Opis:
A first principles calculations study is carried out to theoretically investigate the effect of compressive and tensile strains on the structural, electronic and optical properties of type-I guest-free Si₄₆ and barium-filled Ba₈Si₄₆ clathrates. The electronic band structure of the unfilled Si₄₆ clathrate revealed a semiconducting behaviour with a quasi-direct band gap of 1.36 eV. Under hydrostatic pressure, the bandgap magnitude of the guest-free Si₄₆ behaves monotonously. For the Ba doped Si₄₆ clathrate (Ba₈Si₄₆) structure, the strain has no significant effect on the electronic band structure, while its impact on the optical properties is appreciable. The optical properties, such as the dielectric function and the absorption were computed for different strain variations, which are clearly enhanced for both the unfilled Si₄₆ and Ba-filled Ba₈Si₄₆ clathrates when the pressure is 1 GPa in the direction of a compressive state.

Opis:
Genistein, a major phytoestrogen of soy, is considered a potential drug for prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of genistein, estradiol and raloxifene on the skeletal system in vivo and in vitro. Genistein (5 mg/kg), estradiol (0.1 mg/kg) or raloxifene hydrochloride (5 mg/kg) were administered daily by a stomach tube to mature ovariectomized Wistar rats for 4 weeks. Bone mass, mineral and calcium content, macrometric parameters and mechanical properties were examined. Also the effects of genistein, estradiol and raloxifene (10-9-10-7 M) on the formation of osteoclasts from neonatal mouse bone marrow cells and the activity of osteoblasts isolated from neonatal mouse calvariae were compared. In vivo, estrogen deficiency resulted in the impairment of bone mineralization and bone mechanical properties. Raloxifene but not estradiol or genistein improved bone mineralization. Estradiol fully normalized the bone mechanical properties, whereas genistein augmented the deleterious effect of estrogen-deficiency on bone strength. In vitro, genistein, estradiol and raloxifene inhibited osteoclast formation from mouse bone marrow cells, decreasing the ratio of RANKL mRNA to osteoprotegerin mRNA expression in osteoblasts. Genistein, but not estradiol or raloxifene, decreased the ratio of alkaline phosphatase mRNA to ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1 mRNA expression in osteoblasts. This difference may explain the lack of genistein effect on bone mineralization observed in ovariectomized rats in the in vivo study. Concluding, our experiments demonstrated profound differences between the activities of genistein, estradiol and raloxifene towards the osseous tissue in experimental conditions.

An attempt has been made to synthesize the aluminium based ex-situ (Al-SiC) and in-situ (Al-TiB2) formed metal matrix composites with varying weight percentage of reinforcement contents such as 4wt.%, 6wt.% and 8wt.%. Synthesized composites were subjected to a cold extrusion process followed by heat treatment according to the ASTM B 918-01 standards. The mechanical properties of in-situ composites were evaluated as per the ASTM guidelines and compared with ex-situ formed composites and base metal properties. Superior properties were noticed in the in-situ formed composites and the mechanical properties such as yield strength, Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Hardness for both ex-situ and in-situ composites were found to increase with increasing the reinforcement addition. Cold extruded Al-8 wt.% SiC composite properties such as hardness, yield strength and UTS are 87 RB, 152 MPa, 216 MPa respectively. Whereas, for Al-8 wt.% TiB2 composite, the corresponding properties are 94 RB, 192 MPa, 293 MPa. The morphology of the composites is analysed by Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) whereas presence of reinforcement particles such SiC and TiB2 along with intermetallic phases Mg2Si and Al5FeSi are confirmed by EDX, XRD and Element Mapping analyses.

