    In this study, we explore the connections between business model adaptation and the success of new ventures. We do so by analysing in depth the business model evolution of three new Italian ventures throughout their first years of life. We try to understand if and how the evolution of these firms’ business models is connected to their success. Our analysis reveals that adapting their business models was crucial to enabling these firms to survive in extremely dynamic environments. However, it did not fully act as a catalyst for their processes of growth and did not increase their profitability.

    Heterosoricinae are the oldest known soricids, their records dating back to the middle Eocene of North America and earliest Oligocene of Eurasia. They became extinct during the Miocene and were thus far only known from dental and cranial remains. For the first time, a virtually complete heterosoricine is described, coming from the early/middle Miocene locality of Shanwang, Shandong Province, which is famous for the diversity and excellent preservation of its fossils. Lusorex taishanensis gen. et sp. nov. is closely related to Wilsonosorex from the early Hemingfordian of North America. Both are unusual in sharing well−developed conules on the upper molars and reduced ectocingulids on the lowers, and most likely these sister taxa reflect faunal exchange between North America and NE Asia in early Miocene time. L. taishanensis was the size of a European common shrew, Sorex araneus. The heavy masticatory apparatus of the new heterosoricine contrasts with its slender postcranial skeleton. Adaptively, L. taishanensis appears to be similar to the North American Blarina brevicauda in its strong masticatory apparatus, very short tail, and slight limb specializations toward fossorial habits. It differs from other soricids as far as is known by unfused tibia and fibula.

    Janusz Głowacki’s internationally acclaimed tragicomedy inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone has been the subject of intense debate and misinterpretations. The article aims to demonstrate that the play was primarily written in Polish, and that the English version is an adaptation/rewriting made by the author in collaboration with the American screenwriter Joan Torres. Furthermore, it shows that the English version was created while the writing of the Polish text was still in progress, so that the former influenced and left clear traces in the latter, questioning the traditional hierarchy between the original and the translated or adapted text.

    Artykuł podejmuje próbę ukazania możliwości zwiększenia poziomu efektywności readaptacji społecznej skazanych, jaki może wynikać z połącznia założeń tradycyjnej resocjalizacji i resocjalizacji twórczej z założeniami pedagogiki towarzyszenia. Innymi słowy, chodzi o zwrócenie uwagi na potencjał transcendencji w szeroko pojmowanych procesach resocjalizacji. Tę próbę poszerzenia refleksji resocjalizacyjnej o aspekt transcendentalny rozpoczynają zasygnalizowane badania, które ukazują stosunkowo niski poziom życia duchowego skazanych w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną, czyli osobami niekaranymi (studentami warszawskich uczelni). Uzasadniając potrzebę zmiany tej sytuacji, odwołano się do pedagogiki transcendentalnej po to, by na tej podstawie zaproponować obszar dalszych badań i oddziaływań pozostających dotychczas na marginesie refleksji i praktyki kryminologicznej, penitencjarnej czy penologicznej. Przedstawione analizy oparte na promowanej przez Zbigniewa Marka postawie towarzyszenia pozwalają upatrywać pożądanej zmiany w warstwie teoretycznej pedagogiki resocjalizacyjnej, którą przez pryzmat zasygnalizowanych zależności wyraża triada: towarzyszenie – wspomaganie – transgresja.
    The article attempts to show the possibility of increasing the level of efficiency of the social readaptation of convicts, which may result from combining the assumptions of traditional resocialization and creative social rehabilitation with the assumptions of the pedagogy of accompaniment. In other words, it is about drawing attention to the potential of transcendence in the broadly understood processes of resocialization. This attempt to broaden social rehabilitation reflections by means of the transcendental aspect, begins with the planned research, which results in a relatively low level of spiritual life of the convicts in comparison with the control group – unpunished persons (students of various Warsaw universities). Justifying the need to change this situation, reference was made to transcendental pedagogy in order to propose the area of further research and certain impacts that have remained on the margins of reflection and criminological, penitentiary or penological practice. The presented analyses, based on the attitude of accompaniment promoted by Zbigniew Marek, allow us to see the desired change in the theoretical dimension of resocialization pedagogy, which through the prism of these relations is expressed by the following triad: accompaniment – support – transgression.

