Opis:
The presented study examines the relationship between high school students’ mathematics anxiety and learning styles. Subjects were 441 eleventh grade students enrolled in six different high schools. The data were obtained primarily from two scales, namely “Mathematics Anxiety Scale” and “Learning Style Inventory”. Quantitative research approach was used in analyzing and collecting the data. Results revealed a significantly positive relation between mathematics anxiety and an avoidant learning style. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between anxiety and collaborative learning. Results also revealed that avoidant learning style was the strongest predictor of mathematics anxiety

Aim. This paper presents research aimed at testing the mathematical self-efficacy of mathematics and computer science student teachers. The aim of the presented phase of the research was to verify the effectiveness of the chosen research instrument after translation into Czech, its applicability within the specific environment of the preparation of future teachers and the design of a shorter version of the questionnaire. Methods. 97 students of the first and second year of Bachelor's degree studies at the Faculty of Education of Charles University, specialising in mathematics and computer science, were interviewed either in a single-subject form or in combination with a second subject. Subsequently, the data was processed and evaluated using quantitative methods. Results. The results confirmed that the test, even when translated into Czech, fully met the claim of high reliability (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.965). Using the Principal Axis Factoring method with Varimax with Kaiser Normalisation in 11 iterations, convergence to the four basic components, which were characterised as Motivation and Enjoyment, Anxiety, Self-confidence and Value, was achieved. Conclusion. The research has shown that the chosen research instrument, the ATMI questionnaire, is fully functional after translation into English and use in the environment of preparation of future mathematics and science teachers. The first measurement data also confirms that attitudes towards mathematics are very different among future mathematics and science teachers. It also confirmed the assumption that the questionnaire has the potential to identify students who have problematic attitudes towards mathematics and are therefore at risk of dropping out.

affect in mathematics education

underachievement syndrome
Opis:
In one of his latest articles, Fortus (2014), points out that “when one considers the centrality of affect to teaching and learning and the broad range of topics that are related to affect, it is concerning that it has received relatively so little attention” (Fortus 2014, p. 821). In order to support his position, he provides an overview of the research on affect in science education that has been published in several journals (JRST, SciEd, and IJSE) between 2001 and 2011. The author also hypothesizes why affect has been under-attended to by the science education research community so far. And the conclusion he arrives at is that affect remains in the shadow of researchers’ attention partly due to the existing “international trend towards standardization of schooling and high-stakes testing” (p. 822). The main purpose of this article is to emphasize that affect does play an important role also in learning mathematics and for this reason it should be considered as one of the core dimensions of mathematics education. The first part of this article provides examples of two phenomena: math anxiety and the underachievement syndrome in learning mathematics, where affective determinants are unquestionable. Subsequently, we shift the focus from these particular issues to the general description of what affect is, what meaningful concepts it contributes in the field of research on mathematics education, and how the research community can benefit from the approach it promotes. Finally, we present some new directions for researchers and teachers that may result in an increase of the quality and efficiency of both teaching and learning mathematics.

The aim of this paper is to describe the current state of selected mathematical achievements of Polish students and the most significant social aspects related to mathematical education and its role in the contemporary world. First, the importance of mathematical competences will be discussed with their role in the curriculum of young people entering the labour market. Then, a diagnosis of the state of mathematics teaching in Poland and the results of key educational research conducted in this field (mainly PIAAC, PISA, TIMSS, and the results of external exams in Poland) will be presented. Finally, the so-called non-cognitive aspects related to mathematical education, such as math anxiety or the role of stereotypes, will be discussed.

Opis:
Students solving mathematical problems on the blackboard are an everyday routine in Slovenian classrooms. On the other hand, it is commonly known that students often consider this situation as threatening. In order to highlight this phenomenon, Slovenian elementary pre-service teachers (N=242) filled out an Internet questionnaire about preferred teaching techniques. Only a third of the participants saw this teaching technique as an effective method for learning. In a pedagogical experiment, three teaching techniques were probed in a problem solving based mathematics course with combinatorial and probability topics. Empirical results showed no significant differences in knowledge according to experimental groups.

Opis:
Math anxiety (MA) has been seen in research as one of the most important factors that play a role in the math achievements. It can positively correlate with several psychological variables: personality traits, test anxiety, working memory. Based on a review of literature in the present study it was expected the correlation between MA (and its perception) and motivation for learning, as well as the diversity of motivation and perception of mathematics depending on the level of education. In study of primary school pupils from grade 4 (n = 43) and 6 (n = 45), FS Math Anxiety Survey, consisting of 54 items and Work Preference Inventory, including 30 items concerning the motivation, have been used.MA was significantly higher in students form grade 4 than 6. There were no significant differences in motivation between both groups. Compared with the grade 6 sample, in grade 4 there has been stronger positive correlation between intrinsic motivation than intentional one with the perception of mathematics. In both groups it has been observed stronger correlation between MA and its perception than between math perception and motivation. The correlation between motivation for learning and perception of mathematics in students may be important for the development of intervention, aiming to reduce the level of math anxiety.
(1994) a lękiem przed matematyką.

The article compares the learning environments in the years 2003 and 2012 in order to clarify the reasons for the significant increase in the mathematical skills level of Polish 15-year-olds in those years as pointed by PISA studies. We studied the effect of school and family factors as well as students’ non-cognitive achievements on mathematics scores in PISA. In addition, SEM was used in subgroups in order to check whether the role of investigated factors changed over time. The research model adopted allowed to explain a large part of variability of students’ mathematical achievements. Analyses carried out on a sample of 8,966 people revealed significant, positive changes in the students’ family environment: conditions at home improved and parents’ educational level increased. The impact of home factor on non-cognitive student achievement intensified. School principals pointed to the favourable changes in the school environment. In turn, students’ attituds towards school became less optimistic and their sense of belonging weakened. Also the non-cognitive performance of pupils deteriorated over time.
