The paper aims at presentation of modelling of human joints withinthe framework micropolar fluid theory. A mathematical model of two converging spheres represents the biobearings. In the model the boundaries of the spheres are considered to be rigid and the lubricant (synovial fluid) is represented by a micropolar fluid. Basing on the asymptotic solution obtained for squeezing motion of converging spheres (Kucaba-Piętal, 1999), the velocity vector in a gap is determined and asymptotic values of the forceare calculated. The effects or rheological constants variation on the flow field in a gap are disscussed.

Opis:
A numerical study of an axisymmetric steady laminar incompressible flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid over a stretchable disk is carried out when the fluid is subjected to an external transverse magnetic field. The governing nonlinear equations of motion are transformed into a dimensionless form through Von Karman’s logic similarity functions. An algorithm based on a finite difference scheme is used to solve the reduced coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations with the associated boundary conditions. Effects of the micropolar parameters, the magnetic parameter and the Prandtl number on the flow velocity and temperature distribution are discussed. Investigations predict that the heat transfer rate at the surface of the disk increases with an increase in the values of micropolar parameters. The magnetic field enhances the shear and couple stresses. The shear stress factor is lower for micropolar fluids as compared to Newtonian fluids, which may be beneficial in flow and heat control of polymeric processing.
W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań numerycznych nad osiowo-symetrycznym, laminarnym i ustalonym opływem elektrycznie przewodzącej cieczy mikropolarnej wokół rozciągliwego dysku przy jednoczesnym oświetleniu cieczy polem magnetycznym. Nieliniowe równanie ruchu opływu sprowadzono do postaci bezwymiarowej za pomocą funkcji podobieństwa von Karmana. Do rozwiązania uproszczonych, sprzężonych i nieliniowych równań różniczkowych zwyczajnych z towarzyszącymi warunkami brzegowymi użyto algorytmu opartego na metodzie różnic skończonych. Przedyskutowano wpływ parametrów mikropolarności, wartości pola magnetycznego oraz liczby Prandtla na rozkład prędkości i temperatury cieczy. Według badań, tempo przepływu ciepła na powierzchni dysku wzrasta z rosnącymi wartościami parametrów mikropolarności. Dodatkowo, obecność pola magnetycznego powiększa naprężenia ścinające i momentowe. Wartość naprężeń ścinających jest mimo to mniejsza dla cieczy mikropolarnej niż dla newtonowskiej, co może być korzystne w monitorowaniu przepływu i transferu ciepła podczas procesu obróbki polimerów.

Consider a pair of confocal prolate spheroids S0 and S1 where S0 is within S1. Let the spheroid S0 be a solid and the annular region between S0 and S1 be porous. The present investigation deals with a flow of an incompressible micropolar fluid past S1 with a uniform stream at infinity along the common axis of symmetry of the spheroids. The flow outside the spheroid S1 is assumed to follow the linearized version of Eringen’s micropolar fluid flow equations and the flow within the porous region is assumed to be governed by the classical Darcy’s law. The fluid flow variables within the porous and free regions are determined in terms of Legendre functions, prolate spheroidal radial and angular wave functions and a formula for the drag on the spheroid is obtained. Numerical work is undertaken to study the variation of the drag with respect to the geometric parameter, material parameter and the permeability parameter of the porous region. An interesting feature of the investigation deals with the presentation of the streamline pattern.

In this paper, a non-isothermal flow of a micropolar fluid in a thin pipe with circular cross- -section is considered. The fluid in the pipe is cooled by the exterior medium and the heat exchange on the lateral part of the boundary is described by Newton’s cooling condition. Assuming that the hydrodynamic part of the system is provided, we seek for the micropolar effects on the heat flow using the standard perturbation technique. Different asymptotic models are deduced depending on the magnitude of the Reynolds number with respect to the pipe thickness. The critical case is identified and the explicit approximation for the fluid temperature is built improving the known result for the classical Newtonian flow as well. The obtained results are illustrated by some numerical simulations.

This work investigates rotational effects on propagation and reflection of waves at the free surface of a micropolar fibre-reinforced medium with voids under magnetic fields. When the P-wave is incident on the free surface, there exist four coupled reflected plane waves traveling in the medium; quasi-longitudinal displacement (qLD) wave, quasi-transverse displacement (qTD) wave, quasi-transverse microrotational (qTM) wave and a wave due to voids. Normal mode analysis is adopted in concomitant with Snell’s laws, and appropriate boundary conditions in determination of the solution. Amplitude ratios which correspond to reflected waves in vertical and horizontal components are presented analytically and graphically.

