This study deals with seasonal variation of heavy metals in sediments of Muthupet lagoon, Southeast coast of India from September 2011 to August 2012. The bulk sediments were association with sand, silt and clay. Geoaccumulation index (lgeo) was used to quantitatively assess the influences of heavy metal pollution. Heavy metals were determined by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and the results were compared to permissible limits of WHO/USEPA. The minimum concentration of heavy metals in all the stations were found during the post monsoon and summer seasons and the maximum concentration of heavy metals in all the stations were found during the premonsoon and monsoon seasons. The reason for the pollution was land drainage, irrigation through channels and municipal wastes and also the peak agricultural activities due to the release of fresh water from reservoirs. Among all the metals iron was found to be maximum in all the stations in postmonsoon and summer season followed by magnesium and manganese. Apart from these three metal, all other six metals are recorded in moderate range. The reason for the high concentration of these metals are anthropogenic activity, agriculture, aquaculture and the rivers regular in and out flow throughout the study duration in the lagoon area.

Opis:
The paper deals with the conformal mapping of finite, plane, simply connected domains, representing oceans, lakes, estuaries, bays, lagoons, and other natural water bodies of this kind. As a rule, they are bounded by geometrically complex shorelines. The partial differential problems investigated in Oceanology and posed in such domains have turned out to be difficult to solve for at least three reasons. They follow on from the mathematical properties of the differential equations governing such problems, from the just-mentioned geometrical complexity of the domains of solution, and from the sensitivity of the solutions to boundary conditions. In view of the last reason the contours admitted as boundaries of the domains of the solution ought to be as close to the real shorelines as possible. The obviously inaccurate approximation of the shorelines by ‘staircases’, which appears rather often (cf. Catewicz & Jankowski 1983, Lin & Chandler-Wilde 1996) as a consequence of applying finite difference methods to the solution of the partial differential problems, raises serious doubts from the point of view of Numerical Fluid Mechanics. It is recalled in the paper that such inaccuracies are not unavoidable: that complicated plane domains can be transformed accurately by means of properly applied conformal mapping onto regular, canonical domains – in particular, onto discs or squares. Such a transformation is demonstrated on the rather difficult example of the Vistula Lagoon. The transformation begins with the decomposition of the domain into five plane subdomains, each one of which is eventually transformed onto a disc. Every such result is arrived at quite independently of the remaining subdomains, by means of a set of properly selected consecutive mappings. Hence, the final canonical domain consists in this case of a system of five discs which, however, within the framework of this differential problem, have to be treated as interconnected. The interconnections involve images of four segments of straight lines, separating the original subdomains. The transformations and the resulting canonical domain presented in the paper are intended to be applied to the solution of certain hydrodynamical problems concerning the Vistula Lagoon, which will be published elsewhere.

Opis:
Unlike most freshwater bivalves, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha PALLAS) have free swimming larvae and are thus dependent on water currents to guarantee the spreading of their offspring. Although planktonic, the larvae are able to carry out some directed movements. This paper presents investigations carried out in the Szczecin Lagoon, testing the settlement of larvae on different materials at three sites. Zebra mussel larvae preferred the central part of the lagoon for settlement and favoured horizontal over vertical orientation. The rank order referring to number of settled mussels was net > wood > stones > mussel shells > PVc. Water current velocity in the crucial phase was usually very low (<10 cm/s), i.e. not above the limit for settlement. Therefore, other parameters must be involved as well. Two factors are discussed in particular: 1) salinity, and 2) sensory capacities of larvae, linked to the question of their capability of choosing where they settle.

Opis:
Planktonic ciliates occasionally form brief rapid increases in numbers (blooms) that can be trophically important. Although model simulations and mesocosm studies indicate that blooms occur over 10 to 20 days, field data are rarely suffi ciently detailed to reveal their occurrence and demise. Our data (collected over 57 weeks across a coastal lagoon) offer insights into the population dynamics of a single species, place these in the context of the entire ciliate assemblage, and provide guidance on what should continue to be examined. Specifically, to evaluate population dynamics we examine two species of Cyrtostrombidium, characterise temporal and spatial variation of their abundance, and relate these to abiotic phenomena and biological factors. This is also the first report of Cyrtostrombidium in a tropical coastal lagoon. Collectively our analysis reveals key aspects of the dynamics of this genus: 1) small-scale peaks in abundance are ~30 m in size and can persist for ~10–30 days, reaching a maximum of 100 cells ml–1; 2) these increases are driven by biotic factors (revealed through autocorrelation analysis); 3) long-term trends are driven by the shift between dry and rainy seasons and by the periods of isolation of lagoon from the sea (revealed through multiple regression analysis); 4) blooms may at times control primary production; 5) conjugation, an ecologically important event, may be associated with blooms (at times 9% of population was conjugating); and 6) dinoflagellate parasitism, poorly described in oligotrichs, is potentially important in population demise. These results both reflect on how ciliates may behave in short-term events and should encourage the continued need for detailed observations of field samples at a high taxonomic resolution.

Lagoon gyttja layers occurring in anomalously high position (up to 2.5 m above the present-day sea level) are known from the central part of the Vistula Spit (Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation). Complex investigations of lagoon sediments (gyttja, sand), including radiocarbon (14C) dating as well as mollusc, pollen and diatom analyses, have been carried out in 2004–2005. The results of these investigations indicate that the lagoon sediments were deposited in the Late Subboreal–Early Subatlantic period in a shallow freshwater, overgrown basin periodically influenced by brackish water. The anomalously high level of the lagoon gyttja is determined by neotectonic activity of Earth’s crust blocks.

This article addresses the southern sector of the Curonian Spit, the largest coastal barrier of the Baltic Sea. A comparative analysis of the deposits that make up parts of the Curonian and Vistula Spits is given. The detailed analysis of the geological and geomorphological structure of the southern part of the Curonian Spit suggests that, within this sector, it is not a sedimentary barrier created by wave action and Aeolian processes in the Holocene, but a part of a pre-Holocene fluvioglacial plain. Field work has shown that the ancient alluvial or fluvioglacial plain is in the lagoon shore of the Vistula Spit.

The paper analyzes the advanced technologies of wastewater treatment with a high content of organic pollutants and ammonium ions. Two different bi-stage scenarios for the treatment of such effluents are proposed. The first scenario includes the pretreatment in aerated lagoons and the final stage at the wastewater treatment plants after appropriate dilution with municipal sewages. The second scenario also includes the first stage in aerated lagoons with a tertiary treatment at the plant for cyanobacteria cultivation with the use of obtained biomass for biofuels production. The effects of the aeration periodicity on the leachate treatment efficiency and also on the composition of microbiocenosis in the aerated lagoons were investigated. The leachates of the Lviv landfill of municipal solid waste (MSW) were used in experimental investigations. The Lviv landfill of MSW was used for domestic and industrial wastes deposition for almost six decades, since the 1960s. It was found that the highest effect of ammoniacal nitrogen removal was obtained in the mode of periodic aeration, with the cycle duration of two hours including the one-hour aeration. It was found that the microorganisms extracted from the leachates of the Lviv MSW landfill are prospective for the new biotechnologies of treatment of the highly concentrated wastewaters, since this microbiocenosis is resistant to the widespread pollutants, in particular to heavy metal ions.

