In modern narratives, the island of Spinalonga appears an attractive tourist destination with an interesting and enigmatic history. In fact, Spinalonga is a memory space, encumbered with past political decisions and medical negligence. This is the story of the great confinement, the isolation of the sick who were symbolically killed. Meanwhile, the photos shared on Instagram show the island in a completely different light. The article seeks to answer the following questions: Does the behavior of Instagram users disrupt the culture of memory and how do these photos (digital representations of memory) influence the image of the island? To this end, I outline the history of the island in the context of exclusion mechanisms for those with Hansen's disease. I discuss the issues of dark tourism, social photo and desemantization of communication. I juxtapose the whole thing with the examples of photos from Spinalonga published on Instagram in 2022.

The paper ponders over the issue of memory and urban space. It shows how these categories have been discussed in the literature and how they are connected to the problem of place identity. The paper also highlights the need to appreciate and assess the physical aspect of objects, which act as memory markers in the urban space. The author argues that what is being memorialised and conveyed as meaning is the past lived experience. As a case in point, two memory acts are analysed in the paper, clearly showing the interdependence of various temporalities in the anniversary celebrations. In the festivities celebrating the 100th (in 1881) and 150th (in 1931/2) anniversaries of the consecration of the Lutheran church in Warsaw, the capital of the Kingdom of Poland in the Russian partition and later the capital of a resurrected independent Polish state after 1918, the different present-oriented needs were mirrored in the narratives and commemorations of the past. Idiosyncratic visions of the past help make the small and vulnerable community of Lutherans in an otherwise primarily Roman Catholic environment more coherent, as its members may lay claim to history and construct and stabilise their identification process as descendants of past generations. Moreover, the material fabric of the church seems to be an indispensable factor. The parishioners’ lived experience appears to be a crucial component of commemorations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

L’objectif de l’article est de questionner, dans une approche comparative, le lien entre la mémoire et l’espace dans les récits autobiographiques et testimoniaux d’Anna Langfus, Bruno Durocher et Piotr Rawicz. Dans leurs textes, l’espace s’érige en un des moyens de faire travailler la mémoire et aborder le passé. Il s’agit d’un côté d’une dimension extérieure, dépendante des décisions épistémiques du sujet parlant. Avec ses frontières bien délimitées, l’espace prend soit la forme d’un refuge, d’un « chez moi », soit, au contraire, il devient hostile et menaçant. La deuxième dimension n’opère ni frontières, ni topologies, mais résulte de la découverte de l’animalité de l’homme. Poussée à l’extrême, elle aboutit à une symbiose parfaite ou à une « indiscernabilité » entre le sujet et le lieu. Ainsi, combinant les approches autobiographiques/testimoniales et les perspectives spatiales/territoriales, l’article démontre-t-il le caractère spatial de l’expérience humaine et de la mémoire.
The paper aims at describing and interpreting in comparative approach the works of three Polish‐French writers: Anna Langfus, Bruno Durocher et Piotr Rawicz. I follow the authors of What Is Philosophy in believing that “thinking takes place in the relationship of territory and the earth”. Therefore, my analysis is structured with the Deleuzian notion of territory and demonstrates how memory of wartime is anchored in the geographical and imaginary spaces. On the one hand, it is an external dimension which depends on the epistemic decisions of the subject. With its well-defined borders, the space is represented as a refuge, an “at home”, or, on the contrary, it becomes hostile and threatening. On the other hand, the space is represented as a territory and results from the discovery of the animal nature of man. Combining autobiographical/testimonial approaches and spatial/territorial perspectives, the article demonstrates the spatial character of human experience and memory.

The author addresses the problem of naming the space associated with the Staszic Palace in Warsaw. She argues that along with its name, the square in front of the palace lost its both administrative and social distinctiveness and advocates for its restoration. Her analysis of the naming system, complemented by an investigation of archival sources and a reflection upon the history and cultural significance of selected parts of the palace, reveals a gap in the current naming conventions, which cover only urban areas. The article outlines an original proposal of naming typology for enclosed public places, developed in the course of the work on the selection of names for two auditoria of the Staszic Palace, which remained unnamed until 2020. Furthering the arguments that led to naming the auditoria under the author’s recommendations, she explores the connection between the placename and the meanings inscribed in the imaginary space. The theoretical background of the article has been provided by works of Edward Soja, Michel Foucault and Henri Lefebvre as well as the categories of collective memory of space (Hayden White and Frank Ankersmit) and affective heterotopy, defined by the author in her monograph on the Staszic Palace.