Opis:
The stability of micropolar fluid flow in a channel under the influence of heat function, magnetic field and radiation was investigated. Using the similarity solution and non-dimensionalizing, the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) where transformed to a set of non-linear differential equations (ODEs). We therefore perturbed the system and determined the stability of the system. Wolfram 9 software (Mathematica) was used to analyze the various stability effect of the material parameters on the fluid flow. The graphical results reflects the expected physical behavior of the flow configuration under consideration. The study reveals that the Prandtl (Pr), wave (a), Radiation (R) and heat function parameters at a certain critical value of the wave number hastens the onset of stability. While the Electroconductivity (σ), Magnetic field (M), Micropolar (K) and Microrotational (λ) parameters delays the onset of stability. The result are in agreement with the works of other literature sited.

This paper endeavours to study aspects of wave propagation in a random generalized-thermal micropolar elastic medium. The smooth perturbation technique conformable to stochastic differential equations has been employed. Six different types of waves propagate in the random medium. The dispersion equations have been derived. The effects due to random variations of micropolar elastic and generalized thermal parameters have been computed. Randomness causes change of phase speed and attenuation of waves. Attenuation coefficients for high frequency waves have been computed. Second moment properties have been briefly discussed with application to wave propagation in the random micropolar elastic medium. Integrals involving correlation functions have been transformed to radial forms. A special type of generalized thermo-mechanical auto-correlation functions has been used to approximately compute effects of random variations of parameters. Uncoupled problem has been briefly outlined.

In the present article we studied the thermodynamical theory of micropolar porous material and derived the equations of the linear theory of microploar porous generalized thermoelastic solid. Then the general solution to the field equations for plane axi-symmetric problem are obtained. The Laplace and Hankel transforms have been employed to study the problem, which are inverted numerically by using numerical inversion technique. An application of normal force and thermal source has been taken to show the utility of the approach. The technique developed in the present paper is simple, straightforward and convenient for numerical computation. Effect of micropolarity and porosity on the components of stress, temperature distribution and volume fraction field together with the effect of generalized theory of thermoelasticity have been depicted graphically for a specific model. Some particular cases are also deduced from the present problem.

The problem considered is that of an isotropic, micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids subjected to the Thomson effect. The solution to the problem is presented in the context of the refined multiphase-lags theory of thermoelasticity. The normal mode analysis was used to obtain the analytical expressions of the considered variables. The nondimensional displacement, temperature, microrotation, the change in the volume fraction field and stress of the material are obtained and illustrated graphically. The variations of these quantities have been depicted graphically in the refined-phase-lag theory, Green and Naghdi theory of type II, Lord and Shulman theory and a coupled theory. The effects of the Thomson parameter and phase lag parameters on a homogeneous, isotropic, micropolar thermoelastic material with voids are revealed and discussed. Some particular cases of interest are deduced from the present investigation.

The paper focuses on the numerical analysis of the effect of texturial anisotropy on shear localization in cohesionless granular materials. For simulation of the mechanical behaviour of a granular material during a monotonous deformation path, a hypoplastic constitutive model was used. To take into account a characteristic length of micro-structure, the constitutive model was extended by micro-polar terms. To take into account texturial effects, the granular hardness was modified. The calculations were carried out with a sand specimen during plane strain compression under constant lateral pressure. A stochastic and uniform distribution of the initial void ratio in the granular specimen was assumed. In addition, shear localization for two different uniform initial void ratios was investigated.

In this paper, we investigate a problem on reflection and transmission of plane-waves at an interface between two dissimilar half-spaces of a transversely isotropic micropolar piezoelectric material. The entire model is assumed to rotate with a uniform angular velocity. The governing equations of rotating and transversely isotropic micropolar piezoelectric medium are specialized in a plane. Plane-wave solutions of two-dimensional coupled governing equations show the possible propagation of three coupled plane-waves. For an incident plane-wave at an interface between two dissimilar half-spaces, three reflected and three transmitted waves propagate with distinct speeds. The connections between the amplitude ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are obtained. The expressions for the energy ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are also obtained. A numerical example of the present model is considered to illustrate the effects of rotation on the speeds and energy ratios graphically.

