Opis:
The aim of the research was to establish whether the children between the ages of 7 and 10 years, attending Grades 1-4 of music oriented and general education classes, suffered from posture defects. The research material included 214 children aged 7-11 of the Primary School Complex No. 2 in Szczecin. There were 101 children examined in the music oriented classes, including 51 (50,5 %) girls and 50 (49,5 %) boys. In the school year 2006/2007, the research was conducted twice, including the same research material – first in September 2006, second in June 2007 accordingly. Body surface topography method, based on the technique of spatial photogrammetry, was used to evaluate body posture. The research included the analysis of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angle in the sagittal plane. The results of independent research showed that proper posture in the sagittal plane was present in 62% girls and 71% boys from music oriented classes, as well as 73% and 75% in controls accordingly. Rounded back was characteristic for 31% girls and 25% boys from music oriented classes, as well as 14% and 16% in controls. Flat back was visible in 6% female musicians and 12% controls, with 4% boys and 13% controls accordingly. Based on the conducted research, the following results were formulated: 1. Physiological spinal curvatures of children in music oriented classes were more serious in comparison with peer controls. 2. Posture defects were more common in girls in music oriented classes, compared to controls. 3. The incidence of posture defects in boys in music oriented classes and controls was parallel. 4. The national curriculum program of study for PE in music oriented classes should be modified and complemented with exercises strengthening trunk muscles and increasing the range of motion in shoulder and pelvic girdles.

Opis:
The musical milieu raises a number of challenges for artists. Coping with these depends not only on the level of musical abilities but also on a number of personal skills. The diverse styles of music education and the expectations set for musicians performing various music genres have inspired research exploring the differences between classical and jazz musicians. Of the psychological areas important for functioning effectively as a musician, stress management styles and social skills have been examined in this study. It was assumed that the genre of publicly performed music, and thus the different modes of music education in the field of classical and jazz music performance, can cause significant differences in the psychological functioning of musicians. Of the 73 musicians who participated in the study, 38 were classical musicians and 35 were jazz musicians. The jazz musicians revealed a significantly higher level of social competence in terms of social exposure compared to the classical musicians. There were no differences in the style of coping with stress between the two groups. The results of the study might inspire psychologists working with musicians to plan therapeutic programs aimed at psychological preparation for public performances, with the specificity of musical genres taken into account. Future research may investigate the extent temperament and personality of musicians representing different specialties influence their stress coping strategies and social skills.

The aim of the study was an evaluation of different pattern of auditory processing lateralization in musicians and non-musicians. 41 people aged 20-46 participated in the experiment, from which two research groups were selected: musicians ‒ instrumentalists professionally active (N: 21) and non-musicians (N: 20). All of them were right-handed. The dichotic listening test (Kurkowski 2007) was used to assess the laterality of external stimuli. The examination showed the superiority of right-ear perception or binaural speech processing. In the study of non-focused attention, musicians achieved a similar rate of correct responses for the left and right ear, which indicates binaural processing, where they gave more correct responses for the left ear and fewer correct responses for the right ear than non-musicians. The difference between the groups is statistically significant. In the study focused on the right ear, both groups obtained similar high scores. In the left-ear study the musicians gave more correct responses from the perception of stimuli to the left ear than non-musicians. This research confirmed different pattern of auditory processing lateralization in musicians and non-musicians. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most musicians working at the royal and aristocratic courts enjoyed good status despite the difficult political and economic situation of the Polish Common Wealth in the late 16th and 17th centuries. The height of the status of court musicians depended among others on their place of employment, origin, sex, professional roles and musical specialty. This article focuses on the relationship between the status of the musicians and their origin, sex, workplace and salaries. We compared court musicians’ salaries to demonstrate differences in their material status. The few preserved information about the salaries of the Polish court musicians was analyzed in this study. These were wages of the royal musicians and wages of the musicians employed at the courts of Leon Lew Sapieha, Zamoyscy, prince Dominik Ostrogski-Zasławski and hetman Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski. The results are presented descriptively and in the table and graph.

