Opis:
Following G. Bellmann, the article divides the German loanwords in Czech and Slovak roughly into two groups, namely those lexical units that represent a basic code extension (= type A) and those that are used immediately after adoption as (approximately) synonymous lexical duplicates of already existing designations (= type B). While type A words have the best chances of lasting integration, type B words elicit a competitive situation between old and new designations, which can result in substitution, negative integration or semantic diversification. Furthermore, the paper deals with idiosyncrasies of German loanword integration such as the expressiveness of German loanwords in Czech and Slovak and the emotional attitude towards German loanwords in those languages. The article also discusses the causality of displacement and substitution of German loanwords, subsequently elaborates on the loss of terms and realities, the change in domain-specific language use, the role of language awareness and language culture, the loss of immediate contact areas as well as the question of prestige, and concludes with an outlook on future developments.

Lexical platform – the first step towards user-centred integration of lexical resourcesLexical platform – the first step towards user-centred integration of lexical resources The paper describes the Lexical Platform - a means for lightweight integration of independent lexical resources. Lexical resources (LRs) are represented as web components that implement a minimal set of predefined programming interfaces. These provide functionality for querying and generate a simple, common presentation format. Therefore, a common data format is not needed and the identity of component LRs is preserved. Users can search, browse and navigate via resources on the basis of a limited set of anchor elements such as base form, word form and synset id.

Opis:
As underlined in Wierzbicka (1996: 239), a «linguistic definition is a scientific hypothesis about the concept encoded in a given word». The present paper focuses on the problem of what such hypothesis is about. Lexicon of any language is structured with a set of connections relating lexical items. That is to say that speakers of any language need to master not only separate words, but rather a cluster of connected senses. If so, then a lexical definition should lay out the concept the word lexicalizes in the way that gives access to the whole grasp of its conceptual, paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations. We discuss the topic of definitional structures developed in the context of the French Lexical Network (Réseau Lexical du Français).

Few drinks are as present in French culture as absinthe. This spirit, treated by some as a fée verte (‘green fairy’), accused by others of “making it mad and criminal”, has provided a motif widely exploited in literature, painting, song, and so on. The effects of this specific alcohol, its ritual, its sociality, the addiction it provoked were often addressed in the speech of the great French and world literature. The use of absinthe was widely popularized in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in all social circles. Consequently, the drink obtained in French several informal appellations, oscillating between the meliorative formulations like fée verte (‘green fairy’) and pejoratives, like poison vert (‘green poison’). In our article, we discuss the lexicon of absinthe, standard and non-standard, as well as the way different French authors have spoken about absinthe in their works.

A new metaphor of two-dimensional text for data-driven semantic modeling of natural language is proposed, which provides an entirely new angle on the representation of text: not only syntagmatic relations are annotated in the text, but also paradigmatic relations are made explicit by generating lexical expansions. We operationalize distributional similarity in a general framework for large corpora, and describe a new method to generate similar terms in context. Our evaluation shows that distributional similarity is able to produce high-quality lexical resources in an unsupervised and knowledge-free way, and that our highly scalable similarity measure yields better stores in a WordNet-based evaluation than previous measures for very large corpora. Evaluating on a lexical substitution task, we find that our contextualization method improves over a non-contextualized baseline across all parts of speech, and we show how the metaphor can be applied successfully to part-of-speech tagging. A number of ways to extend and improve the contextualization method within our Framework are discussed. As opposed to comparable approaches, our framework defines a model of lexical expansions in context that can generate the expansions as opposed to ranking a given list, and thus does not require existing lexical-semantic resources.

The subject of the present paper is the notion of ‘lexical competence’. This type of competence is often analysed in a too narrow sense, although over the years the notion has been broadened.
Our research focuses on the analysis of the lexical field of love in Hungarian youth slang. The point of departure of our research is Dávid Szabó’s doctoral thesis entitled L’argot des étudiants budapestois (The youth slang of Budapest), published in 2004, which contains in an appendix a Hungarian-French bilingual dictionary of youth slang. Based on Szabó’s research and dictionary, our online questionnaire study had three main objectives: 1) verify the frequency of use of words and expressions related to the lexical field of love and present in Szabó’s dictionary, 2) collect a new corpus composed of words and expressions presenting the actual usage, 3) analyse some communicative situations in which those words and expressions are used. Our article drew the conclusion that Hungarian youth slang both does and does not change. Nearly twenty years after Szabó’s research, there are of course new expressions used by young Hungarians, but the various mechanisms governing word formation in Hungarian youth slang remain the same.

In order to properly classify the phraseme (that is, a constrained, or non-free, expression) No parking, a universal typology of lexical phrasemes is proposed. It is based on the following two parameters:• The nature of constraints— Lexemic phrasemes: the expression is constrained with respect to freely constructed meaning.—  Semantic-lexemic phrasemes: the expression is constrained/non-constrained with respect to the meaning constrained by the conceptual representation.—  Pragmatemes: the expression is constrained with respect to pragmatic conditions, that is, to the extralinguistic situation of its use (in a letter, on a street sign, on a package of perishable food).• The compositionalityThe expression can/cannot be represented as regular “sum” of its components. As a result, we have, firstly, the following major classes of lexical phrasemes:1)  Non-compositional lexemic phrasemes: idioms (˹cold feet˺, ˹shoot the breeze˺)2)  Compositional lexemic phrasemes: collocations (rain heavily, pay a visit)3)  Non-compositional semantic-lexemic phrasemes: nominemes (Big Dipper, New South Wales)4)  Compositional semantic-lexemic phrasemes: clichés (See you tomorrow! | Absence makes the heart grow fonder.)For clichés, the least-studied class of phrasemes, a more detailed classification is proposed (as a function of the type of their denotation). Secondly, each phraseme (except a nomineme) and each lexemes can be pragmatically constrained, i.e. a pragmateme: ˹Fall out!˺ (idiom; a military command) | Take aim! (collocation; a military command) | Emphasis mine/added (cliché; in a printed text) | Rest! (lexeme; a military command).

It is widely accepted that terminological minimum is a practical means used for the selection of specialist vocabulary to be taught at various proficiency levels in LSP courses. This popular understanding of the notion renders it similar to the concept of lexical minimum; from the didactic perspective, the two notions seem to largely overlap, being in fact vocabulary lists based mainly on the frequency parameter. However, this picture has largely obscured the true ontological status of the two concepts, and it was not until only recently that the notion of lexical minimum was defined in a more comprehensive way, bringing to light some of its most salient characteristics. Likewise, it seems necessary to re-define the notion of the terminological minimum, if only on account of the specific nature of the lexical unit included in them, i.e. the term. The current paper attempts to elucidate the notion in question and to provide a methodological framework for the compilation of a modern terminological minimum.

The analyzed composition of homilies was created in one of the most resilient centers of Greek Catholic Eastern Rite who were well known for their attachment to Ruthenian culture and langu- age, in Poczajow in Wolyn and it was designated for Estern Rite priests and believers of Eastern Rite confines dioceses. The composition of written in Cyrillic alphabet homilies is attributed to Julian Dobrylovski. According to the author assumption, language of the piece, close to simple spoken language was supposed to be understood for believers of Greek Catholic Church. Thanks to this Nauki is the remarkable material for the analysis of factual state of language in the century it was created in. The subject of the analysis were the definitions of the lexemes that occur in the relic which include element it means, for example: vú ladiju, èili vú èovenú rybackij and others (148 pairs). The study proved that the majority of lexemes belong to the Ukrainian language. Therefore, the analysis of the language of Nauki has a capital meaning in the studies on the development of Ukrainian literature language. It fulfills already existing notices and language description of the period of their creations with the religious, pulpit literature work. This kind of literature was omitted in linguistic description till recently with various causes (among all with the conviction that this genre works are written in fossilized Church Slavonic language).

