Opis:
Background. During the recent years, appropriate attention has been paid to the oxidative stress which damages the body’s cells, proteins, and DNA. Therefore, the need of antioxidants becomes a therapeutic and preventive priority. In addition, microbial infections also constitute a public health problem. Objective. To find efficient, reliable and safe alternatives sources to synthetic antioxidants, antibiotics and antifungals drugs. Materials and methods. Extract and essential oil of Psidium guajava were screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against gram positive bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus), gram negative bacteria (Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas sp) and fungi (Candida albicans,Candida tropicalis and Cryptococcus neoformans), as well as to determine the functional groups of phytochemicals present in the essential oil by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results. The results indicate that P. guajava leaves extract demonstrated very high antioxidant activity and P.guajava essential oil showed the highest polyphenols content. The antioxidant capacity showed a significant negative linear correlation to total polyphenolic content (TPC) with Pearson’s correlation coefficients. P. guajava essential oil shows high antibacterial and antifungal activity against all the studied bacteria and fungi. The FTIR analysis of P. guajava essential oil showed the presence of several functional groups (ethers, esters, ketones, terpenes, alkanes, aldehydes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and phenols). The relationship between the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of P.guajava essential oil suggests that the attribution of its antimicrobial activity to a particular compound or a synergistic effects between its different constituents remains difficult. Conclusions. The present study demonstrated that Psidium guajava is a valuable source of active compounds with anti- oxidant and antimicrobial activities. This finding suggests the new use of the fruits and the leaves extracts of this plant in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections, as well as for the extraction of new antioxidants. Therefore, it is necessary to be carried out in another study to identify the active(s) compound(s) in P.guajava essential oil with respect to their mechanisms and synergistic actions.

The medicinal plants of Jordan are under threat due to several factors of habitat perturbation. Some of these factors include ruinous over-harvesting, climate change, competition and invasion. In this study, the authors employed a reliable method for micropropagation and assessment of antimicrobial activity of some important medicinal plants of Jordan. Seeds were surface sterilized and germinated on agar water media, and then shoots were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with the addition of 3% sucrose. In order to generate enough plant material, microshoots were transferred after fourteen days onto hormone free MS medium. Among all studied plants, it was found that the Achellia millefolium and Moring perigrina plants successfully multiplied in vitro containing different 6-benzyl amino purine (BA). For potential antimicrobial activity, the ex vitro (field leaf plants) and in vitro (plantlet) extracts were evaluated against some bacteria strains using ethanolic extracts. Both ex vitro and in vitro plants extracts showed the antimicrobial activity against the microorganism tested. The results from the study suggest that these two plants showed good antimicrobial activity against the different tested bacteria.

Introduction: Fungal disseases are the most common opportunistic infection. Objective: The main aims of the study were to determine phenolic content and to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-candida activity of the selected Indian-origin plant extracts from the fruit pulp, stem, leaves, and seeds of three plants of Indian origin. Material and methods: The extracts from Terminalia chebula, Thuja occidentalic and Syzygium jambolanum were investigated. The total phenolic content, antioxidant potential of different crude extracts was accessed using the free radical, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS). Anti-candida activity was evaluated using disk diffusion method and broth dilution assay against Candida albicans. Results: Ethanol and methanol extracts of Indian traditional plants possessed high radical scavenging activity: T. chebula 29.38±0.15, T. occidentalis 6.26±0.24 and S. jambolanum 25.64±0.18 at 0.32 mg/ml. The extracts exhibited good zones of inhibition diameters ranged between: for T. chebula 6.33±0.57 mm and 19.66±1.52 mm in diameter, S. jambolanum 7.00±00 mm and 23.33±1.52 and T. occidentalis 7.66±0.57 and 17.00±1.00 mm. C. albicans were susceptible to all three tested extract at different concentrations. The lowest MIC 1.95 mg/ml was recorded with S. jambolanum while the T. chebula and T. occidentalis inhibited the growth at 3.90 mg/ml, respectively, against the C. albicans. Conclusion: The study result paves an overall view on the bioactivities of three traditional Indian medicinal plants crude extracts.

