Opis:
The article deals with the analysis of the split of mercury present in raw coals between commercial products and wastes in 21 Polish collieries producing hard steam coal (Upper Silesia Coal Basin). The coal cleaning constitutes the first step in the reduction of mercury emissions in coal utilisation (mainly combustion) processes by decreasing the charge of mercury in the commercial products in comparison to the raw coal. The ratio of this reduction depends, first of all, on the technological characteristics of raw coal, as well as on the range of the applied coal cleaning method. The charges of mercury in exploited raw coals are split in coal preparation processes (mainly coal cleaning processes) between commercial products and waste products. The mercury content in commercial products has been analysed together with the emissions from coal combustion processes. In the second case, tools for the reduction of emissions have already been employed. Characteristics of waste products, in particular the mercury content, have been under consideration to a less extent so far. Data presented in the article allows for better, broadened with the waste products, analyses, understanding and assessment of all environmental mercury originated risks, arising from coal production, including coal cleaning. Presented data generate also the need for discussion of such terms like: “mercury reduction in commercial coal products” and “mercury emissions reduction”, as the result of coal cleaning processes.

Opis:
Objectives Gold miners use mercury to extract gold from ore adding liquid mercury to the milled gold-containing ore. This results in a mercury-gold compound, called amalgam. Miners smelt this amalgam to obtain gold, vaporizing it and finally inhaling the toxic mercury fumes. The objective was to merge and analyze data from different projects, to identify typical signs and symptoms of chronic inorganic mercury exposure. Material and Methods Miners and community members from various artisanal small-scale gold mining areas had been examined (Philippines, Mongolia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Indonesia). Data of several health assessments were pooled. Urine, blood and hair samples were analyzed for mercury (N = 1252). Questionnaires, standardized medical examinations and neuropsychological tests were used. Participants were grouped into: Controls (N = 209), living in an exposed area (N = 408), working with mercury as panners (N = 181), working with mercury as amalgam burners (N = 454). Chi2 test, linear trend test, Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rho, and analysis of variance tests were used. An algorithm was used to define participants with chronic mercury intoxication. Results Mean mercury concentrations in all exposed subgroups were elevated and above threshold limits, with amalgam burners showing highest levels. Typical symptoms of chronic metallic mercury intoxication were tremor, ataxia, coordination problems, excessive salivation and metallic taste. Participants from the exposed groups showed poorer results in different neuropsychological tests in comparison to the control group. Fifty-four percent of the high-exposed group (amalgam burners) were diagnosed as being mercury-intoxicated, compared to 0% within the control group (Chi2 p < 0.001). Conclusions Chronic mercury intoxication, with tremor, ataxia and other neurological symptoms together with a raised body burden of mercury was clinically diagnosed in exposed people in artisanal small-scale mining areas. The mercury exposure needs to be urgently reduced. Health care systems need to be prepared for this emerging problem of chronic mercury intoxication among exposed people. Opis:
The aim of the conducted research was to determine the mercury content in the upper layers of soil taken from the areas with various impact of anthropogenic pressure. The article presents the content of mercury in the top layers of soils from selected areas of two districts of Warsaw, ie Ursynów and Mokotów. These areas are heavily influenced by the human activity. For comparison, a soil sample was also taken from the area of the Solska Forest, which is an example of an area with a negligible impact of anthropogenic pressure. The mercury content in the analyzed soil samples taken from the area of Warsaw ranged from 0.0334 mg·kg-1 to 0.4004 mg·kg-1 in Ursynów, while the soils from the Mokotów area contained from 0.2320 mg·kg-1 to 1.3098 mg·kg-1. For comparison, the sample from the Solska Forest area contained 0.2544 mg Hg·kg-1. In order to avoid uncontrolled re-emission and, as a consequence, possible accumulation of this element in the environment, it is necessary to continue monitoring the level of mercury pollution, among others, in soil.

