Opis:
Nano-sized yttria (Y2O3) powders were synthesized by a polymer solution route using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an organic carrier. The PVA polymer affected the dispersion of yttrium ions in precursor sol. In this study, three kinds of PVA polymer (different molecular weight) were applied for synthesis of yttria powder. The PVA type as well as calcination temperature had a strongly influence on the particle morphology. Single crystal nano wire particles were observed at the temperature of polymer burn out range and the size was dependent on the PVA type. The stable, fully crystallized yttria powder was obtained through the calcination at 800°C for 1 h. The yttria powder prepared with the high weight PVA (MW: 153,000) revealed a particle size of 30 nm with a surface area of 18.8 m2/g.

Opis:
The amorphous and nanocrystalline (Fe1 xCox)85.4Zr6.8 yMyB6.8Cu1 (x = 0 or 0.1, y = 0 or 1, M = Mo, Nb or Nd) alloys were studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy. We have stated that after the low temperature annealing of the samples the decrease of the average hyperfine field due to the Invar effect was observed. This effect is associated with the increase of atom packing density after the annealing of the samples, which may lead to the noncolinear spin state in some regions. This phenomenon was completely suppressed after substitution of 10% of Fe atoms by Co atoms. At early stages of crystallization of the Fe85.4Zr6.8 yMyB6.8Cu1 (y = 0 or 1, M = Mo, Nb or Nd) alloys, the interfacial zone is poor in iron due to diffusion of Zr, B, Nb, Mo and Nd atoms outside regions where á-Fe fine grains are created. However, the iron content in the amorphous matrix is the same as in the as-quenched state. The iron concentration in the interfacial zone of the nanocrystalline alloys obtained by the accumulative annealing depends on the chemical composition of the as-quenched samples. In the nanocrystalline samples obtained by two-step annealing, the iron content in the interfacial layer is higher than in the amorphous matrix.

The microstructure and ordering of alfa-FeCo phase of the nanocrystalline Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 6, 25 or 41.5) alloys were investigated. We have stated that á-FeCo phase is atomically ordered in the Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 25 or 41.5) samples crystallized by the heat treatment in a furnace. However, after flash annealing (by current or laser) that phase is disordered. Moreover, we have found that Co concentration in the crystalline alfa-FeCo phase strongly depends on Co content in the as-quenched ribbons. The annealing conditions influence also the grain diameter of the crystalline phase. In the nanocrystalline alloys obtained by a flash annealing of the amorphous ribbons finer grains are present.

The microstructure of amorphous and nanocrystalline Fe42.7Co42.7Zr6.8-xNbxB6.8Cu1 (x = 0 or 1) alloys was investigated. We have stated that the nanocrystalline samples consist of the crystalline alfa-FeCo grains about 8 nm in diameter embedded in an amorphous matrix which is rich in cobalt. From Mössbauer spectroscopy studies we have found that the crystalline alfa-FeCo phase in the nanocrystalline samples obtained by the conventional annealing is atomically ordered. Moreover, the order degree depends on the annealing time. As for the samples partially crystallized during rapid quenching, the crystalline alfa-FeCo phase is atomically disordered.

In the present study, the corrosion behaviors of amorphous-nanocrystalline Ni50Ti50 shape memory alloy with different crystallite sizes were investigated. The Ni50Ti50 homogenized specimens were hot rolled and annealed at 950°C. Thereafter, the nanocrystalline Ni50Ti50 specimens with different crystalline sizes in the range of 40-350 nm were prepared by cold rolling and annealing at temperature range of 400 to 900°C. The corrosion resistance of Ni50Ti50 specimen with coarse grain size has significantly increased after cold rolling as a result of the formation of amorphous-nanocrystalline structure. The amorphous and nanocrystalline (with the crystallite size of about 40 nm) Ni50Ti50 samples exhibited the best corrosion resistance in the 5% HCl electrolyte with the corrosion potential and corrosion current density of about –197 mV and 2.34×10-6 A/cm2, respectively. This effect can be attributed to the higher density of crystalline defects in amorphous and nanocrystalline structures to quickly form protective films on the surface.

The mechanical properties of titanium Grade 2 subjected to the hydrostatic extrusion technique (HE) were investigated. The hydrostatic extrusion technique is a method which refines the titanium grains to a nano-metric size. Compared with coarse grained titanium (CG-Ti), nanocrystalline titanium (NC-Ti) is characterized by a much higher yield stress, tensile strength and microhardness. The yield stress of NC-Ti determined in tensile tests is higher than that measured in compression test. The Young modulus of NC-Ti is slightly lower than that of CG-Ti.