Artykuł to próba zobrazowania istoty wpływu kilku najważniejszych czynników na tożsamość miejsca poprzez pryzmat przywołania konkretnych przestrzeni. Najistotniejsze przywołane składowe to czas, miejsce, krajobraz, pamięć, dźwięk – wzajemne ich współistnienie tworzy w naszym pojmowaniu obraz, który mimo naszego stałego wyobrażenia o nim nieustannie zmienia się in situ. Rozważania podjęte w treści artykułu odnoszą się zarówno do pojęcia tożsamości niezwiązanej z miejscem, jak również do kilku wybranych miejsc w Polsce południowo-wschodniej.
The article attempts to illustrate the essence of the influence of several key factors on the identity of place through the evocation of specific spaces. The most essential components evoked are time, ‑place, landscape, memory, sound: their mutual coexistence creates, in our understanding, an image that, despite our fixed idea, is constantly changing in situ. The reflections undertaken in the content of this article refer both to the notion of identity not linked to any given place and to a few selected places in south-eastern Poland.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie kategorii przestrzeni literackiej potraktowanej tu jako metafora odniesiona raczej do wymiarów doświadczenia tożsamościowego, pamięci i postpamięci niż jako termin spacjologiczny sensu stricto. Przedmiotem rozważań jest powieść Anny Boleckiej Biały kamień, a ściślej – ukryte w niej tropy zatartej i wypartej pamięci o żydowskiej (współ)genealogii dzisiejszej polskości. Analizy poetyki powieściowej prowadzą do ujawnienia wagi postaci kobiecych, które prócz ściśle fabularnych funkcji pełnią też role wielkiej metafory utraconej (żydowskiej) matki dzisiejszej, w dominującym stopniu katolickiej, Polski. Szczególną wagę mają tu obrazy o charakterze abiektalnym, zgodnie z intuicją Julii Kristevej, ujawniające ambiwalentny charakter relacji dziecko-matka i tym samym wskazujące na dialektyczny charakter nie-pamięci (katolickich) Polaków o ich żydowskich korzeniach.
The article analyzes the category of literary space which is understood here rather as a metaphor of experiencing identity, memory and post-memory than as a spatial term sensu stricto. The author reflects on the novel by Anna Bolecka, Biały kamień [White stone], and more specifically on the hidden tropes of the blurred and denied past memories  of Jewish genealogical component of today’s Polishness. The reading of the novel’s poetics demonstrates the importance of female characters that, apart from their function in the plot construction, figuratively signify the lost Jewish mother of today’s, mostly Catholic, Poland. In addition, following the thinking of Julia Kristeva, of special significance are the images of abject art.

Soundscape is a natural acoustic environment of man. Its elements are various constructions, listening impressions, recordings, programmes. While exploring this space, the researcher encounters many interesting aspects related to the contemporary perception of completed events in the form of auditive memory cultures. It can be saved and placed in the media. For example on Radio Olsztyn a public broadcaster from Warmia and Mazury in Poland. Therefore, it is possible to carry out research of the auditive cultural memory based on the radio programmes and their problematic issues. This specific, evolving cultural area of the region is worthy of analysis.

