W badaniach naukowych wykorzystujących tradycyjne dokumenty osobiste zasadniczo stosuje się dwa podejścia: tzw. metodę biograficzną oraz metodę filologiczną. Badacz dziejów Żydów polskich odwołujący się do źródeł osobistych, napotykając na wiele trudności związanych z materialnym pozyskaniem i odczytaniem takich dokumentów, musi dodatkowo obrać jedną z metod i konsekwentnie oraz świadomie ją stosować, aby wykazać zasadność wyprowadzania na podstawie jednostkowych historii osobistych wniosków i generalizacji dotyczących epok, zjawisk, trendów kulturowych czy postaw całych grup społecznych. W artykule przypomniano zasady i zakres stosowania metody filologicznej w oparciu o kanoniczny model funkcji języka Karla Bühlera (das Organonmodell ) oraz przedstawiono kilka nowoczesnych narzędzi tekstologicznych i (pragma)lingwistycznych, które poszerzają granice tradycyjnie pojmowanej metody filologicznej, pozwalając na bardziej zobiektywizowaną interpretację dokumentu osobistego.
When using traditional life writing as source for scholarly research, one usually applies either the biographical or the philological method of analysis. For a researcher of the history of Polish Jews obtaining and deciphering such documents is already a challenging task; he or she should however choose and consciously apply just one of the above-mentioned methods in order to support any conclusions drawn from single life stories and any generalizations regarding the times, places, cultural phenomena and choices of the social groups in question. This paper describes the philological method’s principles and scope in relation to Karl Bühler’s classic Organon Model. It also presents several modern tools used in text linguistics and discourse analysis, all of which broaden the traditional understanding of the philological method thereby allowing a more objective interpretation of life writing practices.

Z kolei analiza niepublikowanych dzienników Wirpszy zachowanych w jego archiwum, zwłaszcza zeszytu zatytułowanego Zapiski datowane, bez porządku, potwierdza niechęć poety do intymistyki i utrwalania stanów psychicznych.
The paper explores the question of autobiographism of the neo-avant-garde literary works by Witold Wirpsza, trying to determine the significance of journal as a genre to it. Wirpsza’s meta-literary comments present him as an author who rejected biographism in favor of experimenting. It is simultaneously shown that some of his poems (especially from Granica wytrzymałości and Przypomnienie Hioba) and novels (Pomarańcze na drutach, Sama niewinność) can be read as results of experimenting with life writing. The analysis of Wirpsza’s unpublished journals, especially the notebook entitled Zapiski datowane, bez porządku confirms the poet’s disdain for intimate writing and consolidating psychological states.

Migration always involves loss, which inspires potential writers and is itself often the focus of migrants’ narratives. Seen through this monodimensional attachment to things left behind and hence not particularly valued, written and unwri tten stories of migrants’ experiences are themselves prone to disappear, together with the memory of their authors. This paper exam-ines the work of a biographer and poet, Bogumiła Żongołłowicz, commited to recovering and preserving achievements of Polish post-war migrants in Australia, reclaiming forgotten or unappreciated literary works for future readers, and celebrating life and memory of those who would otherwise perish as well.

Autor omawia trzy słowniki autobiograficzne (dwa zostały pomyślane jako takie, w trzecim udział haseł związanych z tym obszarem badań jest wyraźny) pochodzące z różnych kręgów językowych i opierające się na odmiennych metodologiach i perspektywach badawczych. Mimo różnic wszystkie trzy, jak przekonuje, dowodzą, z jednej strony, nieustannie rosnącego wpływu perspektywy autobiograficznej zarówno w badaniach nad literaturą, jak i w codziennym doświadczeniu, z drugiej zaś pilnej potrzeby poszerzenia granic pojmowania autobiografizmu, którego dziś już nie sposób zamknąć w kategoriach literackich i literaturoznawczych.
The Author discusses three autobiographical dictionaries (two of them are autobiographical in a strict sense of the term, the third one bares a visibly autobiographical approach), each representing a different language as well as founded on various methodological approaches. According to him despite the differences they all prove the ever growing influence of autobiography on both literature and on our everyday experience. The former – the Author concludes – evidences additionally that viewing autobiography as a uniquely a literary term is far too narrow a category.