Opis:
Toxic sources of mercury emission into the environment and human organisms were given. The strategy of Union concerning mercury as well as some of its decisions were presented. In the case of people not exposed to mercury professionally diet rich in fish and dental amalgam are the main sources of mercury. Some results of studies of mercury content in fish were presented. Current regulations in force determining maximal acceptable norms for mercury content in fish, fish products and diet supplements were given. It was pointed out that 75-95% of mercury in fish and seafood is in the form of methylmercury, which is the strong neurotoxin, the current PTWI norm (EFSA) is 1.6 žg of methylmercury compounds per a kilo of body mass (1.6 žg/kg bw/week). The amounts of mercury found in ford products other than fish and seafood are not so worrying because in the case of these products mercury does not appear in the form of methylmercury, which poses less threat. Mercury amalgams used as dental fillers were characterized. UE does not recommend amalgams as dental fillers. Even those in favour using claim that a man should not have more than 6-7 of such fillers them. So far no studies proved that the amount of mercury released from a amalgam dental fillers into organism is can lead to poisoning. However, authors of many studies of mercury content in hair or urine carried out in 2 groups of people which and without amalgam dental fillers found out that the content of mercury was noticeably higher among those with the amalgam fillers. It was recognized that using amalgam without gamma -2 phase would reduce the exposure to mercury. Amalgam dental fillers should not be used in the case of pregnant women and people suffering from kidney disorders. Some attention was paid to mercury compounds which can possibly appear as preservation substances (mainly thimerosal) in some cosmetics, medicines and vaccines. Methods of mercury analysis were presented. 57 publications were cited.

High concentrations of mercury (Hg), reaching astonishing values in two cases, have recently been detected in Middle and Late Triassic fossil reptile bones, housed for over 100 years in several Polish museum collections. Since no correlation between either the life modes of these taxa or their burial environment was observed, the studied contaminations seem to be associated with housing conditions. The specimens were kept for an extended amount of time in boxes, in which they were stored soon after finding. A proximity of mercury-containing materials, like mercury fulminate, and unstandardized conditions of storage and conservation of the remains may result in contamination of porous bone with mercury. A detailed knowledge about the housing history of old museum collections has great importance to their prospective studies.

Opis:
Artykuł traktuje o problemach związanych z emisją rtęci do środowiska w procesach użytkowania węgla kamiennego.
The paper concerns the issues associated with the mercury emissions to the environment during hard coal utilization processes. The basic reason for undertaking the topic of mercury in coal and for writing the paper was the disproportion between the statistical data on the amounts of utilized coal and the mercury emissions in the USA and Poland. The authors point out the divergence between published statistical data on mercury emissions in Poland. The divergence, possibly, results from the lack of reliable data concerning the mercury content in utilized coal. The literature review shows, that the mean mercury content in hard coals, exploited in Poland, can be assessed from 70 to 350 ppb. Such data divergences on the mercury content in Polish hard coals can not constitute the basis for reliable assessments of the quantity of mercury emitted to the air due to coal utilization. Additional difficulties have been arising from the lack of knowledge on the mercury distribution in raw coal and from only partial steam coal cleaning in Poland. There is also the lack of detailed knowledge concerning the behavior of mercury during the clearing of Polish hard coals. Additionally, the impacts of mercury bearing mining, coal preparation and power industry wastes, are poorly recognized.

