The authors consider the numerical solution of Ax=f, where A is a bounded invertible linear operator in a complex Banach space, (i) using only premultiplication of vectors by A and (ii) forming linear combinations of known vectors. Essentially, this involves the approximation of A^(−1) by polynomials in A. Several methods of computing this approximation are investigated.

We study the topological properties of the space \(\mathcal{L}(L^\varphi, X)\) of all continuous linear operators from an Orlicz space \(L^\varphi\) (an Orlicz function \(\varphi\) is not necessarily convex) to a Banach space \(X\). We provide the space \(\mathcal{L}(L^\varphi ,X)\) with the Banach space structure. Moreover, we examine the space \(\mathcal{L}_s (L^\varphi, X)\) of all singular operators from \(L^\varphi\) to \(X\).

Finite-dimensional approximations for linear compact operators are constructed by discretization of the underlying Banach space. Sufficient conditions for strong convergence of the finite-dimensional operators to the given compact operator and for their collective compactness are obtained. In particular, the finite-dimensional approximation of the pencil A−λJ:H→V is considered, where H,V are Banach spaces, A is an invertible and J a compact operator.

The paper is concerned with stability properties of bounded outer inverses for bounded operators on Banach spaces. We investigate the effect of perturbations of subspaces generating outer inverses for a given operator. We prove that the convergence of respective gaps between subspaces implies the convergence in the norm of outer inverses generated by these subspaces. The notion of outer inverses is illustrated by an example which gives the form of outer inverses for an arbitrary matrix.

Let $ A $ be a bounded linear operator in a complex separable Hilbert space, $ A^∗ $ be its adjoint one and $ A_I := (A − A^∗)//(2i) $. Assuming that $A_I $ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, we investigate perturbations of the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of $ A $. Our results are formulated in terms of the “extended” eigenvalue sets in the sense introduced by T. Kato. Besides, we refine the classical Weyl inequality $ \Sigma_{k=1}^\infty (Im \lambda_k (A))^2 ≤ N_2^2 (A_I) $, where $ λk(A) (k = 1, 2, . . .) $ are the eigenvalues of $ A $ and $ N_2(·) $ is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. In addition, we discuss applications of our results to the Jacobi operators.

Let A be a closed linear operator acting in a separable Hilbert space. Denote by co(A) the closed convex hull of the spectrum of A. An estimate for the norm of f(A) is obtained under the following conditions: f is a holomorphic function in a neighbourhood of co(A), and for some integer p the operator $A^p - (A*)^p$ is Hilbert-Schmidt. The estimate improves one by I. Gelfand and G. Shilov.

The paper deals with operators of the form A = S + B, where B is a compact operator in a Hilbert space H and S is an unbounded normal one in H, having a compact resolvent. We consider approximations of the eigenvectors of A, corresponding to simple eigenvalues by the eigenvectors of the operators An = S + Bn (n = 1, 2,...), where Bn is an n-dimensional operator. In addition, we obtain the error estimate of the approximation.

In this paper, using the concept of A-statistical convergence we prove a Korovkin type approximation theorem in multivariate modular function spaces. Furthermore, giving an example via bivariate operators of Kantorovich type, it is shown that our theorem is stronger than its classical case.

Praca ma charakter przeglądowy. Celem pracy jest wyjaśnienie, w jakim sensie można mówić o rozwiązywaniu zadania źle postawionego i pokazanie, że stosując odpowiednią metodę udaje się zadanie to rozsądnie rozwiązywać również w przypadku danych wyjściowych obarczonych błędem. W pracy omówiono metodę regularyzacji i pewne sposoby konstrukcji operatorów regularyzujących występujących w tej metodzie. Na przykładzie równania całkowego Fredholma I rodzaju pokazano metodę wyznaczania rozwiązania przybliżonego.
The paper has a form of review article. The aim of the paper is to explain the meaning of solution of ill posed problem. Moreover, it is shown that by using an appropriate method the ill posed problem can be reasonably solved also in the case of incexact data. The regularization method and, especially, certin methods of constructing regularization operators are discussed. The method of approximate solving of ill posed problems is illustrated by an example of the 1st kind Fredholm equation.

Let S be a degree preserving linear operator of ℝ[X] into itself. The question is if, preserving orthogonality of some orthogonal polynomial sequences, S must necessarily be an operator of composition with some affine function of ℝ. In [2] this problem was considered for S mapping sequences of Laguerre polynomials onto sequences of orthogonal polynomials. Here we improve substantially the theorems of [2] as well as disprove the conjecture proposed there. We also consider the same questions for polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle.

In this note we present necessary and sufficient conditions characterizing conditionally weakly compact sets in the space of (bounded linear) operator valued measures $M_{ba}(Σ,(X,Y))$. This generalizes a recent result of the author characterizing conditionally weakly compact subsets of the space of nuclear operator valued measures $M_{ba}(Σ,₁(X,Y))$. This result has interesting applications in optimization and control theory as illustrated by several examples.

Let L be a Banach lattice of real-valued measurable functions on a σ-finite measure space and T={$T_t$: t < 0} be a strongly continuous semigroup of positive linear operators on the Banach lattice L. Under some suitable norm conditions on L we prove a general differentiation theorem for superadditive processes in L with respect to the semigroup T.
