Opis:
Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) has garnered much attention, for its simple operation and high selectivity for the target solute. For an ELM process to be successful, emulsion stability and formulation of liquid membrane are the two main criteria. This study investigated an ELM formulation to identify a suitable green surfactant over the ordinary ones to reduce the utilization of chemicals. The stability of water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) was assessed in the following ways, by altering the concentrations of the egg yolk and NaOH, homogenizer speed, and emulsification time. To ascertain the favorable conditions for phenol extraction, several experiments were performed, adopting the batch process, which included many parameters, like the influence exerted by the pH of the external feed, concentration of surfactant, concentration of the internal phase, time of emulsification, homogenization speed and mixing time. Lower breakage and greater extraction efficiency (0.83% and 82.06%, respectively) were attained at 3.5 pH of the external feed, 4% (v/v) of the surfactant, 0.1 M of NaOH, 7 min of emulsification time, 5800 rpm of homogenizer speed and 3 minutes of mixing time. From the results of this study, egg yolk emerged as a good green surfactant. Thus, the ELM process holds promise as an effective technology for stripping phenol from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
An active biomonitoring study was carried out on the Algerian west coast using wild reference mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) sampled from the Kristel (K) site and transplanted in net cages during one month (between May and June 2007) to Oran Harbour (OH) and Mostaganem Harbour (MH), areas characterised by high levels of urban and industrial pollution. The biological response of the mussels was evaluated by their condition index and the use of a general stress biomarker (evaluation of lysosomal membrane stability: the neutral red retention time (NRRT) method), a genotoxic effects biomarker (determination of micronuclei (MN) frequency) and a neurotoxic effects biomarker (determination of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) concentration). Compared to the K reference specimens, OH and MH caged mussels presented a significant decrease of NRRT in lysosomal haemocytes (56.45±26.48 min and 67.25±22.77 min, respectively) (78±16.97 min for K mussels), an MN frequency respectively 7.3 and 9 times higher in the haemocytes and the gill cells of the OH caged mussels, and 7.2 and 6.4 times higher in the two tissues of the MH caged mussels. Significant inhibition of AChE activity was noted in the gills (16.93±3.1 nmol min−1 mg prot−1) and the digestive gland (7.69±1.79 nmol min−1 mg prot−1) of the OH mussels, but only in the gills (23.21±5.94 nmol min−1 mg prot−1) of the MH mussels, compared to the organs of the K control specimens (35.9±6.4 nmol min−1 mg prot−1 in the gills and 11.17±0.49 nmol min−1 mg prot−1 in the digestive gland). This study reflects the interest in such in situ biomonitoring assays and the utility of these biomarkers for assessing the effects of pollution in the Algerian coastal marine environment.

Opis:
The current paper focuses on assessing key parameters affecting the extraction of Chlorpyrifos as well as emulsion stability using the emulsion liquid membrane technology. Five parameters affecting the extraction have been studied: homogenizer speed, emulsification time, agitating time, surfactant concentration, and stripping phase concentration taking into consideration the emulsion breaking. Experiments proved that using the resulting optimum values will maximize both extraction and stripping efficiencies (93.8% and 94.7% respectively), while minimizing the emulsion breakage (increasing the stability of emulsion) to 0.73% with no need to employ a carrier agent. A 10 min agitating time, 3% (v/v) Span 80 as a surfactant, 12700-rpm homogenizer speed, 0.25 M HCl as an internal phase concentration, and 5 min emulsification time are chosen to be the optimum parameters’ values. A study of extraction kinetics and estimation of mass transfer coefficient was also accomplished (3.89×10-9m/s). The conclusions of this work can be extended to the removal of other types of pesticides from water.