Obecna sytuacja polityczna na Białorusi, a zwłaszcza protesty obywatelskie w przestrzeni miejskiej Mińska skłaniają do podjęcia refleksji nad krajobrazem kulturowym miasta ukształtowanego w totalitaryzmie. Celem artykułu jest zatem analiza jednego z nielicznych przedstawień Mińska w literaturze dostępnej polskiemu czytelnikowi: książki Artura Klinaua Mińsk. Przewodnik po Mieście Słońca [Małaja padarożnaja kniżka pa Goradze Sonca]. W analizie wykorzystano perspektywę socjologii literatury. Zwrócono uwagę na specyfikę gatunku tekstu, jakim jest przewodnik turystyczny. Odwołano się również do ustaleń socjologii dzieciństwa oraz kategorii pamięci biograficznej. Aby zrekonstruować i zrozumieć autorską wizję miasta zawartą w książce Klinaua, na początku przedstawiono, w jaki sposób autor opisuje oswajanie architektonicznej utopii Miasta Słońca z perspektywy dziecka. Następnie wspomniano kategorię walki o przestrzeń, w której orężem są: architektura i założenia urbanistyczne. Przykładową potyczką w tej walce są opisane przez Klinaua losy dzielnicy Niemiga. Podsumowaniem jest przywołanie strategii, do jakich ucieka się autor, broniąc swej biografii przed zawłaszczeniem przez totalitarną utopię.
The current political situation in Belarus, and especially the civil protests in the area of Minsk, encourage reflection on the cultural landscape of the city shaped by totalitarianism. The aim of the article is therefore to analyse one of the few representations of Minsk in the literature available to the Polish reader: the book by Artur Klinau Minsk. A guide to the City of the Sun. The analysis uses the perspective of the sociology of literature. The specificity of the text genre, which is a tourist guide, has been emphasized. The findings of childhood sociology and the category of biographical memory are also referred to. In order to reconstruct and understand the original vision of Minsk, the author first describes how Klinau presents the taming of the architectural utopia of the City of the Sun from a child’s perspective. Next, the category of the fight for space is mentioned, in which the weapons are architecture and urban planning. An example of a skirmish in this fight is the fate of the Niemiga district described by Klinau. The summary is a reference to the strategies Klinau uses to defend his biography against appropriation by a totalitarian utopia.
Сучасная палітычная сітуацыя ў Беларусі, асабліва грамадзянскія пратэсты ў гарадской прасторы Мінска, заахвочваюць да разважанняў над культурным ландшафтам горада, сфарміраваным пры таталітарызме. У сувязі з гэтым мэта артыкула – прааналізаваць адно з нешматлікіх, даступных польскаму чытачу, адлюстраванняў Мінска ў літаратуры, а менавіта твор Артура Клінава Малая падарожная кніжка па Горазе Сонца. Аналіз праводзіўся з перспектывы сацыялогіі літаратуры. Звярталася ўвага на спецыфіку жанру тэкста, якім зʼяўляецца турыстычны даведнік. Выкарыстоўваліся таксама вызначэнні сацыялогіі дзяцінства і катэгорыі біяграфічнай памяці. Дзеля рэканструкцыі і зразумення аўтарскага бачання горада, змешчанага ў кнізе Клінава, на пачатку артыкула разглядаецца, якім чынам аўтар апісвае асваенне архітэктурнай утопіі Горада Сонца з перспектывы дзіцяці. Далей разглядаецца катэгорыя барацьбы за прастору, у якой ролю зброі выконваюць архітэктура і горадабудаўніцтва. Прыкладам сутыкнення у гэтай барацьбе зʼяўляецца апісаны Клінавым лёс раёна Няміга. У высновах пералічваюцца стратэгіі, выкарыстаныя пісьменнікам дзеля абароны сваёй біяграфіі ад падпарадкавання яе таталітарнай утопіяй.

This article deals with different aspects of space in the text of Eugene Vodolazkin’s novel Brisbane as well as in its studies and reception. Successive parts of the research are devoted to lieux de mémoire in autobiographical fiction, cultural understanding of the space of the home and places which traditionally create the image of Kiev and the individual mythology of this city. Space perceived in the way modified by culture is a certain frame in which both the hero of Vodolazkin lives and a receiver reads the novel. It is also an important component of the work’s internal structure, the factor responsible for certain genre associations that determine the direction of the reading process. In all these forms of functioning, space is thematically related to the reflection on death. The author concludes that the understanding of space leads to the rejection of the physical future and the affirmation of eternity understood in a religious way, in line with medieval tradition.