The aim of the present paper is to show the impact of the diversity of social capital of the international sailing environment on the development of tourist services around the Szczecin Lagoon and Dąbie Lake. The target group are Polish and German participants in nautical tourism in the cross-border research area. Materials for the article were collected during field studies conducted in 2009–2012. The questionnaire method was mainly used to obtain information. The paper uses elements of social capital for the purpose of creating the image of the place and promotional activities of the region. The sources of capital were: motivations for sailing, additional leisure time activities, form of sailing activity, individual choice of a place of rest as well as the most frequently chosen domestic and international destinations, as well as personal data like gender, age and nationality of respondents. Understanding capital as a resource allowed it to be used for the development of the research area. The analysis of the research results allowed to specify one characteristic which was positively evaluated by two groups of respondents and these are landscape conditions of the Szczecin Lagoon. Contact with nature turned out to be the most important motivation for sailing. On the other hand, the heterogeneity of the Polish and German sailing environment is clear in the context of age, sailing qualifications, property status, which determines the direction of cruises undertaken and other activities accompanying sailing. All the above-mentioned elements of social capital bring benefits for the research area, observed in the economic and social dimension. Based on them, promotional and infrastructural changes were proposed for the needs of the tourist services sector, including, among others, nature, cultural or qualified tourism.

Opis:
Competition for food can be observed in the macroplankton community in the Vistula Lagoon (northern Poland) in the spring (April-May-June). This is the time of mass occurrence of early developmental stages of the Baltic Sea herring, the European smelt perch, and stickleback. Additionally, some quantities of the shrimp Neomysis integer can be found. These species use the same food resources, i.e. small zooplankton, but they occupy different habitats. However, in a very special situation in the Vistula Lagoon (low depth and water mixing by winds) they are living together and compete for food. The purpose of this paper is to find out which species is the superior competitor for food among the macroplankton living in the Vistula Lagoon. Animal size (dry weight Dw), daily consumption rate (C), and coefficients of food assimilation efficiency (U-1), as well as utilization of consumed energy for growth (K1), and utilization of assimilated energy for growth (K2) by individuals of particular species were used as measures of individual success in competition for food. Animal abundance (n m-3), daily consumption rate of individuals of particular species living in the unit of water volume (J m-3 d-1), and total food consumed by animals of particular species living in the unit of water volume as a percent of the total food available were used as measures of population (or species) success in competition for food. The re¬sults do not provide a clear indication which species is a superior competitor for food. Because competition occurs at the level of individuals rather than populations, a question arises why just Neomysis, despite their lowest food consumption and the lowest daily production rate succeeded in reaching high population numbers and sum of daily food consumption by population.

Terrestrial groundwater discharge (TGWD) can be an important pathway for pollutants into coastal water bodies. Thus, a reliable way to quantify it is essential for efficient coastal management practices. This study evaluated the feasibility of using constant-density models for estimating TGWD amounts into the Indian River Lagoon, which is a variable-density estuarine environment. Constant-density models were developed using MODFLOW, while variable-density models were developed using SEAWAT. The numerical models were calibrated to match the field measured head data under the lagoon. The amounts of TGWD into the IRL and hydraulic head distributions calculated by the two codes were compared over eight pairs of numerical experiments. Two of those numerical experiments used the calibrated model and field measured conditions, while the rest of them used modified versions of the calibrated models, including variable anisotropy ratio k, variable lagoon salinity $L_S$, and increased water table elevation by 5%. The results showed that the constant-density model is fairly accurate in estimating TGWD and head distributions at the calibrated k in the range of 1000–20,000 with an error not exceeding 9.4% under the actual measured field conditions. Even when $L_S$ was assumed to increase to ocean salinity value of 1.0, a case that rarely occurs in IRL, the calibrated constant-density model’s accuracy was not affected substantially. However, the constant-density model failed to represent the physics of the variable-density environment at k values lower than 1000, where the error exceeded 129%. Generally, the accuracy of the constant-density model was found to increase substantially at lower $L_S$ and higher water table elevations.

During storm surges and wind tides in the gulf or in the lagoon, sluicing will be required for vessels to tackle the Vistula Spit. This procedure does not require significant water flow through the channel in normal conditions. However, in the case of a lock failure or in the case of controlled opening of the gate to increase water exchange in the lagoon or to reduce flood risk in the Vistula Lagoon, high flow rates may occur in the navigable channel and in the neighboring port basin. In order to inves-tigate the hydraulic conditions in such extraordinary situations, numerical modeling of the hydrodynamics during water damming in the gulf or in the lagoon is performed. To analyze the hydrodynamics of the artificial connection between the sea and the lagoon during periods of high water stages, mathematical modeling is required. This paper presents the shallow water equations (SWE) model adapted to simulate the flow through the port basin and the navigable channel. The calcula-tions allowed the relation between the water head and the capacity of the navigable channel to be found, as well as to analyze circulations which may occur in the port basin.

Opis:
The Curonian Lagoon is a shallow freshwater lagoon of significant environmental value in the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea. The objective of the study was to evaluate changes of ice indices (duration, thickness and breakup dates) of this lagoon and to assess their possible tendencies in the 21st century. A methodology was developed combining the assessment of past changes (1960–2017) of ice indices and their projections in the near (2021–2040) and far (2081–2100) future periods using a hydrometeorological database, statistical methods and regression analysis as well as regional climate models and RCP scenarios. Climate change has a considerable impact on ice conditions in the Curonian Lagoon. During the historical period of 1960–2017, the Curonian Lagoon was covered with ice for 72 days a year, ice thickness reached 23 cm, whereas ice breakup was observed in the middle of March on average. According to the different scenarios, in the near and far future periods, ice duration will last 35–45 and 3–34 days, respectively. Ice thickness is projected to be 13–15 cm in the near future, whereas, at the end of the century, it is expected to decline to 0–13 cm. In the past, the lagoon ice cover remained until the middle of the third decade of February. At the end of the 21st century, RCP8.5 scenario projects the most drastic shifts: the permanent ice cover might be absent, whereas short-term ice cover is expected to melt already in the beginning of January.

