Opis:
Problems of the retention capacity of the landscape and related runoff conditions are at present, at the time of the occurrence of frequent storm floods, a topical problem. Our research was aimed at the evaluation of effects of physical-geographical factors on hydrological conditions of the Fryšávka River drainage area occurring in the southern part of the Žďárské vrchy CHKO (Žďárské Hills Protected Landscape Area) depending on the current position of the landscape cover. Preparation and analyses of source data were carried out in ArcGIS 9.2 in the ArcView software product by means of the set of integrated software applications ArcMap, ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox. To determine hydrological conditions at the absence of hydrometric observations a method was used of numbers of runoff curves CN in a modification of the DesQ-MAXQ deterministic episode model. Based on hydrological characteristics, potential retention was monitored as well as the volume of flood wave, concentration time and peak discharge. Hydrological modelling was carried out on a design storm precipitation with the return period of 100 years. The significance of physical-geographical factors affecting the landscape retention capacity and runoff conditions was quantified by the statistical method of multiple regression and correlation analysis on the set of 95 partial drainage areas of the studied region. The analyses were carried out using the UNISTAT system. The method makes possible to select independent variables by gradual steps from most important down to least important. Finally, using the step linear regression, a certain number of independent variables was selected mostly affecting the size of a respective dependent variable together with the quantification of their operation through regression coefficients. Results achieved could be used at the implementation of preventive measures resulting in increasing the retention capacity of partial drainage areas, which served for the registration of major runoffs from a unit area.

The key objective of the study is to analyse structural characteristics of the landscape from the viewpoint of the structure’s durability, characteristics and speed of change. The research focused on the area surrounding Płock. In the analysed period (1987-2010) slight changes were detected with regard to the land cover, though they were significant in terms of the natural environment. No single dominant process determining land cover change was identified. Fluctuations prevailed (producing a slightly different picture in each microregion), with a fixed pattern maintained. Distribution, shape and spatial location of land cover types are only partly determined by land lie and habitat quality. Fragmentation of the terrain is relatively high, which reflects intense land use, at the same time indicating opportunities to preserve the wildlife and vegetation typical for agrocenoses.

The aim of this research was to present the land cover structure and landscape diversity in the West Polesie Biosphere Reserve. The land cover classification was performed using Object Based Image Analysis in Trimble eCognition Developer 8 software. The retrospective land cover changes analysis in 3 lake catchments (Kleszczów, Moszne, Białe Włodawskie Lakes)was performed on the basis of archival aerial photos taken in 1952, 1971, 1984, 1992, 2007 and one satellite scene from 2003 (IKONOS).On the basis of land cover map structure, Shannon diversity index was estimated with the moving window approach enabled in Fragstats software. The conducted research has shown that the land cover structure of the West Polesie Biosphere Reserve is diverse and can be simply described by selected landscape metrics. The highest level of land cover diversity, as showed by Shannon Diversity Index, was identified in the western part of the West Polesie Biosphere Reserve, which is closely related to the agricultural character of land cover structure in those regions. The examples of three regional retrospective land cover analyses demonstrated that the character of land cover structure has changed dramatically over the last 40 years.

Knowledge of a land cover is very essential to understand and know relations between a man and an environment. The land cover is closely related to the rest elements of geographic environment. It also illustrates the variety of the structure of geographic environment. Till the end of the last century, there were no data representing full, reliable and covering the whole country information about the land cover. Maps and studies over this element of landscape were based on other methods of mappings, various scales and spatial ranges. This fact made it impossible to make comparison analysis and to have proper conclusions concerning processes that were taking place. The realization of National Geographic Information Systems (NSIG) and works connected with the creation of CORINE Land Cover (CLC) is a big help in this field. It was impossible without the development of spatial imagery, universality of the application of spatial information systems, and the use of army materials in the civilian, formal cases. Source spatial data used on the paper, mutually supplement and cover one another. Research connected with the analysis of a landscape structure was done in the chosen protected areas in Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. All (8) landscape parks were in the Voivodeship. Total area of the preserved territories is almost 12% of the total Voivodeship area, and represent various types of a natural landscape. The structure of the landscape in landscape parks was analyzed with the application of landscape indices. The following indices describing the structure of landscape were calculated and compared: a number of land cover classes, a number of patches, total length of the edge, a shape index, a fractal dimension, and Shannon’s diversity index. Comparisons of indices among parks were done in relation to various scales of source materials.