The study presents measurement results of the concentration of total gaseous mercury (TGM) in the atmospheric air of 2010–2011 coming from the only measurement station in the Mazovia Province, the Granica-KPN station (λE 20°27'20" φN 52°◦17'09.088"). A series of measurement results of mercury concentration was used to estimate the model which identifies the influence of chosen measurement results, both imission and meteorological ones, on concentrations of gaseous mercury in the atmospheric air. Due to the number of measurements limited to 2 years, the study made an attempt to perform an initial evaluation of seasonal factors. The analyses used included: the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and a path for the Generalised Regression Model (GRM). Average concentration of TGM in 2010–2011 amounted to 1.52 ng m-3 which is very close to the background values obtained in other European countries. Seasonal dependence of TGM concentration was observed; in the cold half-year the TGM concentration was higher compared to the summer season. The obtained results of identifying the PCA and GRM models enable presenting the following synthetic, final conclusions: The employed models of PCA and GRM show that key factors which shape mercury concentration are the following: suspended dust PM10, gaseous pollutants: SO2 and NO2, and meteorological parameters: air temperature, relative humidity of air and solar radiation intensity. The index of the phenomenon, i.e. the first principal component, identifies this relationship as the strongest and most significant, but it is worth noting that there occurs inversely proportional influence of air temperature and solar radiation intensity. The GRM model shows the occurrence of seasonality in monthly periods and in total as an interaction of the year and the months, which is further confirmed in the PCA model through “distribution” of the effect of specific factors over successive principal components. Ozone, for instance, is connected with the first three components to a different degree (-0.6 with Component 1, 0.3 with Component 2 and 0.62 with Component 3) and not with the first or only one of the components. The PCA model is a linear relationship within each component separately and the relationships, being orthogonal to each other, account for successive parts of the total variance. The variables: ozone, wind velocity and atmospheric pressure are not related to the index of the phenomenon, i.e. to the first component. They are related to next principal components, which may prove a strong irregularity of the relationships or the occurrence of seasonality. To build the model, the study used data from a period of two years: 2010 and 2011. It does not give a sufficient number of observations for stable identification of seasonality (at least 5 repetitive periods) and further correlations of factors, i.e. successive principal components. Those components may indicate not so much the absence of measurement correlations with mercury, but a non-linear character or a strong dependence on various seasonal influences, such as yearly, seasonal or monthly fluctuations.

Determination of trace elements in combusted materials has always been an interesting field of environmental studies. Particulate matter, in particular, is a serious problem which, can lead to air pollution especially by heavy metals emissions in urban and industrial areas. There is a considerable concern about the elevated level of mercury released during combustion and the proportion of anthropogenic mercury in the environment. Nowadays, small-scale installations have been identified as a significant source-pathway for mercury pollution, particularly those that use coal. A total amount of mercury was determined using Mercury Analyzer. The investigated material consists of bottom ash, fly ash, slag, soot or dust. The obtained results varied according to the type of the material and plant. The developed methodology was checked by carrying out the analysis of certificate material of Soil NCS ZC 73001 and the reference material of Soil-7.

This paper presents the results of the investigation associated with the determination of mercury content in Polish hard coal and lignite samples. Those coals are major fuels used for electricity generation in Poland. The results indicated that the average content of mercury in the coal samples was roughly about 100 ng/g. Apart from the determination of the mercury contents a detailed ultimate and proximate analysis of the coal samples was also carried out. The relationships between the mercury content and ash, as well as fixed carbon, volatile matter, sulfur, and high heating value of the coal samples were also established. Furthermore, the effect of coal enrichment was also investigated, and it was found that the enrichment process enabled the removal of up to 75% of the coal mercury from the samples.

The aim of the study was to analyse the balance of mercury (Hg), i.e. the content of this metal, its inflow and outflow, in the ecosystem of the Bay of Puck. Based on literature data and the results of the author’s own study, this analysis has shown that the main source of Hg pollution is the atmosphere. An estimated 1.1–3.8 kg of Hg enters annually from the atmosphere, whereas the mass of Hg carried there by river waters per annum is about 7 times lower (0.13–0.44 kg year−1). The 0.9 –2.7 kg year−1 of Hg released from Bay of Puck waters to the atmosphere is of the same order as the quantity deposited from the atmosphere. The total amount of Hg deposited in the upper (0–5 cm deep) layer of the sediments has been estimated at 240–320 kg, its rate of entry being c. 2.25–2.81 kg year−1. 0.25–1.25 kg year−1 of Hg are released from the bottom sediments to bulk water, while 0.61–0.97 kg remains confined in aquatic organisms, including 133 g in the phytobenthos, 2.6 g in the zooplankton, 420–781 g in the macrozoobenthos and 34 g in fish.