The aim of this essay is to try to apply the theory of researching the literary work created in the 20th century – geopoetics – to the text of the emigration drama by Nikolai Yevreinov. The author points to the difficulty she encounters when using this theory to study drama. She points out that the category of time and space is associated to a higher degree with performance. Nevertheless, the structure of the playwright’s two texts shows connotations in the theory: creating a foreign space and creating a remembered space meets the assumptions of the event-generating and world-giving attitude of the subject.

Anfang der 1990er-Jahre kam eine beachtliche Anzahl junger Schriftsteller mit Migrationshintergrund zum Vorschein, die in der multikulturellen Schweiz entweder auf Deutsch oder Französisch mit literarischem Schreiben begannen. Eine besondere Stellung nimmt unter ihnen Franco Supino (geb. 1965) ein, der mit seinem Debütwerk "Musica Leggera" (1995) einen neuen Trend in der deutschsprachigen Schweizer Literatur bestätigte. Die neue Tendenz besteht in der literarischen Schilderung der kulturellen und ethno-nationalen Identitätsproblematik sowohl der Migrantengeneration als auch deren bereits in der Schweiz geborener Kinder. In dem Beitrag wird am Beispiel des Werkes von Franco Supino die literarische Darstellung der Zugehörigkeitsgefühle und der identitätsstiftenden Erinnerungen an vergangene Momente besprochen, wie sie sich zwischen der ersten und der zweiten Generation der in der Schweiz lebenden Zugewanderten gestalten, wobei der Schwerpunkt der Analyse auf die Vertreter der zweiten, als ‚Secondos‘ bezeichneten Generation gelegt wird, die zwischen der traditionell italienischen Kultur der Eltern und der modernen Schweizer Kultur der 1980er-Jahre ihren Weg zur Identitätsfindung finden müssen.
W okresie od początku lat 1990-tych uwidoczniła się znaczna liczba młodych pisarzy z tłem migracyjnym, którzy zaczęli pisać albo po niemiecku, albo po francusku w wielokulturowej Szwajcarii. Wśród nich szczególną pozycję zajął Franco Supino (ur. 1965), który utworem "Musica Leggera" (1995) potwierdził nowy trend w literaturze niemieckojęzycznej Szwajcarii, polegający na literackim ukazaniu motywu rozmycia tożsamości kulturowo-narodowej pokolenia migrantów, bądź też urodzonych już w Szwajcarii ich dzieci. Na przykładzie utworu Franco Supino omówiono literacką interpretację motywu tożsamościotwórczych wspomnień, a także przynależności kulturowej, które wyrażane są w odmienny sposób przez migrantów pierwszego i drugiego pokolenia. W artykule analizowane jest drugie pokolenie migrantów, określanych często jako ‘Secondos’, którzy budują swoją tożsamość między włoską kulturą tradycyjnie pielęgnowaną przez ich rodziców a nowoczesną kulturą Szwajcarii lat 1980-tych.
In the period from the beginning of the 1990s, a significant number of young writers with a migration background became apparent who began to write either in German or in French in multicultural Switzerland. Among them, a special position was occupied by Franco Supino (born 1965), who, with the novel "Musica Leggera" (1995), confirmed a new trend in the German-language Swiss literature, consisting in the literary presentation of the motif of the blurred cultural and national identity among the migrant generation or their children who were already born in Switzerland. Based on the example of the mentioned novel by Franco Supino, the literary interpretation of the motif of identity-forming memories is discussed, as well as cultural belonging, which are expressed differently by the first and the second migrant generation. The paper analyzes the second generation of migrants, often referred to as ‘Secondos’, who develop their identity between the Italian culture traditionally nurtured by their parents and the modern Swiss culture of the 1980s.

