Opis:
The article analyses photographic discourse in contemporary Russian dramatic texts as a specific way of perceiving and constructing the reality, as a means of communication, and as a metalanguage. The conceptualization of photographic images in the dramatic text enabled the scrutiny of specific artistic ploys and photographic techniques applied. The article reveals the nature of correlation between the visual perception of a photograph incorporated in the dramatic text, the characters’ utterances and the author’s remarks. The photographic image fosters the rejection or the “appropriation” (recognition in oneself) of the Other by the characters. It also allows for the implementation of the communicative mechanisms used to create the hyperreality of the photo universum. The performative potential of the photographic discourse of the dramatic text materializes itself in such a hyperreality.

Opis:
The interlingual and intercultural differences between the linguistic world images appear in the translation process of media texts. Media reality becomes an additional problem in this particular case, because during the translation process it is also transformed heavily. This is caused not only by the nature of equivalence-related problems, but also by the selection proces of the source material and by summarising the translated texts. As a result, parts of the original text are missing. The final, translated texts are aimed at another target audience, who reads them with a diverse attitude. They often present, following the process of selecting and structuring of information, a different (modified or deformed) textual media reality.

The article presents a fragment of diagnostic research of a mixed nature, establishing the media reality of preschool children. It seeks answers to the question about the media reality of preschoolers in the opinions of children, teachers and parents. The diagnostic survey method (questionnaire, interview, document analysis) and statistical methods (chi-square test of independence, ANOVA, Phi coefficient, Cramer's V) were used. The study examined 100 6-year-old children, 100 parents and 16 pre-school teachers. It was established that: 1) pre-school children: have unlimited access to the mobile applications; they use media tools in an uncontrolled way at home; in kindergarten, they learn the rational and correct use of new technologies while playing and learning; 2) parents and teachers assess children's media competency at an average level; parents see advantages and disadvantages in the media usage by children; 3) children can independently install games on a tablet or smartphone, often their parents install them themselves (usually these are games inappropriate for children’s age); 4) there are significant differences between the opinion of children and the observations of parents regarding the use of media tools; preschoolers claimed that they use tablets more often, and parents most often indicated that the children mainly watch TV; 5) calculations of differentiating factors showed significant statistical differences only in one case – between teachers' opinion on the children’s level of media competency and the teachers’ degree of professional advancement; the higher the degree of advancement, the lower the assessment of the competency level represented by six-year-olds.

This paper deals with the representation of ethnic minorities in the media, focusing mainly on the role of the journalist. It approaches news stories through the prism of the media construction of reality and the cultural concept of representation. Using critical discourse analysis, the study describes the nature of the social reality constructed by the TV news series “Where Others Fear to Tread.” The paper reflects the general attributes of the representation of the Roma minority in the news, pointing out methods and signs used for emphasizing the stereotypes shared by the majority. The analysis shows that the media discourse of news stories could potentially confirm prejudices towards the Roma minority, forming the image of Roma people as essentially maladjusted, dangerous and suspicious individuals.

Relation between executive functions and theory of mind in the light of microgenetic approachResearch of numerous international and Polish development psychologists (Carlson and Moses, 2001; Hughes, 1998; Perner and Lang, 2002; Perner, 1998; Skórska, 2004; Putko, 2004; 2008; Kielar-Turska, Białecka-Pikul and Skórska, 2006; Bazak, 2009) point to a relation between executive functions (EF) and a theory of mind (ToM). Character of this relation is subject to research and scientific disputes (Putko, 2008), but the relation remains hypothetical. Presented research concerns the relation between EF and ToM in children aged 3 to 4 i.e. the period during which both functions develop. Microgenetic approach was used to verify the hypothesis. Children with high and low level of EF were selected from 98 children aged between 3;9 and 4;3. In 10 meetings, participants were solving several types of tasks measuring ToM. Subsequently, the measurement of EF was re-performed. Results of the research confi rm the relation between EF and ToM. Besides, microgenetic approach has made it possible to observe that children aged between 3 and 4 characterised by different levels of EF development differ in acquiring abilities of mental states understanding in other people.

Opis:
The presented study dwells on the issue of game theory by Roger Caillois to be applied to the contemporary dimension of digital games. The actual attempt is to find out the extent to which the game principle categories apply to media products, i.e. digital games. The paradigms by authors engaged in cultural anthropology, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, besides others, served as key theoretical groundwork for the present paper. Nevertheless, the theories concluded within media study addressing the game and game principles in contemporary society have not been excluded either. In essence, the theoretical reflection introduces the basic terminology axis creating an apt platform for the game variants in use, to perform within the forms of new reality, i. e. virtual reality. The primary aim is to define elementary concepts like “game”, “game principles”, “media or virtual space”, “digital game”, and “game genres”. Secondary is then to explicate certain game principles designated by Roger Caillois present in the particular game. Material to be applied for this study ranks among the genre of action games. “Action game” particularly is a digital genre that belongs to frequent genre types as well as RPG games, strategy and others. Drawing from this fact, one of the actual digital games called Mafia III was chosen for empirical study. The main purpose of the paper is through logical analysis to illustrate the issue of games, and subsequently point out the cases of their occurrence in the media space. Theoretical postulates by Roger Caillois are by author assumed to be potentially applicable to the current media reality of digital games that come under action genres.

