Polystichum setiferum
Opis:
During field studies in 2019 in the Beskid Śląski mountain range in southern Poland, one individual morphologically resembling Polystichum setiferum was found. Nuclear DNA content analysis confirmed the species identity. The new stand of P. setiferum corresponds to historical literature reports and herbarium specimens from the Czech Republic and Poland, and extends the northeastern limit of the distribution of this species. As the historical stands in both countries have not been confirmed, the newly discovered stand is at present strongly isolated, as the nearest extant locations of P. setiferum in Austria, southern Hungary, and western Romania are nearly 500 km away. Therefore, this unique stand deserves special attention and protection.

Opis:
Heterogeneous and disturbed habitats within railway areas create an ideal environment for establishment of invasive plant species. In this study, we compared the invasive species composition and abundance within railway areas of two cities, Lublin, SE Poland and Lviv, W Ukraine. In total, 70 invasive species were recorded. The invasive species list was similar for the two cities, with the most invasive species occurring at both (81.4%), 8.5% occurring only in Lublin and 10% only in Lviv. The proportion of invasive species in the total flora was almost 1.5-fold higher at Lviv compared to Lublin. Invasive species have originated mainly from continental America (45.7%), followed by Asia and Eurasia. The participation of invasive plants derived from Asia and Eurasia at Lviv is higher than at Lublin. The invasive flora includes a wide range of taxonomic groups, with a predominance of Asteraceae and Poaceae. The ecological attributes of invasive species on railway areas are: mainly annual therophytes, mostly wind- and insect pollination modes, a predominance of generative reproduction, anthropochorous and anemochorous dispersal and short-term persistent, long-term persistent or transient seed banks.
Zróżnicowane i zaburzone siedliska w obrębie terenów kolejowych tworzą środowisko do zadomowienia obcych gatunków roślin. Gatunki inwazyjne pochodziły głównie z Ameryki (45.7% gatunków), Azji i Eurazji. Udział gatunków inwazyjnych przybyłych z Azji i Eurazji był wyższy we Lwowie niż w Lublinie. Gatunki należące do rodziny Asteraceae i Poaceae dominowały wśród gatunków inwazyjnych.

Opis:
Alien brambles (Rubus, Rosaceae) generate significant ecological and nature conservational threats worldwide, however, the European flora and vegetation is not seriously affected by their impacts. In this study, I report on the distribution and habitats of alien brambles in Hungary, on the basis of comprehensive field studies and complete herbarium revision. The first introduction of a non-native species of bramble (R. phoenicolasius) was reported in 1999 in the country. R. armeniacus was first recognized in 2014 (but it had been present probably decades earlier). It typically occurs in forest-poor landscapes, in regions with larger closed forests it is mainly confined to plantations, but few occurrences in nature-like stand are also found. The occur- rences in the forest steppe region indicate its drought tolerance; besides, it is the only bramble species present in the areas of typical forest-steppe climate. The species is obviously advancing (with more than 100 localities altogether) and constitutes an actual threat for the diversity and structure of fringes and wooded grassland mosaics in drier regions. Two new casual aliens, R. laciniatus and R. occidentalis, are reported here for the first time for Hungary. Another two species, R. odoratus and R. xanthocarpus, are known only from cultivation.

Opis:
The family Gobiidae is the largest teleost family, consisting of more than 2,000 species in more than 200 genera. They have adapted to a wide range of habitats, inhabiting mostly marine and brackish waters. Recently invasive Ponto-Caspian gobies have caused significant changes to the structure of fish assemblage throughout the European waters. The aim of the study was to verify the possibility of identifying three species of the genus Gobiidae based on the analysis of the mitochondrial region of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene. 339 samples originated from seven countries and 17 different sites were investigated. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the extracted DNA was conducted by measuring light absorbance and electrophoretic separation. Approximately 650-bp (base pairs) fragments were amplified from the 5' region of the mitochondrial COI with the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) reaction. Sequences of 652 bp were obtained and compared with reference sequences in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Based on the sequence analysis, we determined that in the analysed geographical regions, the goby preliminary identified morphologically as the round goby was represented by three species: round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), tubenose goby (Proterorhinus marmoratus), and monkey goby (Neogobius fluviatilis). The latter two are newly reported for their new habitats. Genetic characterisation of such populations offers the opportunity to assess their genetic stability, which provides agencies managing the aquatic environment in EU countries with a tool for revising the legislation, including regulations relevant for updating the status of native and invasive species in European waters.