The article discusses of acquiring borrowings in the Ukrainian dialect over the territory of river San, occurring on Polish territory. Examined dialect is classified to south-western team of Ukrainian dialects and because of location it possesses features of insular dialects - peripheral. Assimilation and linguistic interference are on the factors contributing to acquiring borrowings from Polish language. This process, at the present stage of functioning of the dialect, is increasing phenomenon. Full or partial adaptation of Polish borrowings constitutes a contemporary source of enrichment of dialect vocabulary. However, the uses of this dialect retain their national and religions identity, the characteristic feature of East Slavic-Ukrainian lingual area.

The German pronunciation of〈ä〉as [æ] shows great variation, being this one of the main theoretical challenges in the German vocalism. This situation points to a case of sound change in progress. According to Dressler’s (1972) theory of lexical fading, fluctuation occurs when a phoneme is disappearing. The recessive phoneme fades away slowly and gradually, not only from the lexicon, but also from individuals. Accordingly, [æ] is disappearing from the lexicon. I will illustrate here the fading path of the [æ] pronunciation. To do this, I developed a reading aloud test, which contains lexemes with lexically (Käse ‘cheese’), phonologically (Bären ‘Bears’ vs. Beeren ‘berries’) and morphologically (Bällchen ‘little ball’ or Väter ‘fathers’) motivated 〈ä〉 graphemes. The out-loud reading of 33 subjects, all with a DaF background, was recorded and all their 〈ä〉-productions analyzed auditorily. My main finding was that the [æ]-pronunciation is more resistant to fading when it fulfills either a semantic function, as in the case of minimal pairs, or a morphological function, for instance, when it serves as a signal of a morphological category, as in Bällchen, or is itself the main signal, as in Väter.

This article aims at treating the lexical field of the ALCOHOL, which is extremely rich in all slangs, including the Romanian slang. Without pretending to be exhaustive – which is practically impossible under the conditions of a veritable plethora of terminology conveyed in this field – we will merely offer a series of metaphors that name alcohol, both those that are most well-known and some that are surprising. These metaphors and metaphorical constructions prove that the inventiveness of slang users is inexhaustible. Thus, due to the fact that the idea that alcohol is a medicine is deeply rooted in the popular mind of Romanians, what I have called the ‘medical metaphor’ is very well represented in the Romanian slang (e.g. doctorie – from ‘doctor’/‘physician’ + suffix ‘-ie’ – means ‘spirit drink’). Especially at the declarative level, religious Romanians also use the religion-related vocabulary to use words that they attribute with an ‘alcoholic’ meaning, e.g. agheasmă (sl. agiazma or ngr. αγιασμα – agiásma), which translates into ‘holy water’, also means ‘spirit drink’ and is part of the ‘religious metaphor’.

Both cognitive linguists and relevance theorists are developing original approaches to metaphor. Both shed new light on old debates and suggest fruitful directions for research. Although there has so far been little interaction between the two approaches, Raymond Gibbs and Markus Tendahl (2006, 2008) have recently begun to compare them and consider how they might be combined. This paper is intended as a contribution to that debate. After outlining some parallels and differences between the two approaches, I will discuss how they might fit together to give a fuller picture of the role of metaphor in language and thought.

The subject matter of this article is the adverb mimowolnie, which I compare with such expressions as mimo woli and odruchowo. However the aim of the discussion is to establish the semantic difference between these adverbs. In the article, I attempt to justify the hypothesis that the semantic relation between them is similar to the one noticed by A. Wierzbicka, in her work from 1969, where she ephasizes the non-identicaliyu of subjects in such sentences as Adam waży 70kg. and Adam jest dobry. (Wirzbicka 1969: 62, 63). In order to prove the hypothesis proposed, I demonstrate the semantic restrictions imposed by the lexical unit mimowolnie on verbs (e.g. perceptual verbs), and then I try to explain what they stem from. At the end of the article, I put forward the thesis that the adverb mimowolnie contains, in its semantic structure, an explicitly specified object of activity, which is one's own body and that it designates the agent's attitude toward his or her body that is performing the given activity.

The present article surveys the main directions of the contemporary lexical-semantic typology and how the German language data can be applied to the existing classifications. The diachronic aspect concerns the typology of lexical change, namely universals and particulars of semantic change, lexical borrowing and word formation. The synchronic aspect has two different perspectives: one is onomasiological, directed at the determination of universal and specific models of lexicalization of concepts; the other is semasiological, which is expressed in the comparative analysis of the semantics and structure of the polysemy of corresponding lexemes.

This paper investigates the interplay between the metrical structure and phonotactic complexity in English, a language with lexical stress and an elaborate inventory of consonant clusters. The analysis of a dictionary- and corpus-based list of polysyllabic words leads to two major observations. First, there is a tendency for onsetful syllables to attract stress, and for onsetless syllables to repel it. Second, the stressed syllable embraces a greater array of consonant clusters than unstressed syllables. Moreover, the farther form the main stress, the less likely the unstressed syllable is to contain a complex onset. This finding indicates that the ability of a position to license complex onsets is related to its distance from the prosodic head.

On this occasion we will try to approach a topic that is not mentioned in the grammars, despite being quite frequent in the Spanish language, especially in its colloquial variety: that of the lexical reduplication type café café or guapo guapo. We begin with the explanation and presentation of the phenomenon and then focus only on the lexical reduplication i.e. the repetition of whole lexemes. We will present its mechanism of quantification (Roca and Suñer 1998), the supposed origin (Paasch-Kaiser 2015), its presence in the corpus and the theories about the role it plays in the language (Escandell Vidal 1991). In the end, we will proceed with the explanation of this phenomenon in terms of pragmatics, above all, that of illocutionary semantics (Wierzbicka 1999) and linguistic ethos (Baran 2010a, 2010b; Kerbrat-Orecchioni 2005; Nowikow 2003, 2006).

Traditional dialectology is developing more and more into historical dialectology, not only in Poland, for the reason that in many parts of the country vernaculars are disappearing more and more. Traditional dialectology describes the situation from several decades ago. Today’s speakers of vernaculars are very frequently “multi-codal”: they are also fluent in the general language. This means that, on the one hand, the usage of vernaculars and general language depends on social criteria, including situational factors, and on the other hand that spoken vernacular, if it persists at all, changes under the influence of the general language: usually, vernacular and general language are mixed, which is also influenced by social conditions. Younger representatives of Polish dialectology today express the view that (contemporary) dialectology functions de facto as a sub-discipline of sociolinguistics. The study argues that dialectology, which in its earlier phase was concerned with the search for ancient tribes or historical principalities, must partly move away from its old focus on vernaculars in the village, similarly to how the much younger sociolinguistics has moved away from its original focus on the linguistic behaviour of social classes. What unites both disciplines is that they study variations “within a language”, with sociolinguistics foregrounding social conditioning and dialectology territorial conditioning. If the current linguistic situation in modern, dynamic societies is to be captured, then one cannot do without the other. Since the methods and theories in sociolinguistics have developed enormously over recent decades, dialectology can profit more from sociolinguistics than vice versa.Using the vitality of German loan words in the current regiolect of Silesian as an example, quantitative procedures are used to show how such a dialectology could look, even in a largely urban and therefore dynamic society. The focus is on speakers’ multicodality in different social contexts. If, for example, synonymous lexical pairs exist in typical Silesian speech (here a Silesian Germanism and a general Polish “Polishism”), the isogloss becomes worthless as a central instrument for territorial distinction. The question is no longer where people say “a” or “b”, but with which frequency each element of such pairs is used in various positions in the material collected. Such differences in the frequency of usage can then be mapped for individual phenomena and larger territorial divisions of linguistic structural affinities can be abstracted from the individual maps, taking the place of conventional dialects.

