Opis:
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a well-known solution for medium and high voltage high power converter systems. This paper deals with energy balancing of MMCs. The analysis includes multi-converter systems. In order to provide clear view, the MMC control system is divided into hierarchical levels. Details of control and balancing methods are discussed for each level separately. Finally, experimental results, based on multi-converter test setup, are presented.

Opis:
Recently, the use of multilevel converters is on the rise for medium and high voltage applications. Multilevel Converters (MLCs) have the merit of clamping the voltages thereby preventing the need for fast switching, in addition to providing cleaner output waveform for effective switching. As wind turbines are increasing in power ratings, MLCs could be well suited in regards to this application. This paper investigates the performance of a Neutral Point Clamped three-level converter system and a two-level parallel interleaved MLC system in a DFIG variable speed wind turbine during transient. The space vector modulations, switching sequences and strategies of both MLCs were analyzed. The DFIG-based wind turbine system was subjected to a severe grid fault to test the strength of both MLC systems. Furthermore a braking resistor connected to the stator of the DFIG was used to improve the performance of both MLC system. Simulations were run using Power System Computer Aided Design and Electromagnetic Transient Including DC platform. Results obtained using both MLCs were compared based on the performance index of some of the DFIG variables. Also, the responses of the MLCs were compared to the traditional two level DFIG converter topology.

Opis:
Boost DC/DC pulse converter structure with regard to conduction power losses for Continuous Current Mode has been analyzed in the paper. Simplified model of converter which takes into account the nonlinearity of the static characteristic switches was usedfor theoretical analysis. The models of the transistor and diode whose static characteristic are modeled as in series connection ideal electronic switch, the constant voltage source and dynamic effective resistance have been used. The dynamic losses of powers occurring in the switching process of electronic switches were not captured in the work. The proposed model of the converter has the use in the case, when it works at low switching frequencies, when the losses of switching are considerably smaller than the losses of conductivity. This land of model is useful, particularly in the case of the converter supplied the low voltage, when the voltages loss on electronic switches is significant. Analysis was performed for Continuous Current Mode (CCM) with voltage step up. Results of theoretical analysis have been presented and were verified by simulation. TCAD circuit simulator was used for simulation. Simulations confirm results of theoretical analysis.

Opis:
The paper presents different solutions applicable in power converter systems for connecting power grids with energy storage systems such as superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), supercapacitor energy storage (SES) or chemical batteries. Those systems are characterized by bidirectional current flow between energy storage and power grid. Two-level converters (AC-DC and DC-AC converters) dedicated for low power energy storage compatible with 3×400 V-type power grids are proposed. High power systems are connected with 3×6 kV-type power grids via transformers that adjust voltage to the particular energy storage or directly, based on multilevel power converters (AC-DC and DC-AC) or dual active bridge (DAB) systems. Solutions ensuring power grid compatibility with several energy storage systems of the same electrical parameters as well as of different voltage-current characteristics are also proposed. Selected simulation results illustrating operation of two system topologies of 200 kW power for two-level converter and neutral point clamped (NPC) three-level converter are presented.

Opis:
The use of multicellular topology in power quality enhancement can reduce the power loss and also dv/dt of power switches, minimize the electromagnetic interference. However, the failure of flying capacitors can reduce the active filtering efficiency and affect the power quality by injecting currents with wave-form distortion (harmonics, notching, noises etc.) in power distribution grid. Therefore, this study presents a faulttolerant control strategy (FTC) allowing to keep the normal operation conditions of a multicellular converter even under failure mode. The obtained results show that the proposed FTC strategy enhances the power quality of power distribution grid when a fault in flying capacitors occurs.

Opis:
The paper presents the control system and selected results of experimental tests of the AC/DC power converter consisting of an 18pulse diode rectifier based on coupled reactors and a serial active power filter. Proportional integral controllers with decoupling components are implemented in multiple reference frames for selective line current harmonic suppression. The regulator is provided with a backtracking anti-windup mechanism of sorts in which a signal proportional to the saturated control reference is subtracted from the error signal in each reference frame. The fundamental harmonic filter based on the DFT algorithm with phase correction is used for grid synchronization and current harmonic detection. Three configurations of the 15 kVA converter were tested experimentally and then compared: the 18-pulse diode rectifier with and without an additional grid reactor, and the rectifier integrated with an active power filter. The applied control method of active filter significantly reduces harmonic distortion and unbalance of the grid current, which is particularly advantageous under non-ideal supply voltage and low loads conditions.

Opis:
This paper deals with performance of the 50 kVA three-phase converter built with switches based on SiC MOSFET and anti-parallel Schottky diodes. In contrast to popular IGBT converters, a negative switch current is capable of flowing through the reverse conducting transistor, which results in different distribution of power losses among the devices. Thus, equations describing the conduction power losses of the transistor and diode are improved and verified by means of circuit simulations in Saber. Moreover, a comparison of power losses calculated with the use of standard and new equations is also shown. Total power losses in three SiC MOSFET modules of a 50 kVA converter operating at 20 kHz are up to 30% lower when reverse conduction is taken into account. This shows the importance of the discussed problem and proves that much better accuracy in the estimation of power losses and junction temperatures of SiC devices may be obtained with the proposed approach.
