Opis:
Mangroves are a crucial ecosystem in coastal areas and serve a significant ecological function. However, this ecosystem is under the continuous pressure of anthropogenic activities which create toxic contaminants, such as heavy metals. The presence of marine ports and electric steam power plants next to Bee Jay Bakau Resort (BJBR) Mangrove Forest may worsen the heavy metal pollution, especially in the case of non-essential metals like lead (Pb). The vegetation in mangrove ecosystems can help store and trap this contaminant. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the potency of the Avicennia alba and Rhizopora mucronata mangrove species, which dominate the mangrove vegetation in BJBR Mangrove Forest, as Pb phytoremediation agents. The samples were taken from the sediment, roots, stems, and leaves of the mangrove trees. The results showed that the Pb found in the sediment of these species ranged from 10.323 to 11.071 ppm, while the Pb concentration in the mangrove parts was less than 1 ppm with the order roots > stems > leaves. Furthermore, the statistical analysis indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the Pb values across sites and species. Moreover, the BCF, BAC, and TF in this study were less than 1, making the observed mangrove species unsuitable for phytoextraction or phytostabilization.

Opis:
The research objectives are: 1) to analyze several parameters of the aquatic environment that affect the lead accumulation in shellfish body (Anadara granosa (Linnaeus, 1758)) at eastern coastal waters of Muara Gembong sub-district by using multiple regression analysis, 2) to reduce the variables through principal component analysis to reduce the research cost for monitoring of lead pollution in the next time, and 3) to analyze the location which has similar characteristics of lead accumulation by using hierarchical cluster analysis. Based on the multiple regression analysis, the lead concentration in water, lead concentration in sediment, and sulfur concentration in sediment has a very significant correlation (P < 0.01) to the lead accumulation in shellfish body. In contrast, COD of waters has a significant correlation (P < 0.05), which correlation coefficient (R) is 0.97. Through the principal component analysis, the lead concentration in sediment, COD of waters, and sulfur concentration in sediment gives the most variance contribution to the total data variance. Therefore, those variables are sufficiently used to monitor lead pollution on shellfish at the Muara Gembong sub-district's coastal waters. Cluster analysis shows that the location is agglomerated to be 3 clusters, which coastal water of Southern Bahagia Beach and Western Mekar Beach has highly similar lead accumulation characteristics.

Opis:
Objectives Lead (Pb) pollution is a serious public health problem all over the world, it especially plays severe damage role in children’s health. Apart from reducing lead-induced damages, the decrease of lead accumulation is also critical. This study has been the first attempt to investigate effects of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), potassium iodide (KI) and chlorophyll (Chl) on lead accumulation in male mice. Material and Methods Eighty healthy Kunming male mice were selected and divided randomly into 8 groups. They were treated with lead acetate (PbAc) intraperitoneally, individually and in combination with the DMSA, KI or Chl once daily for 5 days. Meanwhile, the control group was treated with normal saline during the whole exposure period. On 30th day, mice were sacrificed and lead concentrations were detected in the whole blood, livers, kidneys, and testicles of mice by means of the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Results In comparison with the control group, lead concentrations increased in mice treated with the PbAc and DMSA, KI and Chl diminished lead accumulation in the whole blood, livers, and kidneys. Chl had specifically the same effects on lead concentrations in the testicles of male mice. Conclusions Potassium iodide and Chl, as food additives, had the same effects as the DMSA to reduce lead accumulation in male mice effectively. Our results provided experimental evidence in vivo for the preventive measures of lead poisoning. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(1):87–93

Opis:
Due to the rapid pace of urbanization, the lead-zinc slags previously located outside the settlement turned out to be within the city of Shymkent and began to pose a serious threat to the environment. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of lead-zinc slags on the environment of Shymkent. It has been revealed that the fields of ruderal plant species are inversely correlated with the lead content in the soil, for phyto-indication of the state of soils, the most informative indicators are the phytocenotic composition and the projective covering of soils with vegetation. At the same time, the proportion of annual species in the control is 53.5 ± 5.6%; with an increase in the toxic load, their role gradually weakens, reaching from 14496.0 ± 105.1 mg/kg Pb2+ to 5.2 ± 0.4%. It was found that Dodartia orientalis, Centaurea squarrosa Willd., Plantago lancetofolium are hyperaccumulators of lead ions, while electron microscopic images showed that lead ions accumulate in the intercellular space of plants, forming significant conglomerates of 10–75 nm. The negative influence of lead-zinc waste has been established, which leads to the accumulation of lead in the blood of children and, as a consequence, is the cause of various diseases. The maximum lead content in the amount of 103 micrograms / dl was found in the blood of children in the area of the city, located 800–1000 m from the slag storage site. Developing hypochromic anemia in children indicates its toxic origin. It was revealed that 90% of children have such pathologies as biliary dyskinesia, dental caries, small anomalies of heart development.