Morocco is one of the countries most affected by the scarcity of water resources and the poor distribution of rainfall. Natural lagoon is the most widely used treatment process in Morocco. Indeed, Morocco is a sunny country throughout the year. The lagoon system requires minimal effort in operation and maintenance. Moreover, this system is the best process for removing bacteria indicators. For these reasons, a study of the purification performance of natural lagoons during five years, located in Chichaoua region (Morocco) was carried out. The lagoon system was monitored for five years, with measurements taken every three months at the input and output of the system. It received a hydraulic loading rate (HLR) between 1171 and 2760 m3 with an average of 2053 m3/day. The obtained results show the removal of 37% of TSS, 63% of BOD5, 60% of COD, 61% of NH4+, 37% of TP, and 6.5 log units of coliforms during the mentioned monitoring period. Thus, the effluent values do not always comply with the Moroccan water quality requirement for irrigation reuse. Additionally, the statistical analyses confirm the presence of a strong linear correlation between almost all variables in the lagoon output. Therefore, the performance efficiency of the lagoon in removing organic matter and nutrients was significantly (p < 0.05) dependent on the season. However, the fecal contamination was not significantly (p > 0.05) affected by the seasons in this study. At the end of this study a complementary treatment before the reuse of treated wastewater, was proposed.

Opis:
By the end of the 1980s sewage sludge management at waste water treatment plants in Poland was usually limited to the storage of sludge. For this purpose sludge lagoons were used primarily as storage tanks with the drainage systems. Having developed the technical feasibility of sludge management it was determined that the final disposal of sewage sludge should be carried out outside the wastewater treatment plants. From that point projects of wastewater treatment plants took into account the concept of sludge management, while the existing wastewater treatment plants were modernized so the treatment of sludge enabled them to be efficiently managed. Storage of sludge in lagoons as ineffective and capable to generate emissions of microbial odors and contaminants into the air, or even causing pollution of the soil and water in the event of improper collection, has become limited at the first step and next was eliminated. Many of lagoons have already undergone reclamation. However many still need to do this. The article presents concepts and directions for sludge lagoon rehabilitation at the wastewater treatment plant in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

Opis:
The Lagos Lagoon is under increased pressure from growth in human population, growing demands for natural resources, human activities, and socioeconomic factors. The degree of these activities and the impacts are directly proportional to urban expansion and growth. In the light of this situation, the objectives of this study were: (i) to estimate through satellite imagery analysis the extent of changes in the Lagos Lagoon environment for the periods 1984, 2002, 2013 and 2019 using Landsat-derived data on land cover, Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI); and (ii) to evaluate the relationship between the derived data and determine their relative influence on the lagoon environment. The derived data were subjected to descriptive statistics, and relationships were explored using Pearson’s correlation and regression analysis. The effect of land cover on LST was measured using the Contribution Index and a trend analysis was carried out. From the results, the mean LSTs for the four years were 22.68°C (1984), 24.34°C (2002), 26.46°C (2013) and 28.40°C (2019). Generally, the mean LSTs is in opposite trend with the mean NDVIs and EVIs as associated with their dominant land cover type. The strongest positive correlations were observed between NDVI and EVI while NDVI had the closest fit with LST in the regression. Built-up areas have the highest contributions to LST while vegetation had a cooling influence. The depletion in vegetative cover has compromised the biodiversity of this environment and efforts are required to reverse this trend.

Due to the unfavorable course of the boundary line between Poland and Russia in the area of the Vistula Lagoon and the Vistula Spit, Poland’s access to the Gdańsk Bay through the Pilava Strait has been hindered. In 1991, Polish-Soviet negotiations, aimed at agreeing on the rules of navigation through the Pilava Strait and the Vistula Lagoon, were launched. The talks ended in failure, and the Soviet side demanded that its units be granted the right to navigate through Poland’s inland waterways. It was only in 2009 that Poland signed an agreement with Russia, regulating navigation through the Vistula Lagoon; still, as follows from the interpretation by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it did not include the Pilava Strait. Consequently, the freedom of navigation through the Vistula Lagoon continues to be dependent on the state of Polish-Russian relations.

The paper analyzes the influence of air mass movement on moving (the leeway) surface water in the Świnoujście–Szczecin fairway region on the Szczecin Lagoon. The Szczecin Lagoon includes waters of the Odra River estuary (Poland’s second largest river) and the southern Baltic Sea. To calculate the leeway parameters, a relevant surface drifter was outlined and constructed. The data on the leeway of the drifter was obtained from in-situ experiments conducted on the Szczecin Lagoon in the summer of 2018. In turn, the air mass movement data was recorded at meteorological stations in Trzebież and Świnoujście. A statistical analysis of the leeway parameters of the drifter was also presented. Distributions of the leeway and wind speeds in the Świnoujście–Szczecin fairway regions were established. Moreover, linear regressions between the leeway and wind parameters were performed by decomposing the leeway into its downwind and crosswind components for each 10-minute sample. It is worth highlighting that relationships between these components of the leeway and wind parameters were studied for weak, medium, and stronger winds. This research may be useful for increasing navigation safety in the Świnoujście–Szczecin fairway regions on the Szczecin Lagoon.

Opis:
Migratory smelt (Osmerus eperlanus eperlanus L.) may be perceived as a valuable indicative organism in monitoring the current environmental status and in assessment of a potential risk caused by selenium pollution. The aim of the study was to compare the selenium content in the European smelt from the Bay of Pomerania, Gdansk, and the Curonian Lagoon. The experimental material consisted of smelt samples (muscle) caught in the bays of Gdansk and Pomerania and the Curonian Lagoon (estuaries of the three largest rivers in the Baltic Sea basin: the Oder, the Vistula and the Neman). A total of 133 smelt were examined (Pomerania Bay n = 67; Gdansk Bay n = 35; Curonian Lagoon n = 31). Selenium concentrations were determined spectrofluorometrically. The data were analyzed statistically using one-way analysis of variance, calculated in Statistica PL software. The region of fish collection significantly affected the content of selenium in the examined smelts. The highest content of selenium was observed in smelt caught in the Bay of Gdansk (0.236 μg g-1 w.w.), then in smelt from the Pomeranian Bay (0.165 μg g-1 w.w.), and the lowest in smelt obtained in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania) (0.104 μg g-1 w.w.). The low concentrations of selenium recorded in the smelt show that there is a deficiency of this element, especially in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania). Geochemically, Poland and Lithuania are selenium deficient areas. Migratory smelt may serve as indicative organisms of environmental levels of selenium.

A total of 2398 fish specimens (1091 Percidae and 1307 Cyprinidae) belonging to 16 species (3 Percidae and 13 Cyprinidae), caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined within December 1994-March 1997. The parasites found were identified as belonging to 63 taxa (61 species as well as Diplostomum spp. flukes and glochidia Unionidae gen. sp. which could not be identified to species) of the Microsporea (1), Protozoa (1), Myxozoa (2), Monogenea (10), Digenea (15), Cestoda (11), Nematoda (11), Acanthocephala (5), Hirudinea (1), Mollusca (1), Copepoda (4), and Branchiura (1). The percids and cyprinids were found to support 37 and 40 parasitic taxa, respectively, the taxon-richest parasite fauna occurring in zander, Sander lucioperca (26 taxa), followed by carp bream, Abramis brama, (24), European perch, Perca fluviatilis (24), roach, Rutilus rutilus (19), ruffe, Gymnocelphlus cernuus (15), and Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio (11). The remaining fish species hosted less than 10 parasitic species each. Metacercariae of the genus Diplostomum, found in about 37% of the fish examined, and Tylodelphys clavata, recorded in about 24% of the fish, proved the commonest parasites. The study showed the Vistula Lagoon cyprinid and percid parasite fauna to be dominated by freshwater species, frequencies of their occurrence in the brackishwater lagoon being lower than those in freshwater reservoirs. Frequencies of the 6 marine parasitic species found in the lagoon were, too, lower than those in the sea. It is suggested that some of the parasites (Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Diplozoon paradoxum of the Monogenea, Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata of the Digenea, and Achtheres percarum of the Copepoda) prefer brackishwater habitats.