The paper deals with a little-known translation of the Vulgate Psalter which was published anonymously in 1700 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye by the printer of the exiled court of King James VII of Scotland and II of England. The paper argues in favour of the originality of the translation in the face of the claim expressed in the literature that it represents a revision of an earlier English rendition made from the Vulgate published in 1610 as part of the Douay-Rheims Bible. The adduced data draw from history, life writing studies and linguistics, thereby offering multidisciplinary evidence in favour of the originality of the rendition.

Opis:
The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

W artykule omówione zostało pojęcie eksperymentalnych i chorobowych zapisów życia na podstawie korespondencji Franciszki Themerson, a także jej rysunków korespondencyjnych oraz dzieł sztuki. Zauważyłam, że awangardystka stosowała spójne metody kompozycyjne w podejmowaniu tematu swojej choroby tak w zapisach życia, jak i w sztuce awangardowej. Taktyka „przekształcenia” przybierała w przypadku korespondencji, rysunków oraz obrazów formy autoironii, żartu, dystansowania się wobec własnej cielesności w stanie chorobowym. Przeanalizowana korespondencja jest jednym z nielicznych przykładów znanych nam zapisów autobiograficznych malarki, które w większości zdeponowane zostały w Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, częściowo również w Bibliotece Narodowej w Warszawie (Archiwum Themersonów).
The article discusses the concept of experimental and illness-related life-writing records on the basis of Franciszka Themerson’s correspondence, and her correspondence-related drawings and works of art. I have established that the avant-garde artist was using coherent compositional methods in taking up the topic of her illness both in her life-writing records and in her avant-garde art. The tactics of “transformation” in her correspondence, drawings and paintings assumed the form of self-irony, joke, distancing herself from her own body in the state of illness. The analysed correspondence is one of few cases of the painter’s autobiographical records we know of; they were stored in the Museum of Art in Łódź, as well as in the National Library of Poland in Warsaw (The Themerson Archive).

In her multifaceted, polyphonic essay “The Gift of Biography,” Caroline Stoessinger offers her reader an intimate insight into the emotional substratum of the ineffable bond between the biographer and her subject. The rapport, whose complex texture involves compassion, respect, and attentiveness, unwittingly manifests itself to the reader as the sine qua non condition of an authentic dialogue soon after he or she accepts Stoessinger’s invitation to join her in retracing the history of her friendship with Alice Herz-Sommer, the heroine of her internationally acclaimed book A Century of Wisdom. In the process of the shared recollection, the emotional horizons of the autobiographer and the reader fuse, allowing the latter to sense that the (auto)biography to which she or he has been made privy, has been gifted to them by the author, who has, imperceptibly, become a dear friend. Two selves sharing their inner lives – Herz-Sommer and Stoessinger, Stoessinger and the reader – share the space of authenticity, in which the hope that reverberates through the genius of Beethoven pierces the darkest of nights.
W swym wieloaspektowym, polifonicznym, ale jednoznacznie autobiograficznym eseju “Dar biografii” Caroline Stoessinger oferuje czytelnikowi osobisty wgląd w subtelności emocjonalnego podłoża niewyrażalnej słowami więzi między biografką a jej bohaterką. Ta symfoniczna więć, której złożona struktura obejmuje współczucie, szacunek i uważność, bezwiednie objawia się czytelnikowi jako warunek sine qua non autentycznego dialogu kiedy tylko przyjmie zaproszenie Stoessinger, towarzyszyć jej w podróży przez historię jej przyjaźni z Alice Herz-Sommer, bohaterką tłumaczonej na wiele języków książki autorki pod tytułem Wiek mądrości. W procesie wspólnego wspominania horyzonty emocjonalne (auto)biografki i czytelnika stapiają się, pozwalając mu wyczuć, że (auto)biografia, w jaką został wtajemniczony, została mu ofiarowana w darze przez autorkę, która – niepostrzeżenie – stała się mu bliską przyjaciółką. Dwie jaźni dzielące swoje wewnętrzne życie – Herz-Sommer i Stoessinger, Stoessinger i czytelnik – dzielą przestrzeń autentyczności, w której nadzieja rozbrzmiewa w sonatach Beethovena, przeszywając nawet najciemniejszy mrok.

