We present a countable infinite chain of conditions which are essentially weaker then congruence modularity (with exception of first two). For varieties of algebras, the third of these conditions, the so called 4-submodularity, is equivalent to congruence modularity. This is not true for single algebras in general. In this paper we present the multicommodity auction model BCBT-I that allocates indivisible network resources among bidders. The approach can be considered as a generalization of the basic multicommodity model for balancing communication bandwidth trade (BCBT). The BCBT model assumes that offers concerning inter-node links and point-to-point bandwidth demands can be realized partially. However, in the real-world trade there might be a need to include capacity modularity in the market balancing process. Thus we state the model for balancing communication bandwidth trade that takes into account the indivisibility of traded bandwidth modules. This requires to solve a mixed integer problem and increases computational complexity. Furthermore, the pricing issue appears nontrivial, as the dual prices cannot be longer used to set fair, competitive market prices. For clearing the market, we examine the multicommodity pricing mechanizm based on differentiation of buy and sell market prices.

Opis:
Constructing dependency relations, in particular subject-verb agreement, in languages in which verbs may occupy the final position in the sentence, requires a combination of newly appearing lexical items with the existing context, such that it extends beyond the limits of the phrase. New words can be integrated only if the part of the sentence that has already been processed remains in a state of activation, being open to receive new elements. This article focuses on the question of the specificity for the domain of linguistic knowledge of the working memory, as the cognitive system in which representations are temporarily stored and manipulated.

Modular man – an analysis of brain and body adaptation to the technology in the context of the theories of extended mind and embodied cognitionThe ability to adapt to new and ever changing environment has always been one of the primary human skills. In fact, the capacity of using tools has been of upmost importance. The advancement of technology greatly improved the process of adaptation. It had a remarkable impact on the development of human nature, stepping into its inner structure. The technological evolution of mankind has been happening right before our eyes. People are becoming symbiotic with machines, and to various extents becoming cyborgs themselves. The main point of interest of this paper is to show how the embodied cognition theory and the extended mind theory are able to illustrate the phenomenon of cyborgization. Moreover, we consider how the concepts related to the modular structure of mind and body explain the technological adaptation of humans.

This paper presents a modular and scalable power electronics concept for motor control with continuous output voltage. In contrast to multilevel concepts, modules with continuous output voltage are connected in series. The continuous output voltage of each module is obtained by using gallium nitride (GaN) high electron motility transistor (HEMT)s as switches inside the modules with a switching frequency in the range between 500 kHz and 1 MHz. Due to this high switching frequency a LC filter is integrated into the module resulting in a continuous output voltage. A main topic of the paper is the active damping of this LC output filter for each module and the analysis of the series connection of the damping behaviour. The results are illustrated with simulations and measurements.

Modularity is a feature of most small, medium and large–scale living organisms that has evolved over many years of evolution. A lot of artificial systems are also modular, however, in this case, the modularity is the most frequently a consequence of a handmade design process. Modular systems that emerge automatically, as a result of a learning process, are very rare. What is more, we do not know mechanisms which result in modularity. The main goal of the paper is to continue the work of other researchers on the origins of modularity, which is a form of optimal organization of matter, and the mechanisms that led to the spontaneous formation of modular living forms in the process of evolution in response to limited resources and environmental variability. The paper focuses on artificial neural networks and proposes a number of mechanisms operating at the genetic level, both those borrowed from the natural world and those designed by hand, the use of which may lead to network modularity and hopefully to an increase in their effectiveness. In addition, the influence of external factors on the shape of the networks, such as the variability of tasks and the conditions in which these tasks are performed, is also analyzed. The analysis is performed using the Hill Climb Assembler Encoding constructive neuro-evolutionary algorithm. The algorithm was extended with various module-oriented mechanisms and tested under various conditions. The aim of the tests was to investigate how individual mechanisms involved in the evolutionary process and factors external to this process affect modularity and efficiency of neural networks.