Opis:
Purpose: The subject of the research and investigation is a new ceramic foundry composite based on a spherical form of aluminium oxide. It is intended to limit the occurrence of technological problems related to the appropriate selection of auxiliary refractory materials, such as cracking, high heat capacity and variable coefficient of thermal expansion. Design/methodology/approach: A composite ceramic material with the spherical form of aluminium oxide included allows to reduce mass and stabilize characteristics of dimensional changes as a function of temperature in auxiliary panels in high-temperature firing processes with typical manufacturing process of the ceramics, which is gravity casting, drying and high-temperature firing. Findings: The study showed that the quantitative share of the spherical form of Al2O3 in the volume of ceramic material has a major impact on its properties. An increased share of spheres translates into greater material porosity and lower matrix density but also, by reducing the cross-section, into decreased strength properties. In the case of the developed ceramic material, there is no visible trend of a decrease in the coefficient of thermal expansion with increasing temperature, which is the case with traditional ceramic materials. Research limitations/implications: The strength of presented composite isn’t good and constitutes a further direction of research and development of the material. Practical implications: Although decreased strength properties, the composite with no visible trend of a decrease in the coefficient of thermal expansion with increasing temperature could be used as panels in high-temperature firing processes. Originality/value: New ceramic foundry composite based on a spherical form of aluminium oxide for auxiliary panels in high temperature processes.

Purpose: Mechanical properties, as the inherent characteristics of cells, play a critical role in many essential physiological processes, including cell differentiation, migration, and growth. The mechanical properties of cells are one of the criteria that help to determine whether the tissue contains lesions at the single cell level, and it is very important for the early prevention and accurate diagnosis of diseases. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) makes it possible to measure the mechanical properties at single cell level in physiological state. This paper presents a novel method to calculate the mechanical properties of cancer cells more accurately through Atomic force microscopy. Methods: A new induced equation of Hertz’s model, called differential Hertz’s model, has been proposed to calculate the mechanical properties of cancer cells. Moreover, the substrate effect has also been effectively reduced through comparing the calculated mechanical properties of cell at different cell surface areas. Results: The results indicate that the method utilized to calculate the mechanical properties of cells can effectively eliminate the errors in calculation, caused by the thermal drift of AFM system and the substrate effect, and thus improve the calculation accuracy. Conclusion: The mechanical properties calculated by our method in this study are closer to the actual value. Thus, this method shows potential for use in establishing a standard library of Young’s modulus.

Opis:
In the modern world, there is an increasing demand for implants, and technologies connected with their manufacturing. One of the possible paths of their development relates to the use of diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC) for the improvement of surface properties of the biomaterials used for implants. Further improvement of the mentioned properties can be induced by means of doping of the coating. Among the elements which are under current investigation of researchers, the following can be placed: Ag, Si, F, Cu, Ti, Ca and P. This paper reviews previously published experimental data concerning mechanical and physicochemical properties of DLC coatings doped with Ag, Si, Cu, Ti, Ca, F and P as candidates for biomedical applications. Although plenty of articles are published in the mentioned field, the differences of coatings’ synthesis techniques, various sources of dopants and substrates, as well as conducted experiments make no consistent view about a possible solution for their future implementation in medicine. Some of the selected dopants (Cu, Ca, P), still require better characterisation of mechanical properties. There is a necessity to conduct studies of mechanical and physicochemical properties of DLC coatings doped with these elements. This will enable adjustment of the necessary technological parameters to biomedical requirements.

Tungsten heavy alloys comprising tungsten, nickel and ferrous were modified, where molybdenum was added in varying weight proportions keeping the ratio of Ni: Fe (8:2) constant. The powders were mixed in a high-energy ball mill and were further fabricated using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method at a peak temperature of 1000°C with heating rate of 100°C/min. The details of the microstructure and mechanical properties of these various alloy compositions were studied. With the increasing weight composition of the Mo in the alloy, the relative density of the alloy increased with a significant improvement in all the mechanical properties. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and hardness improved significantly with increase in the proportion of Mo; however, a reduction in elongation percentage was observed. The maximum strength of 1250 MPa UTS was observed in the alloy with a Mo proportion of 24%. The heavy alloy unmixed with Mo has shown distinct white and grey regions, where white (W) grain is due to tungsten and grey region is a combinatorial effect of Ni and Fe. Upon addition of Mo, the white and gray phase differences started to minimize resulting in deep gray and black ‘C’-phase structures because of homogenization of the alloy. The main fracture mode found during this investigation in the alloys was inter-granular mode.

