Opis:
The current work was carried out during the two growing seasons of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 at the Experimental Station of the Environmental Studies and Research Institute, University of Sadat City, Sadat City, Menofia Governorate, Egypt. It aimed to investigate the effect of applying potassium fertilizer at 90, 140 and 190 kg K2O/ha combined with spraying applications of seaweed extract for four times in a 15-day interval starting at 40 days after sowing at rates of 0.0, 1.5 and 3.0 ml/L on the yield, mineral contents and nutritional quality of quinoa grains cv. CICA. A split-plot design was used in three replicates. Results reported that by increasing the application of potassium from 90 to 190 kg K2O/ha, gradual increases in all studied parameters of quinoa grains occurred in the seasons of 2016–2017 and 2017–2018, except for class B grain, Mg and fiber contents. Potassium application at 190 kg K2O/ha gave the highest significant values of all determined parameters in comparison with treatment of 90 kg K2O/ha. In most cases, insignificant differences were detected between potassium fertilizer levels of 140 and 190 kg K2O/ha. Spraying seaweed extract at 3.0 ml/L resulted in superiority of all studied characters except class B grain, Mg and fiber contents, followed by 1.5 ml/L treatment with insignificant differences between them in most cases. There were significant differences among spraying seaweed treatments on Ca, Fe, Mn, protein and fiber contents in both seasons, N, P and K during the first season, and grain yield/plant, total grain yield/ha and Zn content during the second season. The interaction between potassium fertilization levels and spraying applications of seaweed extract had significantly different effects on all studied characters during both seasons, except for Mg percentage. It is evident that the application of potassium fertilization at 140 or 190 kg K2O/ha combined with the spraying of seaweed extract at 3.0 ml/L caused an apparent enhancement of the yield, mineral contents and nutritional quality of quinoa grains during the two experimental seasons.

Opis:
The study analysed the relationship between the granulometric composition of grassland soils as determined by laser diffraction and their content of mineral forms of nitrogen and organic carbon. The content of mineral forms of nitrogen (NO3-N and NH4-N) in soil samples - after their extraction with 1% solution K2SO4 , was determined by flow colourimetry. Soil organic carbon content was determined using the Tyurin method. The study examined soil samples collected from 169 control and measurement sites located in different regions of Poland in terms of conditions for agricultural production. Statistical analyses of the research results showed that the grain size of grassland soils had a significant effect on their ammonium nitrogen content but not on their nitrate nitrogen and organic carbon content. In this respect, it was found that there was a positive correlation between the share of the sand fraction and the content of ammonium nitrogen in soils and an opposite relation between the share of coarse silt, fine silt and clay and the content of the aforementioned component. Results of the analyses differ considerably from the results of studies by other authors on the influence of soil grain size distribution on the content of mineral nitrogen and organic carbon in soils based on classical methods of measurements of soil particle size distribution. There is a need to develop solutions to convert and compare results obtained by laser diffraction and standard methods.