Genetic research allows not only for precise diagnosing of diseases, but also for selecting therapy and appropriate medicines, and for insight into future health condition. Genetic information obtained as a result of genetic research is related not only to patients, but to their relatives, too. In this context a threat arises of abuse, infringement of human rights and unauthorised access to genetic data. The audit of NIK was aimed, in the first place, to examine whether genetic research in Poland is conducted with due care for safety requirements, that is whether Polish legal regulations keep up with the development of modern technologies in medicine.

Lemon verbena is cultivated mainly due to the lemon-like aroma emitted from its leaves that are utilized for most purposes. The chemical composition of the essential oil of lemon verbena was analyzed by GC/MS in July at pre flowering, in September at full flowering and in end of October at post flowering period. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil, extracted from Lippia citriodora was tested against laboratory control strains belonging to the American Type Culture Collection (Maryland, USA) four Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria using the disc diffusion test. Antioxidant activity of the sample was determined by 1,1-diphenil-2- -picrly-hydrazil (DPPH) assay. Well-known antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol were used as standard. Results showed, among different harvest periods high fresh and dry herbage and dry leaf yields per plant were obtained from full flowering stage. Harvest periods were found to have a significant effect on the content of essential oil and the highest amounts of limonene, neral and geranial and measured as 31.15, 11.92 and 15.53%, respectively at full flowering stage. In all samples, the main constituents were limonene, neral and geranial constituting 46.03%–58.59% of the total essential oil yield depend on development stages. Lemon verbena essential oil was found to have antibacterial activity especially against Gram (+) microorganisms. In DPPH system, the moderate radical scavenging activity was exhibited. Therefore, L. citriodora has potential to be used as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in food processing.

Opis:
Ceratophyllum demersum L. is a medical plant of the family Ceratophyllaceae that has been traditionally used for the treatment of diseases such as ulcer, diarrhoea, wounds and fever since ancient times. This study presents antioxidant activities of water and methanol extracts of in vitro propagated C. demersum. Shoot tip explants of C. demersum for in vitro plant regeneration were cultured on liquid Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 0.25–1.25 mg/L 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.10 mg/L Thidiazuron (TDZ) combinations for eight weeks. Maximum number of plantlets per explant (110.67) was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 0.75 mg/L BAP + 0.10 mg/L TDZ. In order to determine antioxidant activities of C. demersum, antioxidant contents (β-carotene, flavonoid, lycopene and total phenols), metal chelating and reducing power capacities of methanol and water extracts obtained from C. demersum were investigated. It was detected that water extract was more effective in all activities. Total phenols (76.55 μg/mg) in water extract were measured as the highest antioxidant component. Based on the water extracts data, as IC50 value for chelating on ferrous ions was 9.24 mg/mL, EC50 value for reducing power activity was 8.23 mg/mL. It was also determined that the metal chelating and reducing power activities of the both extracts are increased depending on the concentration. Therefore, all these data suggest that both tested extracts of in vitro propagated C. demersum would exert beneficial effects by virtue of their antioxidant properties and may be utilized as a promising source of therapeutics.

The higher fungi are a rich source of chemical compounds with multi-directional therapeutic and pro-health effects. This review summarizes the results of the most important chemical and biological studies of the fruiting bodies and the mycelial cultures of Laetiporus sulphureus. Numerous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial, anticancer, cytotoxic, hypoglycemic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the extracts. Currently, only a few wood-decay fungi have practical use in medicine. Therefore it seems important to continue research on the effectiveness and safety of extracts and compounds of natural origin, including fungi, whose potential is not still used.

This article offers publication of seventeen miniature vessels discovered in Hellenistic strata of Athribis (modern Tell Atrib) during excavations carried out by Polish-Egyptian Mission in the 1980s/1990s. The vessels, made of clay, faience and bronze, are mostly imports from various areas within the Mediterranean, including Sicily and Lycia, and more rarely – local imitations of imported forms. Two vessels carry stamps with Greek inscriptions, indicating that they were containers for lykion, a medicine extracted from the plant of the same name, highly esteemed in antiquity. The vessels may be connected with a healing activity practised within the Hellenistic bath complex.