We investigate the upper bound on the vertical heat transport in the fully 3D Rayleigh–Bénard convection problem at the infinite Prandtl number for a micropolar fluid. We obtain a bound, given by the cube root of the Rayleigh number, with a logarithmic correction. The derived bound is compared with the optimal known one for the Newtonian fluid. It follows that the (optimal) upper bound for the micropolar fluid is less than the corresponding bound for the Newtonian fluid at the same Rayleigh number. Moreover, strong microrotational diffusion effects can entirely suppress the heat transfer. In the Newtonian limit our purely analytical findings fully agree with estimates and scaling laws obtained from previous theories significantly relying on phenomenology.

The aim of this paper is to study the applicability of micropolar fluid theory to modeling and to calculating tribological squeeze flow characteristics depending on the geometrical dimension of the flow field. Based on analytical solutions in the lubrication regime of squeeze flow between parallel plates, calculations of the load capacity and time required to squeeze the film are performed and compared – as a function of the distance between the plates – for both fluid models: the micropolar model and the Newtonian model. In particular, maximum distance between the plates for which the micropolar effects of the fluid become significant will be established. Values of rheological constants of the fluids, both those experimentally determined and predicted by means of using equilibrium molecular dynamics, have been used in the calculations. The same analysis was performed as a function of dimensionless microstructural parameters.

Opis:
An analysis is presented to investigate the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mixed convection boundary-layer flow of a micropolar fluid over a vertical wedge in the presence of thermal radiation and heat generation or absorption. The free-stream velocity and surface temperature are assumed to be oscillating in magnitude but not in the direction of the oncoming flow velocity. The governing equations have been solved by two distinct methods, namely, the finite difference method for the entire frequency range, and the series solution for low frequency range and the asymptotic series expansion method for the high frequency range. Numerical solutions provide a good agreement with the series solutions. The amplitudes of skin friction and couple stress coefficients are found to be strongly dependent on the Richardson number and the vortex viscosity parameter. The Prandtl number, the conduction-radiation parameter, the surface temperature parameter and the pressure gradient parameter significantly affect the amplitudes of skin friction, couple stress and surface heat transfer rates. However, the amplitudes of skin friction coefficient are considerably affected by the magnetic field parameter, whereas the amplitudes of heat transfer rate are appreciably changed with the heat generation or absorption parameter. In addition, results are presented for the transient skin friction, couple stress and heat transfer rate with the variations of the Richardson number, the vortex viscosity parameter, the pressure gradient parameter and the magnetic field parameter.

In the present article, magneto-micropolar nanofluid flow with suction or injection in a porous medium over a stretching sheet for the heat and mass transfer is analyzed numerically. Both Hall and ion-slip effects are considered along with variable thermal diffusivity. The governing partial differential equations are transformed to ordinary differential equations using usual similarity transformations. These coupled non-linear differential equations are solved using the shooting method. Effects of prominent parameter on velocities, temperature and concentration are discussed graphically. Numerical values of skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are also tabulated and discussed.

Opis:
W referacie omówiono i przedstawiono rozwiązanie numeryczne równania Reynoldsa opisującego laminarny, stacjonarny przepływ czynnika smarującego o strukturze mikropolarnej w szczelinie wzdłużnego łożyska ślizgowego.
This paper presents the results of the numerical solution for the Reynolds equation for laminar, steady oil flow in a slide plane bearing gap. Lubrication oil is fluid with micropolar structure. Materials engineering and tribology development helps to introduce oils with a compound structure (together with micropolar structure) as lubricating factors. Exploitation requirements incline designers to use special oil refining additives, to change viscosity properties. As experimental studies show, most of the refining lubricating fluids can be included as fluids of non-Newtonian properties with microstructure. In modelling properties and structures of micropolar liquid, one can introduce a dimensionless parameter within the terminal chance conversion of a micropolar liquid to a Newtonian liquid. The results are shown on diagrams of hydrodynamic pressure and capacity forces in dimensionless form in dependence on coupling number N2 and the characteristic dimensionless length of micropolar fluid μ1. Presented calculations are limited to isothermal models of bearing with infinite breadth.

