Opis:
Leaving one’s homeland comes as a shock for an emigrant and his family. It is even more difficult when they decide to settle down in a country as far away from Poland as Australia is. Its exotic character, so different from European li festyle conventions, can cause difficulties in adapting to the new culture and make the whole process last longer. Language and culture – the two elements closely connected with emigration a re discussed in the article. On the one hand there is a need to preserve one’s own values, on the other, however at the same time, one must adapt to new values to avoid isolation.

The purpose of this paper is to establish the linguistic and cultural similarities and peculiarities of the Russian concept of pie and the Bulgarian concept of banica. The similarities and differences of the concepts are assessed by factual plan and by mapping the cultural component of spiritual value as the basis of formation and development of models of attitude and moral values encoded in the semantics of the concept.
Целью статьи является установление лингвокультурного сходства и своеобразия русского концепта пирог и болгарского концепта баница. Сходство и различие концептов оценивается на уровне фактуального плана и путем сопоставления культурной составляющей как духовной ценностной основы формирования и развития моделей мировосприятия и нравственных ориентиров, кодируемых в семантике концепта.

This essay showcases the results of a survey conducted on a sample of Italian speakers which focused on their perception of languages. The research, carried out in the second half of 2019, has enabled corroborating the initial hypothesis about the existence of preconceptions and stereotypes associated with the perception of foreign languages and cultures (Elman & McClelland 1986) by Italian people. In particular, a questionnaire was used to clarify which adjectives are commonly associated with selected foreign languages, in order to identify certain trends and stereotypes. The survey is based on ethnolinguistic and language education studies (Cardona 2006), and was performed through data collection techniques used in ethnography and sociolinguistics (Tagliamonte 2006).

Autor skupił się przede wszystkim na informacjach odnoszących się do języka i kultury białoruskiej, które jego zdaniem mogą zainteresować slawistów, umożliwiając im jednocześnie zapoznanie się z nowatorską koncepcją samego Hipersłownika.
This article concerns a particular kind of entries in the publication, at present in preparation consisting of about 1800 original articles, of the lexicographical work – The Hyperdictionary of the Polish Language. The author is primarily concerned with information referring to Belarusian language and culture, which, in his opinion, will be of interest to Slavonicists, while simultaneuosly enabling them to experience the novel concept of the Hyperdictionary.

Opis:
Ontological concepts, associated with objects of the surrounding reality, appear as a basis in the conceptual model of the world. The special place among them is occupied by zoo concepts as primary cognitive structures, which represent fragments of the real world. Despite considerable interest in phraseology with zoo component and zoo concepts the zoomorphic model is still in the shadow. This paper is devoted to examining zoomorphic mythological model as a cognitive mechanism in language conceptualization of reality and of functioning of the simulated knowledge in modern linguistic and cultural situation. The research is based on the concept cock on the material of Russian phraseology and metaphorology as a language reflection of the activity of cognitive models in the aspect of creating new meanings.
В концептуальной модели мира онтологические концепты, связанные с объектами окружающей реальности, представляются неким базисом. Среди них особое место занимают зооконцепты как первичные когнитивные структуры представления фрагментов действительного мира. Несмотря на значительный интерес к фразеологии с зоокомпонентом, а в последнее время – и к зооконцептам, зооморфная модель все еще остается в тени. Целью данной статьи является рассмотрение зооморфной мифологической модели как когнитивного механизма в языковой концептуализации окружающей действительности и особенности функционирования моделируемого знания в условиях современной лингвокультурной ситуации. Исследование осуществляется на примере концепта петух на материале русской фразеологии и метафорологии как языкового отображения действия когнитивных моделей в аспекте формирования новых смыслов.

The author of the paper shows how one may reflect on the essence of human rights, through the lens of reporters’ stories, including in particular Ben Rawlence’s book City of Thorns: Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refugee Camp. The paper encourages one to listen to the voice of refugees and to develop an in-terest in their lives in order to understand how they define their rights, what they derive them from, and how they judge their observance by the interna-tional community. In fact, these deliberations are connected with a problem which is important for contemporary education, namely how to shape a genu-inely humanistic attitude among young Poles towards people from different cultures, who are additionally forced to leave their homes.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the perspectives of the functional stylistics. Functional-stylistic approach is based on the idea of the socio-cultural determinants of the functional styles. Each functional style represents a distinct fragment of social reality (social context, by P. Sztompka, or functional system, by M. Fleischer) and stylistic studies are connected with intercultural linguistics. The natural consequence of this theoretical assumption is a need for two-level social stratification of language varieties: category of the functional style and the culturally marked substyles. Linguistic study of substyles (as well as study of the culturally marked varieties and discourses) should be an essential part of the functional stylistics. The intercultural linguistics contributes to the development of the knowledge about the mutual conditioning of language and culture.

