Opis:
The present study investigates the synthesis and characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3 O4 -NPs) for their antibacterial potential against Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella pneumonia by modified disc diffusion and broth agar dilution methods. DLS and XRD results revealed the average size of synthesized Fe3 O4 -NPs as 24 nm while XPS measurement exhibited the spin-orbit peak of Fe 2p3/2 binding energy at 511 eV. Fe3 O4 -NPs inhibited the growth of K. pneumoniae and B. cereus in both liquid and soild agar media, and displayed 26 mm and 22 mm zone of inhibitions, respectively. MIC of Fe3 O4 -NPs was found to be 5 μg/mL against these strains. However, MBC for these strains was observed at 40 μg/mL concentration of Fe3 O4 -NPs for exhibiting 40–50% loss in viable bacterial cells and 80 μg/mL concentration of Fe3 O4 -NPs acted as bactericidal for causing 90–99% loss in viability. Hence, these nanoparticles can be explored for their additional antimicrobial and biomedical applications.

Opis:
Magnetite nanoparticles have become a promising material for scientific research. Among numerous technologies of their synthesis, co-precipitation seems to be the most convenient, less time-consuming and cheap method which produces fine and pure iron oxide particles applicable to environmental issues. The aim of the work was to investigate how the co-precipitation synthesis parameters, such as temperature and base volume, influence the magnetite nanoparticles ability to separate heavy metal ions. The synthesis were conducted at nine combinations of different ammonia volumes - 8 cm3, 10 cm3, 15 cm3 and temperatures - 30°C, 60°C, 90°C for each ammonia volume. Iron oxides synthesized at each combination were examined as an adsorbent of seven heavy metals: Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Cd(II). The representative sample of magnetite was characterized using XRD, SEM and BET methods. It was observed that more effective sorbent for majority of ions was produced at 30°C using 10 cm3 of ammonia. The characterization of the sample produced at these reaction conditions indicate that pure magnetite with an average crystallite size of 23.2 nm was obtained (XRD), the nanosized crystallites in the sample were agglomerated (SEM) and the specific surface area of the aggregates was estimated to be 55.64 m2·g-1 (BET). The general conclusion of the work is the evidence that magnetite nanoparticles have the ability to adsorb heavy metal ions from the aqueous solutions. The effectiveness of the process depends on many factors such as kind of heavy metal ion or the synthesis parameters of the sorbent.
Dodatkowa charakterystyka powstałego w tych warunkach sorbentu wykazała, iż stanowił on czysty magnetyt o średniej wielkości ziarna 23,2 nm (XRD).

This paper presents the results of investigations into the use of 56 nm nano iron(III) oxide as a combustion rate modifier in a solid heterogeneous rocket propellant (SHRP). A series of solid heterogeneous rocket propellants based on HTPB and ammonium perchlorate with different nano iron(III) oxide contents in the propellant composition were prepared and investigated. The ballistic parameters of the examined propellants were determined by combustion in a laboratory rocket motor (LRM). The ballistic properties were evaluated in the pressure range 5-10 MPa. It was found that the linear burning rate at 7 MPa was increased by 15% for 1% nano iron(III) oxide content in comparison to 0.2% content. Determination of the sensitivity to friction and impact, the calorific value, hardness and decomposition temperature of the derived propellants were also investigated.

Opis:
As a result of the rapid development of nanotechnology and increasing application of nanoproducts in many areas of everyday life, there is a growing risk of production of nanowastes potentially dangerous for the environment. This makes it necessary to investigate the accumulation and toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) at different trophic levels. In the studies neutron activation was applied for the investigation of iron (II,III) oxide nanoparticle (Fe3O4-NPs) accumulation by Lepidium sativum and Pisum sativum L. Plants were cultivated on growth medium contaminated with different concentrations (0.01-10 mmolźL-1) of Fe3O4-NPs. For the identification of the presence of Fe3O4-NPs in plant tissues gamma spectrometry following iron oxide (II,III) nanoparticles irradiation was applied. Both plant species were found to accumulate iron (II,III) oxide nanoparticles. The highest content of NPs was found in plant roots, reaching 40 g/kg for Pisum sativum L. More than 90% of accumulated NPs were found in roots. Accumulation of Fe3O4-NPs was found to depend on the concentration of nanostructures in the growth medium. The transfer factor for Lepidium sativum roots and shoots and Pisum sativum L. shoots decreased with increasing NP concentration in the medium; for Pisum sativum L. roots the tendency was reversed. Neutron activation of nanoparticles was shown to be a powerful tool for tracing the environmental fate of NPs and their uptake and accumulation in organisms.