    Problematyka badawcza artykułu skupia się na obserwacji zmian zachodzących w sferze gospodarczej wybranych wielkich miast oraz ich otoczenia. Celem artykułu jest porównanie procesów zmian w strukturze gospodarczej wybranego miasta do procesów zmian w strukturze gospodarczej najbliższego otoczenia, na przykładzie czterech wybranych obszarów. W pierwszej części analizy przebadano proces adaptacji struktur podmiotów gospodarczych stworzonych na podstawie sekcji PKD 2007. W drugiej części analizy przeprowadzono badanie struktur podmiotów gospodarczych nowych sektorów gospodarki, wyodrębnioną na podstawie działów sekcji J, K i M. W opracowaniu zastosowano metody badania struktur, uwzględniające intensywność, szybkość i monotoniczność zachodzenia zmian w okresie od 2009 r. do 2015 r.
    Changes in the economic structure are the result of the adaptive changes of individual companies and entire industries. The aim of the paper is to compare the processes of change in the economic structure of the city to the processes of change in the economic structure of its immediate surroundings. The study used methods of testing structures, taking into account the intensity, the speed and the monotonicity of changes during the period 2009-2015. In the first part of the paper are information about the process of adapting economic, the legitimacy of considering the territory of the city along with neighboring areas. Then the article focuses on the interpretation of the analysis’s results and the comparison of adaptation processes in the cities and in the vicinity. These results concern the structure of companies by section by NACE rev. 1.2 and by division of sections J, K and M representing the new sectors of the economy. The study selected 14 districts included in the four areas.

    The article discusses the problem of occupational adaptation, which is a significant motivator for keeping a job. The concern of employers that the subordinates are best suited to the work they perform is important for the efficient and effective operation of the entire organization. When an employee has a sense of adaptation to the tasks and requirements of the work imposed on him, he achieves a positive state of well-being, thus striving to stay in the company for as long as possible. Efforts of the organization to ensure the required quality of work already at the stage of introduction into the organization translate into benefits from the skills and competencies of the new employee. The aim of the article is to present selected issues related to the professional adaptation of newly hired employees in the workplace. In the theoretical part, the essence and scope of professional adaptation of newly hired employees were pointed out and the factors conditioning the achievement of adaptation to the organization were analyzed. The empirical part discusses adaptation tools, which organizations use to provide employees with support in the process of introduction to work. It also examines the level of their effectiveness in adapting to work in selected aspects of the organization's functioning.

    The text attempts at explaining different positions that the two groups of Eastern European immigrants – Jews from the former Soviet Union and Poles – have acquired in the New York City labour market at the turn of the 20th and 21st century. The initial difference in the human capital, measured by education and occupation has been accelerated by the difference in social capital that the two groups could rely on in New York City (organizational network of legal and practical assistance coming from one of the wealthiest and prestigious group for post-Soviet Jewish immigrants versus support coming from working class but well-rooted group of Polish-Americans and ‘white ethnics’ for Polish immigrants). These different resources have been shaped in the course of over a century of Jewish and Polish migrations from Eastern Europe to the US. Additionally, since the late 20th century, the difference between the two groups has been further deepened by the legal status that is typically accessible to the two of them in the US (refugees vs immigrants, including the unauthorized ones). The text also compares the Eastern European immigrants’ position with other immigrant groups’ one in the New York City labour market. The US 2000 census statistics (The Newest New Yorkers 2000) document the difference in human capital and legal status of the two groups while results of my fieldwork in Greenpoint, a traditional destination of Polish immigrants in Brooklyn and of the existing qualitative research on post-Soviet Jewish immigrants in New York City provided data on social networks and extended evidence on human capital and consequences of legal status.

    The issue of restoration with the new adaptation of industrial architectural monuments is one of the most difficult tasks of the restoration industry, taking into consideration the specific character of these objects, the list of materials and structures used, the layout. In most cases, objects of restoration with a change in function are those industrial facilities which are located in the central regions of large cities made of brick and are architectural monuments of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, that is, during the “construction boom” period. As a consequence, the restoration measures are aimed at such activities as strengthening and eliminating the emergency condition of footings, foundations and roofs; replacement and restoration of ceilings, brick masonry, restoration of the decor.
    Problematyka restauracji oraz adaptacji zabytków architektury przemysłowej jest jednym z najtrudniejszych zadań, biorąc pod uwagę szeroko pojętą konserwację zabytków. Na proces ten wpływa bowiem specyfika obiektów poprzemysłowych, technologia ich wykonania, a także konstrukcja oraz układ funkcjonalno-przestrzenny. Warto także zwrócić uwagę, że w większości to właśnie obiekty postindustrialne, położone w centrach miast zabytkowych, są przedmiotem restauracji oraz adaptacji do nowych funkcji. Obiekty te, wzniesione z cegły, pochodzą w większości z okresu drugiej połowy XIX i początku XX wieku, tj. okresu tzw. „boomu budowlanego”. Proces ich restauracji oraz adaptacji opiera się m.in. na takich działaniach jak wzmocnienie i naprawa fundamentów i dachów; wymiana i renowacja sufitów, wzmocnienie murowanych ceglanych fasad oraz renowacja wystroju.