The calamity windstorm in November 2004 caused dramatic changes of land cover in the Tatra Mountains. The bora have destroyed then more than 12,000 ha of forest and principally affected the habitat structure in the Tatra National Park. The aim of this contribution is to quantify changes in forest fragmentation in 2000 and 2006. We present forest fragmentation maps related to the years 2000 and 2006. The CORINE Land Cover data layers CLC 2000 and CLC 2006 converted to raster format were used as the input data in the process of forest fragmentation assessment. Forest pixels were classified according to fragmentation indices measured within the surrounding landscape as the forest core, forest patch, forest edge, and perforated forest. Decrease of the compact forest areas (forest core) by about 9% was recorded. On the other side, increased percentage of disrupted forest areas was observed. Decrease of the area of the CLC forest classes (classes 311, 312 and 313) on land cover maps from 2000 and 2006 was connected with an increased number of transitional woodland/shrubs polygons (CLC class 324). These results suggest a temporary fragmentation with possible forest regeneration. On the other hand, forest destruction in the National Park facilitated the development of travel and tourism (new hotels, ski parks, etc.). An increased number of construction sites (CLC class 133) indicate that an urban sprawl associated with a permanent forest fragmentation can be also expected in the future.

The main purpose of this work was to assess changes to the forest areas in Promno Landscape Park which occurred in 1830–2013. The assessment of these changes was based on an analysis of cartographic material from 1830, 1890, 1940 and 2013. The article presents the natural and socio-economic conditions in the research area. Analyses of dominant habitats and stands have also been presented together with cartographic material and a detailed analysis and evaluation of the changes over nearly 180 years. Based on the strategic documents and research results, a forecast has also been provided of the changes to be expected in the next dozen or so years. An analysis of changes to the forest areas in Promno Landscape Park has shown that the largest decrease in forest cover occurred in the second half of the 19th century in connection with clear-cut clearings. In 1890, the forest area decreased by 268 ha against 1830. Slight changes took place in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. In that period, slow afforestation followed logging and therefore the forest area increased from 1,592.3 hectares in 1890 to 1,679 hectares in 1940. Undoubtedly, the largest increase occurred after 1940, after the Second World War when land of poor agricultural value was afforested. The area of forests grew from 1,679 ha in 1940 to 2,545.29 ha in 2013 marking an increase in forest cover from less than 50% to the existing 76%.

Opis:
Wyraźnie zmalała wówczas powierzchnia zieleni wysokiej i użytków zielonych. Wokół Oleśnicy nie zaobserwowano gwałtownych zmian w żadnym z badanych przedziałów czasowych, poza znacznym wzrostem powierzchni zabudowy miejskiej w pierwszej połowie XX w. We wszystkich badanych miastach na przełomie XX i XXI w. nastąpił duży wzrost powierzchni zabudowy miejskiej, infrastruktury i przemysłu, głównie kosztem powierzchni zieleni wysokiej oraz użytków zielonych.
The aim of this study is the presentation of land cover changes around selected post-fortress cities located in Lower Silesia. The study is based on the historical and contemporary areas with the use of GIS. The area of the study includes the cities of Nysa and Świdnica, which have modern fortifications, and Oleśnica, a city which HAS never had this type of fortification. The study allowed the impact of modern fortifications on the type of land cover of surrounding areas and their changes, during over 250 years, to be determined. The study shows that the biggest changes in land use in all of the cities selected were connected with the liquidation of fortresses, and these were concerned mainly with the increase of urban areas, industrial areas, and transport areas. We can observe a decrease in forestry and grasslands. Around Oleśnica, we did not notice many changes, besides the increase of urban areas in the first half of the twentieth century. All cities at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries saw a large increase in urban development, infrastructure, and industry, mainly at the expense of forestry and grasslands.