The main 137Cs accumulation zone in the study area was found to be located at depths below the 50-metre isobath, i.e. below the layer of hydrodynamic activity. In coastal waters not influenced by the fresh water discharge from the Curonian Lagoon, 137Cs occurs mostly in soluble form. The particulate 137Cs activity concentration in the marine area affected by Curonian Lagoon water can make up 10% of the total 137Cs activity concentration. The circulation model was developed to assess the distribution of artificial radionuclides in Lithuanian territorial waters. The model was validated on the basis of data acquired during the measurement campaign in the Lithuanian part of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon in the years 1999–2001. The model enables the 137Cs activity concentration to be simulated as a passive admixture (error within c. 15%).

One of the dramatic effects of global warming is the retreat of glaciers. This phenomenon has intensified in the last two decades. Postglacial areas are quickly colonised by various groups of organisms. Auto- and heterotrophic microorganisms play an especially vital role in these processes. They thrive in shallow glacial lagoons which often form in front of retreating glaciers. These reservoirs are characterised by high dynamics of physicochemical parameters, including: salinity, temperature and concentrations of organic compounds and nutrients. The conducted microbiological studies have revealed rich structural and functional diversity of bacteria occurring in the ecosystem of Ecology Lagoon situated on King George Island. Bacteria found on the surface of algae and stones in the shore zone of the lagoon showed particularly intense metabolic activity. A molecular analysis has indicated that unique taxonomic groups of bacteria occur in the ecosystem of Ecology Lagoon.

Opis:
The paper presents information related to the use of hydrophytic technology combined with traditional activated sludge solution for wastewater treatment in areas without central sewage system. The analyzed wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was operated in activated sludge technology with a hybrid activated sludge reactor where biomass is kept in a settled and suspended form. Treatment system was completed with a hydroponic lagoon. Hydroponic lagoon has been used as tertiary treatment, in which the self-cleaning processes with the participation of the plant has come to an additional reduction of nutrients. The analyzed three-stage treatment plant is located in the municipality of Nowa Sól. Only domestic wastewater delivered by slurry tanks is treated there in the amount of 60 m3/d. During the observation, high average concentrations of total nitrogen (201.0 mgN/dm3) was observed and organic matter expressed by COD reaching 1341.5 mgO2/dm3 and BOD5 on the level of 246.3 mgO2/dm3 were noted. A characteristic feature of the object designed for wastewater treatment delivered by slurry tanks is high irregularity of wastewater supply and high instantaneous loads of pollutants (the system does not provide expansion tank). The biggest inequality factor of the flow to the reactor was observed in December 2014 (Nd=3.9). During the observations days with no inflow of sewage also occurred. The study shows the dynamics of changes in the amount of delivered domestic wastewater and sewage flowing out of the treatment plant including inequality factor. Information about the quality of wastewater was used to determine the reduction of concentrations of pollutants such as organic matter, suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Badania nad możliwościami wykorzystania technik teledetekcyjnych do operacyjnego monitorowania stanu jakości wód Zalewu Wiślanego są prowadzone od roku 2006. Prace badawcze wykonywano w ramach trzech projektów międzynarodowych: SWANLAKE (projekt ESA Category-1 LBR), MONTRANSAT (projektu typu INTERREG dofinansowany ze środków Europejskiego Funduszu Rozwoju Regionalnego w ramach Programu Sąsiedztwa Litwa, Polska, Obwód Kaliningradzki Federacji Rosyjskiej) i VISLA (projekt dofinansowany ze środków Norweskiego Mechanizmu Finansowego). W prezentowanej pracy wykorzystano dane satelitarne rejestrowane przez skaner CHRIS/PROBA w trybie „Water”, pozyskującym dane w 18 kanałach spektralnych. Opracowaniu podlegało sześć bezchmurnych scen satelitarnych zarejestrowanych w latach 2007–2009. Obrazy satelitarne CHRIS/PROBA zostały poddane procesowi korekcji radiometrycznej, atmosferycznej i geometrycznej, a następnie dla tak przygotowanych danych przeprowadzono analizy statystyczne mające na celu otrzymanie formuł obliczeniowych umożliwiających uzyskanie rozkładów przestrzennych wybranych wskaźników jakości wody. Korekcję atmosferyczną wykonano przy zastosowaniu modelu ATCOR 2/3 w wersji 6.4.2. Dokonując analizy zależności między odbiciem spektralnym w punktach poboru wody a wartościami wskaźników jakości wody, określonymi metodami analitycznymi, otrzymano formuły empiryczne dla widzialności krążka Secchiego (R2=0.75), zawartości zawiesiny ogółem (R2=0.88) oraz zawartości chlorofilu-a (R2=0.73). Wyniki jakie uzyskano dla obszaru badawczego „Zalew Wiślany” wskazują na możliwość zastosowania danych CHRIS do operacyjnego określenia m.in. przezroczystości wód, zawartości zawiesiny ogółem oraz zawartości chlorofilu-a.
The investigation possibilities of usage remote sensing techniques for water quality monitoring of Vistula Lagoon have been made since 2006. All research studies, presented in the article, have been done under three international projects: SWANLAKE (ESA Project Category-1 LBR), MONTRANSAT (INTERREG project co-financed from European Regional Development Fund within the framework Neighbourhood Programme Lithuania, Poland and Kaliningrad Region of Russian Federation) and VISLA (project co-financed within the frame Norway Grants). All presented in article analysis based on the six cloudless superspectral satellite images of CHRIS/PROBA (in “Water” mode, 18 spectral bands) acquired in 2007–2009. CHRIS/ PROBA images were processed according to successive steps: radiometric correction, atmospheric correction, geometric registration, water quality parameters extraction. CHRIS/PROBA satellite data was made using ATCOR 2/3 model – version 6.4.2. Water quality parameters were extracted using empirical and statistical relationships between CHRIS measured spectral reflectance and in situ measurements (regression based): Secchi disc depth (R2=0.75), suspended solids (R2=0.88), chlorophyll-a (R2=0.73). Results presented in article for Vistula Lagoon test site, shows the real possibilities of CHRIS satellite data usage for near real time determination of various water quality parameters like water transparency, total suspended solids, chlorophyll-a concentration.