The paper examines the memoir The Book of My Lives by Bosnian-American writer Aleksandar Hemon. This non-fiction work explores the author’s childhood in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina before the collapse of Yugoslavia, and then his exile experience in Canada and the United States after the outbreak of the war. Through the prism of memory, the book deals with the subject of exiles, uprootedness and efforts to start a new life in a new environment. Being an autobiographical record, The Book of My Lives lends itself to the examination of the issue of exile and memory issues, which is one of the two themes of this paper. The second concerns the understanding of the relationship between memory and space. The paper seeks to show how the spatial dimension is also important for the creation of memory because memories represent an essential factor for the transformation of abstract space into a particular place.

Tekst jest wstępnym rozdziałem z książki Carolyn Steedman „Służąca i jej pan. Miłość i praca w Anglii wieku industrialnego” (Master and Servant. Love and Labour in the English Industrial Age). Tytułowa służąca to Phoebe Beatson, której losy Steedman rekonstruuje na podstawie dziennika jej pracodawcy – pastora Johna Murgatroyda. Zestawiając to świadectwo z innymi dokumentami życia społecznego epoki, Steedman pisze historię klasy pominiętą w tradycyjnych marksistowskich historiografiach – historię kobiecej służby domowej.
A translated chapter of Carolyn Steedman’s book Master and Servant. Love and Labour in the English Industrial Age. This text reconstructs the experience of a 18th-century servant, Phoebe Beatson, on the basis of a diary of John Murgatroyd, her employer. Confronting this testimony with other documents of social life, Steedman constructs a history of a class overlooked by traditional Marxist historiography – female domestic servants.

Relying on post-war biographies of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the article provides an insight into how his life as a writer was modelled through recurring similarities and differences of representation. Both factual and methodological portrayals seem uniform. In 1954 the biographical calendar presented by Julian Krzyżanowski became a point of reference for all following profiles of Sienkiewicz. Moreover, the biographers seem to utilize personal documents in a similar manner – they are to validate their stories. The resulting life writing appears to hold peculiar control over the protagonist’s life, suggesting that special-temporal distance allows us to see more than Sienkiewicz did himself.

The literary salons of the 19th century Europe in the prospective of travel writing: Antoni Edward Odyniec’s Weimar and Milan A.E. Odyniec’s Listy z podróży (Letters from Travels), set within the context of multinational testimonies from the epoch, become a pretext for a meditation on the phenomenon of the Romantic „salon” as a form of cultured life which is being enacted in the author’s private home, where an audience-instigated meeting between the writer and his admirers is taking place. The observations concerning the writers’ international contacts are also accompanied by remarks on the self-creative measures used by Odyniec as well as on the possibility of interpreting his controversial Listy… (Letters from Travels) in the context of research on the literary image of the period. The main subject of reflection is the ritual of visits to the homes of eminent artists which constituted one of the significant elements of educational trips in Europe; this is illustrated by examples of such institutions as Goethe’s Weimar and Manzoni’s Milan homes. The literary salons of this period, which grew out of the Enlightenment tradition, turn out to be an important element of a supra-national republique des lettres, whereas the experience of a direct contact with an outstanding individual (documented among others by J.P. Eckermann, Stendhal, F.L. von Raumer and many others) have been shown in the above-mentioned account from a journey, through the angle of „I” and portrayed in the categories of personal experience

