Opis:
Corrosion of metals is a serious environmental problem and has been given much attention in the oil and gas industries. In several industrial processes (acid cleaning and etching, removal of rust and scale), metal surfaces are often made to come in contact with acids. In the present study, an attempt was made to examine Poupartia birrea (P. birres) back extract as a potential green corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in a 0.5 M H2SO4 medium, using the weight loss determination method. The results of our work indicate that highest inhibition efficiency exhibited by Poupartia birrea is 70%. The inhibiting effect of the studied extract could be attributed to the presence of phytochemical constituents present in the extract that are adsorbed on the surface of the mild steel. The plant extract can, hence, be considered as being eco-friendly and an effective green corrosion inhibitor for mild steel exposed to an acid medium.

Ethanollic extract of Phyllanthus amarus (EEPA) was tested as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 2 M HCl solution using gravimetric and gasometric methods at 303, 313, 323 K and 333 K. The results revealed that the corrosion rate increases with temperature and time. Addition of the concentration of ethanollic extract of Phyllanthus amarus to the corroding environment lowered the corrosion rate of mild steel and increased inhibition efficiency (IE %) of ethanollic extract. Inhibition efficiency was found to decreased with temperature. Fitting of the experimental data to the Arrhenius and Transition state equations revealed that the Organic constituents of the extract were physically adsorbed on the corroding surface of the steel and adsorption of ethanollic extract of Phyllanthus amarus (EEPA) on mild steel surface was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and Freundlich adsorption isotherm and sign of the Gibb’s fee energy of the adsorption obtained suggested that inhibitor molecules have been spontaneously adsorbed onto the mild steel surface. Positive values obtained for enthalpy change indicated that the adsorption of inhibitor is endothermic.

Constituents of the ethanol extract of Sida acuta (SA) leaves were investigated by phytochemical, GC-MS and FTIR studies and its corrosion inhibition effects on mild steel was studied in 1 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions, using gravimetric and electrochemical methods of corrosion monitoring. The surface morphology of the mild steel surface before and after corrosion was also assessed using SEM imaging. The phytochemical, GC-MS and FTIR results revealed that SA contains carbonyl groups, aromatic rings, and double bonds that make it a prospective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel. Moreover, gravimetric results indicated that SA is an effective additive for the corrosion of mild steel at all the concentrations studied. Finally, the electrochemical results showed that SA inhibited both the anodic and cathodic half reactions by the adsorption of the extract constituents on the mild steel surface; this was further confirmed by the SEM investigations.

The potential of flavonoid extract of Erigeron floribundus as green inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel in 2 M HCl solution was studied using gasometric method. The results obtained, indicated that the extract is an adsorption inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel. The inhibition efficiency of the inhibitor was found to increased with increase in concentration of the inhibitor. From the observed trend for the variation of inhibition efficiency with temperature and the range of value obtained from activation energy (16.16-3.02 KJmol-1), enthalpy (13.5-38.84 KJmol-1), entropy (-22.67 to 88.44 KJmol-1) and free energy (-4.23 to -2.61 KJmol-1), a chemical and physical adsorption mechanism is propose for the adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface. In addition, the adsorption is endothermic, spontaneous and is best described by Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

This study presents the deployment of antepsin (sucralfate) as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in H2SO4 medium. Chemical (gravimetric) and electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) techniques were used in the corrosion control investigation. The antepsin drug was characterized by gas chromatography mass spectrophotometer (GCMS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Effects of inhibitor concentration, temperature and time on weight loss, corrosion rate, inhibition efficiency and degree of surface coverage were examined. Thermodynamic and adsorption properties of the corrosion inhibition process were determined. Inhibition efficiency was optimized using central composite design tool of Design Expert software version 12. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to determine the type and effectiveness of the inhibitor. As a confirmatory test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to examine the surface morphology of the mild steel samples. Analysis of the results showed that major constituents of antepsin include tetradecanoate, metronidazole, hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester and 11-octadecenoic acid. The predominant functional groups include; C=O stretch, C-H bend and symmetric and asymmetric =C-O-C. Adsorption of the molecules of antepsin on the surface of the mild steel was spontaneous and occurred in agreement with physical adsorption. A quadratic model adequately described the relationship between inhibition efficiency and corrosion control variables of concentration of the inhibitor, temperature and time. Optimum inhibition efficiency of antepsin was obtained as 86.75%. Chemical and electrochemical results agreed that antepsin is suitable for corrosion control of mild steel in H2SO4 solution. Antepsin acted as mixed-type inhibitor (controlled both cathodic and anodic reactions).