The aim of the study was to assess the suitability of a plankton net (diameter of 60 cm, mesh size of 500 μm) and a column sampler (length of 200 cm, diameter of 5 cm) for estimating the density of zooplankton predatory species (Neomysis integer, Leptodora kindtii, Cercopagis pengoi). Nocturnal sampling was performed once a month (May—November 2018) in the Vistula Lagoon (southern Baltic) in the range depth of 1.3—3.6 m. Statistical analysis indicated no significant differences between the N. integer and C. pengoi density estimated by the two sampling gears. In the case of L. kindtii, the mean density obtained by the column sampler was higher when analyzing all samples together and/or deep-water samples only (p < 0.02). However, no such differences were found at shallow stations i.e. up to ca. 2 m in depth. It was assumed that the more suitable sampling equipment for estimating zooplankton abundance in a shallow, well-mixed transitional (brackish) basin is the column sampler. This type of gear, so far used mainly for sampling of micro and mesozooplankton, allows the simultaneous nocturnal collection of the entire zooplankton size spectrum, including representatives of large predatory species. The suitability of light traps for qualitative studies of zooplankton species responding positively to light under the high turbidity of the Vistula Lagoon was also investigated. The traps proved to be most useful for N. integer (100% frequency), and much less for L. kindtii (46.2%) and C. pengoi (27.3%).

The great cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis (Blumenbach, 1798) is one of the most important birds in the Vistula Lagoon and the Gulf of Gdańsk area. As a typical piscivore the bird plays a significant part in life cycles of parasites in aquatic ecosystems. Within January 2000-June 2001, a complete helminthological examination was performed on great cormorants collected in the nesting area at Kąty Rybackie on the Vistula Spit (80 specimens) and in the Vistula Lagoon (10 specimens). The infection prevalence mean intensity, and intensity range were 92.2%, 376.5, and 1-4524, respectively. The presence of 9 digenean species (Paryphostomum radiatum (Dujardin, 1845), Petasiger exaeretits Dietz, 1909, P. phalacroracis (Yamaguti, 1939), Mesorchis pseudoechinatus (Olsson, 1876), Metorchis xanthosomus (Creplin, 1846), Cryptocotyle concavum (Creplin, 1825), Hysteromorpha triloba (Rudolphi, 1819), Tylodelphys clavata (Nordmann, 1832), and Holostephanus dubinini Vojtek et Vojtkova, 1968) was recorded, P. phalacrocoracis being the most common parasile (prevalence 92.2%, mean intensity 323.8). Tylodelphys clavata proved a parasite new for the great cormorant moreover the records of P. phalacrocoracis, H. triloba, and H. dubinini are the first in Poland, while C. concavinn and M. pseudoechinatus were for the first time recorded in the great cormorant in Poland.

The detailed sedimentological study of the 150-m-thick Muschelkalk succession, deposited on a small (~200 by 80 km), morphologically diverse Upper Silesian carbonate platform during four major marine-transgressive pulses of the Tethys Ocean, enhanced the understanding of the depositional history, palaeogeography, and facies distribution. A total of thirty-five lithofacies types were identified, described and interpreted in terms of depositional settings. These different lithofacies represent various shallow-marine environments along the platform transect, from peritidal to offshore areas. The vertical and lateral organization of the lithofacies delineated was caused by the interplay of platform morphology, third-order eustasy and the long-term tectonic evolution of the area. Accordingly, the carbonate system studied is a good example of the influence of large-scale processes on the facies architecture of carbonate platforms. In general, all of the four Transgressive Systems Tracts are characterized by similarity in lithofacies composition and vertical succession and by minor lateral change, indicating only limited influence of the three large-scale factors mentioned on lithofacies development and distribution during transgressions. In contrast, each of the four associated Highstand Systems Tracts comprises an individual (unique) lithofacies assemblage displaying substantial regional and local variation, which indicates that the filling of accommodation space during highstands strongly depended on the extrinsic processes.

Following paper presents a new aspect of the study of submerged landscapes in the Szczecin Lagoon. This aspect is the importance of coastal processes for the conservation status of the sites and archaeological contexts. Underwater prospection can lead to collection of archaeological material of an entirely different character. These artifacts may in fact come from the destroyed land erosion processes (abrasion), and so – in terms of methodology of archeology – lie on the secondary deposit. Of course, cognitive value of such sources is very different than artifacts found in full context. However, there is possibility to use them not only to study archeology, but to assess the scale, pace and extent of coastal phenomena perceived as post-depositional processes.

Opis:
Phytoplankton community structure was studied from 2002 to 2016 in the Vistula Lagoon (southern Baltic Sea) in the context of the 2010 shift in its population, as well as the reason for this shift and its environmental impact. This evident shift was indicated by Multidimensional Scaling at the Bray Curtis similarity level of 31%. Before 2010, the primary components of phytoplankton were Cyanobacteria (up to 98% of the biomass, October 2007) and Chlorophyta (40%, July 2002). After 2010, the contribution of Cyanobacteria considerably decreased, and the proportions of other phyla increased. The total phytoplankton biomass positively correlated with phosphorus, and Cyanobacteria biomass with silica. Evident changes were also observed in the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton. Before 2010, the highest values of biomass occurred in autumn, and were related to high biomass of Cyanobacteria. Higher biomass has been recently reached in spring, during the dominance of Ochrophyta associated with Chlorophyta, Charophyta, and Cryptophyta. Generalised additive models showed a significant decreasing trend of the total phytoplankton biomass, Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, and flagellates, suggesting a decrease in eutrophication. This trend is concurrent with a considerable increase in the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass since 2010. The increased ratio, however, did not result from elevated zooplankton biomass, but from the drop in phytoplankton biomass. Therefore, the most probable reason for the decrease in phytoplankton biomass was the simultaneous decrease in the concentration of all nutrients. The potential additional impact of filtration by a new alien bivalve Rangia cuneata G. B. Sowerby I, 1832 is also discussed.

Alien species are now found all over the world. New fish parasites have been unintentionally introduced with infected alien fish imported for aquaculture or have sometimes spread with their intermediate invertebrate hosts transported in the ballast waters of ships. Four alien fish parasites have been recorded in Polish coastal lakes and lagoons, all parasitising eels. Three were introduced with the final host – the Japanese eel – introduced for aquaculture (Anguillicola crassus, Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae and Pseudodactylogyrus bini) and one (Paratenuisentis ambiguus) with its sole intermediate host (Gammarus tigrinus).