The present research accounts for the physicochemical and phytochemical characteristics of yellow and brown Cyperus esculentus, which were subjected to standard chemical and biochemical analysis. The results obtained from the analysis of yellow tiger nut showed the following phytochemical properties: anthocyanin 0.82 ± 0.02 µg/ml, oxalate 1.43 ± 0.05 µg/ml, tannin 12.22 ± 0.10 µg/ml, rutin 39.19 ± 0.29 µg/ml, phenol 10.94 ± 0.05 µg/ml, lunamarine 38.99 ± 0.07 µg/ml, saponin 44.67 ± 0.15 µg/ml, ribalinidine 1.35 ± 0.03 µg/ml, phytate 0.33 ± 0.01 µg/ml, catechin 48.29 ± 0.04 µg/ml, and kaempferol 38.59 ± 0.02 µg/ml. The brown tiger nut showed the presence of the phytochemicals with values as: anthocyanin 0.01 ± 0.00 µg/ml, oxalate 2.66 ± 0.02 µg/ml, tannin 12.67 ± 0.04 µg/ml, rutin 43.99 ± 0.05 µg/ml, phenol 11.02 ± 0.10 µg/ml, lunamarine 39.66 ± 0.03 µg/ml, saponin 47.79 ± .06 µg/ml, ribalinidine 1.21 ± 0.04 µg/ml, phytate 0.28 ± 0.03 µg/ml, catechin 46.77 ± 0.05 µg/ml, and kaempferol 38.34 ± 0.15 µg/ml. The observed level of mineral elements in the tiger nut is in the increasing order of zinc > sodium > iron > copper > calcium > magnesium > potassium for yellow tiger nut, and for brown tiger nut the order is zinc > sodium > iron > copper > calcium > magnesium > potassium. The values of physical and chemical properties recorded for yellow tiger nut is in the increasing order of moisture > ash content > crude protein > crude fiber > crude fat > carbohydrate, the increasing order for brown tiger nut shows ash content > moisture > crude protein > crude fiber > crude fat > carbohydrate. This indicates that tiger nuts contain elevated carbohydrate levels, crude fat and protein. From the data obtained, the high potassium to low sodium ratio of the two species of tiger nuts consequently might be imperative in diet recommendations for patients with high blood pressure (high BP) and edema as well. The investigated tiger nut varieties are rich sources of the phytochemicals, oil and contain moderate amounts of protein. They are also rich sources of fiber and carbohydrates. The phytochemical constituents of the tiger nuts are important and could be of high commercial significance in both, research institutes and pharmaceuticals companies for manufacturing of new drugs and for therapeutic applications.

Opis:
Coccinia abyssinica (Lam.) Cogn. (local name anchote) is a tuber crop that belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and it is cultivated for food and medicinal uses. It has relatively high quality of nutrient composition compared to other tuber crops, and is considered as the leading proteinous root crop with a high calcium content. Therefore, cooked anchote tubers are highly recommended for patients with broken or fractured bones. Anchote also contains alkaloids, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, and saponins. Although anchote is principally cultivated for its tubers, farmers prefer propagation by seeds as they are easy to store. Farmers select high-quality fruits for future seeds, based on the size of fruits and tubers. Since diseases and pests rarely affect the tubers, protection is not common. However, the fruit fly can damage the fruits, which predisposes them to decay. Although anchote has very high potential as a food security crop, it is neglected and underutilized and has received very limited research attention. Research published so far covers its ethnobotany, nutritional and anti-nutritional composition, traditional methods of reproduction, in vitro reproduction, somatic embryogenesis, anther breeding, and morphological and molecular genetic diversity. This article includes an analysis of previous and current research achievements, presents findings in a comprehensive way, and suggests future direction in crop improvement using biotechnological tools.

Chemical elements in the samples of wild edible mushrooms of the Morchella group collected from different unpolluted Sicilian sites was analyzed by the ICP-MS (method) to detect the content of their minerals and determine whether soil geology and geochemistry can influence the chemical composition in fungi. Results showed that the mushroom samples mainly contained a high concentration of K and P and a wide variety of minor and trace elements (V, Mo, Pb, Ce, Cs, Zr), including heavy metals. Statistical analysis showed that the mushrooms differed in their content of minor and trace elements based on the geological/geographic site of origin. Comparison with other studies showed differences in the content detected in the Sicilian morels with those collected from other geographical sites. Conversely, different fungal species collected from similar geological sites in Sicily showed different patterns of accumulation of the elements confirming that bioconcentration in fungi is species- and site-dependent.

In the present study, the effects of intermittent microwave-vacuum drying on the “Deveci” pear in terms of the drying kinetics, mineral content, protein content, rehydration ratio, color, energy, specific energy and microstructure were investigated. According to the drying treatments, increased microwave power (100 and 200 W) and vacuum (200 and 400 mmHg) applications provided higher drying rates and protein content. Dried pear samples had a higher mineral content than fresh samples because of the increasing dry matter content. At the higher vacuum level experiments, the energy consumption reduced and the rehydration ratio increased. Moreover, the higher microwave power caused a decrease of the L* (lightness) value. However, a regular pore size and pore distribution in all drying experiments were observed in the microstructures of microwave-vacuum-dried samples.