Opis:
This study is aimed towards investigating the temporal variation in species composition, diversity and regeneration status of Chilimo dry Afromontane forest in the Central Highlands of Ethiopia. A total of 35 permanent sample plots of 20 m × 20 m (400 m2) each were established in the natural forest, laid out on transects of altitudinal gradients, with a distance of 100m between plots. The plots were measured twice in 2012 and 2017. Three subplots, 5m × 5m, and 1 m2 were laid out inside the main plots for sapling, shrub and seedling data collection. Species composition, diversity, important value index (IVI) and regeneration data were analyzed using appropriate formulas. Data analysis was made using R - studio software. A total of 31 trees and shrubs representing 25 families were recorded, 20 (64.52 %) were trees and 11 (35.48 %) were shrubs. Thereof, 28, 23 and 26 species under highest, middle and lowest altitudinal gradient were recorded. The most dominant tree species were: Juniperus procera, Podocarpus falcatus, Olea europea, Scolopia theifolia and Allophyllus abyssinicus. The species composition, diversity, abundance, dominance and important value index significantly varied among species, altitudinal gradient and slope. The diameter distribution was an inverted J - shaped distribution pattern. The highest species richness and diversity index were found under middle altitudinal gradient, while the lowest species richness and diversity index were found under the highest altitudinal gradient. The mean annual volume increment ranged from 4.223 to 0.228 m3 ha-1 yr-1, while the basal area increment varied from 0.85 to 0.020 m2 ha-1 yr-1. Among the sampled species, ten species had fair, 5 poor and 14 species had no regeneration. In conclusion, the Chilimo dry Afromontane forest is suffering from low recruitment and regeneration. Thus, appropriate forest management options should be implemented.

Opis:
In fall 2018 and 2019, we assessed colonization by fungi on Douglas fir trees [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco], white pine (Pinus strobus L.), and red cedar (Thuja plicata D. Don.) on selected experimental plots of the former Prussian Experimental Station, where nonnative tree species were introduced from North America over a century ago. The presence of sporocarps on trunks, root collars, and stumps as well as the litter layer in the soil within a radius of 0.5 m around the trunk of the tree was determined. Additionally, the volume of dead wood on the forest floor of the entire plot was assessed. We recorded numerous fungi on trees and stumps as well as in the litter and soil. For the 31 plots in 12 forest districts, we determined 745 sporocarps of 48 taxa, with 335/19 on the wood of P. menziesii trees and stumps, 377/15 on P. strobus, and 33/6 on T. plicata trees. The highest share of trees with various trunk damage levels was found for T. plicata (70.3%) and the lowest for P. menziesii (6.2%). Among the root parasitic fungi, Heterobasidion sp. and Armillaria sp. were found, especially on the collars and stumps of T. plicata and P. strobus; we did not find basidiomata of both pathogens on P. menziesii. The volume of dead wood within the P. menziesii plots averaged 7.1 m3/ha, whereas in T. plicata plots, it was 56.3 m3/ha. We identified 10 taxa that have not been reported in association with P. strobus for Poland (Cylindrobasidium laeve, Dacrymyces sp., Exidia pithya, E. saccharina, Gymnopilus pnetrans, Leptoporus mollis, Mycena sanguinolenta, Tapinella panuoides, Trametes versicolor, and Xylaria hypoxylon) and three taxa (Exidia pithya, Leptoporus mollis, Serpula himantioides) associated with T. plicata.