The round goby, Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1811) was introduced into southern Baltic waters (including the Vistula Lagoon) from the Black Sea and Sea of Azov in the early 1990s. This study describes the parasites of the round goby in its new environment. In 2004, 486 round goby specimens from the Vistula Lagoon were examined for parasites. The following taxa were identified: Dermocystidium sp.; Protozoa: Trichodina domerguei domerguei (Wallengren, 1897); Digenea: Cryptocotyle concavum (Creplin, 1825), Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata (Nordmann, 1831), Bunodera luciopercae (M¨uller, 1776); Cestoda: Bothriocephalus scorpii (M¨uller, 1776), Eubothrium crassum (Bloch, 1779), Paradilepis scolecina (Rudolphi, 1819), Proteocephalus filicollis (Rudolphi, 1802), P. gobiorum Dogel et Bychovsky, 1939, Proteocephalus sp.; Nematoda: Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974, Camallanus truncatus (Rudolphi, 1814), Contracaecum spp., Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum (Linstow, 1872), Dichelyne minutus (Rudolphi, 1819), Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802); Acanthocephala: Echinorhynchus gadi M¨uller, 1776, Pomphorhynchus laevis (M¨uller, 1776). The parasites found were all local species, already reported from Poland. Except for Dermocystidium sp., C. concavum, P. gobiorum, and D. minutes, they have already been recorded in other fish species in the Vistula Lagoon. The prevalence and mean intensity of infection was low (18.3%; 4.0 indiv. – this value does not include ciliates). The most frequent parasites included H. aduncum (9.9%, 1.2 indiv.) and A. crassus (9.1%, 1.2 indiv.). In addition, Dermocystidium sp., B. luciopercae, E. crassum, P. scolecina, P. filicollis, C. truncatus and C. ephemeridarum are reported from the round goby for the first time. As the fish has only recently appeared in the Vistula Lagoon, its parasitic fauna has not yet developed to the full.

Opis:
This paper analyzes whether physicochemical properties significantly influence the occurrence of zooplankton in a brackish reservoir. The studies were carried out on the Vistula Lagoon in August and September from 2006 to 2009 at 32 research sites. The environmental conditions in the Vistula Lagoon varied widely. At the time of the investigation, 17 species of rotifers, six species of Cladocera, and ten species of Copepoda were noted, and the total density of plankton fauna ranged from 145 to 765 ind. dm3. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between the occurrence of some zooplankton species and certain environmental parameters, whereas the sampling sites were grouped according to study years. The zooplankton systems recorded at the research sites in 2006 constitute the most disparate group. Thus, it can be concluded that physicochemical properties might significantly impact both individual species (depending on their environmental demands) and entire zooplankton clusters.

The main goal of this research was to determine the impact of sludge lagoons collecting sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment plant in Almaty (Kazachstan), on groundwater and surface water quality. After geophysical examination of the study area (including Vertical Electroresistivity Survey and Seismic Survey), there were set three sampling points for examination of groundwater quality, and 2 points for sampling water from the river Almatynka Bol’shaya, winding 250÷500 meters from the borders of lagoons. The results obtained from the analysis of collected samples showed high concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, PO4 ions and other compounds in groundwater in the vicinity of sludge lagoons. It was also found that in the river section downstream sludge lagoons there were higher concentrations of heavy metals and other contaminants, than in the river section upstream.
Uzyskane rezultaty wykazały wysoką zawartość jonów Fe, Mn, Zn, PO4 i in. w wodach gruntowych w sąsiedztwie badanych lagun. Stwierdzono również, że w dolnym przekroju badawczym rzeki (poniżej lagun osadowych) stężenia metali ciężkich oraz szeregu innych zanieczyszczeń były znacznie wyższe niż w przekroju górnym (powyżej lagun).

Anguillicola crassus is an Asian nematode, dwelling in eel swim bladder and accidentally introduced to Europe. The eel becomes infected by consuming either crustaceans (intermediate hosts) or small fish (paratenic hosts), supporting stage 3 larvae. In 2002, 15 specimens of dab (Limanda limanda) caught in the Gulf of Gdańsk and 8 caught in the Vistula Lagoon were examined for the presence of A. crassus larvae. Two Gulf of Gdańsk specimens and one Vistula Lagoon fish were found to host 4 stage 3 larvae of A. crassus. This is the first world's record of A. crassus in the dab. It is suggested that, due to a large size of the infected fish, they cannot function as paratenic hosts in the A. crassus life cycle.

The paper aims at analyzing discoveries of Ernesto Canal (a lifelong explorer of the Venetian lagoon archaeological remnants – both on land and under water) in the light of Sauro Gelichi studies. In particular, the critical review of ceramics from the area allows to conclude that the San Lorenzo isle was inhabited from the second through sixth century ad nevertheless great inundations of coastal zones of High Adriatic in that epoch. From the seventh century ad the isle gradually turned into a cemetery grounds, the dead being buried there in pit graves or in huge amphorae. Further on, author examines reasons behind inhabitation of these isles, connecting formation of the habitation centres (creation of the system of communication and commerce on the lagoon north) with climatic changes on the coasts of the Venetian lagoon and in ancient Altinum, what, at its ultimate phase, has lead to the growth of later settlements on the lagoon south, including Venice.

Opis:

Opis:
The entire estuary water is dominated by the discharge of the River Odra into the Szczecin Lagoon. The water body is brackish and the salinity in the central part ranges 0.5 and 2 PSU. The Lagoon has a long eutrophication history; usually, two phytoplankton biomass peaks are observed: Diatoms in spring and blue-green algae in summer. The recent data on zooplankton is limited. Rotifers and Cladocerans supply the bulk of the zooplankton biomass. The ichtiofauna is composed of fresh and brackish water, migratory and marine species. Zooplankton and water samples were collected during 2003–2005. The results suggest that during 10 season’s climate in Odra River estuary, Cladocera were the dominant group, large impact on the density of mesozooplankton were: Daphnia cucullata and Daphnia longispina, Copepoda played a lesser role in the Odra River estuary than Cladocera. Biomass of mesozooplankton from the Lagoon was significantly higher compared with the biomass of mesozooplankton from Odra River estuary, which could be related to a greater inflow of nutrients into the Lagoon and the increased growth of phytoplankton, which forms an excellent first stage food web for herbivorous and carnivorous zooplankton, and fish and consequently cormorants.

Opis:
The Vistula Lagoon is situated along the south-eastern shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk and is linked with the gulf through the Strait of Baltiysk. Separated from the open sea by the Vistula Spit, the Vistula Lagoon is a shallow body of water with a mean depth of 3 m; the bottom is covered with a layer of mud several metres thick. This article presents a unique, newly discovered locality of tree stumps occurring in situ at the bottom of the Vistula Lagoon. The radiocarbon age of the alder stumps and the top of the peat in which they are rooted is Subboreal. The alder wood was dated to 4770±35 and 3295±35 years BP. The top layers of peat were dated to 4670±40, 4410±35 and 3690±35 years BP. The considerable scatter of the dates indicates the significance of erosional processes during marine transgressions. Radiocarbon dates and pollen analyses indicate that in the late Atlantic – early Subboreal periods, the water level of the Vistula Lagoon was about 3 m lower than it is today. The −2 m level was passed no earlier than c. 3500 years ago; the −1 m level was reached around 2000 years ago.

