooth and nonconvex frictional contact problem. The first approach is based on the nonconvex proximal bundle method, whereas the second one deals with the approximation of a nonconvex problem by a sequence of nonsmooth convex programming problems. Some numerical experiments are realized to compare the two numerical approaches.

This paper considers parameter estimation of superimposed exponential signals in multiplicative and additive noise which are all independent and identically distributed. A modified Newton–Raphson algorithm is used to estimate the frequencies of the considered model, which is further used to estimate other linear parameters. It is proved that the modified Newton–Raphson algorithm is robust and the corresponding estimators of frequencies attain the same convergence rate with Least Squares Estimators (LSEs) under the same noise conditions, but it outperforms LSEs in terms of the mean squared errors. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by some numerical experiments.