Artykuł inicjuje opis ewolucji złożoności, jej istoty i typów. Uwzględniono charakterystykę m.in. złożoności epistemologicznej, dynamicznej, obliczeniowej. W dalszym ciągu rozważań ujęto opis ewolucji podejścia systemowego, uwzględniając kontekst opanowywania złożoności. Następnie rozważania skierowano na problematykę sterowania. Samosterowanie i modularność uznano za przesłanki opanowania złożoności w systemie globalnym. Najistotniejsze okazało się tu zaistnienie absorberów. Do absorberów zaliczono wartości zidentyfikowane w ramach systemu. Podmiotowość agentów wyznacza ramy dla konstytuowania się absorberów. Odwołując się do kategorii podmiotowości agenta i kierując się jego refleksyjnością oraz inercją, wskazano różne warianty konstytuowania się modułów działania jako efektów samosterowania.
The paper begins with an overview of complexity evolution, its nature and types. The author discusses e.g. the characteristics of epistemological, dynamic and computational complexity. Next, he describes the evolution of the system approach in the context of complexity mastering. He then focuses on the problem of control. Self-control and modularity are considered as the conditions of complexity control in a global system. To master complexity, one needs absorbers, i.e. values identified within the system. A framework in which absorbers can be created is provided by the agents’ subjectivity. Different variants of modules have been identified with reference to agent subjectivity, and his or her reflexivity and inertia.

In this article we review the discussion over the thesis that language serves as an integrator of contents coming from different cognitive modules. After presenting the theoretical considerations, we examine two strands of empirical research that tested the hypothesis—spatial cognition and mathematical cognition. The idea shared by both of them is that each is composed of two separate modules processing information of a specific kind. For spatial thinking these are geometric information about the location of the object and the information about the object’s properties such as color or size. For mathematical thinking, they are the absolute representation of small numbers and the approximate representation of numerosities. Language is said to integrate the two kinds of information within each of these domains, which the reviewed data demonstrates. In the final part of the paper, we offer some comments on the theoretical side of the discussion.
W niniejszym artykule dokonujemy przeglądu badań z zakresu psychologii poznawczej, które skupiają się na hipotezie języka jako integratora treści zaczerpniętych z oddzielnych modułów poznawczych. W pierwszej kolejności przedstawiamy teoretyczną stronę badań, a następnie przechodzimy do prezentacji dwóch obszarów badan empirycznych eksplorujących hipotezę języka jako integratora treści. Punktem wyjścia tych badań jest fakt, że w obydwu przypadkach mamy do czynienia z dwoma rodzajami informacji, przetwarzanych przez dwa oddzielne moduły. Dla myślenia przestrzennego są to informacja geometryczna na temat lokacji przedmiotu w przestrzeni oraz informacja na temat właściwości inherentnych przedmiotowi, takich jak kolor czy wielkość. W przypadku matematycznego myślenia, dwa moduły przetwarzają kolejno informację na temat absolutnych ale małych ilości oraz przybliżonych wielkości. Celem badań w tych dwóch obszarach jest wykazanie, że język jest koniecznym warunkiem ku temu, aby informacja z obydwu modułów została zintegrowana. W końcowej części artykułu oferujemy kilka komentarzy na temat teoretycznej strony przedstawionych badań.

The text, a continuation of studies regarding to minimalistic tendencies in architecture of one-family house, presents next to simplicity and emptiness the chapter entitled order -that reflects isolated ideas and features. Houses are subordinated to primary ordering principle – symmetry or repetition, modularity regarding to volumes, elevations and plans. In these objects composition is ruled by geometric forms and numerical relations. Universal order stands in contrast with chaos and excess.

Stosując systemy regułowe, można wyróżnić dwie klasy problemów: efektywność procesu projektowania oraz wydajność procesu uruchamiania. Niniejszy artykuł przeglądowo opisuje metody projektowania reguł opracowane w Katedrze Automatyki AGH pod kątem rozwiązywania ww. problemów. Proponowane podejścia opierają się w dużej mierze na modularyzacji bazy wiedzy i odpowiedniej jej wizualizacji. Przedstawiono ich ewolucję, jak również wyniki najnowszych badań dotyczących wnioskowania kontekstowego.
There are two common issues while dealing with rules and rule-based systems. These are efficiency of the design process and performance of rule interpretation. This paper discusses briefly several design approaches developed at the Department of Automatics, AGH which tackle these issues. The proposed solutions are mainly based on modularization and appropriate visualization of the knowledge base being designed. Evolution of selected approaches and results of recent research regarding application of context-based reasoning are presented as well.

In this paper, we describe the design and analysis of a Soft Cubic Module (SCM) with a single internal pneumatically actuated chamber. The actuation chamber’s shape, size and, orientation have been evaluated to realize a soft robotic actuator which can be further employed for the development of modular soft robotic systems. SCM can be easily manufactured through the molding process and it is composed of single soft material, the silicone polymer. Its external shape allows utilization of this module as a single block actuator as well as makes it easy to combine multiple SCM modules to build multiunit soft robotic systems. We consider it as our first tool to investigate whether the SCM scheme is sufficient to build soft robots which would be able to perform certain given tasks in various configurations like a soft gripper, bio-mimetic crawling mechanism or multi-axis manipulator. So far, the results obtained are encouraging in order to further develop and employ the SCM design scheme, focusing on its further geometrical optimization for both standalone configuration and assembly of multiple modules to realize novel, economic and easy to fabricate soft robotic systems.