Opis:
The variability of pollen grains of 16 species from genus Rosa L. was studied (i.e. Rosa agrestis, R. canina, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. inodora, R. jundzillii, R. kostrakiewiczii, R. majalis, R. micrantha, R. mollis, R. pendulina, R. rubiginosa, R. sherardii, R. tomentosa, R. villosa, and R. zalana). The material came from 107 native localities of those species in Poland. The measurements are based on at least 30–50 randomly selected mature pollen grains per specimen. In total, 3510 pollen grains were examined. They were analysed for 8 quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), length of equatorial axis (E), exine thickness on the pole (Exp), exine thickness at the equator plane (Exe), length of ectocolpi (Le), P/E ratio, and relative thickness of exine (Exp/P and Exe/E ratio). Statistically significant differences were found among the examined species with regard to all analysed pollen features. The pollen and ectocolpi dimensions (P, E and Le) were largest in R.gallica (35.9, 28.1, and 28.0 μm, respectively) and smallest in R. majalis (27.0, 20.2, and 21.2 μm, respectively). The mean coefficients of variability of the pollen features measured can be used to arrange the examined rose species from the least to the most variable as follows: R. pendulina, R. villosa, R. jundzillii, R. inodora, R. canina, R. rubiginosa, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. agrestis , R. micrantha, R. zalana, R. tomentosa, R. sherardii, R. majalis, R. kostrakiewiczii and R. mollis. The obtained data failed to confirm fully both the division of the Rosa genus currently in force in taxonomy into sections as well as relationships among the examined species from the Caninae section. In addition, values of morphological characters of the same species may differ considerably from one another. The extent of these differences indicated that it was necessary to measure large numbers of pollen grains in order to obtain accurate biometric data.

Opis:
The potential differentiations in litter chemistry among native and non-native trees are poorly understood. We compared the chemical composition of leaf litterfall of 11 exotic tree species, e.g. coniferous: Abies cephalonica, A. grandis, A. procera, Chamaecyparis pisifera, Pinus peuce, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata, and deciduous: Acer rubrum, A. saccharum, Betula alleghaniensis and Quercus rubra, with that of a native European conifer, Pinus sylvestris (as reference to coniferous species) anda mixture of native European Quercus robur, Carpinus betulus, Tilia cordata, T. platyphyllos and Corylus avellana leaves (as a reference mixture of deciduous species). We found significant differences among the species studied in nitrogen and carbon content in needles/leaves, C/N ratio, as well as total soluble phenolic compounds (TPh) and total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) content, including soluble carbohydrates and starch. However, we found no clear differentiation of exotic from native tree species in the analyzed elements and metabolites. Among the exotic coniferous tree species, P. menziesii stood out among the species studied – fallen needles of this species were characterized by relatively high TPh and TNC content. The relationships between TPh and TNC content in leaf and needle litter among tree species were similar among two consecutive years. For deciduous tree species, the tendency of higher TPh content and C/N ratio in leaves falling earlier (September; leaves of sun-type) than later (November; leaves of shade-type) was more distinct than in coniferous tree species. Generally, we cannot see any special differences in the levels or mutual quantitative relationships of the chemical compounds studied in fallen needles/leaves of exotic tree species in comparison with native tree species.

Z czynników działających negatywnie na stan zdrowotny drzew rozpoznano m.in.: uszkodzenia mechaniczne, chlorozy, patogeny i szkodniki. The publication presents an evaluation ofhealth status of roadside trees (growing between the road and the pavement) in the central part of the city of Opole. To assess the health condition of the trees the method proposed by 1. Duda was used, whereby the health of a tree is assessed in the twelve gradual scale. Among the surveyed trees, 13 species were found, of which the most abundant, constituting 63.8% of the examined group were: TWa cordata, Aesculus hippocastanum, Robinia pseudoacacia, Tilia platyphyllos. Eight native and five alien species in the domestic flora were distinguished. Among the studied objects definitely the largest share - 78.1 % had the trees in good health. The specimens in poor and very poor condition constituted 19.3% and 2.6% respectively. In the group representing the native species oftrees, 75.7% of the specimens in good condition, 21.0% in poor and 3.3% in very poor was noted, while among the alien species 81.4% were in good condition, 16.8% in bad and 1.8% in very poor. Among the factors negalively affecting the health status oftrees, mechanical damages, chloroses, pathogens and pests were identified.

