Opis:
The article is the attempt of illustration of the potential role of rumination as an individual factor in susceptibility of learned helplessness (LH). The hypothesis of the moderating role of rumination is based on the results of the researches on depression and the experimental researches on rumination. The description of these researches and conclusions derived from them are placed in the first part of the article. The second part is the analysis of potential mechanisms of the rumination impact on LH deficits. These different mechanisms leads to different predictions that are empirically verifiable.

Opis:
The present research explores the role of repetitive thought (RT) in developing control deprivation deficits. The two main RT theories lead to diverging predictions. The response style theory suggests that RT in reaction to distress leads to negative effects in terms of emotional and cognitive functioning. However, the theory of Marin and Tesser and its elaboration by Watkins, suggest that the effects of RT depend on its form and that individuals who are not depression-prone usually adopt the constructive form of RT that leads to positive effects. To test which of these predictions is true for control deprivation situation, two experimental studies were conducted. Participants after control deprivation were induced RT or distraction, followed by the measurement of their emotional and cognitive functioning. The results suggest that repetitive thought reduces both emotional and cognitive helplessness deficits and has no effect in no control deprivation condition. This supports the theory of Martin and Tesser and its elaboration by Watkins.

Opis:
The article focuses on the links between attributional style (regarded as personal trait) and succeeding, in the situation of previous failure. The attempts of research and describing these mechanisms derive from the researches of learned helplessness. To be precise from the Attributional Helplessness Model of Abramson, Seligman i Teasdale. The aim of this article is attempt to explain the lack of direct proofs between attributional styles and learned helpless arising whereas there are reliable proofs between particular attributional styles and succeeding. The article begins with survey of the most important conceptions of helplessness. Then some researches of links between succeeding and attributional styles were described. Finally the attempt of explaining the lack of direct proofs between attributional styles and learned helpless is proposed. This explanation is based on distinguishing between the situation when a lack of control is experienced (helplessness training) and the situation of experiencing single failure. The article ends with the proposal of the experiment which is planed to be a empirical verification hypothesis that individual attributional styles have relevant impact on the motivation and succeeding in the situation of previous failure.

Opis:
The article is the review of chosen researches and theories that relates to individual differences in susceptibility of learned helplessness (LH). In the first part of the article the specificity of the learned helplessness syndrome is outlined. Next the theories that are relevant when individual differences in susceptibility of LH are concerned, are presented. Then the researches related to the role of three individual differences: attributional style, Locus of Control and sex, in susceptibility of LH are presented and discussed. In the last part of the article there are some conclusions from the presented researches. Also some conclusions about the possible directions of the future researches to help to separate the reactions to single failure from the reactions to helplessness training.

Opis:
Learned helplessness is often studied as a consequence of repetitive failure in a performance domain and is usually associated with the experience of uncontrollability over future outcomes. The premise of this review article is first to establish initial support towards the notion of learned helplessness seen in the context of sports performance. Furthermore, the role of performance anxiety and maladaptive perfectionism will be introduced to strengthen the idea that thinking traits impact motor performance especially when these traits moderate the effects of consecutive failure experience. Finally the paper will focus on a typical profile of an athlete who would be susceptible to choking under pressure as an outcome of perceived uncontrollability and performance anxiety. Burnout and potential interventions will be discussed later.

Opis:
Objectives of the research: This article presents a diagnosis of the learned helplessness experienced by secondary-school students learning English remotely during the 2021 lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives are to (1) show the level of learned helplessness of secondary-school students learning English, (2) investigate the relationship between foreign language learning strategies and the learned helplessness of secondary-school students, and (3) determine the relationship between the level of learned helplessness and the use of private tutoring by secondary-school students. Research methods: The study was conducted via a written diagnostic survey. It also employed the School Helplessness Scale by B. Ciżkowicz (2009) and the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by R. Oxford (1990). A short description of the context of the issue: The aim of the text is to answer the following research questions: What is the level of learned helplessness of secondary-school students? Is there a relationship between foreign language learning strategies and the learned helplessness of secondary-school students? Does the use of private tutoring differentiate the level of learned helplessness of secondary-school students? Research findings: The results demonstrate a significant negative correlation between learned helplessness and the use of memory, cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. The average score of learned helplessness was 2.54, which indicates that the respondents usually felt the symptoms of it.  An analysis of the results for the three deficits revealed that the motivational deficit made the greatest contribution to learned helplessness. The students who had hired a private tutor in English had a lower level of learned helplessness and cognitive deficit. Conclusions and/or recommendations: The research findings lead to several recommendations for educational practice in the context of foreign language learning: using new, effective pedagogical approaches to keep learners motivated—including elements of strategy training or social and emotional learning (SEL)—arranging remedial teaching, and promoting teachers’ professional development.

Opis:
The aim of our study was to define predictors of instrumental motivation for mathematics. In our research, we used the data on the Polish sample of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) from 2012. We hypothesized that motivation to engage in mathematics at later stages of education and in professional career, called “instrumental motivation” in the project, can be predicted based on gender, mathematics self-concept, intrin- sic motivation, as well as worries about coping with mathematics and negative emotions. Using structural equation modelling, with gender and mathematics self-concept as predictors, and negative emotions, intrinsic motivation and worries about one’s math skills as mediators, we showed that helplessness in mathematics, indirectly determined by gender and mathematics self-concept, has an indirect effect on instrumental motivation, only through higher worries about one’s math abilities. Instrumental motivation turned out to be also strongly related to intrinsic motivation, which in turn is linked to a positive mathematics self-concept

Unemployment is a severe social phenomenon that concerns, or may concern, a considerable number of people. Having in mind the necessity to overcome it, attention should be paid to the need for the pedagogues to be engaged in developing activity and creativity in their pupils, in overcoming their helplessness. Actions promoting the value of the person, that are the basis of personalistic education, are a way to solve this issue.

The intent of the present study is to investigate the relationship between language learning strategies and learned helplessness. For this purpose, a questionnaire was administered to 371 secondary school students (first, second and third-graders) learning English in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The results of this study showed there was a moderate, negative significant relationship between indirect strategies and learned helplessness and a slightly weaker, but still moderate, significant relationship between direct strategies and learned helplessness.