Opis:
Task-based language teaching has recently become a mainstream research area in second language acquisition studies. One of the underexplored areas is task design and its influence on the measures of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. While most previous research into task design focused on manipulating planning time, note-taking, or task familiarity, one of the promising lines of investigation is how task difficulty may also be conducive to L2 acquisition. Task difficulty is understood as the cognitive burden placed on a learner performing a task. In the current study learners of English as a foreign language (n=28) performed three differently designed oral communicative tasks of increasing difficulty: (1) a brainstorming task, (2) a sorting and ordering task, and (3) a problem-solving argumentative task. Task difficulty, i.e. having to employ higher-order thinking skills improved learners’ L2 lexical complexity as measured by lexical diversity, lexical density, and word-frequency counts.

The article analyses archaisms and innovations established in dialectal dictionaries in the patois of the Ukrainian and other Slavonic languages which is a nominative sequence of the significant social-economic, scientific-engineering and cultural changes in the 20th and early 21st centuries, resulting in the restructuring of the lexical system of modern dialects: the extinction of words and some of their meanings, the appearance of new meanings and new lexemes.

We will restrict ourselves to the semantic-pragmatic level of the profile (Veniard, 2013: 55). Bearing in mind that the profile is one of the aspects of discourse analysis, especially in French linguistics, and that it is immanent of French/francophone corpus, we will try to see if the profile of some collocations anchored in the French media have their equivalents in Polish.

This study aims to explore the missing link between English textbooks used in high schools (9th-12th grades) and English university entrance exams (2010-2019) in Turkey on lexical and syntactic complexity levels by using corpus linguistics tools: AntWordProfiler, TAALED, and the L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (L2SCA). Official textbooks and complementary materials obtained from the Ministry of National Education have been compared against the official university entrance exams from the past decade. The results show that: (i) differences in lexical sophistication level can be observed between the two corpora, the lexical sophistication level of the exam corpus was higher than that of the textbook corpus, (ii) there is a statistically significant difference between the two corpora in terms of lexical diversity, the exam corpus has a significantly higher level of lexical diversity than the textbook corpus, (iii) statistically significant differences also existed between the two corpora regarding the syntactic complexity indices. The syntactic complexity level of the exam corpus was higher than that of the textbook corpus. The findings suggest that Turkish high school students who have to learn English with the official textbooks throughout their high school years will have to tackle low-frequency and more sophisticated words at a higher level of  syntactic complexity at the time of taking the nationwide exam. This, in return, creates a negative backwash effect, distorts their approach to L2, and raises other concerns about the misalignment between the official language education materials and nationwide exams.

Lexical Functional Grammar
Economy of Expression
Opis:
The purpose of a grammatical theory is to specify the mechanisms and principles that can characterize the relations of acceptable sentences in particular languages to the meanings that they express. It is sometimes proposed that the simplest and most explanatory way of arranging the formal mechanisms of grammatical description is to allow them to produce unacceptable representations or derivations for some meanings and then to appeal to a global principle of economy to control this overgeneration. Thus there is an intuition common to many syntactic theories that a given meaning should be expressed in the most economical way, that smaller representations or shorter derivations should be chosen over larger ones. In this paper we explore the conceptual and formal issues of Economy as it has been discussed within the theory of Lexical Functional Grammar. In LFG the metric of Economy is typically formulated in terms of the size of one component of syntactic representation – the surface constituent structure tree – but it is often left unstated which trees for a given meaning are to be compared and how they are to be measured. We present a framework within which alternative explicit definitions of Economy can be formulated, and examine some phenomena for which Economy has been offered as an explanation. However, we observe that descriptive devices already available and independently motivated within the traditional LFG formalism can also account for these phenomena directly, without relying on cross-derivational comparisons to compensate for overgeneration. This leads us to question whether Economy is necessary or even useful as a separate principle of grammatical explanation.

The paper is aimed at the problem of transformational word-formation meant as a dynamic process of formation of new expressions on the basis of linguistic models using entire forms of already existing expressions, which become motivated expressions that way. This problem was taken into consideration from this viewpoint often defined in linguistics as polysemy. One lexical unit was analyzed on the basis of many core glossaries and a homonym dictionary, and three was an attempt to falsify the theory of polysemy and substitute it with the theory of homonimoidality seen as a phenomenon of formal similarity of xpressions having different semantic features and retained derivational features (one of the expressions is a motivational one, another – motivated). The paper also presents a detailed description with a scheme of motivation of such lexical transformations of the entity, which is determined by a greater semantic elasticity. In the glossaries, the number of meanings for the lexical unit oscillated at 15–17 meanings but their definitions were different. The change in basic theory allowed both to distract and to order the semantic structure of homonimoids пройти.

Opis:
The work conducted for over ten months at IPI PAN has resulted in the creation of a working (and still further developed) corpus of the 20th-century Polish parliamentarisms. The corpus was created using parliamentary transcripts from the years 1918–2018 and as for now it contains nearly 200 million segments. On this basis, a preliminary analytical work on the language of the Polish parliamentarism of the twentieth century is being conducted. One of the first issues is the preliminary lexicographical and lexicological analysis of the assembled corpus. In order to show the extent of the corpus and its chronological complexity, a lexical and semantic analysis will be subjected to, for example, such lexemes as historia (history) and społeczeństwo (society). The analysis of the usage of these items in the Polish parliamentary discourse has shown that they are high frequency words, and that their meanings are subject to “specific pressures of parliamentarism” and slightly differ (depending on a particular period in history) from the meanings traditionally assigned to them in Polish lexicography.

The author notices that insufficient mastering the foreign language vocabulary may remarkably impede the communication process. Thus, it is important to form proper lexical habits based on methodical enriching the lexicon and the grammatical rules. This positively influences the communication improvement – both oral and written. The article presents the analysis of psycholinguistic regularities that influence the proper vocabulary acquisition, with the special attention paid to the memorising processes and the rules of proper memorising, as their knowledge is crucial for planning the work on enriching the lexicon and creating exercises on learning new vocabulary.

The paper presents the results of the analysis of the following lexical units with the word wystarczy: cośa wystarczyło, żeby p; cośa wsytarczyło do tego, żeby p; cośa wystarczyło komuśn do czegośb; wystarczyło, że q, a p. On the basis of the analysis of their valency and the conducted tests, the author states that all these lexical items imply that an event/a state of affairs caused another event/state of affairs and that someone, basing on their knowledge about the world, could think that this would not have happened. Further research has proven that two of those lexical units - cośa wystarczyło komuśn do czegośb, and cośa wystarczyło do tego, żeby p - imply, moreover, that an event/a state of affairs, caused by another event/state of affaits, was somehow desired. It has also turned out that the speaker using cośa wystarczyło komuśn do czegośb or wystarczyło, że q, a p, informs that the resultant event/state of affairs occurred right after the causative event/state of affairs.