Opis:
Pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) is a semiconductor with numerous potential applications. Low-grade ilmenite ore has been used as an inexpensive source of Fe and Ti for preparation of Pseudobrookite. Ilmenite was first leached with 20% hydrochloric acid for 3 h at 70°C. Co-precipitation of soluble Fe and Ti from the rich filtrate was carried out at pH ≥ 9.1 followed by calcination at different temperatures (900-1300oC) for 2 h. X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) showed that a single-phase nanocrystalline pseudobrookite powder was produced. The pH was a critical parameter for the evolution of formation the different sizes, structural morphology, and the magnetic properties of the product. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that particles synthesized at pH 11.2 contained more agglomerations and were more porous than those synthesized at pH 9.1. As the calcination temperature increases, the Fe2TiO5 changes from a small rod-like structure to an elongated rod-like structure, and finally to interconnected aggregated crystals. The magnetization of the synthesized Fe2TiO5 was measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and was found steadily increase with increasing calcination temperature from 1000 (≈9 emu/g) to 1300°C (16 emu/g). Such a large saturation of magnetization might be due to the high phase purity and well-defined crystallinity of Fe2TiO5.

Opis:
In recent years, a number of methods for refining the structure of metals by severe plastic deformation (SPD) have been developed. Some of those methods permit grain refinement to a nanometric level. These methods include, among others, high pressure torsion (HPT), equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and hydrostatic extrusion (HE). The aim of this paper was a more detailed description of these methods and presentation of exemplary applications of these methods for structure refinement and improvement of mechanical properties of chosen materials. The results obtained in the present study show that the microstructures of the materials subjected to SPD studied in this work displayed considerable refinement, characterised by the formation of nanosized grains. Such a refinement resulted in increased tensile strength and hardness of the SPD materials studied in this work. In view of the results obtained on a large number of metals and alloys, a conclusion can be drawn that SPD could become an attractive way of processing materials for variety of applications.

To obtain a series of nanocrystalline samples with small grains of different sizes, a special non- -isothermal annealing procedure of an initially amorphous ribbon was applied. In the case of samples with a significant amount of crystallites, a high field (about 27.5 T) component of continuous part of the hyperfine field distribution was found that could be attributed to boundary regions between the grains and rest of the sample. The existence of the surface effects was confirmed in the magnetostrictive experiment.

Ternary Co-Fe-Ni alloys were prepared from the elemental powders by the mechanical alloying method. Structural properties and hyperfine interactions parameters were determined using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction proved that during milling Co-Fe-based solid solutions with b.c.c. lattice were formed in the case of Co40Fe40Ni20 and Co50Fe40Ni10 alloys, while for Co52Fe26Ni22 and Co65Fe23Ni12 compositions Co-Ni-based solid solutions with f.c.c. lattice were obtained. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed similar values of the average hyperfine magnetic fields for all the alloys. These values corresponded to the different surroundings of 57Fe isotopes by Co, Fe and Ni atoms, depending on the chemical composition of the alloy. The possible atomic configurations around 57Fe isotopes were discussed on the basis of the local environment model under the assumption that only the first nearest neighbours contribute to the hyperfine magnetic field at 57Fe site.

Structure and hyperfine interactions of amorphous and nanocrystalline FINEMET were investigated by means of Mössbauer spectrometry. It was found that substitution of x iron atoms with aluminum ones causes changes in the properties of both amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys as well as in the structure of individual phases. The reduction of hyperfine magnetic field caused by atom substitution is a non-linear function of x, unlike the linear dependence expected because of dilution. Temperature studies reveal a double magnetic phase transition at 250°C and 330°C as well as point to the variety of phases in the examined material.

Opis:
Cu-Sn alloys have been known as bronze since ancient times and widely used as electrode materials, ornaments, tableware and musical instruments. Cu-22Sn alloy fabrication by hot forging process is a Korean traditional forged high-tin bronze. The tin content is 22 percent, which is more than twice that of bronze ware traditionally used in China and the West. Copper and tin have a carbon solubility of several ppm at room temperature, making Cu-Sn-C alloys difficult to manufacture by conventional casting methods. Research on the production of carbon-added copper alloys has used a manufacturing method that is different from the conventional casting method. In this study, Cu-22Sn-xC alloy was fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The carbon solubility was confirmed in Cu-Sn alloy through mechanical alloying. The lattice parameter increased from A0 to C2, and then decreased from C4. The microstructural characteristics of sintered alloys were determined using X-ray diffraction and microscopic analysis. As a result of comparing the hardness of Cu-22Sn alloys manufactured by conventional rolling, casting, and forging and Cu-22Sn-xC alloy by sintered powder metallugy, B0 sintered alloy was the highest at about 110.9 HRB.