The following study focuses on individual differences between musicians who play solo (performing individually or as leaders), and musicians performing as part of a chamber ensemble, band, choir, orchestra, etc. We predicted that soloists would be higher on grandiose narcissism and self-efficacy. The results showed that soloists (n = 59) not only were higher on narcissism, but also had higher self-efficacy scores than musicians who perform in ensembles (n = 65). However, soloist and band players are not different in narcissism and self-efficacy when the other trait is controlled, which indicates that common features of both traits differentiate solo and band musicians. Results raise further questions on what factors affect the development of a musician’s career path.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to identify the changes, based on the biographies of selected women-musicians, which affected traditional musical culture from the strict adherence to roles and functions for both genders to the total collapse of these barriers. There are no observations concerning women-musicians in the XIX century or in the centuries before, neither in Polish ethnography nor in the ethomusicological literature. Women probably played musical instruments, but only at home or while tending domestic animals, however there is a lack of any source confirmation of public performances of women musicians. On account of the rare literature on the topic of gender studies in the field of Polish traditional music and the lack of the gender-thread in the remaining ethnomusicological literature, information on the topic of the current position of women-musicians was gathered first of all during interviews with them and with their families. The analysis is related to the way they speak about their own activities, performances, experiences. The author refers to opinions of only some selected interviewees, the most characteristic of particular generations. The first generation is represented by women born near the end of the XIX century, the second by women born before World War II, the third by women born directly after World War II. Women born after the 50’s and 60’s of the XX century are part of the fourth generation, because at that time the differences in the gender situation had become less apparent.

The article is a contribution to the exploration of history of Polish musical culture of the Renaissance and the Baroque period. Recognition of elementary forms of social organisation leads to understanding of the prevailing social and economical relations in those times. This article is one of the first in this topic, therefore it starts with very basic issues. A musicians guild existed in Cracow from 16th to 18th century. The article presents its history and organisation on the basis of statutes and municipal documents analysis. Simultaneously, it raises questions about circumstances of its creation and termination, welded duties and repertoire. The author questions the character of discussed association, considering to what extent it was a guild and a confraternity. The aim of the publication is to present to the reader a coherent picture of the guild, which could provide a starting point for further research.

The major aim of the research is to analyse the type and complexity of emotions which adolescent musicians experience before giving a solo music performance. Another aim is to explore the function of these emotions for performance quality. Just before a school concert, students filled out The UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist (UMACL). Right after the performance, both the performing students and competent referees used The Performance Evaluation Scale. The results show that musicians’ pre-performance emotional state is dominated by ambivalent emotions of hope and sadness, as well as joy and anxiety. As a result of a cluster analysis, six clusters were obtained which defined emotional states before the performance: high music performance anxiety, moderate music performance anxiety, calm, mixed emotions, joy with background fatigue, and excitement. The findings show the functional significance of positive emotions and mixed emotions for performance quality.

In this study, change in A-weighted and 1/3-octave sound pressure levels (SPLs) was used to assess the influence of wearing earplugs by musicians on their musical performances. Seven soloists and 3 music assembles performed 4 pieces of music with musician’s earplugs donned and doffed. They used silicon custom moulded earplugs with acoustic filters designed to attenuate sound by 9, 15 or 25 dB. Results showed that the use of earplugs affected the sound level and the spectrum of played sounds. This effect was the greatest for brass players. The difference between SPLs in high-frequency 1/3-octave bands and A-weighted SPLs with and without earplugs exceeded 5 and 15 dB, respectively. Similar changes for woodwind, percussion and string instruments were less noticeable than for brass instruments; they were more than 5 dB for 1/3-octave spectra and no more than 2 dB for A-weighted SPL.

Opis:
In this paper, we discuss the issue of hearing damage caused by noise in classical musicians. Long-term exposure to highintensity sounds leads to degenerative changes at the level of the cochlea and then in the higher parts of the auditory canal. This is particularly unfavorable for musicians because an efficient hearing organ is necessary for them to perform their daily work. The risk of hearing damage depends on noise parameters and intrinsic factors referred to as individual noise sensitivity. Not all musicians are exposed to sounds that exceed the acceptable level. However, most of them work at noise levels that are close to or above the acceptable safety limit, thus posing a health threat. In addition to hearing threshold elevation, tinnitus, hyperacusis, and diplacusis may result following many years of exposure to high-intensity acoustic stimuli. Although the differences between the hearing thresholds for instrumentalists and members of the unexposed population are not large, researchers emphasize the need to recognize musicians as a risk group and to apply appropriate prevention. One of the methods to prevent hearing damage is to use ear protectors, which, although effectively reduce exposure, are not widely used by instrumentalists as they impede auditory control over the sounds produced by the instrument. In addition, multifaceted prevention programs and various techniques to minimize exposure are used, such as the proper placement of loud instruments in an orchestra.