This article analyzes the borders of synonyms of the Russian and Polish lexeme “life” in the ordinary consciousness of native speakers. The analysis of the results of interviews, as well as the electronic dictionary of synonyms, which is formed by the users themselves, demonstrate that in the consciousness of native speakers there are broader synonymic groups compared with those that are fixed in traditional dictionaries. Synonymic groups which are proposed by native speakers show that the main criterion for establishing the proximity of the meaning of words for a person is the ability to correlate on the basis of identity, similarity or inclusion certain fragments of reality denoted by these lexemes. The synonymy of sеnse, rather than of meanings, is the determining factor for the native speaker in the formation of a synonymic group

The article is concerned with reconstructing the cultural meanings included in the Polish signs “inny” (“different”) and “obcy” (“foreign”) and comparing them with their Russian and German counterparts, i.e. “другой” and “чужой”, “der Andere” and “der Fremde” respectively. The data for the comparative analysis were collected by means of the free association method. The features indicated by the respondents reflected culture-specific and language-specific associative profiles of images of the lexical items “different” and “foreign”, characteristic of the representatives of the Polish, Russian and German cultures. The results of the association test confirm that there exist numerous criteria which the Polish, Russian and German respondents referred to while specifying the meaning of “different” and “foreign”. The questionnaire allowed for establishing a hierarchy of the criteria as well as for indicating significant similarities and differences between the Polish, Russian and German associative definitions of both terms.

The analysis of errors was based on Andrzej Markowski's classification with small additions from Zygmunt Saloni’s classification. Due to the volumetric framework, the article is limited to discussing grammatical and lexical errors. The research showed that pupils with mild intellectual disabilities make similar errors as those with typical development. No qualitative differences were noted between the study group and the control group, only quantitative ones.

The article is the result of a search for effective tools that can support the process of enriching the individual lexicon of students. The possibilities of involving students in this process through the use of selected ICT tools were indicated. It was pointed out that the use of various platforms and mobile applications in the development and control of lexical skills is conducive to individualization of teaching, and its inclusion in the learning process requires an analysis for usefulness in achieving expected learning outcomes. Online learning platforms such as WordWall and LearningApps, that allow for the design of interactive exercises facilitating the learning of foreign languages, and in particular the improving of foreign vocabulary, were analyzed. Their use in the course of independent learning enables the enrichment of vocabulary in accordance with the interests and individual communication needs of students. The inclusion of these tools in the didactic process may positively affect the motivation to learn, and their systematic use, both in the classroom and during individual work, it also allows the acceleration of the memorization of the vocabulary of a foreign language.

This study investigates learners’ processing of English unaccusative verbs in the inchoative frame (The door opened; Oil is spilling). Previous approaches explained L2 difficulty with the inchoative construction in terms of learners’ L1 and their perception of discourse or semantic factors hypothesized to be responsible for common overpassivization errors (The door was opened). The purpose of the present study is to complement the extant inventory by proposing an additional factor instrumental in L2 processing. It is hypothesized that L2 use of unaccusative verbs is contingent on learners’ familiarity with formulaic expressions exemplifying the inchoative construction. The study focuses on the entrenchment of frequent phrases like My jaw dropped in Czech and Polish learners. In a lexical decision task, their reaction times for frequent expressions were found to be faster and fewer mistakes were made than in the case of non-formulaic counterparts (My hair dropped).

The press brings the reader closer not only to the news of a community but also to its language and culture. The objective of this study is to know the relationship between press consumption and lexical competence. Specifically, the weekly time spent by 171 graduate students from Malaga reading the press and its relationship with two lexical tests in Spanish – mother tongue – and French or English – foreign language – will be analysed. The results show that there is no significant relationship between available vocabulary and press consumption. Instead, the relationship is significant with the ability to identify technicalities when the data refer to the foreign language of the informants. These findings invite us to continue promoting didactic applications that integrate press reading both to improve lexical competence and to integrate the sociopragmatic component of the language.

The study shows that the nominal reduplication presents metalinguistic functions that reveal the interest of the speakers in a number of semantic issues related to the linguistic categorization and the concept of prototype. What is more, the metalinguistic aspect of the reduplicative constructions play a crucial role in a variety of situations as it entails some intersubjective meanings that are of a great importance for the interaction.

The article examines the quantitative differentiation in naming in the various Polish regions during the period of 1951–1960. The aim was to check whether the quantitative data for names are regionally differentiated, and has the interregional differences changed during the period considered. Selected measures of lexical richness (originally applied in the field of lexical statistics) were used to evaluate these differences. The direct reason for considering this case were the previously observed clear spatial patterns of first names with regard to its qualitative features. Present study has shown that also in the case of quantitative data there are some temporal and spatial differentiation in naming practices in Poland.

The development of the Internet gave life to Internet memes. Their diversity and rapid growth contributed to the formation of the memosphere, the development of which is accompanied by the emergence of lexical innovations. These include language memes and the names of meme genres. All of them are the result of linguistic creativity, which in relation to the names of meme genres, covers several stages: English loanwords for the name of the meme genre, their adaptation in Russian, changes in semantics, and preference for specific neologisms. The concept of lexical innovation was apprehended on the foundation of Markovsky’s concept. The study of lexical innovations was carried out within the framework of the structural-semantic direction, as well as on the basis of the theory of Kotelova and the concepts of Rakhmanova and Suzdaltseva. Studies have shown that semantic changes in the names of meme genres are associated with a denotation change. Changes in the semantics of word loaning are very dynamic as English loanwords enable the swift naming of new realities. This tendency towards the internationalization of vocabulary is related to the Internet and the memosphere. The obtained results fill the gap in the study of vocabulary related to the memosphere. A few studies of meme genres relate to their description and analysis, yet do not focus on the semantic and graphic modification of loanwords. This work presents the unprecedented mechanisms and stages of the formation of meme genres names.

This article is devoted to the basic theme „The ways of expressing the picture of the world in language”. In modern research, the usage of the expressions “the world image” and “picture of the world” is very urgent and topical. Language is closely connected with thinking, though is not identical with it. Each language has its own way of the expression of surrounding reality which is expressed in general national and specific systems of views for all its speakers. This leads to the formation of the unique national linguistic picture of the world, common for the whole community. The word “forest” occupies an important place in our consciousness; it implements a generic meaning of “nature” and has similar meanings in Russian and Polish linguistic pictures of the world. There exist some meanings of this word in Russian and Polish: a terrain overgrown with trees, a certain living creature, and construction material. Thus the word “forest” has an identical combinability in the related languages.

The author sets semantic motivations of names and he collates information from several languages for this purpose (he reaches for texts from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries). Mainly presented words didn’t survive, today they aren’t appearing in non-standard dialect.