Drought is the main environmental factor hampering world agriculture production. In the face of warmingclimate and reduced fresh water resources it become obvious that search for any factors decreasing water useis strongly recommended. Turf grasses able to withstand drought period longer could be recommended for turfareas as parks, lawns, home gardens etc. and relatively lower amounts of water should ensure satisfactory turfquality. Therefore, twelve turf varieties from three major cool-season turf grass species: perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) were tested inglasshouse pot experiment and in the laboratory for determination of their relative ability to withstand greenlonger in the face of water deficit. The different response of the examined forms to drought was noted. Conditions that favor fast water depletionwere the most suitable for the expression of water deficit-related traits. Therefore, sandy mixture of 16%volumetric moisture content at field water capacity was mostly suitable for observation of the variation oftested forms. Turf condition of Kentucky bluegrass, as contrary to red fescue, was strongly connected with thesoil moisture. Different manifestation of drought resistance was observed in tested species. Kentucky bluegrass,as rather no resistant to drought, exposed low level of drought avoidance. Red fescue was able to survivedrought mainly due to leaf blades resistant to desiccation. In perennial ryegrass some other mechanismsevolved to survive drought. Early leaf wilting and senescence contributes to nutrient remobilization duringdrought and avoids large water loses during the transpiration. Therefore, perennial ryegrass turf was able toregenerate better after drought, as compared to the other tested grass species.Search for new turf forms should focus on searching for ability to maintain acceptable conditions longer ina presence of increasing water deficit. It will then reduce the duration of period of poor turf conditions andfurther, turf water demands.

Opis:
Postharvest senescence is a critical problem of carnation cut flowers, limiting their transportation and subsequent marketing chain. This study was designed to assess whether the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1 MCP), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and nitric oxide (NO) released from donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) could prolong the vase life of cut carnations through an influence on the physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved in aging process. 1-MCP was used in the concentrations of 0, 100, 200, and 300 mg·m-3; AgNPs in the concentrations of 0, 50, 100, and 150 mg·dm-3; and SNP in the concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mM. All treatments significantly extended the cut flower life compared with untreated flowers, more so with 300 mg·m-3 of 1-MCP, 100 mg·dm-3 of AgNPs, or 0.3 mM of SNP. All these chemical compounds were able to considerably improve the relative water content (RWC), reduce the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and increase the membrane stability index (MSI) in petals and, therefore, maintain the membrane integrity. In addition, they decreased the activities of acetyl-CoA synthetase (ACS) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and, hence, depressed the production of ethylene in carnation cut flowers through downregulating the ethylene production, what prolonged the vase life. Altogether, the application of exogenous 1-MCP, AgNPs, or SNP may provide a promising avenue to improve the postharvest performance of carnation cut flowers.

The Algerian west coast is the prime recipient ofsev eral forms of pollution; hence, the necessity for an impact assessment of this coastal pollution using a suite ofr ecommended marine biomarkers, including lysosomal membrane stability in living cells by the Neutral Red Retention Time (NRRT) method, the evaluation ofmicron ucleus (MN) frequency, and the determination ofacet ylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, sampled from the large, polluted Oran Harbour (OH) and the Maˆarouf( Mrf) marine mussel farm between July 2005 and April 2006. The difference in the variations oft he annual physical parameters between OH and Mrfco rresponds to the influence ofthe domestic and industrial sewage discharged by the city ofO ran. The biological data ofthe mussels (condition index, protein content) recorded at both sites were related to their natural reproductive cycle. This indicated that intrinsic variation between the sites due to different mussel development phases was minimal. The variation in the AChE activity of some organs ofO H and Mrfm ussels, with minimal inhibition in July and a higher NRRT recorded in the granular haemocytes in the Mrfthan in the OH mussels during the autumn and spring, depends on the quality ofthe biotope and on generic stress factors. Moreover, the variation in MN frequency, in general reflecting a non-significant seasonal and spatial genotoxic effect ofthe contamination at the two sampling sites, requires further investigations regarding biotic and abiotic variations.