The aim of the research was to establish the motor efficiency of boys between the ages of 7 and 10 years, attending Grades 1-4 of music oriented and general education classes. The research material included 106 boys aged 7-10 of the Primary School Complex No. 2 in Szczecin. There were 50 children examined in the music oriented classes, and 56 in control group. The research was conducted twice in the school year 2006/2007, including the same research material – first in September 2006, second in June 2007 accordingly. To evaluate the level of motor skills the EUROFIT European Fitness Test was used. Test results were statistically analyzed. The Utenberger’s test resulted in statistically significant better results of boys from the Grade 1 of control group (C) compared to their peers from Grade 1 of music oriented classes. In research II, only boys of Grades 1-2 M had statistically significant results improvement in the Utenberger’s test in comparison with research I. In research II, male students of Grades 1, 2, 3 M acquired statistically significant better results in the speed test of the upper limb than their peers of Grades 1 C, 2 C, 4 C. Moreover, in study II the subjected individuals of Grades 1 M, 2 M, 4 M and 4 C obtained statistically significant increase in their results in comparison with study I. Trunk flexibility of male students from music-oriented classes and control group was in line; the same was true for the jump test. In study II, trunk flexibility and endurance in jumping insignificantly improved in all examined classes. In the study, boys from Grade 4 M, obtained statistically more significant average hand strength results compared to their peers from Grade 4 C. In study II, boys from Grades 1 and 2 M obtained statistically significantly lower average values in this test in comparison with boys from Grades 1 and 2 C. In study II, unlike in study 1, there was a statistically significant improvement in the test results only in boys from Grades 3 and 4 M. In contrary, there was a statistically significant improvement of hand strength results in all grades of control groups compared to study I. In trunk flexibility test, boys from Grade 1 M had statistically lower mean values than boys from Grade 1 C. In the same study, boys from grades 3 and 4 M had statistically significantly higher average values than their peers from Grades 3 and 4 C. In study II, statistically significant differences were found between Grades 3 M and 3 P as well as between 4 M and 4 P. In study II, in Grades 1 C and 2 M, there was a statistically significant results improvement compared to study I. Functional capacity of boys from all subjected classes was similar in both studies. In study II, statistically significant improvement in this test was found only in Grade 2 M. In agility fitness test, in study II, boys from Grade 4 M had statistically significantly better results opposed to Grade 4 C. It turned out that boys from grades 1 M, 2 M, and 3 C, had statistically significant results improvement in study II compared to study I. Based on the conducted studies, the following conclusions have been formulated: 1. Motor efficiency of boys from music-oriented as well as control classes was comparable. 2. Practicing musical instruments at the early education stage did not have any significant influence on the general motor efficiency of male pupils. 3. As part of preventive measures of degenerative overload changes of the motor system in music-oriented classes, the national curriculum program of study for PE should be modified and supplemented with exercises strengthening trunk muscles and increasing the range of motion in the shoulder and pelvic girdles.

This paper investigates attachment themes in the life history narratives of professional orchestral musicians and their relationship with music performance anxiety (MPA). Narrative accounts derived from open-ended in-depth interviews of ten professional musicians were analysed from an attachment perspective using content and thematic analysis. We hypothesized that the performance setting re-triggers unprocessed feelings related to early attachment experiences, especially when traumatic, and that defensive manoeuvres against their re-emergence into consciousness are activated. The interviews identified early relational trauma as a relevant etiological factor in the MPA-symptomatic of the musicians studied. A case is made for the addition of an attachment-informed life-course model rather than a purely symptomatic approach to understanding and treating severe MPA and other intra-personal psychodynamics of performing musicians.