Opis:
Pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus, Linnaeus (1758) is a non-native fish species, which the largest population in Poland inhabits warm canal of a “Dolna Odra” Power Plant. Until now, the growth in length and weight and changes the gonad’s maturity of adults individual of this species were carried out. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of high water temperature on the seasonal changes in the length, weight, condition, and the number of sclerites, with particular emphasis on length (S0) at which in this species the scales start forming. The research material included 341 pumpkinseed individuals in age 0+ (305 ind.) and 1+ (36 ind.) caught during monthly catches (electrofishing). The fish was weighted (W, g) to the nearest 0.1 g, measured (TL, SL, mm) and their conditions was determined by the coefficient Fulton (K). In addition, number of sclerites (S) on scales and the time of setting up the annual ring were determinated. The biggest monthly increases in mean length - SL (more than 0.5 cm/month) and increases of mean weight W (above 0.7 g / month) in the fish were recorded in the months of highest thermals water (July, August) (ANOVA, p <0.001). The decrease of water temperature in the warm channel in the autumn and winter months, resulted in reduction of monthly growth of fish. Analysis of regression between length (SL) and the length of the scale radius (Po) took the form of a linear function: SL = 1.5813 + 3.1424 * Po (R = 0.91029, p = 0.0000) and showed that the length at which in this species the scales start forming is 1,58cm. Number of sclerites (S) on scales of juvenile pumpkinseed has grown at an annual cycle of 8.20 ± 0.78 (in June) to 27.37 ± 5.18 (in May of the following year). In April and May the fish were recorded already formed on scales a year ring and respectively 1.38 ± 0.55 and 3.40 ± 1.02 sclerites of the second year of life. Moreover, the number of sclerites (S) on pumpkinseed’s scales proportionally increased to the length of this species according to the formula: S = -0.8441 + 5.0880 * SL (R = 0.95682, p <0.001).
Materiał do badań stanowiły osobniki młodociane w wieku 0+ (305 szt.) i 1+ (36 sztuk.) złowione podczas prowadzenia comiesięcznych elektropołowów. ±0,78 (w czerwcu) do 27,37 szt.

The feeding ecology of the American crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii Gould, 1841 from brackish waters of the Baltic Sea was studied by analyses of the stomach repletion index (SRI) and stomach content with regard to sex, size and habitat (Dead Vistula River and the Gulf of Gdańsk). Neither the sex nor the size of an individual crab had a significant (P>0.05) influence on the SRI or on the diversity of food items found in the stomachs of R. harrisii. But the type of food consumed was significantly (P<0.05) dependent on the locality inhabited: the greater the biodiversity of the habitat, the richer the dietary composition. In Baltic coastal waters this species feeds on detritus, and also on animal and plant matter. Remains of Chlorophyta, Amphipoda, Ostracoda, Polychaeta, Gastropoda and Bivalvia were found in the stomachs of the specimens analysed.

Opis:
Montia linearis is a vascular plant originating from western North America. The expansion of this species has been observed for several decades. For the first time M. linearis was found in Europe in 1989. Further six populations were documented by 2004 within the continent: three in Poland, two in Denmark and one in Hungary. Apart from discovering a new population of M. linearis, we confirmed two out of the three previously known localities of the species in Poland. All the currently known populations of M. linearis occupied predominantly meadow habitats, especially intensively managed sites. Some individuals were also found in disturbed sites with bare soil. The studied species inhabited soils of various types with broad range of fertility as well as humidity. Montia linearis populations reached densities up to 87 individuals per 0.04 m2. The number of seeds produced by an individual was between 10 and 55 in 90% of the studied specimens, however much more fertile specimens were also observed. As the previously presented hypothesis of M. linearis dispersal with rail transport seemed not to be well supported, the connection between the M. linearis presence and cattle husbandry is considered. It is possible that the species can be transferred with living animals or manure. The species was able to survive for at least 26 years within once inhabited site. Further spread of M. linearis within Europe is highly probable. The aim of the study is to: (i) describe the current state of populations of M. linearis in Poland, (ii) provide information on habitat preferences and biology of the species, (iii) assess the invasiveness potential of M. linearis in Poland.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of several years investigations (2003-2007) on two invaders: the Himalayans Impatiens glandulifera and Asiatic Reynoutria japonica. The Sudety Mountains and their national parks are under strong pressure of both species, threatening the local vegetation. The four-year investigations have been carried out in field, glasshouse and in laboratory. Invasive species have their peculiar life histories which help them to occupy new areas. Those are above all the specific generative reproduction strategies (Impatiens) or vegetative reproduction strategies (Reynoutria). Both strategies secure the reproductive success and to capture more and more highly situated areas of the mountains. Very significant characteristics connected with the expansion of invaders is the excessively over and above the average production of seeds (Impatiens) and a huge annual increment aboveground biomass (Reynoutria). The investigated invasive species are probably not equipped with influence of allelopatic type as of greater importance is their competitive strength. The invaders can eliminate a part of the early spring flora belonging to the geophyte group and impoverish the regional biological diversity. Both the invasive plants enter also into some moist mountain forest communities.