Opis:
Previously, we showed that anaerobic induction of respiratory nitrate reductase (NR) activity in Bradyrhizobium sp. (Lupinus) USDA 3045 is strongly enhanced by nitrate or nitrite through de novo synthesis. Here, multiple NR-active soluble forms, ranging from 75 kDa to 190 kDa, were observed under anaerobic conditions. Electrophoretic activity band patterns differed depending on the level and the type of the N oxyanion added. The intensity of the membrane-bound NR activity band of 230 kDa changed with time along with consumption of 2 mM nitrate. It was associated with a parallel 5-fold increase and then 2-fold reduction in the amount of membrane-bound NR protein. In contrast, on 4 mM nitrate, the level of NR protein was much more stable, apparently due to slower nitrate depletion. Moreover, in cells anaerobically grown without nitrate addition, a 42-kDa derivative of NR degradation was immunodetected, which was not observed if nitrate was present in the medium. These findings suggest that the amount of the respiratory NR protein could be negatively regulated by endogenous proteases in relation to the level of nitrate available. It seems, therefore, that multiple native forms might be not different isoenzymes but immature complexes or derivatives of the enzyme protein turnover. This report adds to a modest list of bacterial enzymes apparently regulated by proteolysis, such as GS, MurAA, EnvA, GdhA, and MetA.

Opis:
Potted chrysanthemum is one of the most important floriculture plants which commercially produced in greenhouses where silicon (Si) is available in limited concentration because of using several substrates as growing media. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the supplemental effects of Si nutrition on growth, flowering, flower longevity as well as shelf life and nutrients content of potted chrysanthemum in relation to Si application. Moreover, the effects of Si treatment on some physiological parameters i.e. chlorophyll content, stomatal resistance, membrane stability index (MSI) and total carbohydrates were also investigated. Si application as K₂SiO₃ was added whether as foliar application at 25, 75 and 125 mg L⁻¹ Si or soil drenches at 50, 100 and 150 mg L⁻¹ Si. Except plant height and leaf area, the other vegetative growth and flowering characters were improved as a result of both Si supplementation methods compared with untreated control. Flowering was earlier and shelf life was longer in Si-supplemented than nonsupplemented plants. Generally, Si application increased the macro and micronutrients concentrations (except Ca) estimated in this study. Chlorophyll content, stomatal resistance, MSI and total carbohydrates were increased among Si treated plants. Improving the floricultural traits, extending longevity and shelf life of greenhouse grown chrysanthemum may give an impact of its greenhouse commercial production if appropriate level was used.
Z wyjątkiem wysokości roślin i obszaru liścia, w porównaniu z kontrolą bez żadnych zabiegów, wszystkie cechy wzrostu i kwitnienia polepszyły się w wyniku zastosowania obu metod suplementacji. Kwitnienie było wcześniejsze, a żywotność dłuższa u roślin z suplementacją Si niż u roślinach bez suplementacji. Generalnie zastosowanie Si zwiększało stężenie makro- i mikroskładników (z wyjątkiem Ca) ocenianych w niniejszym badaniu.

A sub-sample of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv.ILC482) seeds was kept  as control and two other sub- samples were aged at 40 °C for 3 and 5 days. Consequently, three seed lots with different levels of vigor were provided. These seed lots were soaked in distilled water at 15°C for 12 and 18 hours and then dried back to initial moisture content at a room temperature of 20-22°C. Then seeds were sown in the field as split plot factorial based on RCB design. Hydro-priming improved leaf chlorophyll content index of plants from different  seed  lots.  Hydro-priming also  enhanced  stomatal  conductance of plants  from all  seed  lots under all  irrigation  levels,  but this  advantage for plants  from low vigor seed  lots  particularly under limited  irrigations  was higher  than that  for other  treatments. Plants  from high vigor seed  lot under different irrigation treatments had higher relative water content, compared with those from low vigor seed lots. Hydro-priming improved relative water content, membrane stability and grain yield of chickpea plants from different  seed lots  under various  irrigation treatments. It was concluded that hydro-priming to some extent can repair aged seeds and improve their performance under different irrigation treatments.