Opis:
The three-factorial vegetative-pot experiment was carried out in 2007-2008. The first factor consisted of the series with and without compost of municipal sewage sludge and the second factor involved doses of multi-component mineral fertilizers. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) of Stadion cv. was the test plant. The purpose of the work was to determine the effect of mineral multi-component fertilizers with combined organic fertilization on the content total and forms assimilable of macroelements in soil. Single doses of mineral fertilizers and urea increased the content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the soil compared to the control. Doubling the doses of fertilizers and urea raised the content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the soil as compared to single doses. Types of multicomponent mineral fertilizers with the addition of urea did not have a major impact on the diversity of studied elements content in the soil. After two years of experiment, the soil to which compost was introduced in spring contained more nitrogen and phosphorus compared to the control object by 21% and 8.96% respectively. The potassium content in the soil was the same as in the control object. Doubling the doses of mineral fertilizers and urea with the participation of compost resulted in an increase in the content of available forms of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sulfate in the soil by 2.52%, 9.12%, 2.25% and 0.80%, respectively, in comparison with single doses. The content of available forms of phosphorus and potassium in the soil after the end of the experiment was greater than of the available forms of magnesium and sulfur.

To tolerate harsh climatic conditions, olive tree Chetoui has developed some anatomic, physiologic and biochemical mechanisms. The aim of this study was to determine the indicators of stress in leaves, stems and roots growing under various climatic conditions. To protect against stress conditions this cultivar increased cuticle thickness, protective structures and building parenchyma tissues of leaves, woods and roots from the North to the South. The volatile compounds, extracted from northern and southern Chetoui leaves and roots, were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Great changes in volatiles were illustrated in the studied organs, by enrichment in phenolics and fatty acids for leaves and in hydrocarbons for roots of southern Chetoui. Also, a reduction in terpenes, alcohols and carbonylic compounds was noted in both southern samples. Moreover, minerals of all organs of Chetoui, varied in content and allocation, but their levels are the highest in leaves. The changes in volatiles might be affected by changes in the mineral elements uptake or accumulation under environment stress. A significant correlation was noted between phenolic compounds and sodium, nitrogen, and calcium contents. However, terpenoids was highly correlated with phosphorus content for all organs and studied areas. The detection of new volatiles, anatomical and mineral changes seem to be efficient indicators of adaptation of Chetoui to environment stress conditions.

Opis:
Introduction and aim: The role of fluorides in caries prevention is widely known, however, due to a large number of factors affecting the metabolism of bone tissue (e.g. estrogens), the evaluation of the effect of these compounds on the masticatory system requires comprehensive studies. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of fluorides on the chosen biochemical markers of bone remodelling, on the bone mass and structural changes in the lower jaw (mandible) of castrated rats, after six-week exposure to sodium fluoride in different doses. Material and methods: The experiment was conducted on an animal model using female Wistar rats divided into four groups: a control group and three research groups (ovariectomized and exposed to fluoride compounds in different doses in the drinking water). In order to evaluate the effect of estrogens shortage induced by double-sided ovariectomy and to analyze the fluorides influence on bone metabolism and structural changes of the mandible, tests of bone tissue metabolism markers, bone mineral content in the mandible, height of a molar tooth, height of alveolar appendix and index of rats' alveolar appendices heights were performed. Results: Ovariectomy procedure led to the appearance of higher concentrations of bone tissue resorption markers and lower mineral weight of mandible, but did not exert a considerable impact on mineral weight index in animals receiving fluorides. There was no statistical difference in the heights of molar teeth between all experimental groups. Conclusion: Eestrogens shortage, due to ovariectomy, reduces mineral weight of lower jaw bones and mineral weight index, and the fluoride supply prevents the loss of minerals from an osseous tissue.
Wnioski: Niedobór estrogenów spowodowany wycięciem jajników prowadzi do obniżenia masy mineralnej kości żuchwy oraz wskaźnika masy mineralnej, a fluorki zapobiegają utracie minerałów z tkanki kostnej.
