Opis:
The genetic structure of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst] of the Istebna race was studied in two populations from the Carpathian seed stands in the Malinka and Czarne Forestries. The recent provenance test results have shown a high quality of both populations. The results were compared with the genetic variation parameters calculated for the selected seed stand from the Bukowiec Forestry (compartment 149h), whose genetic structure in the progeny test for this species is considered a national standard. Five enzyme systems were analysed. The results show that the mean number of alleles per locus and the heterozygosity observed in the analysed populations are greater than those reported in the literature for other natural Norway spruce populations from the Carpathians. The heterozygosity level of the studied seed stands was higher than of the selective population of the Istebna spruce plus trees and the level of genetic diversity was similar to that of the Bukowiec seed stands. Thus, it can be concluded that the analysed seed stands from Czarne and Malinka, compartment 91h can be used as a supplementary seed base. However, at the individual partial population level, the Bukowiec spruce population, compartment 149h is considered to be of the highest value.

Opis:
The aim of the paper was to distinguish age groups of red deer stags in compliance with age classes (I−III) operational in game management practices in order to carry out individual selection of red deer populations living in the Warmia and Mazury regions. The parameters taken for analyses were, among others: the sum of points on the CIC scale, antler weight, length of beams and body weight. Moreover, the rate of growth of body weight and the selected features of antlers were analysed to identify age groups of stags. The analysis of the data from measurements of all stags harvested in the Olsztyn Province during three hunting seasons 1988/1989, 1989/1990 and 1990/1991 showed that the sampled group contained selective, shootable and prospective stags, i.e. non−selective stags below 10 years of age culled contrary to the selection criteria. Stags from the last two groups formed the class of strong stags, i.e. stags with antlers developed above the standard for a given age. The experimental material presented in this paper consisted of antlers collected from 1704 red deer stags including 405−546 antlers from non−selective (strong) stags.

Opis:
The study presents verification of the accuracy of the traditional hunters' method of red deer stags age determination based on the assessment of mandibular tooth development and degree of wear with the histological thin−section technique estimating age from the number of annular layers in the secondary dentine and cementum deposited in incisors (I1) or molars (M1). The performed analysis enabled construction of pictorial tables to estimate the age of the Mazurian red deer stags using the traditional hunters' method and recognition of the characteristic features of dentition in stags from a given age group, thus allowing improvement of the existing hunters' method.

The aim of this article was to determine the growth and development of the Mazurian population of red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) on the basis of morphological parameters of antlers. Data from measurements of stags harvested in the Olsztyn Province during three hunting seasons 1988/1989, 1989/1990 and 1990/1991 were taken for analyses. The sampled group contained selective, shootable and prospective stags. Stags from the last two groups formed the class of strong stags, i.e. stags with antlers developed above the standard for a given age being the basic material for this study.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine individual quality of red deer males occurring in the Dulowa Forest (S Poland). Carcass weight as well as form and weight of antlers were the main criteria. Analysed deer characterized with good quality of the inter−individual, as shown by the higher (or similar) average carcass and antlers weight compared to the individuals hunted in other regions. In addition high quality of the inter−individual demonstrated by the fact that 17,4% deer had antlers with a medal. The maximum average weight of antlers (7.29 kg) was observed for thirteen−years−old animals, while the culmination of carcass weight (159.8 kg) occurred for twelve−years−old individuals. Weight of the antlers was significantly correlated with age (r=0.88), carcass weight (r=0.84) and form of antlers (r=0.79).

Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate arguments for hunting and its impact on forest management and conservation in national parks as well as areas directly adjacent to them. The issue was examined using the example of the Magura National Park (MNP) for which data on the number of deer and predatory mammals included in the statistical yearbooks for 2013–2014 were available. The quality and size of the food sources provided by this type of forest habitat were evaluated using data obtained from the literature. We also included data on the dietary habits of wolves and lynxes as well as their impact on the number of large ungulates in our analysis. The maximum carrying capacity of forest stands in the Magura National Park was determined to be 789 deer units (dear unit = 1 red deer or 0,3 elk or 5 roe deer), whereas in fact in 2014, the abundance of ungulates reached a total of 1230 deer units. Our analysis evaluating the impact of wolf and lynx populations on ungulates in the area showed that these predators can kill up to 212 deer per year (140 individuals by wolves and 72 by lynxes). The growth in deer population, however, varies from 25,8% to 27,7%, which in the MNP amounts to 258–277 new born individuals per year, meaning that the wolf and lynx populations in the MNP are not able to prevent the number of deer from growing. The current population of ungulates (1230 deer units ) having reached a density of 6,6 deer units/km2 exceeds the capacity of the MNP and thus poses a real threat to maintaining both, the nature of the park and the adjacent stands. This article shows that the natural maintenance of balance in the predator-prey relationship is unlikely under these conditions and failure to allow for anthropogenic interference to regulate the number of ungulates in protected areas may result in an increase in the density of their population. Potential destruction of other valuable assets such as forest habitats may consequently follow.

Opis:
Measurements of 78 red deer calves were carried out taking into consideration their sex and age classes, i.e. calves harvested from 25 September to 30 November – younger age class and from 1 December to 15 January – older age class. It was demonstrated that the body weight of the average calve from the hunting area under study is about 43 kg, the length is over 155 cm and height at the withers and rump are 100 and 111.5 cm, respectively. Sex appeared to be the factor affecting the weight and size of red deer calves. It was proved that the body weight and size depend on the date of culling in the hunting season.