Contribution of clay mineral phase (<2 um) and organic matter to the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of two clayey soils (gleyic black earths from Gniew) was investigated. The XRD analysis showed dominance of illite and mixed laver illite/smectite as well as the presence of smectite, chlorite and trace of kaolinite in the clay fraction of studied soils. CEC of the soils ranged between 22.08-32.64 cmol(+)/kg. After removal of organic matter with 30% H2O2, CEC the above values decreased significantly. However, the CEC of organic and inorganic components is not an additive. This may be explained by the formation of organo-mineral complexes, which might lower the CEC of the soil as a whole.

Twelve samples, collected from four pedons of cultivated soils (black earths) were analyzed by sequential extraction to characterize the role of free iron oxides in the association of lead and cadmium. Amounts of lead and cadmium retained varied from 11 to 89.3% of the total Pb and from 4.8 to 48.7% of the total Cd. Metals associated with amorphous Fe oxides are at least ten times higher than with crystalline Fe forms. Under the existing soil conditions (high pH and CaCO3 content) free iron oxides are components of great importance in the Pb and Cd binding process. However, the results may indicate a stronger association of Pb than Cd with iron oxides in the studied black earths.

This paper presents the study about defects found in industrial high silicon ductile iron. The microstructures were analysed using an optical microscope. Afterwards, a scanning electron microscope was used to analyse the chemical composition. The study also examined the origin of oxygen and what is the amount of oxygen in the cast iron. The amount of active oxygen was measured at two production processes. Firstly, at the end of melting process, and secondly, after the nodularization treatment. The research was carried out with different proportions of the raw materials. The focus was on determining the mechanism of the formation of slag defects to eliminate them in order to obtain ductile iron with increased silicon content of the highest possible quality. The research presented in this publication is a part of an implementation doctorate carried out in the METALPOL Foundry in Węgierska Górka (Poland). The presented research concerns the elaboration of initial parameters of liquid metal intended for processing into high-silicon ductile cast iron SiMo1000 type with aluminum and chromium additives.

The IOCG Sin Quyen deposit is located in the Red River shear zone of North Vietnam. The ore bodies are known as hydrothermal veins and are hosted in Proterozoic metapelite. A block modelling approach was used to build a 3D model of the ore bodies. An analysis was carried out on Surfer 11 computer software using the archival data recorded from several dozen boreholes distributed within the study area, as well as data obtained from the mineral and chemical analysis of 50 samples collected recently in the deposit. The ore bodies generally trend in a NW-SE direction with an average azimuth of 107° and dip of around 70°.The Cu content in the ore bodies is inhomogeneous. In the bed extension direction, the exponential correlation of Cu concentration in ore bodies is recognized within 2,500 m, while in the direction perpendicular to the bed strike, the exponential dependence is observed on 500 m of distance. The high-grade mineralisation of copper within the ore bodies is often at the altitude interval from ∼100 m to ∼150 m above sea level (asl). These bodies are also rich in uranium and gold bearing minerals. The total resources of Cu, U and Ag were estimated and amount to 361,000; 12.7 and 11.87 tonnes respectively. The model indicates the downward extension of some ore bodies to below 300 m beneath the ground surface.