The contribution deals with selected questions of the interaction between the so called “lexical aspect” (the opposition between telicity and atelicity) and the grammatical aspect (or so called “viewpoint”- aspect, i.e. the opposition between perfectivity and imperfectivity) in the languages with and without the overtly encoded aspect. The striking point of the analysis is the “complexive” meaning of aspectual forms and constructions involving lexical atelicity by indicating durativity or iterativity, on the one hand, and grammatical perfectivity by indicating the complexive perspective of the verbal action on the other. This type of aspectuality was a special feature of verbal systems with the aorist category. My claim is, thus, that the contemporary English has a special grammatical form of the “complexive aorist”, i.e. the form of Present Perfect Progressive. The Slavic languages encode this function by using the – unmarked – imperfective forms of the verbs, whereas German uses special means of encoding the very same function on the whole-clause level, such as adverbials or definite vs. indefinite or zero article.

Opis:
Observations on the Polish lexis in Lithuania on the borderland of Lithuania, Latvia and BelarusThe paper comments on the lexicon of Polish on the borderland of Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus (in the Zarasai district and the Ignalina district in Lithuania). The remarks, illustrated with selected examples, have been formulated on the basis of data gathered during field research in 2000–2001 and 2010–2011. The paper aims primarily at discussing the extent to which the collected material contributes to the state-of-the-art knowledge on the vocabulary of the North-Eastern Borderlands; the author analyzes the types of words present in the collected material in order to specify whether they are generally attested and well documented, or conversely – less known and only occasionally considered in literature.A large part of the collected material consists of vocabulary well known in Lithuania, and often in the whole area of the North-Eastern Borderlands. These include old expressions of various origin typical of the Eastern Borderlands, richly documented in works devoted to the Polish language of the North-Eastern Borderlands; loans from Lithuanian and Belorussian; or Polish archaic forms, e.g. asystentka ‘maid of honour’, budni ‘usual, ordinary’, fest ‘church fair’, gadzina ‘viper’, hurba ‘snowbank’, karszun ‘hawk’. Another numerous group are newer loanwords from Russian and Lithuanian, popularised in the post-war period, as well as in the recent years along with the changing role of the Lithuanian language, e.g. elektra ‘electric light, electricity’, awtoławka ‘travelling shop’, balnica ‘hospital’.A small, yet extremely interesting for researchers, part of the lexis is composed of vocabulary not so well known in the North-Eastern Borderlands or in Lithuania, regionally bound (exhibited solely in the examined areas or in two former tightly-knit Polish-speaking areas), with limited frequency (rare words, appearing in various regions, yet seldom recognized), or restricted as far as the chronology is concerned (not attested presently, until now known only from older, pre-war sources, mainly from the works of Halina Turska), e.g. bracienik ‘cousin’, ciuszka ‘blowhole’, czeladź ‘children, offspring’, lun ‘marsh, swamp’, babaczka ‘bow tie’, murawiejnik ‘anthill’, ciełuszutka ‘heiferdim’, światleć ‘to shine’.A separate group encompasses words previously undocumented in literature, e.g. wieczuruszkować ‘to go to soirees, parties in the evening’, including the unknown word-formation variants, e.g. walaniantówka ‘epilepsy’ vs. walentaczka/walantaczka, or the regionally-bound diminutive forms with typical suffixes, today rare, e.g. buteleniatka ‘bottledim’, chustalutka ‘handkerchiefdim’.It is worth emphasizing that certain parts of the described vocabulary might still be commonly used, however the scarcity of extensive lexical research, as well as the lack of a full dictionary of Polish of the North-Eastern Borderlands render it impossible to resolve this question.

Opis:
Parliamentary debate (PD) as a specific genre of parliamentary discourse exhibits a hybrid nature: part oral and part written discourse. It is performed orally, but planned ahead and formal. From the point of view of lexical cohesion, encapsulation by means of abstract and unspecific nouns (e.g. fact or reason) is an indicator of the informative density and the underlying written nature of PD. With the tools provided by Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics, this paper aims at describing and characterizing cross-linguistically lexical encapsulation’s potential to define the information structure of PD. In this regard, encapsulation is analyzed in relation to the notions of topic and focus in three PDs in Catalan, Spanish and English. In order to determine the contribution of encapsulation to the information structure of PD, we describe the properties of lexical encapsulation as a referential cohesion device and analyze the various lexico-grammatical and discourse patterns in which encapsulators occur. From a cross-linguistic point of view, the results show a higher frequency of encapsulation in the debate in English. In this respect, the Scottish debate exhibits a higher cohesive and informational density than the Catalan and the Spanish ones. However, there has also been observed a homogeneous crosslinguistic behavior of encapsulation with regard to weaving the information structure of PD. In fact, the different usage patterns uncover similar general trends in the three languages. These quantitative coincidences are interpreted as genre related features. On the other hand, some patterns unveil cross-linguistic differences linked to a more speaker-dependent style aiming at guiding the addressee (persuasive function) and to the lexico-grammatical features of each language.

This work deals with the situation of languages in contact and explores the nature of bilingual lexicon by studying lexical availability. Based on the results published in 2010 in Lèxic disponible de València, and in relation to ‘town’ as the center of interest, the study applied a new analytical tool called DispoGrafo, which enabled us to observe issues related to the construction and organization of the mental lexicon, for example, the incidence or profitability of facilitating semantic–priming–in clusters made up of three or more closely linked elements. The sample was obtained from 464 high school students of 2nd baccalaureate in the Valencia province, and was established to represent the ‘normal language’ variable. Two subgroups were formed: valencià-L1 (253 students) and valencià-L2 (211 students).

The paper offers an analysis of lexical-syntactic structures based on the verb form viser typical of a scientific text, that is a text that follows quite a stable and rigid structure. A corpus-based analysis, achieved through the use of the Scientext corpora, runs across two dimensions. The first dimension is constituted by the subject matter of the text while the other dimension concerns the relation between the author of the text and the recipient. The analysis presented is a two-stage process. At the first stage, lexical-syntactic structures are singled out. The second stage is to assign those structures to the particular parts of the text, such as Introduction, Main body, Conclusion.

The Current Evolution of Slavic Languages in Central and Eastern Europe in the Context of the EU Multilingualism PolicyThe respect for and protection of cultural and linguistic diversity have long been guaranteed in various international and European legislative acts. More recently, the European Union has also developed laws aimed at the preservation and promotion of multilingualism. Linguistic diversity has long been seen as an obstacle to the effective functioning of EU institutions. Recently, however, it has been considered as a valuable “heritage” of the EU.In our article, we will present a brief overview of policies promoting multilingualism in Europe, and more specifically, in the EU. Subsequently, we will compare this framework to the changes occurring presently in modern Slavic languages of Central and Eastern Europe. The tendency of these languages towards increased analitism transforms these predominantly synthetic languages into more analytical ones. These conclusions have led us to the following question: What is the current state of modern Slavic languages and how far may their evolution be addressed by policies promoting multilingualism? Our analysis consists of two parts: first, we scrutinised various European legislative acts promoting multilingualism; second, we analysed modern Slavic languages by means of the parallel corpora of chosen languages from the Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure project (including UNESCO and EU legislation, etc.).

