Opis:
Night-shift workers may develop poor cardiovascular health. Studies about heart rate variability (HRV) metrics could identify risk factors in this population and be used to examine the effectiveness of interventions for optimizing the health of night-shift workers. The purpose of this review was to examine the use of HRV methodologies in studies about night-shift work. Overall, 34 articles met the selection criteria and underwent a methodological critique. The main conclusion across these studies was that night-shift work could increase the sympathetic influences on the variability between heartbeats. In many cases, however, important methodological details were omitted (e.g., the number and duration of electrocardiogram recordings, sampling rates, R–R segment duration, wavelet transform methods). Recommendations include adding measures of disease outcomes, using ≥250 Hz sampling rates and 600-s R–R segments, and measuring sleep and circadian rhythms. With these approaches, researchers can design investigations that identify therapeutic targets for improving the health of night-shift workers.

Vasopressin - pituitary neurohormone, in addition to the essential role of which is to regulate blood pressure and affecting the body's water balance, it is involved in other processes such as social behaviour, memory processes and learning. It also plays an important role in modulating anxiety. This hormone seems indispensable for the creation of proper social interactions, and its low plasma levels correlate with the dysfunction of interpersonal relationships. In this article, we review and summarize the studies on the role of vasopressin in the pathogenesis and therapy of schizophrenia. Despite some potential limitations in peer-reviewed studies, the literature suggests the potential role of vasopressin in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and the possible therapeutic application in this psychiatric disorder.

Parasitic diseases of the central nervous system are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Many human parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii, Entamoeba histolytica, Trypanosoma cruzi, Taenia solium, Echinococcus spp., Toxocara canis, T. cati, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, Trichinella spp., during invasion might involve the CNS. Some parasitic infections of the brain are lethal if left untreated (e.g., cerebral malaria – Plasmodium falciparum, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) – Naegleria fowleri, baylisascariosis – Baylisascaris procyonis, African sleeping sickness – African trypanosomes). These diseases have diverse vectors or intermediate hosts, modes of transmission and endemic regions or geographic distributions. The neurological, cognitive, and mental health problems caused by above parasites are noted mostly in low-income countries; however, sporadic cases also occur in non-endemic areas because of an increase in international travel and immunosuppression caused by therapy or HIV infection. The presence of parasites in the CNS may cause a variety of nerve symptoms, depending on the location and extent of the injury; the most common subjective symptoms include headache, dizziness, and root pain while objective symptoms are epileptic seizures, increased intracranial pressure, sensory disturbances, meningeal syndrome, cerebellar ataxia, and core syndromes. Many early symptoms of CNS invasion are often nonspecific therefore a diagnosis can be difficult. This article presents the epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of selected parasitic neuroinfections.

Opis:
In some patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the causative agent of attack is stress (AF associated with adrenergic activity). In others, AF usually begins during relax or sleep (AF associated with vagal nerve dominance). This study aimed to investigate the individual factors associated with the adrenergic or vagal type of AF. This study included 138 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Sixty-eight patients reported that AF was frequently triggered by stress (sympathetic-type AF) and 70 patients reported that AF usually began during relaxation or sleep (vagal-type AF). Gender, age, ejection fraction, and temperament were compared across the two groups. Temperament was evaluated using the Formal Characteristics of Behaviour-Temperament Inventory. The groups differed only in temperament. Patients with sympathetic-type AF had a higher score for emotional reactivity (p = 0.002) and perseverance (p = 0.002) temperament traits and a lower score for endurance (p = 0.003) than patients with vagal-type AF and than the average in population.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Aging is a process that also affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) making it less adaptable to environmental and intrinsic stimuli and affecting its ability to maintain body homeostasis. The aim of this study was to estimate the resting ANS function using heart rate variability (HRV) method and by noradrenaline measurement in aging, 2–12-months-old rats. Materials and method. Resting 15-minute-long ECG recordings were performed in anaesthetized rats with a subsequent spectral HRV analysis. Basic non-normalized HRV components in the range of very low (VLF), low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, along with the total HRV spectrum power (TP) were estimated. Moreover, normalized LF (nLF) and normalized HF (nHF) were calculated. Blood samples were also collected to assay plasma noradrenaline (NA) level. Results. In the overall assessment, plasma noradrenaline level as well as both TP and all non-normalized HRV components demonstrated a tendency for reduction when compared the first (2nd) and last (12th) months. In the case of nLF and nHF, a trend of nLF predominance in the 2nd and 3rd month was revealed while an inverse relation was observed from the 6th month on, with nHF superiority. Overall, males reached comparable or slightly higher NA and non-normalized HRV values compared to females, although most differences were not statistically significant. A parallel decline of LF (starting from the 10th month) and HF (from the 6th month) was demonstrated in both male and female animals. Female rats had a little more stable nLF and nHF course in the study time. Conclusions. Rat ANS aging is associated with global HRV decrease with parallel plasma NA decline, although without selective impairment of individual (sympathetic/parasympathetic) ANS components.

Opis:
Objectives: To investigate the association between per capita pesticide consumption and infant mortality rates from CNS and CVS congenital malformations in microregions in the South and Southeast Region of Brazil. Material and Methods: An ecological study was conducted using data on pesticide expenditure in 1985 and 1996, and deaths caused by CNS and CVS malformations in infants under 1 year old in 1986-1990 and 1997-2001, respectively. Per capita pesticide consumption and infant mortality rates were calculated for each microregion. Microregions were grouped according to quintiles of pesticide consumption, taking the first quintile as reference. The association between pesticide consumption and infant mortality was examined by calculating Spearman correlation coefficients (r) and mortality rate ratios (RR), stratifying by gender and type of microregion (urban or rural). Results: Significant and positive correlations between per capita pesticide consumption and rates of mortality due to CNS and CVS defects were observed in rural but not urban microregions. In general, mortality RRs for the 2 types of malformations in rural microregions were significantly higher in each quintile of pesticide consumption compared to the lowest quintile in the 2 study periods, with elevations ranging between 10% and 30%. Likewise, mortality RRs in these microregions showed significant trends of increase across quintiles of pesticide consumption in both study periods. In urban areas, however, mortality RRs from both CNS and CVS malformations were weak and not statistically significant, and a trend of increase of mortality with increasing pesticide usage was not observed. Conclusions: The results show the relevance of pesticide exposure in rural areas with intense agricultural activity, suggesting that such prenatal exposures may be related with the occurrence of certain congenital defects.

Opis:
Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors delivered at the axonal terminals can be retrogradely transported toward neuronal cell bodies throughout the axons. This retrograde phenomenon can serve as a powerful tool for experiments and gene therapy using AAVs. The advantages of using AAV vectors delivered retrogradely are greater cellular specificity, high transduction efficiency, increased safety, and absence of cytotoxicity. The numerous axonal projections in the nervous system provide a neuronal network for the convenient and widespread distribution of viral vectors between adjacent brain structures and over long distances. The retrograde efficiency of AAVs in the neurons of the central nervous system (CNS) depends on AAV serotype, the region of injection, and the type of neurons. In this review, we describe AAV serotypes and their retrograde transport properties after injection and discuss brain structures or types of cells that are targeted for retrograde transport. In particular, AAV serotypes 2, 5, 8, 9, rh10, and PHP.eB are extensively reviewed as they demonstrate retrograde transport potential suitable for use in gene therapy applications.