Opis:
The morphology of pollen grains of 16 species from the Rosa L. genus were studied (i.e. R. agrestis, R. canina, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. inodora, R. jundzillii, R. kostrakiewiczii, R. majalis, R. micrantha, R. mollis, R. pendulina, R. rubiginosa, R. sherardii, R. tomentosa, R. villosa, and R. zalana). The material came from 16 native localities of those species in Poland. The measurements are based on at least 30-50 randomly selected, fully developed pollen grains per specimen. In total, 500 pollen grains were examined. They were analysed for 13 quantitative features of pollen grains and exine sculpturing and the following qualitative traits: outline, shape, "operculum" structure. The diagnostic features of pollen grains of studied species were: length of polar and equatorial axes and length of ectocolpi. The above-mentioned pollen grain morphological features make isolation of one species possible: R. gallica. R. gallica is distinguished for its highest values of the length of polar and equatorial axes, and the length of ectocolpi. The obtained analytical results of operculum and exine sculpture features, considered as diagnostic, corroborated only slightly their priority significance for the isolation of the examined species and sections. The collected data failed to confirm fully the current taxonomical division of the Rosa genus into sections (only section Gallicanae from R. gallica is isolated) as well as consanguinity relationships between the examined species from the Caninae section. On the dendrogram, both species closely related with each other as well as those from other developmental lines were found in the same group. These equivocal results are by no means surprising because the Caninae section is the most polymorphic group in the Rosa genus, and contemporary Caninae are of the nature of a swarm of R. canina hybrids as a link combining all taxons of the section.

Fusarium is a large fungal genus, but scientists who work with it continue to search for new species to help bridge perceived phylogenetic gaps and to assess the biogeography of species origin and distribution.  Potential new sources for species include collections made from plants and soil in native ecosystems and  ubsistence agriculture farms. These ecosystems are less likely to have suffered anthropomorphic changes and  may offer the best hope for identifying previously undescribed species and for obtaining reliable data on species distribution. In addition to new collections, new species also may result from the break-up of a number of  large species complexes that are held together primarily by   orphological similarities. The two approaches  are complementary and should collectively help to increase the number, diversity and quality of the species  known within the genus.

There are no original local yield tables for Douglas fir stands grown in Poland. In the presented study we attempted to answer the question whether it is possible to successfully use the German yield tables for Douglas fir developed by Bergel [1985]. Based on the data from these yield tables we developed the height growth model (site index curves) for Douglas fir in the form of the polymorphic equation with variable asymptotes. This model appeared to be, as expected, far better than the anamorphic model. We applied the elaborated equation for calculation of the site index for 63 randomly selected research plots located on the typical Douglas fir habitat types (fresh mixed broadleaved forest and fresh broadleaved forest) in western Poland. We concluded that the mean site index values are significantly higher in younger stands than in the older ones. To determine the reason for this phenomenon, we tested the resulting model using the published data from the permanent research plots. We found out that the pattern of site index changes with age varies for stands in different age classes. Moreover, we noticed, that regardless the age of the stand, in the recent decades there is the increasing height growth rate, which can be attributed to the change in environmental conditions. On the other hand, the analysis of the other characteristics of the sample plots revealed, that there is no significant relationship between site index values and site and plot location, as well as between the productivity level, expressed by the value of the EN coefficient, and age class, site and location of the stand. Bergel yield tables can be used in Polish conditions taking into account the age−dependency of the site index values.

The invasive Asiatic freshwater bivalve Corbicula fluminea is regarded as a pest in several countries including Brazil. Two water birds native to South America, the limpkin Aramus guarauna and the common gallinule Gallinula galeata, are herein recorded preying on C. fluminea in a pond of an urban park in South-eastern Brazil. The exotic clam is becoming increasingly common in the diet of both these water birds. This trend is likely due to its increasing population and the consequent rarity of the habitual prey (apple snails and native clams) for the mollusc-specialised limpkin, besides being an accessible animal protein source for the omnivorous gallinule.

Due to the maternal inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in Norway spruce, the spatial distribution of haplotype DNA allows insights into seed dispersal and artificial seed transfer. A total of 504 trees distributed all over Austria were genotyped, and 9 different haplotypes could be found. A geographical map of the haplotype variation pattern of Picea abies is presented.