This article aimed to examine the financial networks of equity linkages and cross-shareholdings between publicly listed companies in Poland (WIG20 and mWIG40) and to explore the changes that occurred in bank ownership because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The literature review revealed four main types of financial networks: cross-shareholding, correlation, debt, and Granger-causality. Four equity-based directed financial networks were constructed. The two key network measures used in this research are PageRank (risk exposure and network importance) and modularity class (community detection).
Celem artykułu jest zbadanie sieci finansowych powiązań kapitałowych i krzyżowych pomiędzy firmami notowanymi na giełdzie w Polsce (WIG20 i mWIG40) oraz analiza zmian, które zaszły w strukturze własnościowej banków w wyniku pandemii COVID-19. Przegląd literatury pozwala na wyszczególnienie czterech głównych typów sieci finansowych: powiązań krzyżowych, korelacji, długu oraz przyczynowości Grangera. Skonstruowane zostały cztery kierunkowe sieci finansowe powiązań kapitałowych. Dwa kluczowe mierniki zastosowane w niniejszym badaniu to PageRank (ekspozycja na ryzyko i znaczenie sieciowe) oraz modularność (wykrywanie społeczności).

In this article, the model of an inconsistent mind according to suggestions of Hilary Putnam and Alan Turing is presented from the perspective of the cognitive sciences and the evolutionary psychology. An attempt to reconcile the two versions of the modular model of mind by Jerry Fodor and Steven Pinker is undertaken followed by the discussion of the problem of evolutionary origin of mind. Next, the problem of the central module (interface) is considered which is supposed to integrate the individual and specialized modules of mind. The main thesis of this article states that the ‘global’ inconsistency of mind may result from the inconsistencies among ‘local’ computational modules of mind. Mind may be modeled as an inconsistent formal system which remains non-trivial. Consequently, it seems rational to postulate that the operation of mind is not based on the classical Aristotelian logic and is better described the systems of a paraconsistent logic. Best examples of such logical systems include the discussive logic by Stanisław Jaśkowski, the logic of formal inconsistency (LFI) by Newton da Costa and the many-valued logic by Jan Łukasiewicz and Graham Priest.

The growth of modularity and unifications of designed and introduced fighting vehicles is possible as a result of technical and technological achievements and changing conditions of present war operation. This factors require quick repair of damaged vehicles and interoperability of operations. The review of present conceptions of internal and external modularity of modern tactical fighting vehicles was introduced in the publication. External modularity was used for generating new families of tracked and wheeled vehicles and their exchangeable of internal modular sets: suspension and propulsion system, crew cabin and module with equipments. Internal modularity consist in application various length of vehicle bodies and simultaneously their different volumes and application of many unified units designed for existing vehicles. Implementation of hybrid propulsion systems for military vehicles and application many sources of energy on the board are connected with electric lines enlarges the possibilities of composition of the vehicles interiors by application many modular components which can be mounted in the most convenient places. Ideas of the modular construction of combat vehicles assure the maximum enlargement of repair and modernization compliance, and consequently the maintenance in line of maximum number modern and fully efficient vehicles.

W artykule podjęto problematykę struktury społeczności sieci przedsiębiorstw powiązanych wspólną dyrekcją. Badaniem objęto 518 przedsiębiorstw w ramach największego komponentu spośród łącznie 902 przedsiębiorstw notowanych na głównym rynku Giełdy Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie oraz na rynku NewConnect pod koniec 2014 r. Oceny siły struktury społeczności dokonano za pomocą funkcji jakości podziału Q, obliczoną dla siedmiu podziałów przedsiębiorstw stosując odpowiednio odmienne algorytmy. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwoliła stwierdzić występowanie silnej struktury społeczności w sieci powiązań przedsiębiorstw na polskim rynku kapitałowym.
The article looks at the community structure in the network of interlocking directorates. The study covered 518 enterprises within the largest component of the total of 902 companies listed on the main market at the Warsaw Stock Exchange and on the NewConnect at the end of 2014. The strength of the community structure was assessed using the distribution function for quality (modularity), calculated for seven divisions of enterprises with different algorithms, respectively. The analysis led to the conclusion that the community structure existing in the board network between enterprises on Polish capital market is strong.
