    The author discusses the social and anthropological problem of material poverty from the ethical and pedagogical perspective. The article consists of three sections which respectively concentrate on the following topics: (a) poverty and globalization, (b) ways of helping the needy, and (c) poverty as a chance for personal development. The author concludes that poverty improperly approached by society can lead to a depersonalization of both the poor and those who live with them: the former are attached with tags or marginalized, and the latter miss the chance for personal development. In order to avoid depersonalization, then, poverty should be understood not only as a social problem, but also as a valuable lesson of humanity.

    Opis:
                 The essential measures for a common European asylum system adopted by the EU institutions include the Regulation (EU) No 604/2013 and the Directive 2013/32/EU. These acts relate to the various stages of the functioning of the common European asylum system, however, there may be a risk of a violation of the fundamental rights of applicants as set out in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, including the prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment (Article 4 of the Charter), at both stages. Such a risk may arise as a result of deficiencies in asylum systems of the Member States. If these deficiencies are to fall within the scope of Article 4 of the Charter, they must attain a particularly high level of severity, which depends on all the circumstances of the case. An example of attaining this particularly high level of severity is the situation of extreme material poverty. As acts of the EU asylum law do not contain the terms “particularly high level of severity” and “extreme material poverty” and all the more they do not define them, guidelines on how to interpret and apply Article 4 of the Charter in the context of the common European asylum system should be sought in the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU. Therefore, the aim of the article is to explore and attempt to generalise and develop the basis and the criteria indicated by the CJEU for assessing the actual nature of deficiencies in the asylum system of the Member State in question from the point of view of the prohibition laid down in Article 4 of the Charter, with particular emphasis on the criterion of a particularly high level of severity and the situation of extreme material poverty which meets this criterion.

Za nowy, wartościowy paradygmat w procesach służących organizowaniu wychowania i kształcenia młodego pokolenia uznaje się w związku z takimi potrzebami edukację nastawioną na włączanie wszystkich uczniów z uwzględnieniem ich indywidualnych potrzeb i możliwości; edukację, której głównym celem jest wychodzenie naprzeciw problemom nierówności i wykluczenia społecznego i tym samym wyrównywanie szans edukacyjnych dzieci i młodzieży.
    The constant changes and transformations that characterize modern times, on the one hand, generate many new opportunities and contribute to the improvement of the process of building the quality of life, and on the other hand, they are the source of numerous socio-economic inequalities, leading to the emergence of serious barriers to access to education. Such a situation creates a need to undertake actions aimed at equalizing educational opportunities of young people brought up in poor, neglected, socially and culturally marginalized environments. Education focused on the inclusion of all students is a new, valuable paradigm in the field of upbringing and educating the young generation that takes into account young people’s individual needs and possibilities. The main goal of this educational paradigm is to meet the problems of inequality and social exclusion, and thus equalize educational opportunities for children and youth.

    Opis:
    Widowhood of older women in Poland is an important research topic, especially for two reasons. First, widowed women constitute a relatively large subpopulation in the country. Second, the research conducted in other European countries showed that widowhood is related to a higher risk of poverty among women in older age groups. In the paper, I analyze the material situation of older widows in Poland and determine what factors are related to a higher risk of financial problems among them. In particular, I investigate a role of survivor’s pension for women’s material situation. I use data from the first wave of the Generations and Gender Survey, conducted in Poland (GGS-PL). The sample consists of widowed and married women aged 60–79, living in Poland. I apply the logistic regression analyses and use different measures of financial hardship. Regardless of which measure is used, the results showed that in comparison to marriage, widowhood is related to a higher risk of material deprivation among older women. Survivor’s pension does not mitigate this risk completely, but it is related to a significantly lower risk of a severe material deprivation.

    Opis:
    The issue of global poverty is one of utmost importance and has gained increasing attention from political and social philosophy. In philosoph ical literature, severe forms of poverty and inequality between rich and poor countries are central, while ‘relative’ poverty, which is com- mon in richer countries, has gained much less attention. In an attempt to fill this gap, I will explore the philosophical substance of poverty a nd social exclusion in the context of welfare states. I discuss David Miller’s theory of social justice and the concept of material deprivation as it is used by the European Union. My main assumption is that material deprivation is socially unjust because it violates the three principles of social justice: need, desert, and equality. This finding will be explored on a theoretical level as well as considering empirical insight. Against this background, I will conclude with remarks on the possible contribution of social and politi- cal philosophy to poverty research.
    Sprawiedliwość społeczna w państwie opiekuńczym. Normatywna wymowa niedostatku materialnego. Kwestia ubóstwa na świecie jest jednym z najważniejszych problemów i jako taka zyskuje coraz większą rangę w filozofii politycznej i społecznej. Przypadki skrajnego ubóstwa oraz nierówności między krajami bogatymi i biednymi zajmują znamienite miejsce w literaturze filozoficznej; znacznie mniej zaś uwagi poświęca się zagadnieniu „względnego” ubóstwa, które jest powszechne w krajach bogatszych. Chcąc wypełnić tę lukę, autor artykułu zajmuje się badaniem filozoficznej istoty ubóstwa i wykluczenia społecznego w państwach opiekuńczych. Autor omawia teorię sprawiedliwości społecznej Davida Millera oraz pojęcie „niedostatek materialny”, które używane jest przez Unię Europejską. Jako główne założenie przyjmuje, że niedostatek materialny jest społecznie niesprawiedliwy, ponieważ narusza trzy podstawowe elementy sprawiedliwości społecznej: potrzebę, zasługę i równość. Założenie to badane jest na poziomie teoretycznym, jak również w kontekście danych empirycznych. W podsumowaniu artykułu autor podkreśla rolę filozofii społecznej i politycznej w dalszych badaniach nad ubóstwem.