The efficiency of oil extract of Balanites aegyptiaca seeds on the inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl has been investigated using gravimetric and electrochemical (Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)) techniques. Results obtained show that Balanites aegyptiaca (BA) oil extract inhibited the acid corrosion of mild steel. Polarization technique showed that BA oil extract acted as mixed-type inhibitor in 1 M HCl solution. The impedance technique reveals that charge-transfer process controls the corrosion of mild steel. The inhibiting action of BA oil extract was attributed to their adsorption on the mild steel surface and the formation of dense protective layer which increased by increasing their concentration. BA inhibits the corrosion of mild steel by an adsorption mechanism, which follows Temkin adsorption isotherm. Physical adsorption mechanism has been proposed for the inhibitory action of BA oil extract. The protective film formed on the surface was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Opis:
Mild steel is a very important engineering metal. Petrochemical industries are used bulk amount for their various purposes like recovery of crude oil, refinery units and transportation. Crude oil is a very highly viscous liquid for the opening of the month well strong HCl acid and saline water is used. They produce hostile environment of mild steel. Gaseous substances like CO2 and SO2 gases are found into the well of petroleum. Large amount of saline water are used during recovery of crude oil in this water CO2 and SO2 are dissolved to produce H2CO3 and H2SO4. These acids create an acidic medium of mild steel. Saline waters have possessed Cl¯ ions. It produces ambient environment for mild steel. The solution of salty water contains dissolve oxygen which develop corrosive environment of mild steel. These major corrosive substances are available during recovery of crude oil and they form corrosion cell with base metal. Metal produces galvanic, pitting, stress, crevice, intergranular corrosion. Nanocaoting and filler methods are used to protect metal in such un-friendly environment. The corrosion rate of metal was calculated by weight loss experiment in absence and presence of nanocoating and filler materials. The synthesized organic compound octahydrodibenzo[a,d][8]annulene-5,12-dihydrazone is applied for nanocoating and MgS as filler. The coating and filling works were completed by chemical vapour deposition and nozzle spray method. Potentiostat used for determination corrosion potential and corrosion current density. The surface adsorption was studied by thermal parameters like activation energy, heat of adsorption, free energy, enthalpy and entropy. The thermal parameters results were shown that coating and filler compounds were adhered with base metal by chemical bonding. The thermal results were calculated by Arrhenius equation and Langmuir isotherm. The coating and the filler substance formed composite barrier with metal and developed a protective barrier for the corrosive substances.

Opis:
Point of present exploration was to figure out the anticorrosion activity of Acacia Cyanophylla (Saligna leaves) extract on the corrosion of mild steel in dilute sulfuric acid medium, using weight loss measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The result of the study revealed that the extract act as a potent inhibitor on mild steel in acid medium. The increase in inhibitor concentration and immersion time showed a positive effect on inhibition efficiency. EIS exhibited one capacitive loop which indicates that the corrosion reaction is controlled by charge transfer process. The increase of phase shift (n) in presence of (ACLE) lower surface roughness. This change reveals the adsorption of the inhibitor compound on the steel surface. According to the results of weight loss measurements, the adsorption of the extract on the steel surface can be described by the Langmuir isotherm. The inhibition mechanism of (ACLE) molecules involves physical interaction between the inhibitor and metal surface. Additionally, Protective film formation against acid attack was confirmed by FT-IR and AFM techniques.