Historical and archival sources are of cardinal importance in landscape research addressing the processes and course of landscape changes in European regions. The Franziscean cadastre from the 19th century is among the most widely used historical sources in Central Europe. We identified 1440 records, finally providing 104 articles reporting the use of the Franziscean cadastre for in-depth analyses in order to identify (i) the practice of the cadastral data processing, (ii) purpose and spatial extent of the study, (iii) use of complementary sources and (iv) particular land use/land cover classes under study. We have found the increasing attention towards the Franziscean cadastre as a source for landscape research reflected by the doubling number of records in the past decade with majority of the case studies located in Czechia (79), followed by Austria (9) and Italy (3). We have identified the trends in the use in landscape trajectory research and application to hydrology, agriculture and forestry. As regards the data processing, several  issues connected with the methodology or design of the records were found (e.g. geographic information system processing description and data source specification). We further problematize the suitability of the supplementary data used and conclude our review with a set of recommendations to contribute to the discussion on the methodology of landscape reconstruction with historical datasets.

The international community affirms the critical role of forests in climate change mitigation, which includes reducing emissions from degradation and deforestation, carbon stock conservation, sustainable forest management, and increasing carbon stocks in developing countries. It relates to land use and land cover changes. This study aims to review land use and land cover changes (LULC) in two decades, namely 2000-2010 and 2010-2020, and the impact on carbon stocks. Landsat satellite imagery in 2000, 2010, and 2020 are classified into six categories: built-up area, cropland, forest, water body, bareland, and grassland. This classification uses supervised classification. The accuracy kappa coefficient values obtained for the LULC 2000, LULC 2010, and LULC 2020 maps were 89.61%, 83.90%, and 87.10%, respectively. The most dominant systematic LULC change processes were forest degradation in 2000-2020; the transition of forest to cropland (349.20 ha), forest to bareland (171.19 ha), and forest to built-up area (661.68 ha). Loss of using the forest for other uses was followed by a decrease in carbon stock. There was a high decrease in carbon stock in the forest category (11,000 Mg C∙y-1). The results showed a significant change in land use and cover. The decline in the area occurred in the forest category, which decreased from year to year. Meanwhile, the built-up area increases every year. Carbon stocks also decrease from year to year, especially forests as the most significant carbon store, decreasing in the area.

Opis:
The rural landscape in Poland has been changing for the past several dozen years. The changes are visible in the land use and land cover. Technological progress, changes in people’s outlook and a low profitability of agriculture resulted in transformations of rural landscapes, especially in the areas of high level of land fragmentation, as it is the case in the south part of Poland. These changes are accompanied by growing awareness of environmental or cultural landscape protection related issues. Recent years have also brought new forms of environmental protection, for example the programme Natura 2000, being the result of agreements with European Union. The network of Natura 2000 cover the areas of special protection of birds, habitats, and according to the Act on Nature Conservation – areas of special interest for the Community. The goal of this form of protection is a preservation of valuable or engendered elements of biodiversity. The question arises then whether in the era of landscape transformations and changes of land cover qualifying a particular area as part of Natura 2000 network has any influence on the way of land use. The aim of the article is an analysis and evaluation of land cover changes, also in the areas covered by Natura 2000 programme, within the piedmont commune of Nowy Targ in Małopolskie Voivodeship. Moreover, a thesis is proposed that submontane lands, specifically used, due to large terrain height differences, are faced with less intense urbanization pressures and land transformations. Is it also the case of the Nowy Targ commune, covered in more than 22% by the Natura 2000 areas?

