Opis:
How to Read Contemporary Poetry in a Contemporary Way The article constitutes an attempt to pose a question regarding the modes of reading contemporary poetry; at the same time, it ought to be noted that the term contemporary literature is understood broadly and it denotes primarily changes in the modernist and late-modernist literature. It is, on the one hand, the critical writings of Majorie Perloff – described here against the background of the adventures of the American criticism of the 20th and 21st century, and on the other, a reading of Marcin Świetlicki’s single poem Tak, kawiarniany dekadentyzm – that proved to be convenient fields to pose the above question. The thesis concerning the exhaustion of the intentional critical style and mode of symbolist exegesis is accompanied by an attempt to reconstruct the principles which would make it possible in contemporary times to read closely a work of poetry.

Opis:
Varied Modes of Reading The authoress of the article observes a crisis of the ability of close reading in the American university practice as well as in art criticism; the crisis is caused – she tries to convince us – by the too quick and rapid cultural change in humanistic studies. Above all, she suggests a return to the practice of close reading, however not on the principle of new criticism, but with a modifying difference (here there emerges the category of reading closely). In the successive parts of her paper, Marjorie Perloff ponders on the possible modes of reading „the highly nondescript contemporary poetry” and suggests that it should be subjected to „purposefully indefinite and loose manner of reading” (at this point there emerges the concept of reading differentially). It turns out that the art of interpretation – reflection on the modes of reading contemporary poetry is accompanied by an analysis of a number of concrete poems (among others by William Carlos Williams, Tom Raworth, Susan Howe) – is above all a study of the „structure of changes” of the contemporary poem, a study oriented at a skillful way of posing questions regarding poems, rather than furnishing answers and coming up with ready-made interpretations.

Opis:
The article presents an unofficial discussion that took place between one of the most prominent Polish critics of the late 19th century and Antoni Lange, a raising poet of the 90s, whose work had gained little attention from the older colleague. Mentioned briefly in Chmielowski’s Współczesni poeci polscy in 1895, Lange responded to some of the critic’s fterwards. Chmielowski did not respond to that directly, however, his review of Lange’s volume of poetry published at the time and the will to defend his claims using the adversary’s poetry as a pretext shows that the young poet had succeeded in provoking the respected critic to take defensive position. The two writers, discussing an ongoing ‘crisis’ of poetry, present their own perspectives on the roots of the situation. Chmielowski’s claims from the beginning of the 20th century prove that the dispute, unofficial as it was, was won by Antoni Lange.

Opis:
The article attempts to reveal a reconstruction of Piotr Chmielowski’s critical thought regarding the poetical works written by Adam Asnyk (pen-name E...ly). The starting point for the discussion is a set of variations for different editions of Zarys literatury polskiej as well as other works of the critic elucidating the specificity, importance and the character of the poetry of E…ly. The article attempts to show why it was just the figure of the poet that was necessary and constituted a model figure for revealing the attempts of saving continuance of not only Polish poetry but also national culture and heritage. In his critical reflection, Chmielowski tries to find continuity between the Romantic paradigm and the post-January insurgency paradigm that was to define the obligations and the status of poetry, as well as to identify, uphold important question for Chmielowski himself as to why it was necessary to find among the generation of post-insurgency Poles a figure that would resemble Ignacy Kraszewski, a man-institution, and thus provide an exemplary model, necessary and much needed model figure in upholding and maintaining national consciousness and in preserving continuity. It is the culture and literature of the latter half of the nineteenth century that Chmielowski investigates in search of poetry and the poet as an icon of the nineteenth centuryness and modernity in the post-January insurgency non-poetical times. Asnyk can be seen, in Chmielowski’s terms, as an icon of the modern poet, a keystone figure who straddled the line between what can be consolidated and what was left to be saved in order to preserve the paradigm of Romantic poeticalness and the necessity for adjusting to new cultural circumstances and contemporary expectations on the part of receivers.

Brzozowski w swoich utworach zarysował perspektywę konieczności modernizacji kultury polskiej i przejścia życia społecznego z zacofanej fazy XIX-wiecznego kolonializmu do współczesności. Dlatego kategorie i pojęcia teorii studiów postkolonialnych wydają się niezbędnym składnikiem analiz i interpretacji całości twórczości pisarza.
The subject of the article is an innovative thesis that the theory of postcolonial studies should be included into the range of comments on the works of the famous critic: Stanisław Brzozowski (1878–1911). The article presents the arguments which indicate that the context of postcolonial studies is appropriate for interpretation cultural and literal essays as well as novels of Brzozowski – the outstanding representative of Polish modernism. He used to write in the critical period in which Poland was freeing itself from annexation. Brzozowski insisted on necessity of modernization of Polish culture and Polish social life. That is why the notion of postcolonial studies seems to be crucial in analyses and interpretations of Brzozowski’s work.

"Scotland Small? Our Multiform, Our Infinite Scotland Small?" Scotland's Literary Contribution to the Modern WorldHugh MacDiarmid’s poem "Scotland Small?" (1943) questions the widespread opinion at the time that Scotland was only a small country geographically with "nothing but heather!", showing how "marvellously descriptive" this may be, but also totally "incomplete". The issue addressed in this article is how Scottish letters, starting with the outstanding and multiform writings of the same Hugh MacDiarmid (Christopher Murray Grieve [1892-1978]) and ending with observations of the international significance of such contemporary Scottish poets as Carol Ann Duffy (b. 1955), the first female to become British Poet Laureate, have contributed to the development and diversity of literature far beyond the borders of Scotland. It is also in looking at the achievements of such diverse writers as Muriel Spark, James Kelman and Ian Rankin as well as poets Ian Hamilton Finlay, Edwin Morgan, Jackie Kay, or the present Scottish Poet Laureate Liz Lochhead, among others, that we can see how significant their literary oeuvre is for a better understanding of the modern world. Emphasis is also placed on the fact that although Scotland is undoubtedly a small country geographically, we can never – in reference to the title of this volume – say it is minor.„Szkocja mała? Nasza wielopostaciowa, bezmierna Szkocja mała?” Literacki wkład Szkocji do współczesnego świataWiersz Hugh MacDiarmid’a Szkocja mała?