This article is a look at contemporary theatre in the context of its changes caused by the development of technology and digital civilization. It aims to show the phenomenon of theatre transmediality, that is the use of new media in the implementation of theatre performances, and to define the basic functions of contemporary theatre in the social reception of art. Currently, there are many theatre directors and creators who use innovative media tools while working on a show or a specific artistic event. There are significant differences between the theatre influenced by new media and the one which developed in a traditional way.

Następnie wskazuje trzy główne źródła zmian w sposobie postrzegania polityki: spadek aktywności obywatelskiej i zainteresowania polityką, ewolucję mediów oraz zmianę sposobu działania polityków. W dalszej części scharakteryzowano istotę reality show i wskazano analogię pomiędzy nim a polityką.
The paper presents the causes which make the politics become similar to a reality show. The author demonstrates that social engagement is one of the most important issues in democracy. Then he points to three main sources of changes in the perception of politics: decline in civic participation and interest in politics, the evolution of the media and change of the behavior of politicians. In the following part the reality show has been presented and the analogy between it and the politics has been shown.

In the era of information revolution we are communicating via the web. Reflections, thoughts and information are transmitted by building up the language of augmented reality. In communication networks, while leading a chat, we are also influenced by advertisements. It is a kind of multiple contact with the network of friends, strangers, journalists and advertising agents. Symbols and patterns transmitted by tradition are given their virtual dimension, their universal archetypes adjust their character to the present. The Modern Man, a network user, tries to use the new tool – the computer – more efficiently. The Internet network is often compared to the extension of the human neural system. The computer as a medium of art was used to create an additional space - the virtual reality. It showed how interesting spaces can be created by combining art and technology. The combination of the human specificity of contact, language, and new technology creates tremendous opportunities and threats. Transhumanism is a possibility in which we would seek a symbiosis between the man and technology, so as not to create a conflict between the biological body and its electronic contact networks. The semantics of the city, despite of its changing nature, may have human-specific qualities, but its media expression may allow for incomparably richer network of contacts.

In 1985, Neil Postman published Amusing Ourselves to Death, a McLuhan-inspired critique of the transformation of public discourse from 19th-century print culture, with its depth of reading, thought and debate, to the contemporary era of television ‘show business’. Developments since then, most notably the digital revolution, allow us to update Postman’s thesis, to explore the digital age that succeeds the electric broadcast era and its contemporary transformation of culture and politics. This paper argues that digital personalisation has exploded the mass-media world, bursting its mainstream bubble into a foam of individual life-worlds, empowering everyone as the producer of their own realities. Arguing that the key thinker of this era is Philip K. Dick (with his exploration of fictive, split, and personal realities), the paper explores the cultural impact of this new post-truth era of ‘media’ realities and the ‘bemusement’ it produces.

This article discusses autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR, a sensation of ‘pleasant tingling’ or ‘brain tingles’ experienced by people watching videos prepared especially for this purpose and posted primarily on YouTube. With the interest in this phenomenon constantly on the rise, ASMR is nowadays becoming something more than merely a marginal community of online enthusiasts. On the one hand, ASMR is a bottom-up phenomenon. As a social media product it has spread through YouTube, which makes it more difficult to analyse and collect all ASMR videos available online. Therefore, this text focuses on the works of one specific ASMR artist. Known as Ephemeral Rift, he has been among the first ASMR content creators in the Internet. On the other hand, ASMR is a novelty and thus still an interesting issue for scientists who work at the intersection of sciences, such as biology, neurocognitive science, psychology, media studies and cultural studies. What is ASMR? What research is currently available regarding this phenomenon that until recently has been difficult to define? Will ASMR enter the realm of transmedia genres and forms of expression for good? The author tries to answer these questions, bearing in mind that this is still a fresh concept where the ‘old’ meets the ‘brand new’ in the media and therefore requires further research.

The objective of this study is to examine and better understand the impact of new technologies on multimedia journalism, mainly from the viewpoint of augmented reality (AR). Then, in the context of literature review, and in view of recent real-world examples of AR experience introduced by Harvard Business Review, the author will explore and critically evaluate the idea of using AR as a tool to help attract customers to newspapers and other print media. Apart from compelling content, newspapers can start offering a thrilling and enjoyable experience thanks to the implementation of innovative technologies. Thus, they can enhance multimedia journalism and take it to a whole new level. The study is complemented by an empirical probe focused on the current preferred ways of reading newspapers by readers in both the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. The survey also reveals the level of the survey respondents’ awareness and imagination of ‘live images’ as an engaging part of media content. Simultaneously, specific examples of AR used in different industries are delineated and associated questions and directions for further research are suggested.

Opis:
Keeping up with the Kardashians depicts the lives of the Kardashian clan through reality television. The unparalleled success of five sisters managed by their mother has only continued to increase over time along with their participatory self-surveillance through their formidable use of social media. In recent years, a focus on health and wellbeing has led the sisters to endorse products for weight loss and health, using their bodies as spaces of commodification and advertisement online. The family’s interaction with the camera, and the aesthetics of their social media cross-promotions combine to present an open “honest” front promoting the replication of their success and beauty for their audiences. The sisters engage with blackness in a way that bolsters their claims of capacitating and beautifying white feminine subjects, engagements now commonly termed “blackfishing.” This article analyzes how the Kardashians have created an intense regime of self-surveillance, even dabbling self-consciously in the carceral state's techniques for surveilling blackness, to construct themselves as both uncommonly, exotically sexual ('baring all') and respectable enough (white or white passing) to sell various remedies with dubious health value.
