Opis:
In the ovary epidermis of Ornithogalum umbellatum L. lipotubuloids were found, i.e. distinguished cytoplasmic domain with an agglomeration of half unit membrane-surrounded lipid bodies, entwined and held together by a system of microtubules (Protoplasma 75: 345-357; 77: 473-476). Using light and EM-autoradiography with 3H-palmitic acid (25 μCi/ml) it was found that lipotubuloids were the site of intense incorporation of this isotope. After extraction of lipids with lipid solvent the lipotubuloids were not labeled. Localization of autoradiographic grains after 15-h postincubation with isotope-free medium indicated a migration of the labeled substances from the lipotubuloids to the whole cells. Ultrastructural studies demonstrated that most autoradiographic grains after 2-h incubation were localized over the site of the microtubules adjoining closely the half unit membranes of lipid bodies. These observations suggest, that the surface of lipid bodies may be the active site in lipid synthesis and involvement of the microtubules in these processes is possible.

Opis:
"Elaioplasts" observed in Vanilla planifolia, Funkia Sieboldiana and Althaea rosea exhibit all the features characteristic of lipotubuloids earlier described in Ornithogalum umbellatum. They are cytoplasmic domains containing aggregates of lipid bodies connected with microtubules. The immunogold technique confirmed the presence of tubulin in this domain. These structures do not have their own membranes but they are surrounded by a tonoplast at the side of a vacuole since they invaginate into it. In cytoplasm of this domain among lipid bodies there are numerous ribosomes, ER cisternae and vesicles as well as few mitochondria, Golgi structures and microbodies while at older developmental stages there are also autolytic vacuoles. The fact that they are so similar to O. umbellatum lipotubuloids suggest that "elaioplasts" of V. planifolia, F. Sieboldiana and A. rosea can also be named lipotubuloids.

Opis:
Microscopic analysis of embryogenic tissues of Picea abies and P. omorika showed that the tissues differed in proportions of various types of proembryogenic masses, and in presence/absence of early somatic embryos, which suggests that they differed in embryogenic potential. On the basis of this study, embryogenic competence of tissues can be assessed at early stages of somatic embryogenesis, and thus the most efficient lines can be selected (one Picea abies and two P. omorika). In the course of development of somatic embryos embryogenic tissue was placed on a medium with abscisic acid (ABA), which affects an increase in osmotic pressure at the stage of maturation of somatic embryos and finally on the regeneration of cotyledonary embryos. In this stage of embryos development, storage materials were accumulated, which are used in specific metabolic processes during embryo development.

Opis:
Background. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and largely preventable through improving diet quality and other lifestyle factors. In recent years, dietary recommendations have shifted towards diets high in plant-based foods and low in animal-based foods for the prevention of chronic diseases. Objective. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between seeds consumption, lipid profile and body mass index (BMI) in a group of 889 (313 female and 576 male) randomly selected patients hospitalized in the Nitra Cardio Center, Slovakia. Material and Methods. The data necessary for the evaluation the relationship between seeds consumption, lipid profiles and BMI were obtained by a questionnaire method in closed-ended format. Data collection was carried out simultaneously with the anthropometric and biochemical examinations of the respondents ensured by the Nitra Cardio Center. The following parameters were assessed in the blood: total cholesterol (T-C), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and glucose (GLU). Comparisons between groups were made utilizing one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Results. Respondents indicated pumpkin seeds as the most commonly consumed seeds (45.19% of women and 53.06% of men) and their preference did not cause changes in lipid profile. Women who consume seeds 1-2 times/month had significantly lower levels of T-C and LDL-C compared to women non-consuming seeds (P < 0.05). In men, we did not observed any changes in lipid profile. The lowest BMI in women was associated with flaxseed preference and in men with sunflower preference. Increasing frequency of seeds consumption of women and men did not cause changes in BMI. Conclusions. Based on beneficial effects of seeds on cardiovascular risk factors, it seems that seeds consumption can be considered as a useful therapeutic approach for reducing lipid profile and body mass index.

The world’s population is aging. Aquatic exercises can improve the physical function in humans and raise the quality of their lives in middle and older age. The study aimed to determine the effect of aqua aerobics on the selected somatic, physiological and aerobic capacity parameters in postmenopausal women. 11 purposively selected women that were confirmed overweight or obese by 20% and had Body Mass Index of 30±5 (the first stage of obesity) took part in aqua aerobics classes three times a week for 14 weeks. Their mean age was 56.18±3.19 years and mean height was 166.5±7.41 cm. The value of LBM and muscle mass (p=0.04 in both cases) were statistically significantly higher at study end compared with their baseline values, likewise haemoglobin concentration (p=0.001), haematocrit (p=0.03) and blood cell count (p=0.01), whereas BMI (p=0.02) and percentage body fat (p=0.04) were significantly lower. The lactate analysis revealed significant changes in LAmax (p=0.04), LAres9' (p=0.02), DeltaLAmax-LAsp (p=0.02) and DeltaLAres9’-LAres3’ (p=0,0004). After 14 weeks of aqua aerobic workout, significant changes were noted in the selected somatic, morphological and aerobic capacity parameters in postmenopausal women, but the differences between the lipid profiles were insignificant.

ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to determine the effects of 2 physical exercise programs carried out during working hours in an office work environment on health-related parameters of employees.Material and MethodsThe participants included 47 healthy office worker volunteers (aged 45±11.95 years, 27% males) who formed 3 groups: circuit training (CT), brisk walk (BW), and control (C) groups. The interventions lasted 12 weeks with a weekly frequency of three 30-minute sessions in the middle of the workday. All employees were evaluated with a multicomponent battery test which included: anthropometric and body composition measurements, a cardiorespiratory fitness test, lipid profile, blood pressure, and mental health (depression, anxiety, and stress). Basic descriptive statistics were calculated. A repeated measures ANOVA was performed to summarize changes in the variables studied after the application of the physical exercise programs.ResultsGenerally, both exercise programs (CT and BW) maintained the body weight and body mass index while reducing body fat mass (a group × time interaction; 4.864 ≤ F ≤ 6.524, 0.001 ≤ p ≤ 0.015), although the CT intervention also showed relevant (inter-group) reductions in the waist-hip ratio (F = 11.311, p = 0.007) and increased skeletal muscle mass (F = 15.062, p = 0.003). Both exercise programs (CT and BW) improved the cardiorespiratory fitness test scores (a group × time interaction; F = 18.054, p < 0.001). There were no changes in the lipid profile or blood pressure after the interventions, but there was an improvement in mental health (4.760 ≤ F ≤ 8.087, 0.008 ≤ p ≤ 0.037).ConclusionsThe findings suggest that both types of programs could be implemented in the employees’ daily routine in order to improve their overall health. Nevertheless, studies with larger samples are necessary before the conclusions can be generalized.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of the underground microclimate salt mine on the body mass, fatty tissue content and lipid balance. The research was performed in the Lake Wessel Chamber, situated 135 meters under the ground, on the 3rd level of Wieliczka salt mine. The studied group comprised of 43 healthy adult people. Each day of the stay in the salt chamber the body weight and fatty tissue content were measured. Before the examination and after it, the peripheral blood samples from elbow veins of the subjects were taken for further study. The blood tests included: the total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins (HDL) and triglycerides. Statistical analysis revealed that 14-day, 6,5-hour long exposure to the underground atmosphere caused a statistically significant increase: of the body weight, fatty tissue content and of the HDL. Statistically insignificant decrease of the total cholesterol and triglycerides was also observed.

Celem pracy była ocena wpływu ćwiczeń mięśni brzucha realizowanych metodą gigant-serii na lokalne i ogólnoustrojowe zmiany zawartości tłuszczu. Badaniu poddano zawodników Muay Thai (boks tajski) i kulturystyki (n = 20). Wiek badanych wynosił od 18 do 33 lat, staż zawodniczy od 1 do 8 lat. Badania wykonano przed rozpoczęciem programu treningowego i po 30 dniach treningu. Do pomiaru całkowitej procentowej zawartości tkanki tłuszczowej w organizmie oraz lokalnej tkanki tłuszczowej zastosowano analizator składu ciała FUTREX-5500A/ZL. Pomiary grubości fałdów skórno-tłuszczowych wykonano za pomocą tkankomierza. W wyniku badań stwierdzono, że seria ćwiczeń mięśni brzucha przy wysokim poziomie otłuszczenia trzewnego, realizowanych metodą gigant serii nie obniży go, a jedynie spowoduje wzrost siły i wytrzymałości mięśni brzucha.
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of abdominal giant set workout on local and systemic changes of fat content. The study group consisted of 20 male athletes training Muay Thai and body building. The age of the subjects was 18-33 years, the training experience was 1-8 years. The measurements were taken before the beginning of the abdominal giant set workout and after 30 days. The FUTREX-5500A/ZL analyzer was used to measure the body fat and the local adipose tissue composition. The measurement of skinfolds thickness was done by means of skinfold calipers HARPENDEN C-136. As a result of examinations it was affirmed that abdominal giant set workout, by high level of visceral fat content, shall not decrease it, but only influent the increase of the strength and endurance od abdominal muscles.

Background. The formation and development of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) is largely caused by lifestyle factors. Many studies have shown that excessive consumption of simple carbohydrates, alcohol, salt, physical inactivity and smoking increase the risk of MetS. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional status and its relationship with selected lifestyle factors in elderly people with MetS. Material and methods. 81 people aged 51-75 participated in the study. According to the guidelines, all tests were performed on an empty stomach. The comparison of individual quantitative variables between the groups was performed using the Student's t-test for independent measurements or using the Mann-Whitney U test. The relationship between quantitative variables was verified with the Spearman's correlation coefficient. All statistical tests were based on a significance level of p<0.05. Results. The BMI, the percentage of body fat and the waist circumference significantly exceed the norm for the population in the examined persons. The responses of respondents aged 51-65 show that 36% of people sweetened their drinks, 65.6% were salted their food, 51.6% consumed alcohol, and at the age of 66-75, respectively: 47.1%, 52.9%, 41.2%. There was no correlation between sweetening beverages and salting food and the concentration of glucose and lipids. However, a positive correlation was found between the amount of salt consumed and the heart rate (r=0.28, p<0.05). In both age groups, statistically significant differences in the concentration of triglycerides depending on alcohol consumption or non-consumption were found. Due to the lack of precise data on the amount of alcohol consumed, the correlation between alcohol consumption and the concentration of glucose and lipids was not analyzed. Physical activity was not undertaken by 39.1% of patients aged 51-65 years and 41.2% of patients aged 66-75 years. In the group of elderly people without physical activity, a statistically significantly higher glucose concentration was found in relation to those who were physically active (130 mg/dl vs. 105 mg/dl; p=0.031). Patients aged 51-65 who engaged physical activity had statistically significantly lower body weight, BMI, waist circumference and lean body mass, which requires further studies. Conclusions. The anthropometric indices and parameters of MetS patients indicated disturbances in the nutritional status. Unhealthy lifestyle was shown mainly in the younger group of patients 51-65 years old (they sweetened drinks more often, salted dishes, consumed alcohol). Patients with metabolic syndrome did not undertake physical activity as often as recommended
