Opis:
The Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica (two of the four branches: the Early Piast Residence Ostrów Lednicki and the Wielkopolska Ethnographic Park in Dziekanowice) are located in central Wielkopolska [Greater Poland] on the eastern shore of Lake Lednica. It is an open-air museum that encompasses archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions. This paper presents the results of several years of research, which included the analyses of the functional and spatial structure of the museum, its composition and landscape relations. The conclusions from the research allowed for the formulation of guidelines and, consequently, the development of the concept of visiting a museum facility and shaping its space to meet the diverse needs of tourists and making the most of the potential of this space. The research demonstrated that spatial disintegration is one of the most significant problems of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica. The paper suggests therefore that functional and compositional relations should be created between individual areas, currently separated from each other. The presented concept is based on a zonal-nodal-linear system, constructed by distinctly organised and composed zones of varying purposes, four nodal points and four sightseeing routes. The proposed composition arrangement is supposed to bind the entire currently inhomogeneous museum space. The concept takes into account the diversity of tastes and needs of different groups of users, and at the same time indicates the use of the potential of the landscape. Individual means of expression used (elements of equipment, surfaces, greenery) are to inform and guide guests, encourage them to explore the museum space and read the content recorded in the landscape. The museum narration is carried out as part of a series of consecutive interiors of varied scale and composition, equipped with various architectural and plant elements. The concept also includes proposals for other activities in the field of landscape design, which plays the role of the content of the exhibition and its background in the case of openair museums. The article points out that the landscape background area should be protected in the spatial planning process and properly shaped using various methods and means of spatial planning and landscape architecture. The protection should cover all areas within the landscape background, in accordance with the designated visibility range. Ad-hoc actions aimed at the proper development of areas in the landscape background zone, without the need to introduce new legal regulations, are also possible. It was proposed that a curtain layout of greenery should be planted perpendicular to the axis of the view in order to obscure negative spatial accents in the areas adjacent to the Wielkopolska Ethnographic Park. Not only disharmonious structures should be covered, but also new view relations should be shaped and openings exposing the most attractive fragments of space, currently invisible, should be framed. For this purpose, it was proposed that part of the vegetation growing on the shore of Lake Lednica should be removed in order to create extensive views of the reservoir. It would also be beneficial to shape view openings to the surrounding farmlands, a characteristic spatial feature of the villages of Wielkopolska. The problem of shaping the space of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica discussed in this paper is in line with the current search for new solutions, increasing the readability and attractiveness of museums’ exhibitions. The currently observed globalisation processes, communication revolution and unlimited access to information create a new type of recipients. The recognition of their needs and expectations as well as the motives of their decisions and choices is necessary for the proper shaping of the museum space.

Opis:
Today, more than ever, audiences are surrounded by imaginary worlds in which a wide variety of products and activities can be fully explored through multiple media windows. Imaginary worlds allow members of the audience to enter vicariously in the narrative space, spending a certain amount of time in speculative and explorative activities, experiencing the ‘possible world’ through the stories set within it. According to this, it is possible to differentiate between story and storyworld. While ‘stories’ are self-enclosed arrangements of causal events that come to an end in a certain period of time, ‘storyworlds’ are mental constructions shared between recipients and authors in which new storylines can be developed. This paper aims to discuss the implication of world-building activity for the design practice. Considering narratives and world-making practices as a matter of design, this essay will tackle the following question: how can a designer use the creation of storyworlds in his practice to activate new perspectives on specific contexts? In doing so, the first part of the essay is a brief summary of how imaginary worlds have evolved through the decades. Then, the second part is devoted to the presentation of the so-called Storyworld Canvas, one of the narrative design tools developed in our research group in order to support both storytelling practice and storyworld creation. Finally, the paper describes the project Watchmen of the Nine with the aim of analysing its storyworld from the perspective of the design domain, considering storytelling and world-building activities as ways to enrich the design practice.

Many researchers argue that the analysis process of any narrative and biographical inquiry is a delicate, arduous and complex stage and requires creativity, advanced skills and the technique of the researcher. This research note, based on a research project carried out in Spain, makes a unique contribution to this debate by reflecting about the Cross-Narrative Model, whose father was Lewis (1973), introducing two concepts: Biographical Units and the Analysis Units. Furthermore, it describes the analysis process laying emphasis on the particular methodological challenges and possible benefits of using these units to build up a two-part biographical account. This research note concludes that the use of the Cross-Narrative Analysis model could be considered as a possible alternative to the on-going discussion on advancing the rigorous and resourcefulness narrative qualitative analysis endeavour.