Celem artykułu jest analiza zmian struktury krajobrazów po 1989 roku wybranych gmin powiatu chełmskiego w województwie lubelskim – gminy miejskiej Rejowiec Fabryczny oraz dwóch gmin miejsko-wiejskich: Rejowiec i Siedliszcze. Strukturę krajobrazu zbadano na podstawie danych o pokryciu terenu pochodzących z bazy danych CORINE Land Cover. Wykorzystując narzędzia GIS przeanalizowano zmiany w strukturze krajobrazu z zastosowaniem metryk krajobrazowych. Ponadto podjęto próbę rozpoznania znaczenia przynależności do sieci Cittaslow w kontekście zmian krajobrazowych.
The objective of the article is to analyse changes in landscape structure after 1989 in selected communes of the Chełm county in the Lublin Voivodeship, namely the urban commune of Rejowiec Fabryczny, and two urban-rural communes Rejowiec and Siedliszcze. The landscape structure was analysed based on data on land cover from the CORINE Land Cover data base. GIS tools were used for the analysis of landscape structure transformations with the application of landscape metrics. Moreover, an attempt was made to examine the affiliation to the Cittaslow network in the context of landscape transformations. The study showed that changes in land cover are not only related to the sprawl of building development, but also to an increase in the area of agricultural land outside the range of irrigation facilities, and an increase in the mean surface area of such land. A decline in land cover transformations has also been observed since 2012, as confirmed by the landscape structure diversity index. It may be related to the membership in the European Union (among others Common Agricultural Policy). The study showed no effect of affiliation with the Cittaslow network on landscape transformations. A continuation of the proposed analyses is required in a broader time perspective and in a specific spatial range.

Urbanization directly affects the existing infrastructure, landscape modification, environmental contamination and traffic pollution especially if there is lack of urban planning. Recently, the rapid urban sprawl has resulted in less developed green areas and has devastating environmental consequences. This study was aimed to study the past urban expansion rates and Measure LST from satellite data. The Land use land cover (LULC) maps of years 1996, 2010, 2013, and 2017 were generated using Landsat satellite images. Four main classes i.e. water, urban, bare land and vegetation were identified using unsupervised classification with iterative self-organizing data analysis (isodata) technique. The LST from satellite thermal data can be derived from different procedures:atmospheric, radiometric calibrations and surface emissivity corrections, classification of spatial changeability in land-cover. Different methods and formulas were used in the algorithm that successfully retrieves the land surface temperature to help us study the thermal environment of the ground surface. To verify the algorithm, the land surface temperature and the near-air temperature were compared. The results showed that, From 1996-2017 urban areas increased to about considerable increase of about 48%.few areas of city also shown in reduction in LST from year 1996-2017that actually began their transitional phase from rural to urban LULC.Mean temperature of city increased averagely about 1ºC each year in the month of October. The green and vegetative areas witnessed a decrease in area while higher number of pixels increased in urban class.

The contribution deals with scientific interpretation of visual characteristics of the landscape, which was not very discussed theme until today. Our study concerns the landscape of the High Tatra Mountains. Emphasis is put on anthropogenically influenced settlement areas, with markedly displayed objects of travel movement with downhill courses. We assess visual characteristics of the landscape as landform configuration and land-cover structure composition, in order to express basic visual characteristics of the studied area. Research works in the field were important element of our research, being followed by a phase of data processing. We selected one of exposed localities with high anthropogenic influence in the High Tatras. It is a locality situated between settlement of Tatranská Lomnica and slopes below and above the Skalnaté pleso Lake. We identified visual fields (visual sectors and zones), from where are characteristic views on the mountains. We visualised landforms in their context to geological structure in a 3D model. The results obtained in this case study may be applied as a basis for environmental impact assessment (EIA) and can lead to eventual propositions of new design of downhill courses in visual exposed areas.