The article shows historical and contemporary tendencies in Ukrainian onomastics. The purpose of this paper is to identify differences between street names in Vinnytsia and Ivano-Frankivsk and point out the changes connected with historical events. The main influence on street rename in Vinnytsya had Ukraine's accession to the Soviet Union, German occupation, and the liberation of the city from fascist invaders. However, in Ivano-Frankivsk the most important circumstance was disintegration of the Soviet Union. In article therea are three groups of names classified: memorial names, names connected with history and names connected with geography. The research shows that the biggest part of place names are commemorating names, dedicated to artists, scientists, social and political activists and USSR heroes. The last phenomenon of giving names in honor of USSR heroes is observed only in Vinnytsia, what may be connected with a sense of national belonging which is characteristic for the western part of the country. The smallest number of urbanonyms are geographical names. It should be emphasized that the research is only an experiment as the analysis concerns only selected street names in the cities.

Prior research demonstrates that primary and secondary school teachers often find teaching young learners to write in a second language a slow and effortful process. Moreover, students in this age range lack the motivation to write. Therefore, it is important to explore the EFL writing pedagogy suitable for young learners. The present study investigated how story continuation (with or without reading input) under different topic familiarity conditions serves as a viable pedagogical means for secondary school students. Ninety-one Chinese students in four intact classes of comparable proficiency levels were assigned four writing task conditions in a 2 ⨉ 2 factorial design. Group 1 (Fam) was provided with the beginning of a familiar story in L1 Chinese and was required to complete the story in L2 English. Group 2 (UnFam) had the same task as Group 1, with an unfamiliar story. Group 3 (Fam+Input) was initially provided with the complete familiar story in Chinese (the same story as Group 1) as reading input and were then instructed to write the story in English with the reading material taken away. Group 4 (Unfam+Input) received the full unfamiliar story in Chinese (the same story as Group 2) as input before writing. Again they were not allowed to refer to the reading in the composing process. The results revealed that the young learners who wrote on familiar topics (Groups 1 and 3) produced longer texts and demonstrated greater lexical diversity than those with unfamiliar stories (Groups 2 and 4), although topic familiarity did not affect their writing quality or lexical sophistication. As for the story continuation conditions, students who completed writing the story without the L1 reading input on the topics (Groups 1 and 2) developed longer compositions and better writing quality than those with such input (Groups 3 and 4), although their lexical profiles (both lexical diversity and lexical sophistication) remained uninfluenced. Pedagogical implications for EFL writing among young learners were also discussed in the present study.

This article is dedicated to translation as intercultural communication including the linguistic structure of a source-language text as well as its cultural elements. The aim of this paper is the exposition of the idea that semantic features (systemic and textual connotations) should be taken into consideration in translation. The outcome of translation (target-language text) should result in the semantic equivalent, which appears possible only if the translator considers both the hard core of the meaning of a word or its stylistic value and its linguistics connotations responsible for the semantic profile of its perception. The analysis of connotations is particularly useful when it is necessary to select between words having similar meaning in order to provide a proper translation. These considerations are illustrated by the analysis of two cases: the French and Italian translations of two aphorisms by Stanislaw Jerzy Lec and the Polish and English translation of the title of a novel by Francois Mauriac Le noeud de viper.

This article aims to give an overview of the way the French word “Littérature” came to adopt its usual contemporary meaning by 1750. Applying a lexico-semantic approach, it shows how the evolution of the word – the denotation of which moved from a wide general meaning to a specialized one – depends on the correlative semantic drift of the words “Lettres” and “Sciences” towards their contemporary antonymic meaning. It also explains how the neologism “Belles-Lettres,” which appeared around 1630, paved the way for the new meaning of “Littérature.” The article also calls for a comparative history of this semantic field in the main languages of Europe.

This contribution investigates the expression of emotions in a song within German contemporary literature, namely Wolf Biermann’s “Ermutigung”, from a linguistic perspective. The paper focuses particularly on processes of word formation by applying the Lexical Semantic Framework (LSF) to the German morphology. Among the ontological classes defined by LSF, the situations, and more specifically the sub-classes states and events/processes, can provide a linguistic interpretation of Biermanns main message - the encouragement. As the analysis of lexical items such as hart - yerharten, bitter - yerbittern, yerbrauchen - (ge)brauchen shows, the semantic features of German prefixes can play a certain role in this sense.

In the context of complete meaningful linguistic activities such as writing summaries, the paraphrase prompts reflection on the interaction between words, meaning and discourse, and thus helps develop the lexical component of discourse competence. Paraphrasing exercises are useful for both native and foreign language practice, especially for future translators, and lend students greater awareness of the shades of meaning distinguishing synonymic expressions in given contexts. We show that variations in meaning due to the use of synonyms and morpho-syntactical reformulations may be analyzed in terms of point of view and focalization, thereby taking into account the subjective and intersubjective dimensions of lexicon and discourse.

Opis:
The semantic analysis of the term “legitimisation” is a particularly major issue, because determining the understanding of this term has a fundamental meaning for further considerations of such important issues as the legitimisation of the power, the judiciary or the systemic position of a judge. In the doctrine of the constitutional law there are lacks in-depth semantic analyzes that would allow a precise explication of what lawyers think when they use the term “legitimisation”. Even a cursory analysis of the literature in this field could allow us to draw a preliminary conclusion that when we discuss about this term, in a significant part of the cases considered, there is no reflection on the meaning of the concept of “legitimisation” itself. In this study, author analyzed definitions of this concept, which appears in the dictionaries of the Polish language, and then confronted the established meanings with the understanding of “legitimisation” in the legal and lawyers’ language. In conclusions, author points two basic ways of understanding the term “legitimisation” and proposed to distinguish them by assigning the phrase “legitimacy” to one of these meanings, and “legitimisation” to the other.

It is argued that the allomorphy between syllabic and non-syllabic variants of some morphemes is due to phonological reduction which affects high frequency lexical items first and gradually extends on others by way of lexical diffusion. The analysis is supported by comparing the data of Standard Swahili to less conservative colloquial varieties and non-standardized local dialects, in which reductions are more advanced. The analysis contributes to a better comprehension of synchronic allomorphy and it also sheds light on the mechanism of diachronic change.

Mission statement is a genre of corporate management addressed to a large and diversified group of recipients. The aim of the investigated genre is to persuade them to accept the goals and actions of a corporation. It is the choice of relevant generic and register forms which plays a major role in the accomplishment of aims of a mission statement. Almost any contemporary handbook on management addresses the issue of the function and content of a mission statement. This contrasts with the relatively limited interest of linguists in this genre. The analysis presented below draws mainly on the research made by Priscilla Rogers and John Swales (1990), John Swales and Priscilla Rogers (1995), Piotr Mamet (2005), and Maja Wolny-Peirs (2005). The aim of the study is to investigate how certain translational shifts might alter the corporate image of the company. The analysed disourse features cover grammatical metaphor, lexical choice, omission, as well as syntactic and lexical interference.

Research on bilingual word recognition suggests that lexical access is nonselective with respect to language, i.e., that word representations of both languages become active during recognition. One piece of evidence supporting nonselective access is that bilinguals recognize cognates (words that are identical or similar in form and meaning in two or more languages) faster than noncognates. In fact, any difference between how cognates and ‘monolingual’ words are processed by multilinguals would indicate that the other, currently irrelevant language must have played a role as well, at least as long as the two groups of words are comparable with respect to all dimensions other than language membership. The aim of the present paper is to report on two visual perceptual experiments conducted within the lexical decision task paradigm whose aim was to test the assumptions concerning the special position of cognates (the cognate facilitation effect, cf. Dijkstra, 2005) within a trilingual mind and to answer the question whether trilinguals rely upon their second language lexical knowledge when recognizing L3 words. The results of the experiments attest to simultaneous activation and parallel processing as well as interaction among all the three languages. At the same time, they point to the fact that cross-linguistic lexical access and the source and strength of transfer may be constrained by variables such task demands.

