The main aim of this work was to obtain a copper matrix surface composite using friction stir processing (FSP). The reinforced phase was SiC particles with an average size of 5 mm. The effect of the reinforcement on the microstructure, hardness and wear behaviour were analysed. The friction treatment was carried out using a truncated cone-shaped tool with a threaded side surface. Multi-chamber technology was used to produce the composite microstructure in the copper surface layer. Changes in the material microstructure were assessed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Comparative measurement of the hardness of the initial and treated material as well as wear resistance tests were also carried out. A favourable effect of the surface treatment on the microstructure and properties of the copper was found. As a result of the friction treatment there was strong grain refinement in the copper surface layer. The average grain size in the stirring zone was about 3 mm and was over 21 times smaller than the average grain size in the initial material. Intensive dispersion of the SiC particles in the modified layer was also found, leading to the formation of a copper matrix composite. The effect of microstructural changes in the surface layer of the material and formation of the surface composite was an over two-fold increase in the hardness of the material and an increase in wear resistance.

Opis:
The influence of the surface metal fiber (SMF) arrangement on the shielding effectiveness (SE) of electromagnetic shielding fabric (EMSF) is important, but there is no reasonable description method for it at present, making the further exploration of the relationship between SMF and SE difficult. In order to scientifically describe the SMF arrangement of EMSF, this paper constructs a binary feature matrix of SMF based on a previous study of SMF region recognition. According to the feature matrix, three parameters of the exposure ratio, the discrete mean and disorder degree are proposed and the calculation equations for the three parameters given. Experiments were designed and testing samples determined to test the SE, and the exposure ratio, discrete mean and disorder degree of each sample are calculated. The relationship between the three parameters and the SE is analysed for effectiveness validation of the three parameters. Results show that the exposure ratio, discrete mean and disorder degree can describe three aspects of the SMF arrangement: the percentage content, porosity and orientation, which are positively correlated, negatively correlated and positively correlated to the SE, respectively. The research in this paper provides a basis for the study of the shielding mechanism, the transmission model, the shielding rule and the rapid non-destructive evaluation of the EMSF, and puts forward a new idea for the study of shielding theory and the application of the EMSF.
Ze względu na istotny wpływ rozmieszczenia włókien metalowych (SMF) na skuteczność ekranowania (SE) tkanin osłonowych (EMSF) w pracy przedstawiono macierz binarną opartą na trzech parametrach włókien metalowych tj.: współczynniku ekspozycji, średniej wartości odległości między włóknami metalowymi i stopniu ich nieuporządkowania. Analizowano zależności pomiędzy wyżej wymienionymi parametrami a skutecznością ekranowania. Przedstawione wyniki stanowią podstawę do opracowania szybkiej i nieniszczącej metody oceny skuteczność ekranowania oraz do dalszych badań mechanizmu ekranowania.

The work shows the results of examinations conducted to ascertain the influence of the working power of a vacuum induction crucible furnace (ICF) and a furnace with a cold crucible(CCF), on the surface area of liquid Al-Zn alloy molten within these devices. It was determined that the increase of the value of this parameter causes the increase of the liquid alloys surface area. In the case of smelting alloy inside a crucible furnace the increase of power from 8 to 22 kW causes the increase of liquid alloy surface from 88 to 155 cm2. For a furnace with a cold crucible, the power increase from 70 to 130 kW causes the increase of the alloy surface from 280 to 330,3 cm2. For all power values a larger increase in surface area was observed in crucible furnaces (around two times). In cases of cold crucible furnaces, this increase was around 20%. Additionally, based on the examination results the way in which the surface area of liquid alloy can intensify the undesirable process of zinc fuming away, was discussed. It has been demonstrated that the process of zinc elimination from the examined alloy is more intensive while using a cold crucible induction furnace.

The paper presents the results of theoretical studies influence of non-uniform temperature distribution along the feedstock length to the unit friction force working on the metal contact surface with the roll change during the round bars 70 mm in diameter continuous rolling process. This value is one of the major factors affecting the grooves wear during the rolling process. The studies were carried out based on the actual engineering data for 160 × 160 mm square cross-section feedstock of steel S355J0. Numerical modelling of the rolling process was performed using Forge2008®, a finite-element based computer program.

We numerically studied artifact issues on near-field imaging of field intensity on metal nanostruc-tures (isolated ridges and slits in a continuous film) with an apertured probe. It is shown for the latter case that the interaction between neighboring slits via propagating surface plasmon waves (e.g., surface plasmon wave interferences) makes the probe-imaged field intensity highly condi-tional in reflection of the unperturbed field. As surface plasmon behaviors and probe imaging processes are polarization-sensitive and the field components are correlated, a model analysis of the partial field components elucidates their relations, which can help to derive the unperturbed near-field image from the probed one.

Nowadays, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is being considered as a rapid and powerful vibrational spectroscopy technique for chemical analysis of materials. The Very high incensement in the intensities of the Raman signal allows for application of that method for chemical analysis of nanostructured surfaces covered with suitable enhancing substrates. For SERS measurements, the substrate plays an essential role because it provides a localized metal surface plasmon resonance enhancement of analyte molecules. Moreover, the use of SERS has a great potential to overcome the Raman spectroscopy weaknesses connected with intensity problems and, therefore, can be applied to the field of heterogeneous catalysts. This article reviews the application of nanoparticles substrates as a ground for SERS enhancement. The article also focuses on the recent progress in SERS characterization of catalytic materials. Recent developments in the field of catalytic material characterization for selected tested molecules allow for performing valuable and reproducible SERS experiments on working catalysts in the reaction environment.

The paper is a review of the previous investigations concerning the influence of graphite particles both on the casting properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The work presents the examination results of casting properties (i.e. castability and shrinkage) of the MMCs with matrices of a selected aluminium alloy reinforced with graphite particles. There is also presented the influence of graphite particles on the surface tension and viscosity of the flowing and filling the mould composite suspension. The suspensions containing various percentages of graphite particles (namely 5%, 10%, or 15% in volume) were prepared in order to perform the above mentioned examinations. Castability (fluidity) of these suspensions was measured in two ways, i.e. by means of both the spiral test and the rod test, while their shrinkage was determined with the use of a device designed and assembled in the Department of Foundry Engineering, CUT. The device enables to determine changes in the length of a casting during its solidification with respect to the specified length of the test rod. The surface tension was determined by the wedge casting method consisting in the pouring of metal into an open shell mould with the cavity of wedge geometry, the sharp edge being perpendicular to the free metal surface. The change in viscosity corresponding to the change in graphite particles percentage was calculated from Einstein’s equation. The results of examinations show that the introduction of reinforcing graphite particles results in both a significant increase in the viscosity of the flowing suspension and a considerable decrease in its castability. The greater dimensional stability of castings was observed, i.e. the shrinkage of composite castings was smaller than the shrinkage of matrix alloy itself. An increase in surface tension index value with an increase in volume percentage of graphite particles in composite was also noticed.

In this study the research on deformability of AlMg alloys with high Mg contents in extrusion was carried out. The different shapes from AlMg alloys containing 3.5%, 4.5% and 5.5% of Mg were extruded on 500 T semi-industrial press by using one-hole and multi-hole flat dies. The extrudates surface quality was under investigations in relation with the temperature-speed parameters of the extrusion process. The metal exit speed was estimated depending on the extrudates shape, wall thickness and Mg content. The alloy’s border solidus and liquidus temperatures were also determined.