The phenomenon of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms in the Baltic and the surrounding freshwater bodies has been known for several decades. The presence of cyanobacterial toxic metabolites in the Curonian Lagoon has been investigated and demonstrated for the first time in this work (2006–07). Microcystis aeruginosa was the most common and widely distributed species in the 2006 blooms. Nodularia spumigena was present in the northern part of the Curonian Lagoon, following the intrusion of brackish water from the Baltic Sea; this is the first time that this nodularin-(NOD)-producing cyanobacterium has been recorded in the lagoon.W ith the aid of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), four microcystins (MC-LR, MC-RR, MC-LY, MC-YR) and nodularin were detected in 2006.T he presence of these cyanobacterial hepatotoxic cyclic peptides was additionally confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and protein phosphatase inhibition assay (PP1).Micr ocystin-LR, the most frequent of them, was present in every sample at quite high concentrations (from <0.1 to 134.2 μg dm−3).I n 2007, no cyanobacterial bloom was recorded and cyanotoxins were detected in only 4% of the investigated samples.A comparably high concentration of nodularin was detected in the northern part of the Curonian Lagoon.I n one sample dimethylated MC-RR was also detected (concentration 7.5 μg dm−3).

The wastewater treatment plant of Settat city uses the natural lagooning technology, which requires low maintenance cost and little technical expertise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of plant performance during two years of operation (2019 and 2020), as well as the safety of its treated wastewater for reuse in agricultural irrigation. The results of this study show that the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids (SS) did not exceed the Moroccan standards for discharge. They also show a good stable pollutant load reduction with a mean of 86.44%, 86.89% and 74.61%, for BOD5, COD and SS, respectively. On the other hand, microbiological characterization classifies the treated wastewater as "B" quality water, because the fecal coliform numbers exceed the requirement for "A" quality (1000 CFU/100 ml).

Opis:
It is studied the distribution of Hg in bottom sediments of estuaries on the banks of the open water area of the Vistula Lagoon and in the Kaliningrad Sea Canal (KSC) isolated from it. Methods for the determination of Hg: inversive voltammetry and highly sensitive flameless atomic absorption spectrometry. It has been established: from spring to autumn the activation of storms and surge events in the lagoon, intensification of the water flushing regime of the channels ensure a significant Hg decrease in river mouths, but in dynamically weakened KSC conditions - an increase in Hg (from 0.05 to 0.85 mg / kg). In KSC bays, the safe level of Hg (0.3 mg / kg) for the period 2000-2015 was not exceeded (0.008 to 0.216 mg / kg), which indicates a favorable ecological and epidemiological situation. Hg determinations by low-sensitivity methods can be used only in qualitative assessments of the variability in concentrations of any dangerous toxicant. Finding a reliable amount of Hg in river mouths requires the use of highly sensitive methods of analysis.

The preservation status of the mollusc shell accumulation of sandy barriers at the Amvrakikos Gulf lagoon complex was studied. Taphonomic shell analysis of dead mollusc depositions was undertaken in the summer of 2016 at Amvrakikos lagoon complex within the Tsoukalio and Logarou sandy barriers, which showed significant differences among the major abundant bivalve species of Cerastoderma glaucum and Polititapes aureus. Both hydrodynamic transport and differential exposure to environmental conditions differ among the accumulated shells depositions of the lagoonal sandy barriers. The heavier and more durable shells of C. glaucum are frequently found concentrated at the Tsoukalio lagoon accumulations and show a higher intensity of fragmentation whereas at Logarou lagoon the bioerosion and abrasion is more intense. On the other hand, the lighter, thinner, and thus more fragile shells of P. aureus show higher concentration and intensity of fragmentation and bioerosion at Logarou lagoon sandy barriers. The continuous deposition of shells at Tsoukalio lagoonal sandy barriers, contrary to the longterm deposition at Logarou lagoon, explains the different types of accumulations among the lagoons which are attributed to the geomorphology of the sandy shores as well as the morphological characteristics of the different shells.

Field data were used to validate the performances of two atmospheric correction algorithms, to build a band-ratio algorithm for chl a and to validate MERIS-derived maps. The neural network-based Case 2 Regional processor was found suitable for mapping CDOM; for chl a the band-ratio algorithm applied to image data corrected with the 6S code was found more appropriate. Maps were in agreement with in situ measurements. This study confirmed the importance of atmospheric correction to estimate water quality and demonstrated the usefulness of MERIS in investigating eutrophic aquatic ecosystems.

Introduction. Eel is one of the most valuable commercial fish species of the Vistula Lagoon. For this reason its infection by non-indigenous species of parasites is the subject of the interest of sciencists. Material and methods. A total of 90 eel specimens caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined over the period of May-August 2005. The fish were subjected to standard procedures of parasitological examination and parasite identification. The fish were divided into two length classes: smaller and larger than 50 cm. To assess the effects of parasites on fish condition, the Fulton coefficient, expressed with the formula: WF = G · L⁻³ x 100, was calculated. Results. The fish were found to be hosts to 17 parasite taxa. The Ciliophora were represented by Trichodinella epizootica (Raabe, 1950); the Myxozoa by Myxidium giardi Cépede, 1906; the Digenea by Bunodera luciopercae (Müller, 1784), Deropristis inflata (Molin, 1859), Diplostomum spp., and Ichthyocotylurus platycephalus (Creplin, 1852); the Cestoda by Bothriocephalus claviceps (Goeze, 1782), Proteocephalus macrocephalus (Creplin, 1815), and Proteocephalus sp.; the Nematoda by Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974, Camallanus lacustris (Zoega, 1776), C. truncatus (Rudolphi, 1814), and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802); the Acanthocephala by Acanthocephalus lucii (Müller, 1776) and Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1802); the Hirudinea by Piscicola geometra (Linnaeus, 1761); and the Copepoda by Ergasilus sieboldi Nordmann, 1832. All fishes were infected, and the mean intensity of all parasites was 4.8 inds. The nematode Anguillicola crassus was the most frequent parasite (67.8%, 4.2 inds), represented by all developmental stages, but mostly by adult specimens. The fish condition coefficient was somewhat higher in the eel larger than 50 cm (0.1746) than in those smaller than 50 cm (0.1734); in addition, only Anguillicola crassus-free fish showed a higher condition coefficient (0.1861), compared to the infected specimens (0.1715).

Microorganisms associated with aquatic macrophytes can in various ways interact with a plant and influence its activity and vice versa. A low-salinity intrusion into freshwater environment can affect plant-microorganism interactions. In this study, effects of different salinity conditions on the abundance and community composition of associated microorganisms with charophytes in the Curonian Lagoon were assessed. From the results, we found that short term salinity changes affected the abundance of bacteria and fungi associated with charophytes, whereas no response was reflected in the taxa composition of fungi, showing that other factors could be of more importance. The increased fungi abundances and different fungi composition in August in comparison to June was probably related to senescence process of aquatic vegetation. 8 fungi taxa were isolated and identified in association with charophytes, while higher diversity was revealed by DGGE technique.

