Opis:
The purpose of this article is to show different approaches and trends in foreign language teaching in Polish schools over the last two decades. Emphasis will be placed on changing the skills and competencies needed to succeed to transition from the bilingual to the multilingualcitizen. European population is becoming more and more multicultural, with a growing diversity of cultures, races, values, and languages. The article also presents some examples of research with regard to attitudes and stereotypes. It is observable that this phenomenon exerts impact on the effective classroom management. Taking into account the new context of work in foreign language classrooms, the author focuses on strategies and key challenges encountered by teachers such as: differences in motivation or interests, individualization resulting from the biography of a language, cultural baggage, linguistic interference, and implementation of new technologies.

This paper is a review of key aspects of complementary teaching of English and German as a foreign language i.e. according to the DaFnE (German after English) principle that means the sequential constellation of English as the first foreign language and German as the second one (tertiary language). It should be noted that this approach has been developed since the seventies of the twentieth century. From the statistical point of view, German is the second most commonly taught foreign language in Poland, preceded by English. Therefore it would be desirable to develop the DaFnE concept also in this country. The objective of the present paper is to show the advantages of the idea and available reference books in this regard.

Intercultural meetings are present in foreign language teaching and they are currently gaining popularity. It is the result not only of globalisation but also of the increasing sensitivity and awareness of the coexistence of different cultures. The advantages of intercultural meetingshave been appreciated by teachers and tutors working with different age groups. Leaving aside their benefits, they constitute an enormous organisational challenge at the same time. The following paper aims at discussing the opportunities and potential difficulties related tointercultural challenges based on the survey conducted among Polish and German teachers organising intercultural exchanges.

The purpose of this article is to present the learning foreign languages as an activity supporting the self-improvement and the development of creative competences. The article consists of three parts. The subject of the first part is an evolution of the concept of creativity, characteristics of the  research paradigms of creativity and links between the self-improvement and the creative competences. The focus of the second part is neurobiological and intrapsychic basis for self-improvement and development of creative competences. The third part shows the benefits resulting from the activity of learning foreign languages in the context of self-improvement and development of creative competences.

The article presents an overview of the situation in language teaching and teacher education in Poland. An attempt has been made to evaluate the developments of the last 25 years in the Polish educational landscape in the field of language teaching, protection and promotion of minority and regional languages, pre- and in-service teacher education.Special attention has been given to expectations vis-à-vis the teaching profession in Poland and abroad, challenges arising in teacher training institutions, difficulties teachers encounter in their everyday functioning as well as their training needs. Controversial issues arising from inconclusive research results have also been identified. In the final part of the text ideas are provided for quantitative and qualitative research and its role in pre- and in-service teacher education.

Introduction: Contemporarily it is not enough to be able to use English solely for general purposes. Thus, foreign language teachers have to obtain a great deal of competences, among which some researchers point to the skills and knowledge from the specialist field. Research aim: The objective of the article consists in analysing if foreign language teachers are sufficiently prepared to teach English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to students of higher education institutions. Evidence-based Facts: The graduates of philology are fully unprepared to teach ESP, while graduates of applied linguistics are partially prepared to undertake such tasks. The main problem with teaching ESP lies, however, in the lack of appropriate didactic materials. Thus, foreign language teachers are left with no other choice than to create their own materials, apply creative teaching methods (e.g. presentations prepared by the students), or to search for the materials loosely connected with a given discipline. Summary: The practical solutions to the problem depicted in the article are suggested, and they are as follows: incorporation of “specialist foreign language methodology” into academic curricula, organisation of courses from a specific field for foreign language teachers, researching the scale of the problem, mutual exchange of experience and materials between the teachers, improvement of the hitherto created coursebooks and materials with account taken of the communicative approach towards language learning, creation of specialist coursebooks.
Wprowadzenie: We współczesnych realiach edukacyjnych, społecznych, zawodowych znajomość tzw. ogólnej angielszczyzny jest niewystarczająca do skutecznej komunikacji. Lektorzy języka angielskiego muszą zatem nabyć kompetencje pozwalające na kształcenie językowe w takim kierunku, wśród tych kompetencji jest m.in. nauczanie języków specjalistycznych. Cel badań: Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przeanalizowanie stopnia przygotowania nauczycieli języków obcych do nauczania języka angielskiego specjalistycznego w instytucjach edukacyjnych na poziomie akademickim. Metoda badań: W badaniu wykorzystano metodę analizy dokumentów. Wyniki: Absolwenci filologii nie są wystarczająco przygotowani do nauczania języka angielskiego specjalistycznego, podczas gdy absolwenci lingwistyki stosowanej są w nieco wyższym stopniu przygotowani do podejmowania takich zadań. Główny problem w nauczaniu języka angielskiego specjalistycznego dotyczy braku odpowiednich materiałów dydaktycznych. W rezultacie nauczyciele języka angielskiego muszą opracowywać własne materiały, wdrażać kreatywne metody nauczania albo korzystać z materiałów luźno powiązanych z daną dyscypliną. Wnioski: Przedstawiono praktyczne rozwiązania problemu zarysowanego w artykule, takie jak: włączenie modułu „specjalistycznej metodyki języka obcego” w program ścieżki nauczycielskiej, organizowanie kursów z konkretnych dziedzin dla nauczycieli języka obcego, zbadanie skali problemu, wzajemna wymiana doświadczeń i materiałów pomiędzy nauczycielami, udoskonalenie  dotychczas stworzonych podręczników i materiałów z uwzględnieniem podejścia komunikacyjnego, stworzenie podręczników specjalistycznych.

The main purpose of the article is to determine whether multimedia technologies present sufficiently high level to enable them to effectively support teaching of foreign languages and the level of their use in this goal. That is why the comparative analysis of the multimedia applications from this area was made and also was done the poll analysis viewing user reviews on their usefulness, effectiveness and efficiency.

It is a fact that language education ought to include the teaching of culture and developing of cultural sensitivity. Intercultural competence is in our contemporary world the expected outcome in language learning and teaching. The intercultural learning paradigm is directed toward educating learners to communicate successfully with speakers from other cultures. Learners are to learn to understand those cultures, to develop empathy for the Other, and to understand others and their point of view. Intercultural learning thus requires learners to not only acquire knowledge about everyday living in other countries but also to explore their culture. Exploring culture must involve not only what is being stored in a cultural memory system of a community. It must also involve the reflection on the reasons why people store certain items or events and the reflection on their relevance for cotemporary individuals and communities. Dealing with the cultural memory could take the places of memory (Pierre Nora) as a starting point. Unfortunately, the textbooks rarely contain any information about them. The didactisation of that content in many cases leaves much to be desired. The aim of this paper is to discuss how to involve learners personally and actively in the process of reflection on the places of memory.

This paper attempts to contribute to the discussion on the use of biographical narratives in investigating FL teacher careers and bring to light their potential in teacher education, especially in the process of developing teacher identity and reflexivity. Biographical narratives provide indepth insights into individual professional careers which are viewed holistically, in the context the narrator’s life. Focused on the subjective dimensions of professional careers, narratives involve identification and interpretation of key events and persons in particular life stories, which stimulate the narrator’s reflexivity and enable them to find connections between episodes and make them meaningful.

The rich offer of language schools in Lublin advertises a wide spectrum of teaching methods with the aim of attracting new clients and enticing potential students. This abundance begs the question of how effective the methods employed by those schools really are in the process of foreign language teaching.