Opis:
A Kelvin-Voigt model consisting of a spring and a dashpot in parallel was applied for the viscoelastic characterization of solid rocket propellants. Suitable values of spring constants and damping coefficients were employed by a least squares fit of the errors to generate creep curves using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) for composite solid propellants. Three different composite propellant formulations based on HTPB/AP/Al having burning rates of 5 mm/s, 15 mm/s and 20 mm/s were tested under different stress levels varying from 0.1 MPa to 3 MPa and at different temperatures varying from 35 °C to 85 °C. Creep behavior with recovery was studied and analyzed to evaluate the viscoelastic properties. The change in spring constants, representing elastic deformation, was very small compared to the damping coefficients for the propellants studied. For a typical propellant formulation, when the stress level was increased, the spring and damping coefficient both increased significantly whereas for an increase in temperature, they remained nearly constant. However, the ratio E/η was observed to be constant and independent of stress level. It was also observed that the variation of E and η varied linearly with increase in stress whereas their ratio showed a logarithmic variation. A mathematical correlation was developed to evaluate the viscoelastic properties during creep of composite propellants.

Ingeo® PLA (polylactic acid) knitted fabric was scoured through an exhaust technique. The scouring was carried out with sodium carbonate in the presence of a detergent at various concentrations and temperatures. The scoured fabric was bleached with various oxidative bleaching agents. Bleaching was carried out with hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite. Hydrogen peroxide was applied by exhaust and cold pad batch (CPB) techniques. It was observed that during scouring PLA fabric was degraded at high alkali concentrations and processing temperatures. The scouring temperature above 60oC proved to be deleterious due to the scouring solution penetrating into the polymer structure and damaged the fiber. Sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite caused little damage to the mechanical properties of PLA. Hydrogen peroxide when applied by the CPB technique did not reduce strength appreciably but when applied by the exhaust technique decreased the strength significantly. SEM analysis revealed that hydrogen peroxide caused holes and slit formation in the fiber structure.

This study investigated the influence of print orientation on the mechanical properties of 17-4 PH stainless steel parts fabricated using material extrusion technology. Tensile test specimens were 3D printed in different orientations (flat, on-edge, and upright), and their mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed that the print orientation significantly affected the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at failure of the specimens. The flat and on-edge orientations exhibited similar mechanical properties, while the upright orientation resulted in lower strength and higher fracture susceptibility. Hardness measurements also indicated variations in hardness distribution among the orientations. The findings emphasize the importance of optimizing the print orientation parameter to achieve desired mechanical characteristics in 17-4 PH stainless steel parts.

Mechanical Seal use highly efficient alternative water having a great quantity of an aqueous solution and has an advantage no corrosion brine. Metal Carbide composites have been investigated as potential materials for high temperature structural applications and for application in the processing industry. The existing Mechanical seal material is a highly expensive carbide alloy, and it is difficult to take a price advantage. Therefore the study of replacing body area with inexpensive steel material excluding O-ring and contact area which demands high characteristics is needed. The development of WC-Ni base carbide alloy optimal bonding composition technique was accomplished in this study. To check out the influence of bonding temperature and time, bonding characteristics of sintering temperature was experimented. The bonding statuses of this test specimen were excellent. The hardness of specimen and bonding rate were measured using ultrasound equipment. In this work, Powder of WC (involved VC, Cr), Co and Mo2C mixed by attrition milling for 24hours. Nanostructured WC-27.6wt.%Ni-1.5wt.%Si-0.11wt.%VC-1.1wt.%B4C composite were fabricated at 1190°C by high temperature vacuum furnace. To check out the influence of bonding temperature and time, bonding characteristics of sintering temperature was experimented. Its relative density was about 99.7%. The mechanical properties (hardness and fracture toughness) were 87.2 HRA and 4.2 M·Pam1/2, respectively. The bonding status of this test specimen was excellent and the thickness of bonding layer was 20 ~30§ at 1050 and 1060°C bonding temperature.