Coal consumption secures more than 50% of needs of Polish economy for primary energy carriers and the consumption of hard coal alone amounts 70-80 million Mg annually. Almost 14% of hard coal consumption - up to 11 million Mg per year - fall to households in Poland. Coal combustion in domestic furnaces and boilers is regarded as the main source of emissions into the atmosphere, referred to as the low-stack emission. The matter of the paper is the assessment of the emission of mercury from the households sector as the result of coal combustion. The results of the assessment were collated with GUS data on mercury emission from this sector. A change in the annual emission of mercury from the household sector has been proposed and justified, assuming that the whole low-stack emission of mercury is the result of coal combustion only.

Opis:
The determination of the composition of gas mixtures, especially those analytes which exist, for example, as contaminants for the main components of the gas mixture, very often requires the concentration of the analyte so that it can be quantified. The analysis of gaseous environmental samples, including air and air samples at workplaces, is difficult, which results from: the need to work with samples with an extensive matrix and heterogeneous distribution of pollutants, the stability of the analyte and the presence of interfering substances (interferents) in the sample. On the other hand, the analysis of trace components of gaseous fuels is difficult due to the need to collect a suitably concentrated sample so that these components can be quantified. This article provides an overview and analysis of the methods used for the collection and determination of mercury in gas mixtures. Currently, there are standardized mercury collection and determination methodologies dedicated to matrices such as air, workplace air, waste gases or natural gas. These are both manual and fully automated methods. Most of the methods described in the literature on the subject consist of two stages, i.e. the stage of collecting a sample for a solid or liquid sorbent and the stage of desorption and determination of the mercury content in the collected sample using methods dedicated to the analysis of this element. The most frequently used methods for collecting mercury samples in gas mixtures are: the gold amalgamation method and the sorption methods on powder sorbents (such as activated carbon, hopcalite, impregnated silica gel), glass fibers, impregnated cellulose filters and liquid sorbents (such as e.g. acids). The methods of sample desorption are varied and depend on the material on which the analyte has been absorbed and the selected mercury determination method. Three methods are mainly used to analyze samples for mercury content, i.e. the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry method (CV-AAS), the cold vapor fluorescence atomic spectrometry method (CV-AFS) and the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method (ICP-MS). However, it should be kept in mind that although the methods available and used for the analysis of mercury content in gas are standardized, they are not resistant to the presence of hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulphide in the tested samples. These are the compounds that are most often mentioned as substances interfering in the determination of mercury in gases using the above-mentioned methods.

Mercury is among the heavy metals that have been reported to cause devastating health problems worldwide. The present work was aimed at investigating the effects of mercury chloride on the cytomorphology of the peritoneal macrophages of rat. The current study characterizes the mechanism by which mercury, a toxic metal, induces death in rat macrophages. In mercury treated group significant numbers of peritoneal macrophages were found to be pyknotic. The cellular death was confirmed by membrane blebbing and membrane rupture. Percentages of cells showing membrane blebbing was increased significantly after treatment. The result indicated mercury induced toxicity may affect macrophage mediated immunity. So macrophage activation during heavy metal mediated reaction is an interesting area to be explored in future researches.

Opis:
The article presents the results of investigations focused on the determination of mercury content in gas and solid samples. The emission of Hg was the result of coal combustion. The investigations were carried out in the selected power generation facilities operated with pulverized coal and circulating fluidized bed boilers. Analysis was carried out for the flue gases, as well as fuel and sorbent samples and the by-products of the combustion process (fly ash, slag, bottom ash, and the products of wet desulfurization technology). The determination of mercury content in solid samples was carried out using Lumex RA-915+ spectrometer with RP-91C attachment. The measurements of the mercury concentration in the flue gases were performed according to the cold vapor technique. The analysis of the results indicated that the main source of mercury is coal, but significant concentration was also determined for the biomass co-combusted in one of the facilities. Considerable amounts were also determined in fly ash and wet FGD (flue gas desulfurization) samples.