Recent sediment accumulation rates in Adventfjorden (Svalbard), a small subpolar fjord, were determined by 210Pb and 137Cs dating. Modern rates in the central basin decrease downfjord from 1.87 to 0.87 cm y−1 (2.6 to 1.19 g cm−2 y−1). Comparison of the modern values (1986–2001) with older ones (1963–86) reveals a marked increase in sediment accumulation rates in the last ten years. This correlates well with recent climate changes (warming and increase in precipitation). Comparison with particulate matter flux data indicates that a portion of the sediment is passed on to Isfjorden.

Heavy metals are some of the environmental pollutants that have a serious impact on the environment. The analysis of hydromacrophytes growing in small rivers of the south of Kazakhstan with different contents of heavy metal salts revealed that the morphometric indicators of the same plant species differ significantly, depending on the level of total mineralization of the aquatic environment in different rivers of the Turkestan region. It has been established that two plant species can be used to bioindicate the content of lead ions in the aquatic environment: Azolla caroliniana Willd. and Veronica beccabunga L., which must be introduced into the tested aqueous solutions in the amount of 1.0 kg/m3 and 1.5–2.0 kg/m3, respectively, to fully cover the water column at different depths. The first morphological changes in plants, in the form of destruction of the structure of chloroplasts along the edges of unfolded leaves in A. caroliniana Willd. and slight withering of the lower underwater leaves in V. beccabunga L., occur already at a 1.5 mg/l Pb2+ content in water, and a further increase in the content of lead ions in water to 600.0–800.0 mg/l leads to the death of plants.

Opis:
Agricultural soils that have been irrigated with the contaminated water from metallurgical mining activities for more than 70 years constitute an environmental problem as well as a concern for food security and human health. The presence of lead in the soil and cultivated pastures is highly dangerous, due to its toxicity, persistence and accumulation in plants and animals (cattle). This element enters the trophic chain of humans due to the intake of meat, milk and its derivatives. The concentration of lead was determined in the soil and the cultivated pastures with Lolium x hybridum Hausskn and Medicago sativa L. The soil and pastures samples collected from plots irrigated with river water contaminated with heavy metals at a depth of 0-20 cm. The content of Pb determined by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed the lead concentrations in soil in the range of environmental quality standards for soils according to Peruvian regulations. In the soil with L. x hybridum and M. sativa the average content of lead was 57.17 ± 6.29 mg.kg-1 and 57.19 ± 8.99 mg.kg-1; in the above-ground tissues were 1.17 ± 0.69 mg.kg-1 and 1.62 ± 0.68 mg.kg-1, respectively. In addition, no significant differences were observed in the Pb content in the soil and plant tissues. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) in the above-ground tissues of L. x hybridum and M. sativa was less than one and they were not significant. Therefore, irrigation with long-term contaminated water is not a concern for the farmers in the Mantaro Valley.

A model for estimating the precipitation of Cd-, Pb- and As-sulphide in soils at various pH is presented. pH influences not only the solubility of heavy metal-sulphides but also on the distribution of the S atom among sulphide (S²⁻, SH⁻, H₂S) and sulphate (SO₄²⁻) species by the redox potential of the soil solution. The model, based on the Nerst-equation. considers the equilibrium of protolitic processes and complex ion formation. In order to test the model, a long term field experiment polluted with different levels of toxic heavy metals on Hungarian typical soils was performed. Coarse textured soils were treated with Cd. Pb and As salts at pH = 6.8 and 8 and after 6 months and 2 years the heavy metal precipitation was investigated. The Pb ion precipitated at pH = 8.0 and pH = 6.2 while Cd ion at pH = 8. The As ion did not show precipitation effect in any soil according to the majority of arsenate ions at the actual redox potential. Although the solubility of CdS (pK = 26.1) and PbS (pk = 26.6) is similar, the Cd concentration in the solution was higher than that of Pb. The difference between the two ion concentrations is interpreted by the stronger Pb ion adsorption to organic and inorganic soil constituents. It indicated that the adsorbed and complex ion should be considered for the prediction of precipitation.

The objective of this research was to examine the influence of Cd (0, 10, 20, 40 mg Cd·dm⁻³) and Pb (0, 10, 100, 200 mg Pb·dm⁻³) in growing substrate and mycorrhizal colonization of root system on growth, flowering, Cd and Pb accumulation in scarlet sage shoots. Both Cd and Pb had a negative effect on mycorrhizal colonization of scarlet sage roots. The effect of Cd and Pb on the growth of scarlet sage was negligible. Cd at 40 mg·dm⁻³ lowered the number of inflorescences and caused slight chlorosis of the lowermost leaves. Pb at 200 mg·dm⁻³ caused drying of the lowermost leaves. Both heavy metals accelerated flowering of non-mycorrhizal plants, independently of the concentration in growing media. Cd and Pb contents in scarlet sage shoots increased with the increasing content of these heavy metals in growing substrate in both non-mycorrhizal and mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhization decreased the growth of scarlet sage and increased the accumulation of Cd and Pb in shoots of plants grown in media strongly polluted with heavy metals.
Cd w stężeniu 40 mg·dm⁻³ obniżał liczbę kwiatostanów i powodował lekką chlorozę liści dolnych, a Pb w stężeniu 200 mg·dm⁻³ zasychanie liści dolnych.