Artykuł zamierza wykazać wpływ prawa na procesy humanizacji życia w wymiarze osobowym i społecznym. Prawo to powszechne doświadczenie wszystkich ludzi, jest tworzone przez człowieka i dla człowieka: „cum igitur hominum causa omne ius constitutum sit”. Fundament prawa opiera się na jednakowej i niezbywalnej godności osoby ludzkiej. Człowiek posługuje się prawem w wysiłku realizacji swego człowieczeństwa i lepszej przyszłości. Prawo to także kluczowy regulator życia społecznego, prawo konsoliduje więzi społeczne, wzmacnia struktury państwa, tworzy wspólnotę narodów. Humanizację prawa objawia jego wyzwalająca funkcja. Prawo stanowi oparcie dla słabszych, człowiek swojej pozycji nie musi bronić siłą, jego miejsce w społeczeństwie gwarantuje mu prawo. Dzięki prawu w sytuacjach konfliktowych został wygaszony dźwięk broni. Człowiekowi w poszukiwaniu procedur organizacji życia przyświeca idea zawarta w twierdzeniu Anaksymandera z Miletu, iż człowiek pragnie być sobą, człowiek zabiega o kształt swego losu. Prawo dąży do realizacji sprawiedliwości, chce oddać każdemu to, co mu się należy. Prawo nie utożsamia się z moralnością – to jednak nie może uznać za słuszne tego, co jest złem z punktu widzenia moralnego. Prawo odwołuje się do prawdy, choć prawdy nie dekretuje, to jednak prawo oparte na kłamstwie byłoby destrukcją samego prawa. W demokratycznym państwie o tym, co jest prawem, stanowi większość obywateli. Większość głosów nie orzeka o prawdzie, nie stanowi o tym, co dobre, a co złe etycznie. Decyzja większości stanowi o tym, co jest legalne. System demokracji opiera się na zasadach wolności i równości wszystkich obywateli. Dzięki tym zasadom respektuje się zarazem zdania tych, którzy są w mniejszości. Tworzenie prawa jest sztuką „ars legesferendi”. Prawo nie jest fotografią społeczeństwa, prawo nie mówi, jak jest, lecz jak być powinno; stąd „lex respicit futura”. Prawo liczy na szansę przemiany człowieka, na budowę świata o bardziej ludzkim wizerunku. Prawnika można porównać z powołaniem lekarza. Lekarz staje nad chorym, aby go leczyć, a nie zajmować się wypisywaniem recept, choć proces leczenia następuje poprzez wypisywanie recept. Podobnie prawnik nie może ograniczać swojej uwagi do świata norm, lecz poprzez normy i ich aplikację czynić świat bardziej sprawiedliwym i godnym człowieka.
The article intends to demonstrate the impact of law on humanization processes of life in the personal and social dimension. The law, this universal experience of all people, is created by man and for man: „cum igitur hominum causa omne ius constitutum sit”. The foundation of law is based on the equal and inalienable dignity of the human person. Man uses the law in the effort to realize his humanity and a better future. The law is also a key regulator of social life, the law consolidates social bonds, strengthens the structures of the state, creates a community of nations. Humanization of the law is revealed by its liberating function. The law can be the support for the weak, a man does not have to defend his position, his place in society guarantees him the law. Thanks to the law, the weapon’s sound was muted in conflict situations. Man in search of procedures for organizing life is guided by the idea contained in the theorem of Anaximander of Miletus that man desires to be himself, man strives to shape his fate. The law strives for justice and wants to give everyone its due. The law does not identify with morality – but this cannot be considered as right what is evil from a moral point of view. The law refers to the truth, although it does not decree the truth, but the law based on lies would be the destruction of the law itself. In a democratic state, what is the law is up for the decision the majority of citizens. Most voices do not rule in accordance with the truth, they do not determine what is good and what is ethically wrong. The majority’s decision is what is legal. The democracy system is based on the principles of freedom and equality of all citizens. Thanks to these principles, the opinions of those who are in the minority are respected. Creating the law is the art of “ars legesferendi”. The law is not a reflection of society, the law does not say how it is, but how it should be; hence the “lex respicit futura”. The law counts on the chance of human transformation and building a world with a more human image. A lawyer’s mission can be compared to vocation of a doctor. The doctor stands over the patient to treat him and not deal with writing prescriptions, although the treatment process is done by writing prescriptions. The comparison with the role of the doctor emphasizes this idea: the doctor writes a prescription, but it is not the prescription that heals, but the drug. Similarly, in a legal norm, it is not about the letter, the spirit of the law. The Scriptures say that the letter kills and the spirit gives life. Hence we are talking about the spirit of the law.

Opis:
This article outlines selected shifts in thinking about authorship and authority that have occurred in literary and cultural studies in the aftermath of Roland Barthes’s proclamation of the death of the author, followed by the author’s many revivals. Reconsidering Barthes’s seminal essay and confronting it with Michel Foucault’s query about the author-function, the article comments on Seán Burke’s polemical stance concerning situated authorship. Against these general considerations, several areas in which authorship and authority have been reconceptualized are briefly discussed, referring to the themes addressed in this volume. These areas embrace the problems of representing and using somebody else’s story in visual arts and testimonial theatre, the challenges of individual and cultural situatedness of writing within one’s own output and in reference to more general cultural hauntings as well as the processes of self-formation in the interactions between a variety of texts forming life-writing.