Opis:
Escape rooms are increasingly popular all around the world. Due to their popularity, we are also seeing more variations in concept, form, and aim. For example, nowadays we can engage with physical, digital or mixed escape rooms. Escape rooms are also developed for a range of purposes beyond entertainment, including to broadcast a message, train, and/or exchange data. However, past research on escape rooms has focused mostly on analysing physical versions or on investigating if and how escape rooms can educate players. This paper aims to overcome these gaps by exploring how escape rooms (digital, physical or mixed) can be designed for a variety of purposes beyond entertainment. Hence, this paper offers two main contributions: a definition of escape rooms with a purpose and a framework that can be used to both design and analyse escape rooms with a purpose. The framework is initially implemented based on a literature review in the fields of serious games, escape rooms and puzzle design. Its efficacy is then tested through the analysis of three escape rooms with a purpose. Following this analysis, the framework is finalised to include the following key design elements: concept/idea; stakeholders (target players and others); purpose; goal/winning condition; equipment; theme; narrative (puzzle organisation and storytelling methods); puzzle design; and evaluation.

Opis:
The article is dedicated to the narrative space of D. Klus-Stańska’s book: Paradygmaty dydaktyki. Myśleć teorią o praktyce (Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN, 2018). The research perspective adopted in it is oriented towards the analysis of difficulties encountered in the practice of the written scientific text, the aim of which is to present educational constructs of different quality and at the same time to facilitate students’ navigation within their multiplicity. The study also assesses the educational procedures of the author, who experiments with the organization of a scientific text addressed to students and its graphic design. In the course of analyses, the specificity of the author’s textual techniques was identified, involving e.g. contextualisation of the languages described and their linguistic deconstruction, as well as intertextual exposition of educational narratives.

Opis:
Cel. Materiały i metody. Główną metodą badawczą była analiza literatury przedmiotu, uzupełniona analizą fragmentów narracji studentek i studentów uczestniczących w warsztatach biograficznych w trakcie pracy dydaktycznej nad metodami narracyjnymi/biograficznymi w ramach przedmiotu Poradnictwo edukacyjno-zawodowe i doradztwo karier. Wyniki. Wnioski.
Aim. This paper aims to capture the relevance of personal proto-histories to the design of future personal and working life. Materials and methods. Methodologically, the study chiefly relies on a subject literature analysis and the examination of selected passages from the narratives of students who attended biographical workshops as part of coursework on narrative methods in career counselling. Results. The study presents a selection of illustrative examples of personal proto-histories/proto-stories that emerged in biographical workshops held as part of coursework in two MA programmes: one in Career Counselling and Career Coaching and the other in Counselling and Psychoeducational Assistance. Students’ narratives illuminate the relevance of personal and family narratives to their future life designs. Conclusion. Designing one’s future life is part of a larger process of individual identity formation. Identity results from mediations between individuals’ past, present and anticipated future. Because human life is a story/narrative, it contains references to these three temporal perspectives. Notably, individual stories also have their proto-stories/proto-histories which are developed in parental visions and plans from before the children’s birth and in the expectations that parents develop for and of their children. Such proto-stories contribute to the family narrative/story and may thus affect future designs.

Opis:
The article deals with the issue of strategy of historicizing film narrative and the world presented on a screen in historical cinema. It shows with what elements the film narrative and the world presented on a screen are historicized. In the introduction of the article, the most important analytical categories such as historical film and strategies of historicizing film narrative and the world presented on a screen are conceptualized. Historical film is defined as an operational category requiring conceptualization relativized to a cultural context of its use. A historical film is described as a screening work covering various genological structures, the subject of which relates to the past. The strategies of historicizing the film narrative and the film world presented on a screen are understood as numerous ways of equipping the film with various signs of historicity that allow the viewer/researcher to get an impression of the screen effect of a time shift towards the past. In the following parts of the article, the signs of historicity that have the function of historicizing the film narrative and the world presented on a screen are analyzed on the examples of various films covering a wide spectrum of history from ancient times to the present day. The Signs of historicity include the following elements: (1) scenery, stage design, costumes; (2) language; (3) music; (4) characterization; (5) events and characters. Strategies of historicizing the world presented on a screen and film narrative, which have been analyzed in the article, play a particularly important role in the so-called classic films made in the aesthetics of zero style cinema.