Opis:
The paper contains reference literature analysis concerning mercury content in Polish bituminous coal and post-mining waste as well as the impact of mercury content on the environment. The aim of the paper was to determine the occurrence of the risk of contamination of the environment with mercury compounds found in demolition bituminous coal landfills. Mercury, due to its toxic properties has been classified among the most dangerous substances to human health. There are three groups of sources of mercury release into the environment: natural, anthropogenic and remission. Coal mining, its processing and use in the energy sector has the greatest relevance regarding the pollution of the environment with mercury compounds in Poland. A review of reference literature shows that the average content of mercury in Polish bituminous coal varies within a wide range of 41e399 ppb, which is conditional on the origin, age and type of coal. The production of coal has led to a number of facilities in the form of structurally and age-varied landfills, heaps and mining waste dumps. The content of mercury in postmining waste is in the range from approximately 55 to 380 ppb. The problem of environmental contamination with mercury has attracted considerable interest due to the effects that its concentration have in the biosphere. On the basis of the existing data it has been found that the content of mercury in soils in areas degraded by mining and processing of coal is even 10e16 times higher, compared to the geochemical background. It is necessary to conduct research in this area due to the limited results of research on mercury content in deposited waste from the preparation and flotation of Polish bituminous coals and the potential harmful effect of mercury on the environment. The paper is dedicated to the mercury content in waste from the extraction and processing of bituminous coal.

Opis:
Objectives To investigate 4 loci of 3 HSP70 genes in caustic soda production plant former workers, who have been exposed to metallic mercury vapors for a long time, and including numerous cases of chronic mercury intoxication (CMI). Material and Methods Polymorphisms in HSP70 gene family members (HSP1A1 (+190G/C, rs1043618), HSPA1B (+1267A/G and +2074G/C, rs1061581) and HSP1AL (+2437T/C, rs2227956)) genes were studied among 120 male workers involved in caustic soda production by mercury electrolysis at 2 plants in Eastern Siberia. These subjects had been chronically exposed to metallic mercury vapors for > 5 years and divided into 3 groups based on the occurrence and time of the CMI diagnosis, or absence of this disease. The Group 1 consisted of individuals (N = 46), who had had contact with mercury but were not diagnosed with the CMI. The Group 2 included workers (N = 56), who were diagnosed with the CMI longer than 14 years ago. The Group 3 consisted of the subjects (N = 18), who had been diagnosed with the CMI 3–5 years ago. The logistic regression analysis was used for 3 genetic models with and without adjustment for age and duration of mercury vapor exposure. Results We found that genotypes СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) had a high predictive risk of the CMI development (adjusted odds ratio ($\text{OR}_\text{adj}$) = 5.58, p = 0.026 and $\text{OR}_\text{adj}$ = 14.7, p = 0.0015, respectively). Twelve individuals with the CMI had a specific combination of СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) genotypes, which strongly associated with the diagnosis ($\text{OR}_\text{adj}$ = 12.3, p = 0.0285). Moreover, significant association with the CMI was also obtained for the haplotype G-C of 1267A/G and 190G/C polymorphisms (OR = 2.1, p = 0.018). Conclusions The association of СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) genotypes and their combination for the CMI individuals suggests the role for HSPA1 genes in mercury-dependent mechanisms of the CMI development and progression. Opis:
Comparison studies have been performed on determination of total mercury in wet deposition by two analytical methods. The studies were carried out in the period of March to November 2009 at the sampling point located near intensive traffic in Southern Poland (Zabrze). The difference between these two methods consisted in preparation of samples for analysis and in the type of measuring device. In both cases, the method of cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS) after reduction of SnCl2 was used by means of a mercury analyzer model MA-2 produced by Nippon Instruments Corp. or of a mercury analyzer RA-915+ produced by LUMEX. Good agreement of the results have been obtained (relative error of the determination between the methods varied from 18% to 40%). Both analytical methods can be considered equivalent and used as a reference to each other. Quantity assessment of mercury wet deposition in southern Poland is lower than in 90 s, but still much higher in comparison with other countries in Europe and worldwide (ca. 30 μg·m -2·year -1.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess the mercury concentration in bottom sediments, collected from eight reservoirs located in south-eastern Poland. A DMA-80 Mercury Analyser was used for the analysis of the concentration of mercury in bottom sediments. Concentration of mercury in sediments was between 0.01–0.18 mg∙kg−1. The research results show that 13 samples are above the Polish Hg background level. Only 9 samples are below the background level. Generally, the sediments belonged to class I and II (unpolluted and moderately polluted sediments). The concentration of mercury in bottom sediments follows the order: Rybnik (highest) > Bagna Rzeszowskie > Rzeszów > Ożanna > Brzóza Stadnicka > Brzóza Królewska > Głuchów > Narożniki (lowest). The low mercury content in sediments is related to absent or limited anthropogenic sources of this metal. Elevated concentrations of Hg in bottom sediments of the reservoirs in Rybnik and Bagna Rzeszowskie are related to their proximity to large agglomerations and industrial plants. Organic matter was likely to be the most important factors controlling the concentration and distribution of mercury in the studied sediments.