Selected biological and morphometric characters of two populations of the nonindigenous Chinese mitten crab, one from the Szczecin Lagoon (SL) and the other from San Francisco Bay (SFB),b oth sampled in autumn, were analysed. The SL crabs showed a significantly higher individual weight,l ength and carapace width. Males accounted for 55% (87 individuals) of the 179 SL crabs,an d 62.9% (90 individuals) of the SFB crabs. Statistical analysis of metric characters, expr essed as a percentage of carapace width (X2),en abled four diagnostic characters to be identified: abdomen width (X11),carapace height (X3),left claw length (X7) and carapace length (X1). These jointly explain 71.75% of the differences between the SL and SFB crabs and are indicative of the distinctness of the populations.

Opis:
In Poland and Russia, sharing the Vistula Lagoon, there are strong tendencies toward developing tourism, on the local and national scale. Socio-economic development of the Vistula Lagoon subregion can benefit from the ongoing process of improving infrastructure of ports and harbours. The aim of the paper is to analyse transport accessibility of ports and harbours of the Lagoon. Potential partially to replace land transport by ships is investigated. Travel times by land and waterways between ports and harbours of the Vistula Lagoon within national borders and the entire Lagoon basin are compared. On average, water transport requires more time – up to four hours, than land transport – up to three hours. However, advantages of water transport in travels from inner ports, like Frombork, Mamonovo, Nowa Pasłęka, and Ushakovo, to ports on the Vistula Spit are obvious. Due to shorter travel distances, water travel in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon is less time-consuming than in the Russian part.
Średnio biorąc, korzystanie z transportu wodnego wymaga nieco więcej czasu w całym regionie, do 4 godzin, niż w przypadku podróży samochodem, do 3 godzin.

Opis:
Wastewater treatment in semi-natural systems, such as a hydroponic lagoon operating as the third stage of treatment, is becoming more and more popular because of the efficiency of organic matter and nutrient removal. The article presents an analysis of the efficiency of pollutant removal at the mechanical-biological wastewater treatment plant in Gronów with a capacity of Qd = 1125m3/day and a load of 9375 PE. The wastewater treatment plant operates on the basis of activated sludge and biomass settling technology on submerged flow beds. The treatment plant is characterized by a very high variability of wastewater inflow during the year due to periodic inflow of wastewater from tourist resorts in Łagów. The average efficiency of removing pollutants from wastewater was: BOD5 - 98.5%, COD - 92.8%, total suspended solids - 93.2%, total nitrogen - 86.1% and total phosphorus - 69.5%. The study showed that the use of a hydroponic lagoon in the technological system improved the efficiency of wastewater treatment by 1.7% for BOD5, 0.9% - COD, total suspended solids by 4.3%, 6.4% for total nitrogen and total phosphorus - 3.3%.

In this paper we present the results of direct observations of the morphology and size of phage-like particles by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as a function of their spatial distribution in the shallow highly productive Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea. In total, 26 morphologically different forms of phagelike particles were found. Different trends of distribution in terms of abundance, size and shape of virus-like particles were demonstrated. The total abundance of viruses varied from 1.91×107 ml−1 to 5.06×107 ml−1. The virus to bacteria ratio (VBR) changed from 15.6 to 49 and was negatively associated with total bacterial numbers (r = −0.60; p < 0.05). The phages of family Myoviridae were the most diverse and were dominant at all stations.

Opis:
In this study the activity of uranium isotopes 234U and 238U in Odra river water samples, collected from October 2003 to July 2004, was measured using alpha spectrometry. The uranium concentrations were different in each of the seasons analysed; the lowest values were recorded in summer. In all seasons, uranium concentrations were the highest in Bystrzyca river waters (from 27.81±0.29 Bq m−3 of 234U and 17.82±0.23 Bq m−3 of 238U in spring to 194.76±3.43 Bq m−3 of 234U and 134.88 ± 2.85 Bq m−3 of 238U in summer). The lowest concentrations were noted in the Mała Panew (from 1.33±0.02 Bq m−3 of 234U and 1.06±0.02 Bq m−3 of 238U in spring to 3.52 ± 0.05 Bq m−3 of 234U and 2.59 ± 0.04 Bq m−3 of 238U in autumn). The uranium radionuclides 234U and 238U in the water samples were not in radioactive equilibrium. The 234U/238U activity ratios were the highest in Odra water samples collected at Głogów (1.84 in autumn), and the lowest in water from the Noteć (1.03 in winter and spring). The 234U/238U activity ratio decreases along the main stream of the Odra, owing to changes in the salinity of the river’s waters. Annually, 8.19 tons of uranium (126.29 GBq of 234U and 100.80 GBq of 238U) flow into the Szczecin Lagoon with Odra river waters.

Opis:
Fresh water accumulated beneath the sea floor may flow through sediments into the sea water. This process, opposite to infiltration, is called Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD). The Southern Baltic Sea coastal zone represents an interesting object of study because its bottom deposits show seepages of fresh groundwater. The study involved Puck Bay and the adjacent coastal belt of the Kashubian Coast plateau. Research of potential outflows of fresh groundwater was done through a thermal imaging of the study area. An articulate thermal anomaly allowed predetermining the location of research points. Groundwater outflows in the seabed were confirmed by measurements of chloride content and electrical conductivity of water samples. The paper presents two new devices: a filtrometer that enables measurement of water filtration intensity during drainage, and a gradientmeter that measures the hydraulic gradient. The use of both devices allows determination of the in situ hydraulic conductivity. Results of the research have shown relationships between fresh groundwater and the sea-bottom sediments.

Opis:
In this study, we present an analysis of the hydrodynamic processes under ice cover in the largest lagoon in Europe – the Curonian Lagoon. By applying a finite element numerical modelling system (SHYFEM) and remote sensing ice cover data, the residual circulation, water fluxes through specific areas of the lagoon, saltwater intrusions, and water residence time (WRT) were investigated. The results, taken over an 11 year period, show that ice cover affects the circulation patterns in the lagoon by forming and shifting different gyre systems. Different circulation patterns are observed throughout all the meteorological seasons of the year. Since ice decreases circulation, water fluxes also decrease, especially in a cross-section in the middle of the lagoon, where the ice-cover suppressed wind-stress has a higher impact on the water movement rather than it has in the north. The presence of ice cover also decreases the salinity of the water in the northern part of the lagoon. In general, the salinity in the water column averaged over different periods is vertically uniform, however, a slight increase of salt concentration can be observed at the bottom layers in the Klaipėda Strait, where the difference of >1 PSU between bottom and top layers shows up on average 130 hours per year. The ice cover also decreases the saltwater intrusions into the lagoon by nearly 14 days per year. The increase of WRT is most prominent after long ice cover periods, away from the river inlets, especially in the southern part of the lagoon, where without the help of the wind action, water takes a longer time to renew than in the northern part.