Opis:
Petra Reski (born in 1958) is a German writer from the post-war generation. Its representatives confront with dramatic consequences of the Second World War like the loss of homeland, the experience of escape and forced displacement. The article focuses on the Reski’s novel Ein Land so weit in the context of space. The narrator describes a sentimental journey to the home village in Warmia and family past. She documents impressions that combine different time dimensions, generations and memories.
Petra Reski (urodzona w 1958 roku) jest niemiecką pisarką pokolenia powojennego, które konfrontuje się z dramatycznymi konsekwencjami II wojny światowej takimi jak utrata ojczyzny, doświadczenie ucieczki i wypędzenia. Problematyka artykułu skupia się na powieści pt. Daleki kraj w kontekście kategorii przestrzeni. Narratorka opisuje sentymentalną podróż do rodzinnej wsi na Warmii i przeszłości przodków. Dokumentuje przeżycia powstałe na styku różnych wymiarów czasowych, pokoleń i ich wspomnień.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza procesu literackiej (re)konstrukcji naznaczonego traumą dziecięcego świata w autobiograficznej prozie Görana Rosenberga, Krótki przystanek w drodze z Auschwitz. Rzeczony tekst pod wieloma względami autor traktuje jako prozę reprezentatywną dla tzw. drugiego pokolenia po Zagładzie: bezpośrednich potomków Ocalałych, funkcjonujących w przestrzeniach tabuizowanych wspomnień i cierpiących na prawach pamięci odziedziczonej. W omawianym utworze autora interesują sposoby, w jakie pamięć traumatyczna symptomatycznie inkrustuje pamięć narracyjną, co w efekcie może prowadzić do (nad)produkcji znaczeń w ramach pozornie normatywnego procesu ewokowania wspomnień. Porusza ponadto problem statusu ontologicznego autora/narratora w aspekcie jego tożsamościowej dysocjacji w płaszczyźnie reminiscencji z okresu dzieciństwa. Propozycja interpretacyjna uwzględnia podjęcie próby jaskrawszej medykalizacji dyskursu literaturoznawczego, tj. potraktowanie prozy (post)pamięciowej jako swoistej medycznej epikryzy: wyodrębnienie treści świadczących o zespole określonych objawów, rozpoznaniu choroby oraz przebiegu terapii.
This article considers literary features that are characteristic of the (post)memorial prose written by members of the so-called “second generation” after Shoah: in other words, children of Holocaust Survivors, who grew up within spaces delineated by family memories that were strongly tabooed. Based on the example of the autobiographical text A Brief Stop On the Road From Auschwitz, by Göran Rosenberg, the article discusses how narration representing traumatic memories disturbs narration tied to narrative (normative) memories. Drawing on terms from trauma and memory studies, the article proposes that such novels be read as medical epicrises, each containing a range of symptoms, diagnoses, and specific therapeutic processes. This article specifically examines the so-called identity dissociation of the author/narrator, following the condition’s development over the course of the text. Simultaneously, and aided by references to urban studies terminology, the article hypothesizes a process of the reconstruction of a childhood world from a grown-up perspective.

Twórczość Michaela Crummeya, jednego z czołowych współczesnych pisarzy kanadyjskich, jest silnie osadzona w krajobrazie jego rodzinnych stron – Nowej Fundlandii. Wszystkie cztery jego powieści usytuowane są na wspomnianej wyspie i wspólnie kreślą szeroką panoramę historyczną tego regionu od czasów kolonialnych do współczesności. W swojej debiutanckiej książce z 2001 roku, zatytułowanej Rzeka złodziei, Crummey traktuje przestrzeń przede wszystkim jako nieantropologiczną determinantę ludzkich losów i procesów historycznych oraz świadka zagłady plemienia Czerwonych Indian. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie przestrzeni jako jednej z naczelnych kategorii powieści, a co za tym idzie, jej wpływu na recepcję dzieła przez czytelnika.
The fiction of Michael Crummey, one of the renowned contemporary Canadian writers, is deeply rooted in the landscape of his home-island, that is, Newfoundland. In his debut novel River Thieves published in 2001, the author shows the land as a non-anthropological determinant of human history and the only witness to keep a vivid, undistorted memory of the vanished tribe of Beothuks. This article invites the reading of Crummey's works through the prism of geopoetics and cultural geography. It shows what functions the space/land plays in the discussed narrative and how it adds new meanings to an old story, that is the extinction of Red Indians. Endowed with agency, nature is as important an agent in history-making as the settlers and first inhabitants; moreover, at present day it acts a live repository of memory. The article also investigates the differences between the English and Polish editions of the novel, focusing on the maps that precede the narrative.