Fatty acids derived from fish and fish oils have a strong beneficial effect on cardiovascular health and neurodevelopment. Dietary omega 3 fatty acids prevent cardiovascular disease development by the influence on eicosanoid synthesis, cytokine and growth factors production, lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, endothelial relaxation. They have a strong antiarrhytmic action on the heart. Enhanced consumption of fish derived fatty acids is related to the low incidence of cardiovascular events and sudden cardiac deaths. High content of mercury in some fishes may attenuate the beneficial effects of omega 3 fatty acids on cardiovascular health and also on neurodevelopment of newborns and children

Objectives: The aim of this work is to perform comparative estimation of cytokines levels in chlorinated hydrocarbons and metallic mercury exposure in employees in the dynamics of neurologic disorders formation. Material and Methods: The contents of cytokines IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, INF-γ were determined in blood sera using the method of hardphasic immunoferment analysis. The significance of different average values was assessed using the parametric and non-parametric criteria - Student (in normal distribution) and Mann-Whitney tests taking into account the Bonferonni correction (non-difference from normal distribution). Results: It was shown that, a number of inflammation mediators with the dominance, depending on the expositional toxicant and expression of neurological deficiency, take part in the neurointoxication development. Healthy employees show pro-inflammatory responses with different expression degree, which dominate in the immune regulation processes regardless of the expositional factors (metallic mercury vapors and chlorinated hydrocarbons). Conclusions: The production intensity and interconnection between the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines may change in the occupational injuries of the nervous system development process. The decrease in the serum concentrations of cytokines along with the increase of clinical manifestation severity may prove dysregulation of the immune system, which promotes maintaining of pathological process and progradient process of neurointoxication. The most obvious is the imbalance of cytokines in the employees exposed to metallic mercury (in all the examined groups) that increases neurointoxication in the distant period.

In this paper, there was investigated the content of mercury in soil, plant, water, and hydrobionts in Kyiv and in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region. Studied territory is characterized by high anthropogenic load. The solid waste landfill in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region was characterized by the highest content of Hg in soil. Hg concentration in Taraxacum officinale L. was the highest among all studied plants, hence the possibility of recommending this species for phytoremediation of mercury-polluted soils. Mercury bioaccumulation of aquatic organisms (Blicca bjoerkna L., Esox lucius L., Ceratophyllum demersum L.) was much higher than in terrestrial organisms, which indicates the significantly prevailing level of availability and accumulation of mercury for aquatic species in the water environment.