Opis:
Purpose: This research aims to analyse the influence of blanking clearance size on the burr development for mild steel sheet, brass and aluminium. The main reason for this research is estimating the burr size on blank parts. It is still significant since the quality of the products is determined by evaluating the amount of allowable burr in the parts. Design/methodology/approach: For the blanking process on the 3.00 mm thick sheets, various sizes of blanking clearance for a 20 mm diameter of the die opening are employed, as is the technique for obtaining the parts. Then the height of the burr on each product was measured using a micrometre and toolmaker microscope. The height of burr for each size of blanking clearance have been recorded and compared using a graph. Comparison made to identify which measure of blanking clearance and which type of material will produce a small size of burr. Findings: For mild steel, brass, and aluminium, blanking clearance 0.15 mm produced burr heights of 0.088 mm, 0.015 mm, and 0.024 mm, and blanking clearance 0.13 mm produced bur heights of 0.192 mm, 0.055 mm, and 0.046 mm, respectively. The brass had a lower burr height than mild steel and aluminium, according to the results. More significant blanking clearance (0.15 mm) produced a smaller size of burr compared to a smaller blanking clearance (0.13 mm). Practical implications: This study focuses on burr height rather than the wear of the punch and die cutting edge; burr height can affect punch and die sharpness. It also can guide practitioners in estimating blanking clearance and the burr height of mild steel, brass and aluminium. Originality/value: This paper demonstrates that the gap between the punch and die influences the burr height. The material strength also affects the burr height, with a high tensile strength resulting in a larger burr.

This paper reports the experimental results of a study investigating the effect of CFRP strengthening of metallic structures for increasing fatigue life. In the study, samples made form puddled steel and mild S235 grade steel strengthened with CFRP strips were examined. Samples were subjected to tensile fatigue loading with a stress ratio R of 0.115 and 0.130 (mild steel samples) and 0.13/1.25/0.15/1.07 (puddled steel samples). A total of 9 samples with CFRP/steel single overlap joints and 20 reference specimens were tested to determine their fatigue life and failure modes. Normal modulus CFRP strips with one cross section (20 x 1.4 mm) were used in this study. Laboratory test results showed that CFRP strengthening has visible effect on the fatigue life of the steel. The application of adhesively bonded CFRP laminates significantly prolongs fatigue life of the specimens. The increase in fatigue life of the steel samples strengthened with CFRP strips was 2 to 16 times (for mild steel) and 11.6 to 34.8 times (for puddled steel).

Tinidazole, a pharmaceutical compound has been investigated with reference to the inhibition of mild steel acidic corrosion in 1 molar HCl by means of weight loss and electrochemical measurements. The outcomes attained at 30°C revealed that the Tinidazole had obtained 90% inhibition efficiency at 400 ppm concentration. These results explain that the inhibition process occurs by means of adsorption. The inhibitor molecules adsorb on the surface of the metal, following Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements established that Tinidazole is an inhibitor of a mixed type. An appropriate equivalent electric circuit for modeling and the analysis of impedance data to give a better explanation of the process of corrosion inhibition have been proposed.

Opis:
This work is an experimental study of thermo-mechanical surface hardening of mild steel with trace elements like titanium in negligible concentrations. This is somewhat an advanced technique used to harden steel surface which can be hardened in many typical ways. The concept is combining the thermal as well as mechanical technique to attain better results. It is quite obvious that mechanical refers to the compressive loading during machining and thermal refers to producing heat on the surface of work piece. The ideal conditions are when the heat produced is enough to achieve austenite and then subsequent quick cooling helps in the formation of marten site, which is metallurgically the most highly strong phase of steel, in terms of hardness. The coolant used preferably is the emulsified oil which flows on the surface during machining with variable rate of flow as the optimum effect is. This process hardens the surface of steel and increases its resistance against wear and abrasion. Preference is to achieve surface hardening using the conventional equipment so that operational cost is kept low and better results are attained. This technique has been quite successful in the laboratory. It can be termed as friction hardening. Some improvements in the process scheme and working environment can be made to get better results.

Opis:
Mild Steel and their products are main raw material for a strong infrastructure for every country which is the main demand in the race of survival, stabilization, growth and competition. Industrialization and modernization in now a days has made a strong demand of steel and their maintenance but atmospheric corrosion can aggressively accelerate the degradation of steel during their manufacturing, processing, storage and transportation. In these cases, traditional methods to prevent corrosion are not suitable which provide the scope of Vapour Phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VPCI) in industries, defense and daily life. Three new VPCI namely Diallylamine (DAA), 1-Benzylimidazole (1-BIZ) and 5-Aminotetrazole (5-ATZ) were tested for mild steel in different aggressive atmospheric conditions by Weight Loss Test, Eschke Test, Salt Spray Test, Sulphur dioxide (SO2) Test at 50 °C and results of these tests were supported by Metallurgical Research Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