Literary Modernism, Slovak Modern School, literary contexts, cultural resonances
Opis:
The problems of modernism in Slovak literature In the literary output of Slovak Modernist authors the period aesthetic universalities of the artistic Modernism, roughly dated 1890–1914, were connected with peculiarities of regional, national literature, traditionally defined by, as well as perceived through the national concept. As a result of national aspect predominance in the previous perception of literature, the Slovak cultural environment may have experienced restructuring of values of the period topics, it happened however, with a the unmistakable granting autonomy to the aesthetic function of literature and individual creative gesture. Slovak Modernism evinces identifiable thematic resonances and contextual proximities with the contemporary European ideological currents and trends. The follwing authors: Ivan Krasko, Janko Jesenský, Ivan Gall, František Votruba, Ľudmila Groeblová, Vladimír Roy, Vladimír Hurban-Svetozárov, Vladimír Hurban-Vladimírov, Martin Rázus, Samo Cambel-Kosorkin, Juraj Slávik-Neresnický abandoned the social-ideological take on literature and started to emphasize the moment of intimacy and sensitivity of production, which was perceived as an individual self-expression, an escape from solitude, the act of confession, and the outcome of a mood and artistic rendition of a unique moment. The starting point was the feeling of sensual deprivation, failure, disappointment, loss, intellectual distress, and crisis. The perception of crises became manifest in vacillation between activity and inertia, harmony and chaos. Revived Romantic poetics with impressionist overtones began to appear sporadically around 1900 and after 1905 (the year Janko Jesenský’s book of poetry, Verše /Verses/ was published), it became widespread, with the culmination of its popularity between 1908–1912. At that point, the revived Romanticism and Impressionism took a noticeably Symbolistic turn. The motifs of decadent stylization became relatively rare. The inclination of late Symbolism towards the grotesque (grotesque-carnival) in the Slovak context is marked by the repeated ironic twist characterizing literarytexts and by seeing life as a farce, carnival or fancy dress ball.

On the other hand, he is not the very often mentioned author the literary journal „Krugovi”, and also he is not considered in the first row of the most influential literary patterns for this generation of writers. However, Antun Gustav Matoš’s image that emerges from the pages of „Krugovi”, although incomplete and fragmentary, is extremely interesting. Young writers attempted to comprehensively educate their literary model reader, so they drew attention to artists who were the most valuable for the native literary tradition. Understanding and acknowledging the importance of his achievements and well-deserved place in the history of Croatian literature, young artists were able, however, to an analytical and critical approach, in the majority of cases presenting a solid argument, not limited to duplication of hackneyed slogans.

This paper deals with the literary works of A.G. Matoš. It attempts to demonstrate that in his works a whole period of the Croatian literature modernism is concentrated. It also explores a question: Why cannot the opus of this Croatian author be absorbed into the Hungarian literature? In the Hungarian literature of modernism Matoš would be disseminated first of all because of his strong literary authority and his very special language use. Despite difficulties, the author of this paper finds some parallels between Matoš and the Hungarian authors of modernism. As a coherent and strong author of extraordinary fantasy, languge usage and style, Matoš can be only partly assimilated into the Hungarian literature.

This essay discusses the Anti-Sienkiewicz campaign briefly. The affair happened in 1903 in the Warsaw weekly magazine “Głos”, but was written up in many Polish newspapers. Stanisław Brzozowski (1878-1911), the beginning publicist, literary critic and novelist spoke against Sienkiewicz’s famous works. Sienkiewicz’s main novels have been criticised for their conservatism and lack of social progressiveness, although they display great narrative power and contain vivid characterisations in a style full of imagery. The lack of national independence created greater reverence towards national history in 19th century Polish literature. Sienkiewicz felt a close bond with the Polish nobility. Brzozowski tried to put his own philosophy of culture and his concept of the “philosophy of labour” into practice. He spoke as am exponent of Polish modernism and socialism.

The twentieth century has developed three models for describing contemporary art. Three narratives dominated in the 1930’s and the 1940’s: Paris-French, German-Expressionist and avant-garde-international. In the 1950’s and the 1960’s, avant-garde-centrist model included two basic phases or formations in the art of the twentieth century. Historical avantgarde period covered the years 1905–1930. Neo-avant-garde lasted from 1955 to 1970. To a pair of avant-garde – neo-avant-garde, some authors add yet proto-avant-garde they considered as the nineteenth century artistic trends leading to the birth of the historical avant-garde - romanticism, realism of Courbet, impressionism, post-impressionism and on the other hand post-avant-garde, or art after the fall of the avant-garde. In the 1980’s and the 1990’s, avant-garde model was superseded by a model operating the opposition modernism - postmodernism. According to that model, the twentieth century art include two cultural and artistic formations: modernist and postmodernist formations. The first experienced its climax around 1910, when abstract art was born; the second in the 1980’s. Modernism and postmodernism can be considered as two codes that define literary (artistic) codes, but there is a significant difference between them. The modernist code reveals modernist essentialist attitude, the trend of looking for essence, individuality, specificity of art, trying to melt pure art, while postmodernist code refers to the avant-garde and the expanded field of art, focusing on the relationship of art and life.