Synthesized dihydroxylammonium 5,5’-bistetrazole-1,1’-diolate (TKX-50) owes its outstanding application prospects in the field of insensitive solid propellants not only to its high energetic performance but also to its low mechanical sensitivity. Based on the excellent catalytic activity of bimetallic iron oxides for the thermal decomposition of TKX-50, the catalytic mechanism of bimetallic iron oxides (NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4 and CoFe2O4) for TKX-50 pyrolysis has been explored. For this study, the decomposition process of TKX-50, before and after mixing with the bimetallic iron oxides NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 was monitored by in-situ FTIR and gas-phase MS-FTIR instruments. Of the different catalysts, ZnFe2O4 gave the best result for reducing the initial decomposition temperature of TKX-50. Additionally, the activation energy of functional group cleavage of TKX-50, before and after mixing with ZnFe2O4, was also calculated for mechanism analysis from the results of the in-situ FTIR measurements. The results showed that the condensate and the gas-phase decomposition products of TKX-50 remained unchanged after mixing with different catalysts, while the activation energy of tetrazole ring cleavage was significantly reduced. The results of this study will be helpful for the rational design of insensitive solid propellant formulations containing TKX-50, and for understanding the pyrolysis mechanisms of TKX-50 before and after mixing with the efficient catalyst ZnFe2O4.

Opis:
Most iron reserves are low in grade with quartz as the main gangue mineral, and anionic reverse flotation has become the most crucial separation method in the processing plants of iron ore. Thus, a flotation feed sample that is a mixture of low-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separators concentrates was acquired from a processing plant. The sample characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), laser particle size analyzer, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) confirmed that the sample consists of iron oxide as a valuable mineral and quartz as a gangue mineral with adequate liberation degree. In the anionic reverse flotation, the interaction of the flotation reagents with the constituents of the feed makes the flotation a complex system. Thus, the selection and optimization of regent dosages were performed using a uniform experimental design to estimate the optimum separation efficiency. The optimum reagent system was 1.6 kg/Mg starch depressant, 1.0 kg/Mg calcium oxide (lime) activator, and 0.8 kg/Mg TD-II anionic collector. At the optimum, 68.90% iron grade with 92.62% recovery was produced.

To explore the influence of reagents addition sequence of the pH regulator and the starch depressant on the anionic reverse flotation of iron oxide, flotation conditional experiments were performed on mixed low-intensity and high-gradient magnetic concentrates which is the flotation feed acquired from the iron processing plant. Besides, quartz crystal micro-balance with dissipative (QCM-D) was conducted to detect the adsorption phenomena of the flotation reagent on iron oxide sensors at different addition orders. The outcomes showed that the flotation performance using the pH regulator prior to the depressant was the best. For example, at 1.6 kg/Mg starch dosage, the recovery and separation efficiencies were improved by 18.3% and 21.2%, respectively, with keeping the concentrate Fe grade as high as 69.5%. Also, QCM-D frequency shifted by -41 Hz from 17 Hz to -24 Hz with increased dissipation from -2.6 x 10-6 to 8.2 x 10-6, indicating an increase in the mass of slightly-rigid starch adsorption layer on the surface of iron oxide under a strong alkaline condition with adsorption density of about 0.46 mg/cm2. On the other hand, under weak alkaline conditions, starch was adsorbed, and then the starch was desorbed upon the addition of the strong alkaline solution. Whereas, adding the pH modifier to create a strong alkaline condition enhanced the starch adsorption significantly with coordination and hydrogen bonds, and prevented the following adsorption of the anionic collector for more efficient reverse flotation of iron oxide minerals.

Adsorption of copper, cadmium and zinc on manganese and iron oxide coated zeolite from aqueous solution was investigated in a batch mode. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the initial concentration of metals, initial pH, contact time and temperature on the adsorption of ions. According to the results, adsorption of ions on manganese and iron oxide coated zeolite increased with the enhancement of initial Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ concentrations and contact time and also with increase of temperature. The results showed that at the beginning, the adsorption rate of Cu2+ and Cd2+ was more than 90 %. This rate continued to be slower for Zn2+ in both zeolites. Furthermore, the amount of Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ adsorption on the manganese oxide coated zeolite (qe) was equal to 14 mg/g, 9 mg/g and 16 mg/g and on the iron oxide coated zeolite it was 11 mg/g, 7 mg/g and 13mg/g, respectively. It was shown that at the concentrations below 100 mg/dm3 adsorption was rapid and almost all heavy metals were adsorbed. As a result, the significant factor affecting qe is the proportion of weight to liquid and pH in the solutions. Finally, the results showed that the adsorption of Zn2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ onto the manganese oxide coated zeolite followed both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models.