Opis:
A plain linear penetrable contracting sheet with slip over a micro-polar liquid with a stagnation-point flow is analyzed. Through similarity mapping, the mathematical modeling statements are transformed as ODE’s and numerical results are found by shooting techniques. The varying impacts of physical quantities on the momentum, micro-rotation, and temperature were demonstrated through graphs. The computed measures including shear and couple stress with distinct measures of factors involved in this proposed problem are presented through a table.

Opis:
This paper concerns an analytical study of an infinite expanse of uniform flow of steady axisymmetric creeping flow of an incompressible micropolar fluid around the permeable sphere assuming a nonhomogeneous boundary condition for microrotation vector. It is assumed that microrotation vector is proportional to the rotation rate of velocity vector. The stream function solutions for the flow fields are obtained in the terms of modified Bessel’s functions and Gegenbauer functions. Continuity of normal velocity, no-slip condition, non-zero microrotation vector on the sphere, uniform velocity at infinity are the different boundary conditions used to determine the flow fields explicitly. The microrotation component, pressure field, bounds of permeability parameter and drag force experienced by the permeable sphere are calculated. Dependence of the drag force on different fluid parameters is presented graphically and discussed. It is found that drag force decreases with increasing spin parameter. Several cases of interest are deduced from the present analysis.

The present investigation is concerned with the effect of two temperatures on reflection coefficients in a micropolar thermoelastic solid half space. With two relaxation times, reflection of plane waves impinging obliquely at a plane interface of the micropolar generalized thermoelastic solid half space with two temperatures is investigated. The incident wave is assumed to be striking at the plane surface after propagating through the micropolar generalized thermoelastic solid with two temperatures. Amplitude ratios of the various reflected waves are obtained in closed form and it is found that these are functions of angle of incidence, frequency and are affected by the elastic properties of the media. The effect of two temperatures is shown on these amplitude ratios for a specific model.

Opis:
This paper presents a study of a hydromagnetic free convection flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid past a vertical plate through a porous medium with a heat source, taking into account the homogeneous chemical reaction of first order. A uniform magnetic field has also been considered in the study which acts perpendicular to the porous surface of the above plate. The analysis has been done by assuming varying permeability of the medium and the Rosseland approximation has been used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. Numerical results are presented graphically in the form of velocity, micro- rotation, concentration and temperature profiles, the skin-friction coefficient, the couple stress coefficient, the rate of heat and mass transfers at the wall for different material parameters. The study clearly demonstrates how a chemical reaction influences the above parameters under given conditions.

Opis:
The reflection and refraction phenomenon of propagation of waves in couple stress micropolar thermoviscous elastic solid media with independent viscoelastic and micropolar properties have been studied. The structure of the model has been taken such that the plane interface is divides the given media into two half spaces in perfect contact. Here, we find that there are five waves, one of them is propagating independently while others are set of two coupled waves travelling with different speeds. Energy ratios, reflection and refraction coefficients relative to numerous reflected and refracted waves have been investigated when set of two coupled longitudinal waves and set of two coupled transverse waves strike at the interface through the solid medium. The inequality of energy ratios, refraction coefficients and reflection coefficients are evaluated numerically and presented graphically under three theories of thermoelasticity, namely, Green-Lindsay theory (GL), Lord-Shulman theory (LS), Coupled theory (CT) versus angular frequency and angle of incidence.

The present investigation is concerned with a two dimensional axisymmetric problem in a homogeneous isotropic micropolar porous thermoelastic circular plate by using the eigen value approach. The Laplace and Hankel transform are used to solve the problem. The expression of displacements, microrotation, volume fraction field, temperature distribution and stresses are obtained in the transformed domain subjected to thermomechanical sources. A computer algorithm is developed for numerical computations. To obtain the resulting quantities in a physical domain, a numerical inversion technique is used. The resulting quantities are depicted graphically for a specific model. Some special cases are also deduced.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the problem of an incompressible axisymmetric creeping flow caused by a porous spherical particle in a spherical cavity filled with micropolar fluid. Depending on the kind of cell model, appropriate boundary conditions are used on the surface of sphere and spherical cavity. Drag force on the porous particle in the presence of a cavity is calculated to determine the correction factor to the Stokes law. A general expression for the hydrodynamic force acting on the porous sphere and, hence, for the wall correction factor of the sphere are obtained. The special cases of the porous sphere in viscous fluid, zero permeability solid sphere in micropolar fluid and viscous fluid are obtained in open and closed cavity respectively.