Artykuł jest próbą wykazania zróżnicowanej dynamiki rozwoju terytorialnego reformacji w Księstwie Szczecińskim od jej narodzin do przełomu XVI–XVII wieku. Teza o wolniejszym tempie przebudowy stosunków kościelnych oraz wyznaniowych na wschód od Góry Chełmskiej nie jest nowa, novum stanowi natomiast ukazanie skali opóźnienia, jego genezy i uwarunkowań, wśród których ważne były odmienności etniczno-językowe, społeczno-ekonomiczne oraz stosunek władzy książęcej i nowego Kościoła do ewangelickiej ludności kaszubskiej, w praktyce prowadzący do jej dyskryminacji.
The paper is an attempt to demonstrate the diversified dynamics of territorial development of the Reformation in the Szczecin Duchy (German: das Herzogtum Pommern-Stettin) from its beginning to the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The thesis of a slower pace of the transformation of the ecclesiastical and religious relations east of Góra Chełmska (German: Gollenberg) is not new; the novelty consists in demonstrating the scale of the delay, its genesis and conditions, among which the things that should be emphasised are the ethnic and language differences on the one hand and on the other the socio-economic differences, and the attitude of the Ducal authorities and the new Church towards evangelisation of the Kashubian population, which in practice was reduced to its discrimination.

This article focuses on the relationship between Yanka Bryl and Poland, showing the influence of Polish classics on his literary legacy. Stories such as Orphan’s Bread by Yanka Bryl, Orphan’s Plight by Bolesław Prus and the novel Sisyphean Labours by Stefan Żeromski were subjected to comparative analysis. Prus concentrated on the fate of the orphan and his unequal struggle for a better tomorrow. Żeromski showed the image of the school in the Russian Congress Kingdom of Poland and the struggle of young people against Russification. J. Bryl, in his story, raised the topics of the orphanage and the struggle for linguistic, cultural and national identity.

The paper addresses the issue of refugees in the broad sense of the term, i.e. people forced to leave their homes and seek conditions for a normal life due to climate change and to the excessive environment footprint left by humans. The numerous reasons for this type of displacement include drought, the grow-ing scarcity of natural resources in seas and oceans, and the unfair distribution of water. These three climate plagues are analysed on the basis of non¬ fiction literature – Wykluczeni [The Excluded], which is a book of reportage by Artur Domosławski, Ben Rawlence’s City of Thorns. Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refu-gee Camp, and Stefano Liberti’s South of Lampedusa. In the public consciousness, migrations motivated by climate change and human interference in the ecosys-tem have been functioning since recently, but they will actually become the greatest challenge of our day and age. This is why the important role played by humanities is to speak about them, to comment on their performative power, to debate on potential solutions, and to trigger warning discourses leading to the development of a habit of imagining “scenarios for the future”. Acts of imagi-nation provide the possibility to shape the world in an unlimited way and to play out in a virtual manner some key social, cultural and political situations, in order to live well on an overcrowded planet, where water, land and food may be lacking a few decades from now.

The paper tries to answer the question of how the conception of “water” is understood by the Hausa people living mainly in Nigeria and Niger. The main aim of the paper is to develop a cultural schema of water based on everyday contact with this liquid in the household and in the natural environment. The analysis is based on the methodology of cultural linguistics (Sharifian 2017) which examines the relationship between language and cultural conceptualizations. The first part of the article is devoted to every-day use of water. The second part deals with ritual cleansing and healing. The third part describes natural and artificial water reservoirs. Particular attention has been paid to terms co-occuring with the Hausa word ruwa meaning ‘water’, i.e. names of vessels, containers, tanks, and reservoirs as well as people and creatures related to water, such as water carriers, masters of water and supernatural beings inhabiting rivers and lakes.

Opis:
This study explores the most preferred and effective teaching methods for Korean language and culture for university students. Statistical analysis of awareness of the Korean language, history, and culture was conducted. It tested differences in students’ knowledge about Korea dependently on a teaching method and sociodemographic variables. The study investigated is there a dependency between favourite teaching methods of K-culture and analogical methods using K-pop, K-drama, and K-food. The main research tool was the survey conducted among 70 students studying Korean language and culture at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The study’s statistical analyses employed the IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 package, used for analysing basic descriptive statistics, r Pearson and rho Spearman correlation analyses, and t Student test for independent variables. The analysis proves that the students do not differ in terms of knowledge about Korea in relation to a preferred and effective teaching method.