Opis:
The contemporary structure of the spatial landscape is the result of all activities and processes which took place in the analysed area in the past. Almost every activity of man is reflected in the landscape pattern in the creation of various forms of land use. In this paper, the variation of the landscape pattern of the Zabory Landscape Park is analyzed on three sample plots. The forest economy has been taking place with different activity on each of these sample plots for the previous 210 years. The landscape pattern changes as a result of technological changes were analyzed on the basis of cartographical, topographical maps and remote sensing data from 1796-2000. Six time states were analyzed on the basis of the interpretation of topographical maps, six states on the basis of interpretation of forest review maps of tree stands and aerial photographs, and seven states on the basis of interpretation of satellite imageries. The following source materials are used in the paper: Schrötter-Engelhardt maps (1796-1802), Prussian topographic maps – Messtischblätter (1874), WIG topographic maps (1936), topographic maps in scheme 1942 (1954) and topographic maps in scheme 1965 (1985) and maps revising treestands from: 1911, 1945, 1952-54, 1966, 1976, 1987-88, 1999-2000. To complement revising the maps of treestands panchromatic and colour aerial photographs from 1951, 1964, 1975, 1986 and 1997 were also used. To characterize changes in the landscape structure, the chosen indices of landscape spatial pattern were calculated. The following landscape indices were used: patch density and size metrics, edge metrics, shape metrics (within a fractal dimension and NSCP index), diversity metrics and fragmentation of basic subsections. Calculations were made on the level of a landscape as well as separate categories of land-use. Most of the research goals were achieved with the use of Geographical Information Systems technology. Comparative analysis of the studied sample plots show differences in the landscape structure of these places. Structural differences between the chosen sample plots are shown by using all measurements of indices for landscape mosaic, among others: density and sizes of patches, length of edges, shapes and variations estimated according to cartographic and spatial imagery interpretations. The cause of the strongest transformations in the landscape structure which took place in the sample plots in the 19th century were changes in land use connected with the introduction of the forestry industry. In two sample plots situated in the northern part of Zabory Landscape Park, there was an especially important change from a non-forest to a forest landscape. It took place in the last decade of 19th century. Later, the forest area expanded, but its range and rate of growth was much lower. Cleardifferences between sample plots also took place based on satellite data interpretation. From a comparison of ranges and average values of standardized vegetation index in each area and historical cartographic data, it was concluded that NDVI values in the present satellite images are determined by the way the area was used in the past.

Opis:
Celem pracy było oszacowanie udziału sposobów użytkowania w otoczeniu 738 małych miast Polski (<20 tys. mieszkańców), z uwzględnieniem potencjału rekreacyjnego lasów i ewentualnych zagrożeń wyni¬kających z bliskiego sąsiedztwa z intensywnie użytkowanymi gruntami rolnymi.
The impact of land use within the areas surrounding cities is particularly strong in the case of small towns, as forest and agri¬cultural areas often directly border residential areas. There are more and more publications that document the impact of these two forms of land use, highlighting, among other things, the importance of spatial conditions that determine the impact of the environment on the quality of life of city inhabitants. The aim of the study was to estimate the share of different land use methods in the vicinity of 738 small Polish towns (<20,000 inhabitants), taking into account the recreational potential of forests and possible threats resulting from close proximity to intensively used agricultural land. The study was based on the Corine Land Cover database from 2018. Information on the location of urban development, forests and agricultural land (arable land and orchards) was obtained from this database. The results indicate that in the case of 35.6% of small Polish towns, built-up areas were not adjacent to forests, and 7.3% of towns did not have forests within a radius of 1.5 km. On the other hand, only in 5.6% of cities did no built-up areas border agricultural areas, and in 4.9% of cities more than 80% of built-up areas were surrounded by fields. In cities surrounded by fields, special attention should be paid to the design of new green areas and the redevolopment of existing ones when planning the spatial structure.