This paper stems from a broader research project entitled Analog-based Modelling of Meaning Representations in English (Skrzypczak 2006), and aims to present grammatical aspect and lexical aspect as two modes of encoding the temporal profiles within the conceptualisation of processes (terminologically, in Langackerian sense, imperfective and perfective processes, otherwise, variously labelled as stative and dynamic verbs, i. e. states vs. discrete ‘unitary’ events and non-discrete ‘unbounded’ processes). It is assumed that aspect in both cases - as a process-profiling category - is analogous to the profiling of things and atemporal relations (in the sense of Langacker 1987, 1990, 2000), given the maximisation of the temporal domain in the characterisation of processes (perfective and imperfective, hence: dynamic and stative), and minimalisation of the temporal domain during the conceptualisation of things (conceptually independent entities) and atemporal relations (conceptually dependent atemporal configurations). The analogy between nouns and verbs in terms of ‘granularity’ has been so far variously addressed by Langacker (1990), Jackendoff (1991) and Talmy (2001), and also constitutes the core assumption in my research on topological modelling.

Opis:
This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book Динамика и иновации в лексикалната система на българския език, published in 2019 in Plovdiv. The book consists of nine parts, each dealing with a different type of linguistic processes (archaisation, terminologisation and determinologisation, lexicalisation, univerbation, neologisation, internationalisation) occurring in the lexical system of contemporary Bulgarian. Linguistic changes in the lexical sphere are presented in the context of dynamic changes in the methods of communication, determined by non-linguistic reality. The monograph deals with new vocabulary, from the end of the 20th century to the present day. It contains a synthetic review of certain positions within the scope of the discussed linguistic processes. An effort was also made to organise the terminology used in Bulgarian linguistic studies. The advantage of the monograph resides in the original propositions for the interpretation of individual phenomena and the author’s own propositions for definitions. What makes the publication particularly interesting is the presentation of an experimental study in the field of examining language competence and language memory of those Bulgarian language users who represent the generation of today’s students.

The article has verified a hypothesis suggesting that the sequences mentioned in the title and similar to them are constrained syntactic groups, i.e., they do not form a regular combination of simple signs. The verification has been conducted on the basis of a three-stage procedure taking into account the semantic features and inner qualities of the studied expressions, namely, their composition as well as the structural and linear links between segments. It has been indicated that the components of the studied sequences jointly express meaning which can be considered as a form of perlocution: ‘something changes within fragments of time undergoing observation whose measure is determined by a variable component’. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the two components of a sequence that can be exchanged can be realized not only by standard measures of time (second, minute, hour, week), but also by nouns referring to events (match, meeting, term). Also, there is a presentation of the basic limitations in the realization of a variable component and a mutual linear arrangement of variable and constant components. A characteristic of the expressions of the type from week to week, from novel to novel, from match to match is supplemented by the remarks concerning their external syntax.

The semantic classification of adjectives in the Bulgarian Wordnet: Towards a multiclass approachThe paper presents an attempt at semantic classification of adjectives in the Bulgarian wordnet. Although designed for the Bulgarian wordnet, the classification can be applied to other wordnets which are developed in parallel to the Princeton WordNet. The classification relies on information that is already available in WordNet from other synsets (noun, verb, and other adjective synsets) that are linked to the adjective synsets via lexico-semantic relations - including their semantic classes, as well as definitions and usage examples. The first stage of the work was already presented at the workshop "Challenges for WordNets" within the conference "Language, Data and Knowledge 2017". The continuation of the effort as described in this article, covers a proposal for introducing additional semantic classes to the adjective synsets (if applicable).

In New Zealand a peculiar language contact scenario has emerged from the mutual influence between the indigenous Māori language and English (cf. Benton 1985). Sharing the fate of many indigenous languages, Māori was overwhelmed by an imperial power but it was not eradicated. What remained of Māori was indisputably affected by English, but Māori also left its traces on the variety of English that developed in New Zealand. While the lexical influence of Māori on English has already been the subject of various studies, the impact of English on Māori still remains to be accounted for to a large extent (cf. Harlow 2004). This paper explores the presence of English lexical borrowings in Māori by analyzing the one thousand most frequent Māori words in the Māori Broadcast Corpus (Boyce 2006). In particular, the study will consider which types of English loans emerge among the core vocabulary of Māori and how these loans have been integrated in the language.

This article deals with the epistemological consistency of synonymy. When synonymy is defined as equality of meaning, it turns out to be a factually impossible relation. Therefore, scholars distinguish between full synonymy (ideal concept) and partial synonymy (real phenomenon). We argue that this distinction must be discarded in order to maintain consistency in synonymy. We propose that synonymy does not consist in the absence of different semantic nuances between meanings, but rather in the condition for finding different semantic nuances between meanings. This condition is interpreted as sharing the same “predicative schema” in the sense of Gaston Gross.

The lexical field of plants is composed of the following: 1. general names of plants, flowers, trees, and bushes; 2. concrete, genre names; 3. names of autonomic plant parts; 4. names of acreage filled with listed designates. Thus defined lexis has been subjected to a functional analysis, during which the poetic function and values the vocabulary under study have been shown. The works written by the two brothers and belonging to a similar trend of Baroque poetry, with regard to their genology and themes, show no principal differences with respect to the lexis under study. The differences result from different problems of the texts, the poets’ various experiences, and unequal talents.

The present article discusses the role of poetic texts in recreating and reestablishing modernist means for the conceptualization of the world. The article has been divided into two parts. The first part is to present the theoretical considerations on the participation of poetic materials in revealing the meaning of lexical units and the world’s conceptualization generated by a language lexicon. The other part includes a semantic analysis of the lexeme dziewanna (mullein), whose conceptual model has been reconstructed on the basis of modernist poetic texts. The analysis of artistic texts has made it possible to demonstrate conceptually the fundamental, though not attested in systemic facts, special features of the lexeme: [dziewanna] “has golden and yellow leaves”, “has a long and straight stem”, “is tall” and “blooms in summer”. Poetic texts also attest to the attribution “grows on barren land”, which has been preserved in the Polish proverb: Gdzie rośnie dziewanna, tam bez posagu panna (literally: [homestead] where mullein grows is where a portionless maid lives) All considerations done so far also indicate that the most important place within the conceptual framework of the word is occupied by the elements that belong to the domain: PHYSICAL FEATURES, and the range of colour characteristics in particular. These elements form a strong part of the semantic core of the name and determine numerous connotations such as: “beauty”, “perfectness”, “brightness”, “purity”, “joy”, “vitality”, “biological determination”, “joy of living”, “youth” and “health”, “fertility of nature”, “fertility”, “abundance”, “richness”, “eroticism” and “sexual appeal”. The conventionalized character of the elements of the sub-framework: PLACE OF GROWTH – “grows on sands, waste grounds”, “grows in desolate places” influences the relatively well-developed structure of this section of the conceptual model of the word. The environmental features of the name justify, in turn, the following connotations: “penury”, “loneliness” and “abandonment”. Its locative characteristics also includes the image of the flower in which the connotations such as “heroic loneliness”, “perseverance despite the odds” come into the foreground.