Opis:
Mössbauer spectra and thermomagnetic curves for the Fe86-xMxZr7Nb2Cu1B4 (M = Co, Ni, CoCr, and Cr, x = 0 or 6) alloys in the as-quenched state and after the accumulative annealing in the temperature range 600–800 K for 10 min are investigated. The parent Fe86Zr7Nb2Cu1B4 amorphous alloy is paramagnetic at room temperature, and substitution of 6 at.% of Fe by Co, Ni, and CoCr changes the magnetic structure – the alloys become ferromagnetic, whereas replacing 6 at.% of Fe with Cr preserves the paramagnetic state. After the heat treatment at 600 K, the decrease of the average hyperfi ne fi eld induction, as compared to the as-quenched state, is observed due to the invar effect. After this annealing, the Curie temperature for all investigated alloys decreases. The accumulative annealing up to 800 K leads to the partial crystallization; α-Fe or α-FeCo grains with diameters in the range of 12–30 nm in the residual amorphous matrix appear.

Opis:
In this paper, the nanocrystalline porous silicon (PS) films are prepared by electrochemical etching of p-type silicon wafer with current density (15 mA/cm2) and etching times on the formation nanosized pore array with a dimension of around different etching time. The films were characterized by the measurement of XRD, FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy properties (AFM). We have estimated crystallites size from X-Ray diffraction about nano scale for porous silicon and Atomic Force microscopy confirms the nanometric size Chemical fictionalization during the electrochemical etching show on the surface chemical composition of PS. The etching possesses inhomogeneous microstructures that contain a -Si clusters (Si3–Si–H) dispersed in amorphous silica matrix. From the FTIR analyses showed that the Si dangling bonds of the as-prepared PS layer have large amount of Hydrogen to form weak Si–H bonds. The atomic force microscopy investigation shows the rough silicon surface, with increasing etching process (current density and etching time) porous structure nucleates which leads to an increase in the depth and width (diameter) of surface pits. Consequently, the surface roughness also increase.

Opis:
The present study, aims to investigate the effect of minor Zr and Nb alloying on soft magnetic and electrical properties of Fe86 (Zrx Nb1-x )7B6 Cu1 (x=1, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25) alloys. The investigated alloys were prepared through the melt spinning process. Within the examined compositional range (Nb up to 5.25 at%, respectively), the soft magnetic properties and electrical resistivity of the alloys continuously increase with increasing Nb content. However increasing the Nb content further decreases such properties. We could confirm the influence of ratio of Zr and Nb on grain growth and crystallization fraction during crystallization by using the soft magnetic properties and electrical properties.

Opis:
Nanocrystalline Fe80–x–yCoxNiyCu1Nb3Si4B12 alloys were prepared by the annealing of amorphous ribbons. Primary crystallization of the alloys annealed at temperatures of between 500 and 550°C was studied by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetic properties of the alloys were investigated using a hysteresis loop tracer and vibrating sample magnetometer. The annealed ribbons are composed of a two-phase nanostructure consisting of bcc Fe-based grains embedded in an amorphous matrix. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) measurements reveal a more advanced crystallization process in the surface layers when compared with the volume of the ribbons. The degree of saturation magnetization of the nanocrystalline alloys is of about 1.5 T. The coercive fi eld varies from 1.0 to 6.5 A/m and peaks at an annealing temperature of 525°C. Magnetic softening of the nanocrystalline alloys observed after annealing at 550°C is correlated with a volume fraction of the nanocrystalline bcc phase.

Opis:
The austenitic stability and strain-induced martensitic transformation behavior of a nanocrystalline FeNiCrMoC alloy were investigated. The alloy was fabricated by high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. The phase fraction and grain size were measured using X-ray diffraction. The grain sizes of the milled powder and the sintered alloy were confirmed to be on the order of several nanometers. The variation in the austenite fraction according to compressive deformation was measured, and the austenite stability and strain-induced martensitic transformation behavior were calculated. The hardness was measured to evaluate the mechanical properties according to compression deformation, which confirmed that the hardness increased to 64.03 HRC when compressed up to 30%.