In this paper I discuss weaknesses in the traditional LFG account of complex predicates and in the XLE implementation of the same. I argue that the concept of predicate composition in general, and the mechanisms required to achieve it, are problematic, but that the most problematic element is the concept of argument fusion. I show that a semantically-integrated account of complex predicate formation is possible within LFG+glue, an account which provides a simple and effective formalization of argument fusion, and which does not suffer from the weaknesses of traditional approaches.1

This work concerns the evolving pattern of the lexical richness of the corpus text of China Government Work Report measured by entropy, based on a fundamental assumption that these texts are linguistically homogeneous. The corpus is interpreted and studied as a dynamic system, the components of which maintain spontaneous variations, adjustment, self-organizations, and adaptations to fit into the semantic, discourse, and sociolinguistic functions that the text is set to perform. Both the macroscopic structural trend and the microscopic fluctuations of the time series of the interested entropic process are meticulously investigated from the dynamic complexity theoretical perspective. Rigorous nonlinear regression analysis is provided throughout the study for empirical justifications to the theoretical postulations. An overall concave model with modulated fluctuations incorporated is proposed and statistically tested to represent the key quantitative findings. Possible extensions of the current study are discussed.

Most geolocation applications for mobile devices assume a constant connection with the network and high computational power nodes. However, with ever-developing devices it now becomes possible to establish peer-to-peer networks in case when the network can be unreachable due to special circumstances (like conflicts or natural disasters). In this paper, a method for clustering spatial data in mobile environment is discussed. A simple solution based on OPTICS algorithm with lexical distance is proposed for grouping the observations.

The key problem in studies of marketing objects (e.g., brands, political parties) is the lack of agreement on the universal dimensions through which such objects are perceived, as well as on methodologies allowing their identification. As a result, researchers often use structural models (and instruments) that lack ecological validity. We offer a solution to that problem by presenting a methodology that draws on lexical research and which has allowed researchers to establish universal dimensions of personality perception in psychology. By discussing the theoretical and methodological tenets of the multilevel lexical approach to exploring images of marketing objects, we also overcome another problem of neglecting the hierarchical structure of the phenomena and data.

In the article, the author presents the semantics of the lexeme gruby. He draws attention to the stages and mechanisms of shaping secondary meanings of the word (presenting changes from the Old Polish period to the present day). The analyses are based on the methods commonly adopted in lexical semantics. A special place in the considerations is given to the meaning ‘an obese, overweight person.’ The observations also concern aesthetic evaluation in language (and, partly, ethical evaluation as well), and at the same time the topic is connected with the analysis of the exponents of lexical parameterisation.

The main goal of this article is a comparative analysis of non-basic hues of the red colour in Polish (25 lexemes) and in Italian (44 lexemes). The two languages correspondingly categorize only 14 lexemes. Sharp differences in the categorization result from the ways in which Polish and Italian linguists ascribe shades of colours to particular semantic fields, e.g. M. Grossmann lists the adjective rosa (pink) as a non-basic term of red in opposition to the Polish linguists I. Bjelajeva and R. Tokarski, who categorize that adjective as an archilexeme of the semantic field of the pink hue.

Opis:
This paper analyzed word recognition in two patterns of Chinese characters, cross referenced with word frequency. The patterns were defined as uni-part (semantic radical/component only) and bi-part (including the phonetic radical/component and the semantic radical/component) characters. The interactions of semantic and phonological access in both patterns were inspected. It was observed that in the naming task and the pronunciation-matching task, the subject performance involving the uni-part characters showed longer RT than the bi-part characters. However, with the lexical decision and meaning-matching tasks the uni-part characters showed shorter RT than the bi-part characters. It was also observed that the frequency, which is regarded as a lexical variable, displayed a strong influence. This suggests that Chinese characters require lexical access in all tasks. This study also suggested that the phonological process is primary in visual word recognition; as there is a significant phonological effect in processing the Chinese bi-part characters, resulting in either the facilitation or inhibition of phonology due to the differing demands of the two tasks

This study investigated the use of lexical elements of cohesion in the essay writing of students of English as a Second Language. Two hundred essays of final year students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were collated and analyzed by the researchers in order to identify the lexical elements used to achieve cohesion in writing. The result showed that students used three lexical elements as postulated by Gutwinski in varying degrees in their writings. These include: repetition, synonyms, and lexical sets (collocations). Students tended to use more of repetitions and made minimal use of synonyms and lexical sets to achieve cohesion in writing. This has led to poorly written essays by students. It also implies that lexical cohesion elements should be taught in schools to enable students use them appropriately in writing.

The aim of this study was to explore automaticity of lexical access and executive functions of language learners and bilinguals while considering their language automaticity. Three groups of youths aged 14 to 18 were tested: Croatian-German early bilinguals, Croatian high school students who participated in a German immersion programme at school and Croatian high school students of German as a foreign language. The participants were tested on a modified version of the Stroop test (i.e., a Stroop-like test). It presented pictures of an animal or an object with names of an animal or an object written over the picture. The names were written in Croatian or German and were either congruent or incongruent. Lexical access was slower for the bilinguals in both Croatian and German, which suggests that they used more of their cognitive resources because both of their languages were highly active, and more executive control was required to complete the task.

The article examines the disciplinary preferences of medical and psychology writers of research articles (RAs) in the use of epistemic lexical verbs (ELVs), regarding their frequency, prominence, distribution across the RA sections, and recurrent phraseology. The results show that disciplinary affiliation affects these phenomena, as more ELVs are found in psychology than in medicine. Both groups prefer speculative judgements and quotative evidence and most frequently use ELVs in Discussions. Yet, psychology authors are more balanced in their preferences and rely on a wider selection of frequent ELVs which are often combined with self-mention. Medical authors are more inclined towards deductive ELVs. Disciplinary differences are also observed in the choice of the specific ELVs, their frequency distributions and phraseology in the distinct RA sections.

The aim of the present research was to investigate the cognitive representations of the noetic perspective (spirituality) and the influence of the activation of these representations on information processing. The article presents the results of three experiments on groups of students (N = 186), using the lexical decision task (LDT) paradigm. In two of these experiments the depth of information processing was also measured by a memory test. The typical result for LDT procedure was not confirmed – the noetic perspective did not cause faster recognition of words related to this perspective. However, the activation of the noetic perspective in the condition of activated attention manifested itself in a better memory of noetic words and in the transfer of positive affect to related noetic objects.

A program for corpus analysis called (AntConc Tutorial (Ver. 3.2.4) developed by Laurence Anthony (Anthony, L., 2004) is used for analyzing the sample of this study which will be the speech of the Singaporean prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, on the COVID-19 ‘New Normal’, on 31 May 2021 (Appendix A). The study devotes attention to the speech of the Singaporean prime minister on this occasion due to the importance of this event which occupied the world. This paper depends on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) taxonomy of cohesive devices to analyze data.

I have discussed cognitive aspects of translation and I have attempted to pay a particular attention to cognitive conditions guaranteeing the correct process of translation. Translating from one language into the other is, in my opinion, possible thanks to the reference to the notional ground and information processing regardless of a language. The division of one mental lexicon common for the two languages into two separate mental lexicons influences the quality of translation. The condition of a successful translation is a correct identification of the notional structure and this, in turn, is possible only after the division of the mental lexicons so that the lexical units have a direct access to beyond language notion and can activate them.
